Trigger Warning: This episode features discussions of self harm, disordered eating and alcoholic tendencies. Please see our resources below if anything in this episode brings up anything for you. Today's episode is an incredibly raw and personal one. Both Brooke and Matty have been working to give up some of their vices. Matty has been tackling sobriety and Brooke has been focussing on strengthening her relationships. This has also led her to treating herself better and her realisation that she has been using food as a way of self harm. In today's episode, I sat down with Brooke Riley, the creative force behind the DIY blog Re-Fabbed, and the founder of Re-Fabbed Boutique, to delve into her entrepreneurial journey and the lessons she's learned along the way. The Power of Social Media and Personal Connection One of the pivotal moments in Brooke's journey was her decision to leverage Facebook live video content to connect with her audience. This strategic move allowed her to foster strong relationships with her followers, which translated into increased engagement and growth for her blog. It's a testament to the importance of authenticity and energy in every interaction, a principle that Brooke holds dear. This unexpected demand led her to explore the world of e-commerce with Re-Fab Boutique. Starting with dropshipping, Brooke faced the challenges of long shipping times and logistical hurdles, but her transparency and authenticity won over her audience, leading to impressive sales. Embracing Imperfection and Taking Risks Throughout our conversation, Brooke emphasizes the importance of embracing imperfection and the willingness to take calculated risks. She shares her transition from dropshipping to managing inventory and the mindset shift required to start small and scale based on customer feedback and demand. Overcoming the Fear of Imperfection A common struggle for many aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, is the fear of imperfection. Brooke and I discuss the need to overcome this fear and the power of taking action, even when things seem messy or unconventional. Brooke's approach to launching her coaching group and various businesses without waiting for the perfect timing is a powerful example of this principle in action. The Joy of Serving and Connecting with Your Audience Brooke also highlights the significance of serving and connecting with your audience. She urges entrepreneurs to personalize their approach, understand their community, and find joy in serving others. This, she believes, is the foundation for building authentic relationships and successful businesses. Consistency, Authenticity, and Adaptability Our discussion also touched on the challenges of maintaining consistency and the pressure to see immediate results. Brooke acknowledges the struggles but encourages entrepreneurs to stay committed to showing up consistently and focusing on the long-term impact of their efforts. The Unpredictability of Online Traction Brooke shares her experience of a two-year-old post suddenly going viral, reminding us of the unpredictable nature of online traction. She advises treating each viewer or customer as the most important person, as this can lead to exponential growth over time. The Entrepreneurial Journey: A Parallel to Motherhood Drawing a parallel between the challenges of building a business and the early stages of motherhood, I emphasize the need to prepare for difficulties, seek feedback, and be open to making adjustments. Both Brooke and I stress the importance of consistency and the willingness to adapt and pivot when necessary. Seeking Feedback and Building Relationships Brooke discusses the need for self-assessment and the willingness to change strategies if the current approach is not yielding results. We both underscore the value of seeking feedback, being open to constructive criticism, and building relationships within the business community. Embracing Challenges and Uncertainties In closing, I encourage entrepreneurs to embrace the challenges and uncertainties of business. Through MiloTreeCart, I offer support and guidance, emphasizing the normalcy of feeling uncertain and the potential for growth through experimentation and learning from others. An Invitation to Connect I invite you to connect with me for further assistance and reassurance on your entrepreneurial journey. Brooke Riley and I share our experiences and insights to empower you in navigating the complexities of building and growing a business, and I'm here to support you every step of the way. Remember, the path to success is paved with authenticity, service, perseverance, and the courage to embrace imperfection. Join us in celebrating these universal principles of entrepreneurship and take bold steps towards your dreams. This is session 2 of Journalism for Liberation & Combat. If you missed session 1, Journalism for Liberation & Combat was a mini-course that Jared Ware (Jay from MAKC) helped convene along with Brooke Terpstra who is an organizer with Oakland Abolition & Solidarity. We worked closely to put this together with Jared Ball from imixwhatilike and Black Power Media, and with a number of other radical journalists who you will hear from throughout the series. Brooke Terpstra titled Session 2: “From Survival to Winning - Hegemony and Liberation on the Ground.” Both Brooke and Jared Ware cover the presentation in this session and the Jared Ball returns for a Q&A answering questions from the participants in the Journalism for Liberation & Combat course on the heels of Session 1 which Jared Ball gave the main presentation. This conversation is really about making the concepts of culture and hegemony real for folks and about sharing a media struggle from the coverage of the Prison Strike in 2018 which Brooke and Jay were very involved in as members of the Prison Strike Media Relations team for that action. There is a brief introductory conversation from Brooke and Jay on this session, and there is a lengthy Q&A with Jay, Brooke and Jared Ball at the end of the conversation. These sessions took place over zoom, and you can watch this session in its totality over on Black Power Media (session 1 also!) which is a great channel on Youtube with tons of amazing content from a Black Left perspective. There was also a syllabus to the course, which we recommend you check out. On this episode, Brooke shares her battle with an eating disorder and disordered eating during college running and after graduation. Nearly 10% of the American population has an eating disorder in their lifetime. Unfortunately a large percentage of those battling eating disorders are athletes, specifically female athletes. Let's talk mental health! This week we sat down with Honey Mama's Brooke Miller, founder and owner of Honey for Moms and Kathryn Pozniak, resident therapist at Honey. Both Brooke and Kathryn are mental health therapists by trade and teach us that its important to take the time to focus on a mothers needs. When Brooke moved across the country she started Honey for Mom's because it was something she desperately needed after the birth of her daughter. Taking out the sterile environment that can sometimes exist within the Mental Health field, Brooke created a space for moms to come and receive the resources they need to thrive within their motherhood journey. They say it takes a village to raise a child and Honey for Mom's brings the village to you. With a focus on building its community to inspire healing, they offer a wide range of services and various types of group therapy, one-on-one therapy, yoga, co-working space and childcare. Teaching us that sometimes stripping the labels and redirecting our messaging can be transformative and that rediscovering ourselves in our motherhood journey is possible. In the final episode of this season, Brooke and Kelly look at what it means to be OK with being just OK. Spurred by a comment in the Let It Be Facebook group, Kelly and Brooke wanted to talk about the idea of simply being mediocre in life. That not everything is about striving and bettering and being at the top of your game, and not surprisingly, they have both similar and different views on this. Both Brooke and Kelly are strivers in certain areas, but Brooke is a more go with the flow person in general, whereas Kel likes to do things as well as humanly possible all the time. It’s part of the reason she’s so successful in everything she does. Interestingly though, they both understand the importance of living a life with contentment, not using striving as an excuse to be unhappy. The Facebook comment also touched on the idea of selfishness – is it selfish to not use our talents and strengths to their fullest capacity, thereby starving the world of our gifts – or do we not owe the world anything?
