On today's Enrollment Edge, Jay has a conversation with Dr. John Downey, President of Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia. As the President of a community college, Dr. Downey has a deep interest in the evolution of higher education to meet the growing needs of today's workforce. As you will hear in the episode, there are stark realities facing all of all of us in the coming decades. Much of our conversation connects with a recent article by Emsi called the Demographic Drought – the coming sans-demic. We'll talk about the immediate labor force needs and how higher education must find a response to the widening gap between those needs and traditional degrees, in order to avoid a "Hunger Games" recruitment environment. About Our GuestDr. John A. Downey became the fifth President of Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave, Virginia, in 2009. Prior to being named president, he served as the Vice President for Instruction and Student Services and in various other roles at the College since 1992. Before arriving at Blue Ridge, Dr. Downey worked in student services offices at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, Massachusetts. Downey received his Bachelor of Arts degree from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. He completed his doctoral program in Higher Education Administration at the University of Virginia, where he was awarded the Annette Gibbs Research Publication Award. Downey served on three of the most recent Virginia Community College System (VCCS) strategic planning development committees and chaired the 2021 Strategic Initiatives Task Force. He has served as the chairperson, or as a member, of numerous community boards, including the Shenandoah Valley Partnership for Economic Development, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, the Shenandoah Valley Workforce Development Board, the Harrisonburg City Rotary Club, On The Road Collaborative, and the GenEdge Alliance Board of Trustees (formerly the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Extension Partnership).Under his leadership, BRCC has garnered recognition from around the state for its progressive workforce initiatives and partnerships. In 2010, he was recognized as the most supportive president of the year at the Enactus (formerly SIFE) National Exposition. Blue Ridge Community College has consistently been recognized throughout the past decade by the Chronicle of Higher Education's “Great Colleges to Work For” program. John lives with his wife, Sandy in Harrisonburg, VA. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Call for action for German university groups!, published by Arne on February 2, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Are you part of the German community? Read it and leave your feedback! Are you a community builder? I would love to hear your thoughts. And for everyone, I'd welcome every feedback on my first forum post. TL;DR There are no big local student groups (30+ active members) in Germany. I want them to grow, because student groups and friends are among the most important factors for the growth of the EA community. Reasons why no large local student groups have appeared might include cultural differences to the US and UK, as well as the status quo of the German EA community. That's why, I call for coordination and a spirit of optimism. Here is a short plan for the coming semester: First Week of the semester: Advertisement Second Week: Intro talk + social Third Week on the Weekend: Impact workshop Fourth Week: 1-1s and social Fifth Week: German-wide fellowship starts as well as a career planning fellowship Throughout the semester: Socials as well as lunch breaks in the uni café Halfway through the fellowships and the semester: ((f)un)conferences After the semester: another ((f)un)conference Plus EAGx Berlin in autumn ^^ What's the problem? State of EA groups in Germany There are currently 22 German local groups listed on effektiveraltruismus.de and 25 groups on eahub. More than half of the local groups are student groups. And even though the German community is the third-largest EA community, the typical German local group is in a tough spot. The core of a typical group is at best a strong group of friends of max. 4-5 people. The average to me looks more like 2.5 organizers per student group. Dying student groups are not uncommon. In addition to the local chapters, NEAD (Netzwerk für Effektiven Altruismus Deutschland) exists as the Germany-wide head organization and runs their own fellowship (now for the third time in a row), writes a newsletter and provides some group support. Just recently, the German community hired it's second paid community builder (part-time), welcome, Christiane Ranke. Until then, it was just Manuel Allgaier, who also was responsible mostly for EA Berlin. Furthermore, there has been less funding requested for German groups than for their counterparts in the US, UK, and probably France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Last but not least there are very few senior EAs working from and/or in Germany. State of EA groups outside Germany Student groups outside Germany are hitting membership numbers far beyond everything that we are dreaming of. I am remembering thousands of newsletter subscriptions in Yale and the board alone of EA Oxfords student group consists of 18 people according to their website. PISE in Rotterdam has an executive board of six and six additional committees. Look how they celebrated their giving pledges. Some local groups even have an (un)official EA house, office hours, or one of the craziest things I've heard was an EA (dance) ball. Another big step would be to hire campus specialists for German universities, or to be present with workshops and/or a booth at job fairs. Non-EA groups in Germany Outside the EA realm, large student groups and initiatives do exist. Student parliament and university political organizations attract a lot of new students (often close to political parties RCDS, JULIS, JUSOS, SDS, Campusgrün). Similarly, Antifa (loose network of very different types of smaller and bigger groups), Green peace (100 groups, ~50 people per group (unsure)), Amnesty (650 groups) and Enactus (1700 students in 35 German cities, average of 48 students per group) are among the biggest student networks/initiatives I can think of from the top of my head. Some of these networks have adopted grassroots democracies (Basisdem...

On campus, one student organization couples entrepreneurship and sustainability by recycling plastic bottle caps. Appalachian State's Enactus chapter, a global nonprofit organization with the goal to address sustainability concerns, hopes to use these bottle caps and recycle them into products that can be used by local businesses. According to The Appalachian, these products are anything that can be heated up to temperatures and placed into different molds to be turned into items such as coasters. The project is still in the early stages of development, with newly purchased machines being used to experiment and develop new items for sale. In national news, children aged 12 to 17 may soon be able to become vaccinated without their parents consent if a new California bill is passed. According to The Associated Press, Democratic Senator Scott Wiener made the case that “children deserve the right to protect themselves” against the rising case numbers of Covid-19. Senator Wiener argued his position as California state law already allows people 12 and older to consent to the Hepatitis B vaccines and to treatments for sexually transmitted infections, substance abuse and mental health disorders. Opponents to the bill state that removing parents from the decision making process of getting vaccinated is a step in the wrong direction. In world news, the US has major embargo plans if Russia continues to put military pressure on Eastern Ukraine. According to NPR, the embargo would stop all exports of electronics that are used in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, defense and aerospace production. The US is also working with allies to coordinate similar embargos that will put significant pressure on the Russian economy. However, experts have questioned limiting tech exports to Russia, stating that only withholding technologies to Russia will not be enough to deter further military actions. Today's weather comes to you from BooneWeather.com. Expect clear skies and temperatures ranging from 33 to 13 degrees, with winds reaching up to 15 miles per hour. Be sure to stay warm out there!

Enactus is a global nonprofit and Appalachian State's chapter was founded in 2018. The club's primary project is labeled as “C6,” where they reutilize bottle caps, turning them into different products. In United States news, The Wall Street Journal reports that the standardized test, the SAT, will be transitioning into a digital format. As the test is thought to have become archaic, this recreation will reduce its length, update its relevance, and make it available to be taken on personal devices within a testing facility or school hosting the exam. The change will begin to take place internationally in March 2023, and in the United States in March 2024. In World News, The New York Times documents that an influx of snow has blanketed areas in Greece and Turkey. As these locations are accustomed to high temperatures in the summer, they are less equipped to accommodate this type of weather. On Monday, about 3,500 individuals were rescued from the icy roads of Athens, with around 1,200 cars remaining stranded. Today's weather update is brought to you by BooneWeather.com.

Having a network of advisors is one of the most powerful ways we can confidently navigate free agency, especially for new entrepreneurs.   There's so much value in having an infrastructure of support around you. If we want to build a business that will give us freedom we need a solid foundation, utilizing good advice from the right people.   What many people discover in their free agency journey is the power of human capital, and why it's just as critical as financial capital. What are the benefits free agents get from maturing their network and tapping into the wisdom and experience of other people? How can we communicate effectively with advisors and investors?   In this episode, I'm joined by entrepreneur, business advisor, CEO of Blackthorne Capital Management, and my husband Peter J. Layton. He talks about his career, and the most important lessons he's learned along the way.   Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode What it takes to be a successful investor One of the biggest challenges investors face is investing in an industry or niche we don't have experience in. In that case, it's important for that venture to have a lead investor. Go into the venture with someone who knows that sector well and brings in cash because they understand and believe in the idea.   The biggest mistake entrepreneurs make Entrepreneurs shoot themselves in the foot by not keeping their investors up to speed with what's going on.
