Recent Artist Series soloist, master class instructor, and chapel speaker Dr. David Parker adds this episode of OnMission to the roster. Contrary to stereotypical expectations, Dr. Parker's exuberant laugh and unpretentious demeanor convey genuine warmth and belie his professional expertise that has afforded him invitations to perform and teach nationally and abroad, including opportunity to sing in a backup ensemble for renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Marveling, Dr. Parker recalls the Lord's innumerable blessings, which engender gratitude and awe that drive his mission. He and host Dr. Matt Davis note how sacred music as worship should incorporate the same awe, coupled with reverence and fear of God, reflecting His glory, righteousness, and holiness with intentional, joyful worship. Having been a music educator for 41 years, Dr. Parker agrees that properly-motivated pursuit of success is not wrong, and he justifies encouraging excellence in students.
This week, Jen sits down with Dr. Marissa Guarriello to talk about the impact that mentorship and challenging horizons have had on her work. Through her journey, Dr. Guarriello has experienced music education in many facets: first as a student, then as a music educator, and on into graduate work and teaching at the collegiate level. Listen to learn more about Marissa (the first host and founder of this very podcast!) and head to the link below to learn about her new book, "Onward and Upward":https://fflat-books.com/product/onward-and-upward-paperbook/
MBU associate professor Janet Tschida, regales host Dr. Matt Davis with the story of her delayed music education and the setback that threatened it. She explains her mission saying, “I remember in college thinking … what does God want me to do … where … and with whom … I was missing the fundamental question … who does God want me to be.” Having established her God-intended identity, she says her mission is “to encourage those in my circle of influence to do the same,” a sphere which now includes interns and students. Discussing benefits of music, Dr. Davis expressed appreciation for perspectives his sons gained in the music prep program, which “set the stage … to say, ‘Whatever, God, you've given me, that's something I can use in ministry,'” which Dr. Davis asserts in conclusion, “is a very Maranatha thing.”
Episode Notes My guests include Sarah Houston, aka the Water Warrior and Executive Director of Protect Our Aquifer. For many, including myself do not understand the xAI supercomputer project. Lately, there has been some conversation and doubt about the proposed location, and why the Boxtown community feels left out of the process. She explains why. Next, the former Executive Director of the Landers Center in Southaven was recently fired after 14 years but the reason raises some interesting questions. Todd Mastry says it was because he was booking too many Black artists and does not like the crowds they draw from Memphis. These statements came from the CVB and members of the Board of Supervisors. He has since filed a lawsuit claiming his civil rights were violated and it would be illegal under the Civil Rights Act. Daily Memphian reporter Rob Moore broke the story and joins me to discuss. Finally, it's not a secret that there is an abundance of musical talent in our city. Recently, an organization you may be familiar with called the Grammys took note. They honored one of our very own with a major honor. Adrian Maclin, is recipient of the 2025 Music Educator award presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. The Cordova High School Choir Director joins me to talk about that honor and what makes him the most proudest about this recognition. That and more on air and online Monday, 6 pm on WYXR 91.7 FM. Also, WYXR.org, Tunein, Facebook Live, YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts. It's time to talk!

Music is the medium, and helping students feel seen and valued is the goal. This is the fuel behind Maize Elementary School teacher Katie Todd's music instruction to kindergarten through fourth grade students. Katie earned her Bachelors of Music Education in 2012 from Kansas State University. She continued her education by pursuing a Masters of Music Education degree at her alma mater, graduating in 2017. Todd is in her twelfth year of teaching and currently teaches in Maize USD 266, where she is admired by colleagues, parents, and students alike.Katie finds much of the inspiration for lessons from her time spent with her two young daughters, Olivia and Charlotte, and her husband.Being a mother gives her insight into what families need from their educators to help them connect and bond. Additionally, she teaches private oboe lessons, is a New Teacher Mentor, and collaborates with Kansas State University to support new and future Elementary Music Teachers. In January of 2024 Todd was recognized as a Music for All: Advocacy in Action award winner for the Elementary Excellence category. She received this for her efforts over the past three years to connect students and their families with Kindie music artists through their grade level performances. She was also selected as the 2024 Elementary Teacher of the Year Nominee for USD266. In August of 2024 Katie released her first single Chickadee under the artist name “Katie T”. Her entrance into the Kindie music world came after encouragement received from friends and family as well as members of the Children's Music Network. She was fortunate to work with Bret Turner and Ian Walters of The Tallest Kid in the Room on this release. The song can be heard on all streaming platforms. Katie loves building relationships with her students and families and is passionate about helping them connect to each other and finding a deeper understanding of themselves through music. This quote can be found on the wall of her classroom: “ This is why I teach music…not because I expect you to major in music, not because I expect you to play or sing all your life, not so you can relax, not so you can have fun, but so you will be human, so you will recognize beauty, so you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world, so you will have something to clog to, so you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good. In short, more life.” - author unknownChickadee by Katie Todd

Collins was convicted of felony murder, family violence aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony. STORY 2: Woodstock Voters Could Decide on Residency Requirement for Senior Homestead Exemption Woodstock City Council is considering amending the senior homestead property tax exemption, introducing a bill that proposes a five-year residency requirement for future beneficiaries. The bill, HB 1013, sponsored by Rep. Brad Thomas, is set for a voter referendum on the May primary ballot. Current recipients of the exemption would be grandfathered in. Mayor Michael Caldwell believes the amendment ensures individuals contribute their fair share in property taxes. Woodstock seniors aged 62 and above can qualify for the exemption without income or home value limits. Additionally, other bills, SB 388 and HB 1025, aim to eliminate the cap on Cherokee County seniors' school property tax exemptions, with a local referendum election scheduled for May. STORY 5: Fani Willis Discloses 'Personal Relationship' With Special Prosecutor in Trump Case Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis revealed her "personal relationship" with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired in the election interference case against Donald Trump. However, Willis argued that this relationship does not warrant dismissing the racketeering indictment against Trump and 18 co-defendants. A motion by one defendant, Michael Roman, alleged an improper relationship and questioned Wade's qualifications. Willis stated there are no legal grounds for disqualification, emphasizing her lack of financial or personal conflicts. Republicans argue the case is politically motivated, prompting a Georgia Senate committee investigation. State Rep. Charlice Byrd introduced a resolution for the Georgia House to consider impeachment proceedings against Willis. "The first year is the worst. The kids will want everything that's not you, and that's OK. They don't want to know what you know until they know that you care about them, so you just wear them down with kindness and that sense of wonder about music. That's my trick. I try and find what they wonder about music and then find ways to hook that into the materials I'm choosing.”Monika Tabor serves as Director of Choirs for Lake Stevens High School and as advisor for LSHS Associate Student Body government. She has a love for vocal jazz that was instilled in her by her junior high school and high school music teachers in Marysville and Lake Stevens. Teaching in public schools since 2004, she has taught vocal jazz, choral music, musical theater, general music/music history, as well as stagecraft and sound design. Her music direction credits include Godspell and Mamma Mia! wiith LSHS Drama, as well as You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, The Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, Pippin, and White Christmas with Prairie High School in Vancouver, WA. Tabor earned her B.A. in Music from the University of Washington and her teacher certification was earned from Western Washington University. She recently earned her Master of Educational Leadership and principal certification from Eastern Washington University. Currently serving as President-Elect for Washington State American Choral Directors Association (WAACDA.org), she has also participated as an active member of The National Association for Music Education, and Washington Music Educators. Welcome to the Wellbeing and career world podcast, I am delighted to be chatting with internationally performed composer and seasoned music educator. After 17 years of teaching music in the classroom in South Florida and going through four music director job transitions in two different schools, as well as general music, choir, and two string orchestra positions, Adrian realized there was a gap in his music education training. In addition to teaching, Adrian is the founder of Leap Year Music Publishing, which publishes string music for elementary, middle, and high school ensembles. His compositions appear on the Florida, Texas, Maryland, and Georgia Orchestra Association Music Performance Assessment Lists. His compositions are distributed through J.W. Pepper and have been performed throughout the world. He takes pride in creating music that is fun and pedagogically sound at all levels. Adrian received his BA in music from the University of Miami and his master's degree in music education at Florida International University.
