We all make decisions involving risk. Decisions like trying out for your school's chess team, speaking up when you don't agree with your boss, or going down a double-black-diamond run at the end of a long day of skiing. So how do we determine which risks are worth taking and which ones are too … risky? In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at gender differences around confidence and uncertainty, and how we can all better calibrate our bravado.Surfing waves as tall as apartment buildings takes a lot of strength and skill and preparation. It also involves risk—mistakes can lead to broken bones, concussions, or worse. But as Bianca Valenti explains, those risks can be managed, and there are big rewards in those big waves.Bianca Valenti is a world-champion surfer, speaker, activist, and entrepreneur. Watch her award-winning ride for the Mavericks Awards.Next, Katy speaks with Katherine Coffman about research that explores how gender stereotypes shape beliefs about taking risks. You can read more in the working paper she co-authored, called "A (Dynamic) Investigation of Stereotypes, Belief-Updating, and Behavior."Katherine Coffman is the Piramal Associate Professor of Business Administration in the Negotiations, Organizations & Markets unit at the Harvard Business School.Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. Two Time Big Wave World Champion Paige Alms was born in Canada. At age 7, a life-altering trip completely changed the course for her family and set Paige on the path toward shaping modern big wave surfing. Paige is a co-founder of the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing (CEWS), established in 2016, with her peers in professional big wave surfing: Keala Kennelly, Andrea Moller, and Bianca Valenti. Their vision and persistence in challenging the World Surf League’s history of pay inequity played a key role in demanding the WSL to implement pay parity and bolster women’s representation at big wave events. Paige is an all-around waterperson, who excels when the ocean is 1 foot or 50 --- whether through wing-dinging on unbroken swell lines, or becoming the first woman to get barrelled at Pe'ahi. .....Listen with Lauren L. Full episode info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com First podcast of my California road trip! And what a lovely way to kick things off. I first heard of Sachi Cunningham when a listener tipped me off, and I immediately got in touch to ask her if she’d be up for coming on the show while I was in San Francisco. Sachi is a surf photographer, filmmaker, journalist, mother, cancer survivor and all round force of nature who has spent the last few years working on a project called She Change. It's a documentary which follows Keala Kennelly, Paige Alms, Bianca Valenti and Andrea Moller on their quest to be admitted in the Maverick’s big wave event, and which uses that topic to explore the wider story of the quest for gender parity in big wave surfing. It’s a story that has garnered significant mainstream coverage, and She Change tackles themes I've covered on previous podcasts, one of which is how men react when women ‘encroach’ on what is traditionally very masculine territory. Sachi is a skilled storyteller, and she tackles this nuanced and emotional topic with the honest and integrity that is a feature of all her work, whether it’s her pioneering water photographer at waves like Ocean Beach and Mavericks, or in the way she fearlessly and openly documented her recent cancer experience. Overall, this is yet another poignant, at times hilarious and completely honest conversation with an inspirational guest, who is driven to tell stories about people who’s passion has driven them into new and uncharted territory. Much like Sachi herself. Thanks as usual to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my new editor Fina Charleson.
Knicks eighteen straight losses and game tonight against Hawks but Nets go into break 30-29.Russ and Harden congrats on streaks but MJ cares more about championships.Landon Donovan I want to love the MLS. I really do.
Over the past year, professional surfing has undergone a remarkable and very unexpected evolution. Beginning in 2019, the World Surf League is offering equal prize money to men and women at all of its events, making it one of very few global sports leagues to do so. A key part of this story was the push to get women included in the big-wave contest at Mavericks, on the Northern California coast, an effort headlined by 31-year-old Bianca Valenti. In a way, her whole career had been leading up to this mission. Outside executive editor Michael Roberts reports on Valenti’s journey from a teenager frustrated by the bro culture that ruled surfing to the front lines of a movement that could have a lasting impact on all of sports.
San Francisco big-wave surfer Bianca Valenti has been leading the fight for pay equity in professional surfing. Earlier this year, she and her organization pushed the World Surf League to pay male and female surf contest winners the same, which is a huge deal. Now she’s gearing up for the Mavericks Surf Contest and what promises to be an epic winter surfing season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Bianca Valenti fell in love with surfing in the breaks of Orange County, California, when she was seven years old. Soon after, she started competing, gained sponsorships, and won competitions. Even at a young age, Bianca noticed a discrepancy in the treatment, recognition, and reward of male versus female surfers. It was discouraging and disheartening. She left the surf scene entirely but the siren’s call of riding 30-plus foot waves drew her back in. As one of the sport’s best big wave surfers, it was crushing to discover that the premier big wave competition, Mavericks, didn’t allow female competitors. So, Bianca set her sights on confronting another towering giant — sexism in surf culture. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
