For the Love of Yoga with Nish the Fish

On the fifth day of the waxing fortnight of the month Vaiśakh, we celebrated one of India's greatest and most celebrated philosopher-mystics of all time, Adi Shankaracharya. While many feel that Advaita Vedanta is juxtaposed to Tantrik philosophy since it features a "Brahman only without Shakti" model. However, there are at least 4 things that make Shankara an out and out Shakta Tantrika in my book. In this talk, as an offering at the lotus feet of the great master, we go over these four "Tantrik" elements in Sri Sri Shankaracharya's life and teaching!May this be an offering to Sri Shankara and the lineage. May it be an offering to Mā Ganga (today is Ganga Saptami) and the unceasing stream of wisdom that has flowed in India sine time immemorial!Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show

Devi Annapurna is the goddess of food and nourishment. She is called the mother of the three worlds and gives to everyone what only a mother gives, naturally and freely – food. She bears no weapons in her hands, but rather carries a cooking pot and a spoon. As giver of food she is the giver of life. Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya composed the Annapurna Stotram of 12 verses which help us revere and revel in what we are blessed with. Many people are becoming increasingly familiar with Advaita Vedanta, the classical Non-Duality of Adi Shankaracharya but fewer people are aware that there are indeed other versions of Non-Dual spiritual philosophy and practice. In this video, we do a cursory introduction to my favorite form of Non-Duality: The Tantrik Non-Duality of Abhinava Gupta which is sometimes called The Kaula Trika, the Pratybhijñā Vada (Recognition School) or more commonly, just "Kashmir Shaivism". We start the  lesson by exploring the idea of "Bhairava", in his fierce (ugra) form and also in his more, esoteric formless aspect as pure Non-Dual Consciousness which is the interpretation Abhinava Gupta often has in mind when he uses the term "Bhairava". Then, we explore some of the drawbacks and delusions of Neo-Advaita/Direct Path Teachings and well as some of the difficulties of Bhakti with a reading from the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna which teaches us how to realize the Formless God!Finally, we take up Verses 10 and 11 from the Non-Dual Tantrik introductory manual, Paramārthasāra of Abhinava Gupta to offer a teaching on the nature of the Highest Reality, the Supreme Principle in Non-Dual Shaivism which you can call Paramaśiva of which I tend to call "Kālī." And here are the Bhairava lectures we mention early in the talk:Secret Mantras for Bhairava and His 8 FormsThe Secret Teaching of BhairavaHow To Pray To Kāla BhairavaHere's the German compound word we mentioned in the lecture: Donau-dampfschiff-fahrts-gesellschaftLectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMAnd if you feel moved to donate to support me and this work, you're welcome to here:https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/jaimakaliSupport the show

The work is held in such high esteem in the tradition of Advaita that it is quoted not only by every important Advaita writer but also by the critics of the Advaita philosophy. The author himself says that the work ‘purports to set forth the epitome of the essence of the entire Vedanta'. ► To support the Vedanta Society of New York: http://www.vedantany.org/donate

Streamed live on Jul 4, 2020 #Yogananda #Guru #YogaMeditation The satsanga includes an opening prayer, a chant, a period of silent meditation, and an inspirational talk by Swami Smaranananda Giri on “The Need for a True Guru in One's Life.” It concludes with praying for all, the practice of Paramahansa Yogananda's healing technique, and a closing prayer. * * * A common man has a limited understanding of the need for a true guru on the spiritual path, and indeed for life itself. Swami Smaranananda shares insights into this topic during the talk. - The guru is the speaking voice of silent God. Also, the guru is the awakened God, awakening the sleeping God in the disciple. The guru creates equality with himself in the disciple. Hence the need for a true Guru in our lives. - A true guru who attained God-consciousness attunes himself with Bhagavan Krishna or Patanjali or Chaitanya or Christ and absorbs the real meaning of their teachings and guides us accordingly. - Even avatars and great ones like Lord Ram, Bhagavan Krishna, Adi Shankaracharya, and Saint Kabir had gurus. That is the spiritual law. - Swamiji also explains, through examples, that a devotee need not necessarily be in the physical presence of a guru to receive guidance - one may do so through devotional and mental attunement. * * * In his “how-to-live” teachings, Paramahansa Yogananda has given to people of all cultures, races, and creeds the means to free themselves from physical, mental, and spiritual inharmonies — to create for themselves a life of enduring happiness and all-round success. Or fortunately, depending on how you use your mind. Adi Shankaracharya gives us 11 verses on the physical body, only two verses on the pranic field, and one of them says we already know this well. And then he gives us 16 verses on the mind. Why so many about the mind? Because your mind is complicated, isn't it? You need help with it, yes?  Watch Gurudevi's full discourse "Body Mind Continuum" here

I have attempted a chant of six sacred Sanskrit verses termed the Nirvana Shatakam or the Atma Shatakam, composed by ancient Indian saint and Guru Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. The verses describe the profound nature of the Supreme Blissful Consciousness or 'Shiv' that is, in fact, identical with the individual Soul or 'Jiva'. A beautiful poetic exposition of the Vedantic philosophy of Advait (Non Dualism), the verses describe Shiv as that unchanging Consciousness that is complete in itself, beyond the body, mind, emotions, attachments, desires, social relationships, Nature, religion, sin, virtue, death and even salvation. And all individual souls are its reflection and therefore also indestructible and sacred. The inner realisation of this essential Unity is true spiritual Liberation.

He is Vice President of the All India Trinamool Congress, a former member of Parliament, former Press Secretary to the President of India, and as a career diplomat, former Ambassador to Bhutan and Indian High Commissioner, Cyprus. But above all, in my book, he is an author of substance. A historian, he has authored over a dozen books that are treatises in literature, philosophy, socio-political thought and commentary. An early book of his was The Great Indian Middle Class, a book that influenced my thinking substantially. Two of his recent books are candidates for any thinking person's bookshelf—one about the great Indian sage, Adi Shankaracharya and the other, The Great Hindu Civilisation: Achievement, Neglect, Bias and the Way Forward. I say thinking person's bookshelf because the books enable anyone interested in exploring the Hindu philosophical premise or their Hindu identity and do it without submitting to gonzo politics and mindless jingoism. His novel—When Loss is Gain—is a deeply introspective tale of a man coming to grips with a surprising turn in his life.Writing fiction liberates the writer and it provides a window to the writer's soul. The prose of fiction tends to yank off any protective veil and lets you look at a writer's more romantic comportment. So I was very happy to be told that he was going to be my next guest on my podcast. In traditional Advaita Vedanta circles, Adi Shankaracharya is revered and worshipped for unlocking the profound truth of Vedanta. Through the worshipful stotram (Totakashtakam) of his disciple, Totakacharya, we appreciate his glory and seek refuge in the guru of gurus. Seeking refuge in the guru is seeking refuge in the knowledge that frees us. The full stotram of Totakashtakam sung beautifully by Swami Atmatrptananda ji can be heard here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rq1HNanVwc For an episode on Surrender - https://anchor.fm/the-river-of-wisdom/episodes/32-Surrender---1-e3g2dp/a-abt7hb For the podcast transcript - https://discoveratma.com/category/podcast/ Our May 2022 newsletter - https://mailchi.mp/c5afb9ae5abb/aarsha-vidya-bharati-may2022?e=0e8b0c9cd4 Our monthly newsletter will bring to you more happiness, more wisdom and more freedom.
