Some people are born with green genes or a knack for nature in their blood. More than two decades ago, Keith Ramsey started a landscape and design firm in Cary, NC. From the ground up, the firm–then known as Environmental Design and Management–transformed from a small, three-man business to what it is today. In a grassroots effort to provide their community with garden supplies, plants of every type, landscaping services, home decor, boutique gifts, and interior design, the Ramsey's changed their business name, purchased six acres, one building, and a small shed. Today, Garden Supply Company celebrates over 20 years of growth and employs more than 40 team members who share their passion for all things green. We talk shop about what it was like for him finding his passion for plants and turning that into a job which led to a career and how he became a business owner. Gardening is scientifically proven good for your mental health and Keith has experienced a large influx during COVID-19 of people looking to do some self-care. At the same time, Keith experienced a loss of 50% of his staff and has been rebuilding his team. His love of gardening started when he was a kid and he soon came to decide that it is what he wanted to do with his life. At 13 he started selling plants to a local nursery and that was the beginning of his career. The garden supply company has about five acres and does more than you would expect in a local nursery. In addition to having all the supplies for your garden or landscaping, they also sell baby chicks, have driftwood and salvage items, a wood fire pizza oven, and a partnership with Bond Brothers to sell their beers. Joe and Josh took advantage of having the expert and talked about lawn care in NC, growing grass under big trees, cutting roots, preparing the soil, how to get rid of trees, and more.Find out more about the Garden Supply Company in Cary.

Bond Brothers was named the best new brewery in the nation by USA Today in 2016. Here's the story of how brothers Jay & Jeremy Bond and their two business partners had so much success so quickly they threw out their 5-year plan after just 6 months, since they were growing exponentially faster than they had anticipated. With no significant hospitality experience between the four of them, the guys were able to approach the business organically and with a fresh perspective, and have had no turnover after three years in business. We talked about why they don't micromanage, collaboration within the beer community, the three pillars of their business, why quality is becoming more important these days since customers are more educated on craft beers, the trend of craft breweries being acquired by large multinational companies and the impact that is having on the industry, and more. Jay and Jeremy are extremely nice, genuine, soft-spoken, humble guys who have built an absolutely phenomenal business. Enjoy...
In this episode we speak with Jesse Conklin of BOND Brothers who has a background in the utility space and in particular the building and planning of Co-Gen plants for college campuses. This episode is going to be a bit more educational in nature discussing what Co-Generation (sometimes called CHP Combined Heat and Power) is? As well as, the benefits such as resiliency, cost savings and environmental impact. Before you listen I’m going to express in my primitive way what is Co-generation and how I’d describe it is; the burning of fuel to spin a turbine to create electricity and then capturing the heat from burning the gas to produce steam or hot water to heat and/or cool a building. Beyond that there’s a number of other ways that more of the energy is extracted from the process, but that exceeds my pay grade and is why a guy like Jesse is on the show. The is Part 1 where we cover the basics and come back for Part 2 when we go broader and discuss bigger subjects like environmental impact (renewables), uses for/ setting up district energy plants, breaking down a use case for viability of a Co-Gen Plant.
