On today's Enrollment Edge, Jay has a conversation with Dr. John Downey, President of Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia. As the President of a community college, Dr. Downey has a deep interest in the evolution of higher education to meet the growing needs of today's workforce. As you will hear in the episode, there are stark realities facing all of all of us in the coming decades. Much of our conversation connects with a recent article by Emsi called the Demographic Drought – the coming sans-demic. We'll talk about the immediate labor force needs and how higher education must find a response to the widening gap between those needs and traditional degrees, in order to avoid a "Hunger Games" recruitment environment. About Our GuestDr. John A. Downey became the fifth President of Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave, Virginia, in 2009. Prior to being named president, he served as the Vice President for Instruction and Student Services and in various other roles at the College since 1992. Before arriving at Blue Ridge, Dr. Downey worked in student services offices at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, Massachusetts. Downey received his Bachelor of Arts degree from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. He completed his doctoral program in Higher Education Administration at the University of Virginia, where he was awarded the Annette Gibbs Research Publication Award. Downey served on three of the most recent Virginia Community College System (VCCS) strategic planning development committees and chaired the 2021 Strategic Initiatives Task Force. He has served as the chairperson, or as a member, of numerous community boards, including the Shenandoah Valley Partnership for Economic Development, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, the Shenandoah Valley Workforce Development Board, the Harrisonburg City Rotary Club, On The Road Collaborative, and the GenEdge Alliance Board of Trustees (formerly the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Extension Partnership).Under his leadership, BRCC has garnered recognition from around the state for its progressive workforce initiatives and partnerships. In 2010, he was recognized as the most supportive president of the year at the Enactus (formerly SIFE) National Exposition. Blue Ridge Community College has consistently been recognized throughout the past decade by the Chronicle of Higher Education's “Great Colleges to Work For” program. John lives with his wife, Sandy in Harrisonburg, VA. Together they raised three daughters who all currently work in public service professions.

Enrollment leaders have choices and decisions to make that will impact not only their college or university, but also the future lives of students. Today, on the Enrollment Edge, I dig into the topic of financial aid and college access with Megan Hartless, Coordinator of Financial Aid and Scholarships at Blue Ridge Community College. Megan is a veteran of building unique and effective financial aid policies that target providing access to higher education. As the landscape of college enrollment changes in the coming years, it is estimated that access to financial resources for first generation and high-need students will increase. College financial aid and enrollment leaders will have to be intentional about providing the limited available financial resources if they hope to enroll and graduate those students. Bottom line? Many colleges will have to shift their aid model from providing what students want, to providing what they need. About our GuestMegan Hartless accidentally began her career in financial aid in 2003 as a graduate assistant doing Federal Work Study at Virginia Commonwealth University while pursuing her MFA in Theatre Pedagogy. After graduating in 2006, she continued her gluttony for punishment and decided to pursue a long-term career in financial aid. She worked in the financial aid office at Mary Baldwin College (now University) for eight years, ending her tenure there as Associate Director in 2014. She has also taught Public Speaking and Communications courses at VCU, John Tyler Community College, and Blue Ridge Community College. She presently serves as the Coordinator of Financial Aid at Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave, Virginia.

From Mitch’s Notebook about the episode “As with some other guests, Erin Kinard is one who I have known personally, at least since the two years of living here in Weaverville. While I did know her for her singing as she has been a regular at Blue mountain here with just her and her guitar, and I did know her to possess both a truly beautiful voice and gift for songwriting there was much more. I did not know until later that she is the president of Girls Rock in North Carolina, is an instrument maker, plays drums, has her own rock duo Rooster, and probably a whole bunch of other things we never got a chance to even get to on this particular episode. We played together on a couple of the selections. I always enjoy the opportunity to really accompany someone and try and match their style the best that I can, particular when it is in a style of music that I don't often get to perform. True to the spirit of our podcast, Erin Kinard is somebody who does many kinds of things in music, never content to be pigeonholed or stick with one genre. Much like my episode with Bill Fouty, this one where we talked a bit about the nature of music making itself as an art and craft as well as play some numbers. I hope it is as enjoyable to listen to as it was for us to record it.” Erin’s Biography Erin Kinard Musician / community organizer / sign language interpreter Erin Kinard has been a member of the Asheville community since 2010 and a lifelong supporter of the arts. Born and raised in Charleston, she attended the Charleston County School of the Arts, studying dance and music. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music History at the College of Charleston. In 2014, Erin founded Girls Rock Asheville, a camp seeking to create more space for more women and girls in music. She currently serves on the board and council of Girls Rock Asheville. Erin earned an associates degree in Sign Language Interpreting from Blue Ridge Community College and has worked in this field in public school, spiritual and mental health settings. Since 2016, Erin has been playing drums and singing in the folk-rock duo, Rooster, with Annie Myers. In February of 2020, the band released an 11 song album of original music. Check their wonderful music out here: https://soundcloud.com/user-568520317/tracks Erin plays guitar and drums actively and also passively plays bass, piano, ukulele, mandolin, harmonica and whatever else she can find. Today's conversation was all about the bees! Fred Hollen, a VA Master Beekeeper with Shenandoah Valley Beekeepers Association drove over to the station from Waynesboro, VA to chat for a bit and educate me on all the bee things. We talked about the average life cycle of a honey bee; got some beekeeper tips; learned about the important role bees/pollinators play in our everyday lives and so much more. So much, in fact, that we had to continue our conversation after we ran out of time on the air. In that segment, we talked about the origination of Africanized bees, common issues new beekeepers encounter, and I learned that you can buy a queen bee! Who knew? Find more information about the Shenandoah Valley Beekeepers Association on their website: http://shenvalleybeekeepers.org/, click here to follow them on Facebook. If you're interested in taking Fred's beekeeping class at Blue Ridge Community College, click here for the details. About The Shenandoah Valley Beekeepers Association The Shenandoah Valley Beekeepers Association was founded in 1982 and exists to serve its members, the local community, and the honeybee for which humans are dependent.  The club promotes the keeping of honeybees in order to increase the local honeybee population. They provide a meeting place or activity each month for the dissemination and sharing of beekeeping information and offer an extensive library of beekeeping books and DVD's to members. SVBA also manages local apiaries for educational and queen-rearing purposes; and, provides honeybee removal from buildings and swarm collection services. They also provide educational honeybee demonstrations to schools and other organizations. During the show, I referenced a previous guest, Rick Copeland with Misty Mountain Meadworks.
