Aerial views of Hurricane Helene's devastation in western North Carolina are hard enough to process, but imagine being in charge of the actual recovery. On this episode, we're going to hear directly from the leaders of these hard-hit communities about what they've witnessed and what they need right now to position for a comeback -- one that everyone expects will take a long time. But they're on it. Just recently, members of the NC League of Municipalities and the NC Association of County Commissioners grouped with state and federal partners for a daylong discussion, physically in the same room, to get everybody on one page in a real discussion of what's ahead. Municipal Equation was on site to gather the points. Municipal Equation is a production of the N.C. League of Municipalities, https://www.nclm.org. Contact host/producer Ben Brown at bbrown@nclm.org.

Hospital readmissions due to inadequate or incorrect treatment cost healthcare and the U.S. government billions of dollars. This is particularly notable in cardiac care. By continually reviewing and revising standards of care, professional medical organizations seek to ensure that the standard of care reflects the latest proven findings regarding treatment and care. Ruth Pierce, a nurse with 37 years of experience, who is also a legal nurse consultant, currently works as a field reviewer for a national accreditation company. She is a charter member of Pat Iyer's LNC Elite coaching program. She shares her wealth of knowledge about how standards are developed, how long it takes for them to be generally adopted, and why knowing the timeline in a legal case is crucial to applying the time-appropriate standard of care principles. She also explains the difference between accreditation, a baseline level of approval, and certification, which characterizes a hospital that goes beyond the basics. The information in this podcast will give you a big-picture view of how standards are developed, changed, and filter down to the clinical level. It will provide you with an essential background for understanding how deviations in standards of care occur. Join me in this episode of Unveiling Standards of Care and Cardiac Care Guidelines - Ruth Pierce What's a leading cause of hospital readmission? How is the medical community addressing this issue? As the school buses get rolling across North Carolina, one elected official from Asheville is calling for teachers to strike if state lawmakers don't use a budget surplus to increase teacher pay. Buncombe County Commissioner Amanda Edwards wrote on Facebook: "The time is right for a statewide teacher strike." She predicted that K-12 employers would not be able to fire striking teachers because of the shortage of educators. When questioned by a reporter, she said she was merely encouraging a "walk out." A local representative for the NC Association of Educators union noted that it's a misdemeanor for teachers to go out on strike. Meanwhile, there is a growing movement to restore "classical education." As the Washington Examiner reports: "[G.K.] Chesterton articulates so well [this vision] of education being the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to the next," Tate said. "But suddenly, there was nother we were passing down. Everything had been dismantled or deconstructed, and there was nothing beautiful or meaningful left to pass down..." Running for NC Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Commissioner, Jenna Wadsworth, is here to talk about the responsibilities of a commissioner of agriculture which include protecting, maintaining and enhancing the production of North Carolina agriculture, as well as promoting public health programs. We also discussed how the legalization of the hemp industry could be an opportunity for farmers in North Carolina. Wadsworth is committed to take care of social, environmental and economic justice. She wants to address environmental issues especially for those who have suffered through natural disasters. Additionally, Wadsworth said she wants to emphasize the reality of climate change. Who is Jenna Wadsworth? Jenna Wadsworth was born in Raleigh, but she grew up off a dirt road on her grandparents' farm in Johnston County which raised hogs, cattle, chickens, corn, cotton, soybeans, and tobacco. Wadsworth made history a decade ago—at the age of 21—by becoming the youngest woman ever elected to political office in North Carolina. For the past decade, she has served the people of Wake County as a Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor. Jenna Wadsworth is running for NC Commissioner of Agriculture on a platform of protecting our small, family farmers; legalizing cannabis; combating climate change; advocating for farmworkers; and expanding both broadband access and healthcare options in our rural communities. She is a graduate of both the NC School of Science and Mathematics in Durham and NC State University. She is the Co-Founder of the progressive nonprofit New Leaders Council - North Carolina, as well as the managing partner of her small business. Last year, Wadsworth was appointed to the NC Advisory Committee of the US Global Leadership Coalition. She is currently tending 45 rows of fruits and vegetables, fruit trees and vines, as well as nut trees this season on her family farm. Her campaign is proudly endorsed by over 100 current and former elected officials, including former Commissioner of Agriculture—Britt Cobb, former NC Court of Appeals Judge Linda Stephens, EMILY's List, the NC AFL-CIO, the NC Association of Educators, the NC Sierra Club, and others. Featured Guest Kim Campbell, Lincoln County EMS ManagerIn this episode, Kim Campbell, the Emergency Medical Services Manager for Lincoln County, talks about her background (she’s a Lincoln County local!) and what inspired her to go into EMS. She explains the differences in the roles of paramedic and EMT and shares what it’s like to help people who are in emergency situations. Listeners will get a real behind-the-scenes look at how first responders in Lincoln County collaborate in emergency situations. Kim explains how they all deal with stress and exposure to trauma, and she talks about all the continuing education that everyone in EMS completes each year. In addition to completing classes monthly, Kim talks about the roles she plays in the NC Association of EMS Administrators and the Lincoln County Substance Use Coalition. It is important for the public to know that many, many families have faced the disease of addiction, and the goal of the coalition is to offer resources, reduce stigma, provide education, and improve substance use services in Lincoln County. It really is about meeting the person where they are on their addiction journey and helping meet their needs. Kim also explains the safety procedures they’ve always had in place as well as the new ones put in place due to COVID. The biggest takeaway for listeners will be hearing how much passion Kim has for service and for her community and family. This week 1.4 million North Carolina children returned to class for the start of a new school year. The new year begins just a little over three months after an estimated 20,000 teachers marched in Raleigh asking the General Assembly for more support for public education. This week we talk to the president of the NC Association of Educators, the group that organized the march, on what was accomplished and what he believes still needs to be done. We also talk to the superintendent of one of the state’s fastest-growing school districts, Johnston County Public Schools, about the challenges and opportunities he sees as the new school year begins. Guests: • Mark Jewell, President, NC Association of Educators • Dr. Ross Renfrow, Superintendent, Johnston County Public Schools
North Carolina public schools have about $8 billion dollars in construction, renovation and repair needs. Cracked walls, outdated inefficient heating and cooling systems and school grounds that look like trailer parks due to the number of mobile classroom units are all too common. And now new school building requirements are being proposed to enhance school security. Will the General Assembly put a statewide school building bond on the ballot in November? Last year average pay for principals in North Carolina ranked 50th nationally. The General Assembly responded with $35 million in pay raises for school-based administrators and a new principal pay plan. That plan is now generating concerns that many principals may actually lose pay and that it may create a disincentive for top principals to take jobs at chronically low-performing, often high poverty schools. This week on Education Matters we discuss what’s next with our guests. Guests: • Dr. Ray Spain, Superintendent, Warren County Schools • Matt Wight, Principal, Apex Friendship H.S., Wake County • Katherine Joyce, Executive Director, NC Association of School Administrators • Jason Griffin, 2017 NC Principal of the Year, Perquimans County
