This week we discuss the film Serial!Inspired by the Cyra McFadden novel The Serial: A Year in the Life of Marin County, Serial is director Bill Persky's (TV's Kate & Allie) satirical look at the lifestyles of California's 1970's hippie culture. Viewed through the eyes of Harvey Holroyd (Martin Mull, TV's Roseanne), a man perplexed by the behavior of his wife Kate (Tuesday Weld, Pretty Poison) and their liberal-minded friends, Serial lampoons everything from feminism, free love and sexual politics to cults, motorcycle clubs and the random midlife crisis. The gifted ensemble cast includes Sally Kellerman (MASH), Christopher Lee (Dr. Terror's House of Horrors), Bill Macy (The Holiday), Peter Bonerz (TV's The Bob Newhart Show), Nina Talbot (Night Shift), Tom Smothers (Get To Know Your Rabbit), Pamela Bellwood (TV's Dynasty) and Stacey Nelkin (Halloween III: Season of The Witch).Be sure to subscribe on your favorite pod platform and our YOUTUBE channel!Visit thecultworthy.comVisit https://www.themoviewire.comVideo: https://www.youtube.com/@back2thebalcony
A legendary Emmy-award winning TV writer, director & producer who co-wrote many of the classic episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show and created the TV series That Girl starring Marlo Thomas. A former lifeguard in the Catskills mountains turned comedy writer for radio DJs at WNEW, Bill partnered up with Sam Denoff to write comedy for The Steve Allen Show, Good Morning World and many other sitcoms from the golden age of television. Persky went on to direct 100 episodes of the situation comedy Kate and Allie, as well as The Practice and Busting Loose. Bill also directed the feature film Serial.
By 1963, Bill Persky had already worked as a lifeguard at Grossinger's in the Catskill Mountains and watched the hotel's standup comics make people laugh. He'd written a show at Syracuse University that won a national collegiate award. He'd worked at an advertising agency and radio station in New York before moving to California to write for television. And then in 1963, everything changed. August 17, 1987. On the red carpet in New York City, it's the premier of a new movie: Dirty Dancing. The story is set in the sunburnt Shangri-La of New York's Catskills resort region. The movie will introduce millions to the place that some call the Jewish Alps. "Disneyland with knishes." The Sour Cream Sierras. The Borscht Belt. Ironically, Dirty Dancing arrives as the heyday of the Catskills resort is ending. But how does its culture live on? And how did its signature style of Jewish humor make the leap to Hollywood, where it would fundamentally change American comedy?Special thanks to our guests: Julie Budd, John Conway, Jeremy Dauber, Elaine Grossinger Etess, Bill Persky, Larry Strickler, and Alan Zweibel. Billed as "The World's Slowest-rising Comedian," Ronnie Schell has been making people laugh for seven decades. His story began at The Purple Onion and the hungry i in the late '50s where Schell shared stages with The Kingston Trio and Phyllis Diller. From there, the now 90-year-old seemed destined for showbiz success. His TV history starts as a contestant on "You Bet Your Life" with Groucho Marx. The big break came with "Gomer Pyle, USMC" where he played Jim Nabor's army pal Duke Slater. He shared top billing with Montreal-born Joby Baker, Billy De Wolfe and newcomer Goldie Hawn on the radio station sitcom "Good Morning World" -- a series co-created by previous brioux.tv guest Bill Persky.Schell went on to a string of Disney movies in the '70s and '80s starring some of the biggest names in comedy, including Don Knotts, Tim Conway, and Phil Silvers. That was his voice on many Hanna-Barbera animated series, including versions of The Flintstones, The Smurfs and Scooby-Doo. Almost 50 years ago, a request came in to voice a character that was a hit with Canadians -- Peter Puck. The character explained hockey rules to Americans on NBC. In real life, Schell didn't know an icing from an off side!Hear these stories and many more, including the names of a few famous headliners Schell was not a fan of, as he looks back on a half-century of entertainment history.
Bill Persky helped save Carl Reiner's life. That's how the late, great creator-executive producer of The Dick Van Dyke Show saw it anyway. As the third season approached, he desperately needed steady help churning out 30 to 33 scripts a year for his hit CBS sitcom of the 1960s. Enter Persky and writing partner Sam Denoff. The former radio men from New York had made headway as sketch writers for stars such as Steve Allen, Joey Bishop and Andy Williams, but they desperately wanted to crack the big time of sitcom writing. So, through their agent, they submitted a spec script to Reiner. The only problem was -- he hated it.Fortunately, he was kind enough to give them a second chance. That next spec script turned out to be one of the classics from the series – “That's My Boy?”—the one where Rob thinks they've brought home the wrong child from the hospital.Persky and Denoff went on to create That Girl, starring Marlo Thomas, in 1965, as well as write and produce other shows such as Good Morning World, Lotsa Luck with Dom DeLuise and The Montefuscos. Persky later concentrated on directing, helming over 100 episodes of the ‘80s comedy Kate & Allie.Persky's memoir is titled, “My Life is a Situation Comedy” and you'll want to order it and read it after listening to the very spry 89-year-old spin story-after-story from the Golden Age of television.

Bill Persky is a veteran Emmy Award winning comedy writer who started, like so many other comedy writers of his era, as a gag writer for established comedians not all of whom, as it turns out, were terribly funny people... until Bill helped them out of course. He soon moved on to writing for Variety shows for the likes of Sid Caesar, Bob Hope and Bill Cosby, then moved on to sit coms eventually co-creating the breakthrough show "That Girl" starring Marlo Thomas. One of Bill's more recent contributions to the comedy world is his book "My Life is a Situation Comedy" (http://amzn.to/1jPSMuj). You should buy it and then read it... preferably in that order. Bill's got hilarious stories and amazing insight not just on the shows he wrote for, but also many of the classic shows of his time as well today's most popular sit coms. He's an amazing guy, an inspiration to all comedy writers, and a saint for putting up with me for nearly an hour. Please enjoy this very special episode. Listen on iTunes.
