In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Kyle Eagen from Baylor College of Medicine about his work on BET Proteins and their role in chromosome folding and compartmentalization. In the early days of his research career Dr. Eagen made use of genomics and microscopy to study chromosomes, particularly polytene chromosomes in Drosophila. The correlation between the folding patterns detected by Hi-C and polytene bands highlights the similarities between the two, bridging traditional cytology with modern NGS methods. This work formed the basis of Kyle's thesis and sparked his interest in nuclear organization and chromosome 3D structure. In his independent lab Kyle then studied compartments in chromatin structure and focused on the relationship between histone modifications and the 3D structure of chromosomes. The discovery of BRD4-NUT, a fusion oncoprotein that reprograms chromosome 3D structure, is highlighted as a significant step forward in understanding chromatin structure. The conversation then shifts to the use of a tool to test hypotheses about the involvement of BRD4 in a specific process, leading to consistent results and considerations for manipulating chromosome organization for therapeutic purposes. The role of BET proteins in genome folding and the need for further research on other factors involved in 3D genome structure are discussed. References Rosencrance, C. D., Ammouri, H. This week, the Idiots open with the worst “news” article ever written. Mya Abraham, writing for Vibe, managed to write an article that contained absolutely zero information. A great clickbait headline was followed with nothing pertaining to said headline. It's amusing, in a way, that such bad “journalism” was published. Next up, in a move that would make Aaron Persky proud, a judge released Ron Jeremy from jail, into a care facility. Why? Because Ron is sick, and that's bad, so why force a horrible human being to suffer? (One: that last sentence was dripping with sarcasm. Two: If you've forgotten, Persky is the pos who let Brock Turner off with a slap on a wrist for his horrific actions. I'm avoiding certian words here on purpose, given the nature of the YouTube algorithm.) Ron Jeremy allegedly (the most important word in the legal language) assaulted over 100 women. But hey, they're all probably lying, right? I guess that's what the judge was thinking. Moving on: victim blaming is a bad thing, but sometimes it's absolutely deserved. Raynesha Cummings, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, thought it would be a great idea to ship her kids off to a private “school” without doing a single bit of research on the facility, including using her eyeballs. John Oliver did a great segment on how awful private “schools” can be, and this one should've absolutely made the list of worst of the worst. Continuing: Oh, George Santos, we hardly knew ye. Santos used campaign donations for botox and Only Fans, and was defiant to the end, claiming that even though he's a horrible human being, he's somehow justified in his actions. (Huh. Wonder why that is? It's almost like we just had a president in office who lied about everything under the sun, and was never held to task for it.) Finally, an Ohio Republican and Russia have something in common: they both hate women. Yes, Ohio legislator Rep. Bill Dean believes that wives have no rights, and are basically the property of men. Russia, then, like many Republicans and false evangelicals, believe that women are second class citizens who don't deserve to make decisions about their own healthcare. Shocking. Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to. Tune in and get your giggle on. Find Jake at @jakevevera Find nathan at nathantimmel.com

Hello, and welcome to Beauty and the Biz where we talk about the business and marketing side of plastic surgery and what to watch out for with new associates. I'm your host, Catherine Maley, author of Your Aesthetic Practice – What your patients, are saying as well as consultant to plastic surgeons, to get them more patients and more profits. Now, today's episode is called “What to Watch Out for with New Associates - with Michael Persky, MD”. When do you add an associate to your practice? Typically, it's when you have enough demand that you can't keep up so you bring someone on board who can pick up the slack. Other times, it's when you want to offer new procedures or you want to delegate certain procedures you don't care to do anymore. And then other times, it's when you are thinking about setting yourself up to have someone one else take over your practice so you can slow down or retire altogether. In this week's Beauty and the Biz Podcast, I talked about the options above with Michael Persky, MD, a cosmetic facial plastic surgeon in private practice in Encino, CA since 1985. Dr. Persky has experienced being the “new guy on the block” and joining a practice, then going out on his own, then adding an associate, then losing that associate and finding another one and then losing that one and now in search of another! It's never too early or too late to figure this out for yourself so listen in to Dr. Persky's pearls of wisdom. Visit Dr. Persky's website at: https://www.drpersky.com/ Enjoy!

Many rumors abound about how difficult it is for lawyers to get on corporate boards...too risk averse...no P&L experience...companies already have their own general counsel. What these nay-sayers overlook, however, are the skills and competencies that lawyers, particularly general counsel, bring to boards of directors. Just like sitting CEOs and CFOs are sought for board service, so are general counsel. Join Marla Persky, a former general counsel, as she discusses her pathway to board service. Marla is president and CEO of WOMN LLC and sits on several boards of directors. Somehow she managed to overcome the burden of being a lawyer and found her way to board service.
Bill Persky helped save Carl Reiner's life. That's how the late, great creator-executive producer of The Dick Van Dyke Show saw it anyway. As the third season approached, he desperately needed steady help churning out 30 to 33 scripts a year for his hit CBS sitcom of the 1960s. Enter Persky and writing partner Sam Denoff. The former radio men from New York had made headway as sketch writers for stars such as Steve Allen, Joey Bishop and Andy Williams, but they desperately wanted to crack the big time of sitcom writing. So, through their agent, they submitted a spec script to Reiner. The only problem was -- he hated it.Fortunately, he was kind enough to give them a second chance. That next spec script turned out to be one of the classics from the series – “That's My Boy?”—the one where Rob thinks they've brought home the wrong child from the hospital.Persky and Denoff went on to create That Girl, starring Marlo Thomas, in 1965, as well as write and produce other shows such as Good Morning World, Lotsa Luck with Dom DeLuise and The Montefuscos. Persky later concentrated on directing, helming over 100 episodes of the ‘80s comedy Kate & Allie.Persky's memoir is titled, “My Life is a Situation Comedy” and you'll want to order it and read it after listening to the very spry 89-year-old spin story-after-story from the Golden Age of television.
As the first person to go to college in her family, Marla Persky did not have a professional female role model. Unsure of what she wanted to do, she found an attraction to being a trial attorney, standing up in front of a jury, telling a story and becoming a character in front of other people. While studying law she realized she loved business even more and spent many years professionally learning how to influence as opposed to command and control in business. A champion for female attorneys, diversity and inclusion, Marla has personally experienced being the only woman in the room. Driven by the passion to help other female attorneys succeed Marla founded WOMN LLC, A company dedicated to helping women succeed in the business of law by increasing their knowledge of and acuity with financial drivers, client development and leadership. Throughout her professional life, marla has had the opportunity to understand and practice business principles that lead to personal and company success. Marla has been Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Boehringer Ingelheim Inc. where she oversaw a department of over 70 individuals. Stanford law professor Michele Dauber first came to prominence following the sentencing of Stanford student Brock Turner, who was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. Turner received a sentence of just six months from Judge Aaron Persky, and Dauber subsequently led a voter initiative to remove Persky from the bench. Recently, she has launched the Enough Is Enough Voter Project, which is committed to making violence against women a voting issue by actively exposing lawmakers and candidates who have been credibly accused of sexual assault, harassment, or domestic violence, and then working to defeat them at the polls. Also, residents in the 8th congressional district may have recently seen billboards with the website, TheRealDinoRossi.com, on them, and wondered what that's all about. Both the billboards and the website are the work of members of Indivisible Washington's 8th district (and are funded by the Indivisible Project—not in conjunction with any candidate or candidate's committee). We're joined by one of the creators of the content on the site, Tiffany Smith-Fleischman, to talk about educating and informing voters about the sometimes elusive political stances of Republican Dino Rossi, who's running for Congress in the 8th congressional district. In this episode of Aider & Abettor, Avi and Sajid are joined by retired Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Ron Del Pozzo, someone who they both appeared in front of during their public defense careers before the Judge’s retirement. In the first segment (2:20), they all discuss the nuances of plea bargaining in criminal cases including the relative power of judges and prosecutors during the process. The conversation dovetailed into reflections on the interplay of bail, plea bargaining and outcomes for indigent people compared to the more affluent accused of crimes. They brainstorm ways to help level the playing field and to achieve more fair dispositions for all. In the second segment (42:30), Avi, Sajid and Judge Del Pozzo trade thoughts on the trial of Brock Turner, his sentence and the effort to recall Judge Aaron Persky. Judge Del Pozzo shares about what it was like to run for Judge against Persky, his thoughts about Turner’s sentence and his view of Perksy’s reputation on the bench. They question the prudence of the recall effort and discuss the recall’s potential consequences. In the last segment (1:19:38), they each share their “things,” including new criminal justice legislation in California about drug sales priors and sex offenders, the Warriors’ relationship with San Quentin Prison and advice from Judge Del Pozzo on how to counter hate with love. The intro, outro, and transitions are by @leerosevere. P.S. Dr Susan Persky, How Virtual Reality Is Changing Medicine Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series Virtual reality has rapidly moved beyond the gaming world—and into the world of medicine. The ability to simulate experiences expands opportunities for doctors, biomedical researchers, clinicians, and patients in ways previously unattainable. Virtual reality is capable of making people feel as if they have traveled to another place, visualize things that can't exist in reality, and can be used to improve health care. Today's show discusses the cutting-edge science and technology of this emerging area of medicine with Susan Persky, director of the Immersive Virtual Environment Testing Area at the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health. Persky, a recognized expert in virtual reality's applications in biomedical research with and for patients, in medical education, and in clinical environments. She explains promising and diverse applications of virtual reality, such as in treatment for PTSD and phobia desensitization; rehabilitation for brain injury; patient assessment and training in conditions like autism; and practical training on complex procedures and difficult clinical conversations for medical students. Persky also covers NIH research into communication and decision-making in patients as they react to simulations of environments that might trigger healthy or unhealthy behaviors. Although virtual reality can seem like something out of science fiction, the possibilities are virtually limitless in its applications to medicine and health care.
