“In the banquet hall of Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi, Swami Swatmanandaji was invited by the Ruchika Club (A wing) today on 24th June. The new committee was taking over today and it was the first meeting under them. We thank the founder members Smt. Asha Jhunjhunwala, Smt. Sarita shroff and the committee of Ruchika Club (A Wing) for the opportunity. The topic chosen was " Spirituality in Practice". Swamiji addressed the approx 90 ladies present there in Hindi and made it very relatable. He made the talk interactive and very engaging. There was lots to implement and carry over in our lives when Swamiji took a verse from the Bhagavad Geeta and elaborated upon it. Satvik food, sweetness in speech, detachment in relationships, dexterity in action, equanimity in acceptance of karma phala, purity and clarity in thought and dissolution of the ahankara was explained so beautifully , interspersed with numerous examples and lot of humour to make the subject clear to everyone present. The talk was extremely inspiring and very well received.Everyone was invited to join the devi groups as Swamiji spoke about them. From the Chinmaya Sagar Zonal committee, the President Smt. Reena Rajpal, Vice President Smt. Shruti Somani and Secretary Smt. Sujata Murali were also introduced to the members and Reenaji thanked them for giving a stall to Chinmaya Mission in their NGO category and extending support to our Mission, in the Ruchika bazaar that they host ( this year the dates are 1st, 2nd August). The program ended with distribution of prasad pustikas to the members.” •  Report by Smt. A good part of Chapter 1 in the Bhagavad Geeta is Arjun making excuses for why he doesn't want to engage in battle with his ne'er-do-well cousins. He makes excuse after excuse for why he can't do what he knows he has to do. Will it really do any good? They are my family- I can't stand up to them! It will be bad for my karma if I do something! Sound familiar? In this podcast, we break down all the excuses we make to not do our duty. We discuss how we can stop making excuses and just do the right thing. Situation. Problem. Crisis. When we do not face the situations, they turn into problems, which, when ignored, turn into crisis. Exercises or study or meditation or work etc when done regularly are only situations. But when we ignore them, they become problems or crisis. Bhagavad Geeta tells us to face the challenges of life boldly. It never encourages escapism or avoidance. However unpleasant it may seem, there is no choice in facing the situations of life. Choice is only in how to face them. We can look at them as opportunities for growth or be pessimistic or indifferent or unenthusiastic about them or crib and complain about them. Let us live life with more interest and involvement. Think about what problems or crisis you are going through, which were just a situation before. Also Think, what are mere situations now, which can become problems or crisis later? Starting meeting these situations. Now. We either daydream positive scenarios or replay negative reactions of our actions in our head. Just like Arjuna, we too, glorify our weaknesses or just want to escape. We too, lose clarity when faced with our attachments. However, when we accept we don’t know and can no longer see clearly, our sorrow transforms. With surrender, we can detach and move forward.

Most of our thoughts centre around “me” and we become egocentric individuals as we think we are separate from everyone else. More importantly, we start thinking we are separate from the Lord, the light or the Supreme truth. But when we bow down and sincerely surrender ourselves, no thought of “me” or “I am” exists. Our mind is completely tuned into the Supreme, and we feel connected. The Geeta Dhyanam are such invocation mantras that help us in establishing that connection and staying there.

When fear, other emotions, and attachments creep into the mind, it automatically becomes weak. A weak mind looks for reasons to blame our sorrows, difficulties, and problems on. A weak mind loses clarity on why we are acting and what it is we want. A weak mind uses wise quotes or scriptures to justify its weakness. This is why we can relate to Arjuna. And when emotions get the better of us this way, it is sometimes better to watch the movement of the mind as a wave and simply let it pass.

Be it at the level of body, mind or intellect, anything that gives us joy attracts us. Thus, what attracts us the most is that which would give us the greatest joy. But instant gratification of our desires empowers us to go after temporary pleasures. And when faced with a situation that directly conflicts with our attachments, we become weak. Our resolve breaks and we can become complacent. This behaviour is what we are trying to be more aware of so that we can grow to be the very best we can be.

Chapter 1 lays the foundation so that when Krishna speaks, we can understand. But most front covers of published Geetas (i.e., Arjuna’s chariot) depict a great philosophy. In short, the chariot is our body, 5 horses our senses, reins our mind and charioteer our intellect. Plus, Arjuna represents the Jiva (us) who is Sattvic. Empowered by purity, selflessness, and other virtues, surrender it all and let Lord Krishna take the reins. Only once emptied can then we be filled with knowledge and feel His grace.

Swami Tejomayananda ji jokes, “What does it mean when a man opens the car door for his wife? Either it’s a new car or a new wife!” Attachment to objects and people changes the way we see the world and act in it for we add onto them a value. So during decision-making, we get swayed towards our attachments and away from Dharma, what we know is right. By repeatedly choosing Adharma, Dhritarashtra and Duryodhana were so weakened that they couldn’t accept grace into their lives. Shouldn’t we choose to do better?

Our minds are blinded by attachments, but our intellect can see. We are constantly making decisions that shape who we become and the destiny we face. Do we listen to the mind or intellect? Though Arjuna was faced with the epic Mahabharata war, this is the war that is eternally waged in our hearts. Our war is but the battles we face minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day and week-to-week. This new series is a discourse on the Bhagavad Geeta, rooted in the commentary of Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda.

There is a verse in the Bhagavad Geeta that reads “na me bhakta pranashyati”. Shri Krishna promises that each one of us will be liberated, taken care of by him, and supported. So today, let us be grateful for promises. Whether it is His promise or any other promise you made, let us be thankful for it and appreciate how these promises have helped build our lives.

The two panelists on this webinar are Swami Swatmananda from the Chinmaya Mission and Dr. Sunita Shanker Svami Swatmanda has been serving in Chinmaya Mission Mumbai since 2000. Chinmaya Mission is an organization that follows the Vedic teacher student tradition and makes available the ageless wisdom of Advaita Vedanta, the knowledge of universal oneness, providing the tools to realize the wisdom of one's life. He expounds the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta through talks on the Bhagavad Geeta, Upanishads and other texts of Vedanta & bhakti through camps, meditation retreats, interactive sessions and discussions for youth & adults. He has also addressed several multinational organizations such as Toyota, PwC, Tata Motors, Reliance and many more. He holds weekly discussion groups on the Bhagavad Gita for some of the top industrialists of India. Dr. Sunita Shanker is a Phd in Clinical Psychology with over 20+ years of experience working with people who have mental health problems. She has worked in the psychiatry deparments of organizations such as the Indian Navy, National University Hospital in Singapore and Somaiya Hospital in Mumbai. Some of the topics that we discuss in the webinar are: - why is standard of living higher than ever before but mental health problems still rising? - what are symptoms that one should look out for to identify certain mental health issues? - why spirituality is important for the youth (and not a post retirement plan) - how to deal with the constant ups and downs in life? I honestly thoroughly enjoyed this webinar and learned so much as a co-host so I really hope you are able to gain value from this! - Devesh Tilokani (Podcast Host and Founder at Progressholic) If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to shoot us a DM on Instagram (@progressholics) or email us (info@progressholic.com)
