Sustainability is at forefront of most brands. It's a big part of our everyday (personal) lives and we're working very hard to ensure How to be a Redhead walks down the sustainability track too. To kick off Earth Week (April 22nd) and this important conversation, we're talking with the founder of Petal, Jason Domangue. Petal's mission is to give accessibility to sustainability right at home. They created a biodegradable, all-natural foaming hand soap made with aluminum reusable packaging that makes cleaning really cool. All Spring Deluxe + April H2BAR Box subscribers received a full-size Petal aluminum hand soap pump and soap pods. Subscribe Now!We're asking him questions like:Why did you start Petal? What does it mean to be sustainable? What is actually recyclable?Do you feel like the world is headed in the right direction? We read on Petal's website: “Personal care products contribute more than 500 million plastic bottles to landfills each year, and are among the product categories with the highest daily usage yet lowest recycling rates. Less than 8% of these plastic bottles and packages are recycled and 28,000 tons of plastics are added to the ocean daily.” What can brands do better? How do you get people to care before it's too late? How can a consumer shop for eco-friendly products? You may have heard natural redheads need more anesthesia. Is this true? Is it false? Is it case-by-case? We believe knowledge is power and we wanted to dedicate an entire episode about this topic with an actual anesthesiologist. We're excited to welcome David Sherer, MD to today's podcast. He's an American anesthesiologist, health/medicine expert, and the author of five books. He is a graduate of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital anesthesia residency program. He is President and Founder of Consolidated Medicine, a medical and healthcare consulting group, and has written on the legal aspects of medicine, the economics of healthcare, and the shortcomings inherent in Western medicine. His website is etherthriller.com. In 2021, his non-fiction book What Your Doctor Won't Tell You and his novel Into the Ether were nominated for the National Book Award. He will answer the following questions:1.They say natural redheads need more anesthesia. Is this true?2. We have read that redheads need about 20% more anesthesia. Is that percentage accurate or does it change person by person?3. When we think of anesthesia, we think of surgery and being put under for hours at a time. What about local topical anesthetics, such as novocaine. Do redheads need more of that too?4. Do anesthesiologists get trained about this in medical school? And is this something to talk to your doctor/surgeon about because it's fairly new knowledge?5. We did a whole other podcast episode about why redheads feel less pain, and how our brains process pain differently. They say redheads need to be aware that they are likely more sensitive to pain-killing medication, such as opioids. Are you able to speak about if natural redheads need lower doses of opioids?6. Are there any other redhead facts you know about in the medical world?Head to podcast notes to see even more: https://www.howtobearedhead.com/do-redheads-need-more-anesthesia-an-anesthesiologist-tells-all/Finally Have Brows - a tinted eyebrow gel made by How to be a Redhead. Let's take you back to 2011. We, Adrienne + Stephanie, moved to New York City after launching HowtobeaRedhead.com. We were working to start a social/website presence around loving your red hair, something that had never been done before. Although other New York natural redheads were an inspiration to us: Julianne Moore, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Jessica Chastain -- there was one who stood out amongst the rest. Her name is Taylor Tomasi Hill. Yes, yes, we know. She is not a natural redhead, but her street fashion was EVERYTHING to us. It is still is.Taylor's style oozes confidence. Her hair is always styled effortlessly. And her red hair is vibrant and loud. See some of her favorite looks by clicking here. Our dream was to accidentally run into her strutting down New York City streets in a leather skirt, the perfect heal, a floral top, and wavy red hair. Or maybe even platform shoes, loud-printed pants, and a leather jacket. Or, maybe even a leopard scarf, a great blouse and matching leopard sunglasses. TWO REDHEAD GIRLS CAN DREAM, RIGHT?!The dream never happened because we were never at the right place at the right time. But, who knows what the future holds. *Fingers are always crossed*So, you can imagine our excitement when Taylor's hair colorist, Gion Vincent started tagging @HowtobeaRedhead on Instagram. It's our absolute pleasure to have Gion Vincent on today's podcast. He's a true hair color virtuoso known for his work from the most natural blondes to dramatic redheads. He's known for his versatility in creating high fashion hair color. Gion originally trained under the very watchful eye of Beth Minardi. He has perfected his skills and you can visit him at the Sam Brocato Salon in New York City. Taylor Tomasi Hill revealed Gion was the architect of her signature copper locks in the Fashion week issue of Goop magazine and it provided Gion with a ton of buzz. He is sophisticated and has a nuanced approach to creating rich, stunning hair color.Plus, Gion's mother is a natural-born redhead, so he really understands redheads.Head to the podcast notes to see products mentioned, Taylor's street fashion and more:Want to help us spread the news about the How to be a Redhead brand and this podcast? This is one of the most powerful episodes we have ever recorded. We're talking about bullying + trauma, and how to get the tools to heal. Dr. Marianna Strongin is a natural redhead and a licensed clinical psychologist in Manhattan. She's the founder of Strong in Therapy (https://strongintherapy.com/). She is trained to treat mood and anxiety disorders and a variety of life transitional issues. Through exploration of feelings, behaviors, and life choices Dr. Strongin helps clients become stronger and more confident individuals. She has an incredible story. She immigrated from Moldova to the USA when she was 8-years-old. Her first language is Russian and she did not speak English when she arrived. On top of being the only student who didn't speak English, she was also a redhead. “It was awful. I was called 'Big Red' 'Flame Crotch' 'Red' etc,” says Dr. Strongin. “Being called out for being a redhead significantly diminished my self-esteem growing up.” She says her mom worked really hard to equalize it by emphasizing how important being different was. Now she values her differences and her red hair is the thing she loves most about myself. She uses her background and experience of feeling "different" to further understand and feel for her patients. We're excited for Dr. Strongin to give How to be a Redhead's listeners tools to value their differences, boost their confidence, and love their red hair, too. Today is also the launch day for Finally Have Brows Volumizing redhead eyebrow gel! It's the second drop in the Finally Have Brows series and is specially formulated and curated by us, Adrienne and Stephanie. Finally Have Brows is available in the original Longwearing version, and now in a Volumizing option too. Both options tint and provide perfect redhead eyebrows! We're here to talk about one of our favorite topics: FRECKLES! We'll go in-depth about how to take care of freckles, skin routine, acne, redhead skin and more. Our guest is natural redhead, Haley Smith-Torres. She is known as "The Freckled Aesthetician" on social media. Haley is the owner and solo esthetician behind The Freckled Skin Studio in Forney, TX (outside Dallas). Haley's skin background allows her to specialize in advanced skincare treatments. Her salon specializes in customized facial treatments, face reality acne bootcamp, nano channeling and advanced peel treatments. If you heard “acne bootcamp” and want to know more, we will go into detail with her on today's podcast. They're advanced chemical peels and she is able to effortlessly guide her clients on their journey to their best skin because she herself also knows the debilitating tolls acne and other skin concerns can have on one's mental health. Outside of the Esthetic world she's also a mother to 3 beautiful boys. We know you mentioned being able to relate to your clients who have/had acne and the effect it can take on their mental health.3.What was your redhead skin like growing up? 4.Let's talk about acne a bit more – when a client comes in who has acne, what do you do for them? Is every client's situation different? 5.Let's talk freckles! Your salon's brand is based on the fact that you're a “freckled aesthetician”. How is freckled skin different? What skin tips do you give clients with freckled skin? 6.Walk us through it – you have a redhead or something with really sensitive skin come to you for skin help. They have acne, skin that irritates easily. What do you do? What treatments? What skin routine is recommended? 7.Do you truly feel like redhead skin is different from others? 8.What does your skin routine look like?9.What's your favorite makeup Want to help us spread the news about the How to be a Redhead brand and this podcast? We're talking about CBD skincare and why redheads should use it! To quickly break down the difference between CBD, hemp seed oil, marijuana.CBD is short for cannabidiol and known to have medicinal properties. It is legal and is not marijuana and does not make you high. It is extracted from the entire hemp plant.Hemp oil is only extracted from hemp seeds. It does not make you high and medicinal properties are not as strong as CBD. It is legal.Marijuana is the plant with a high potency of THC and people smoke or consume it to feel "high". It is illegal in many states. Our guest is Sammie Smith, natural redhead + Chief Product Officer at No, Thank You ™ CBD Skincare (https://nty.co). She got into skincare when she was 18-years-old while modeling in New York and struggling with acne. Being such a science nerd, she got into researching what was happening to her skin and why. That is pretty much where her love affair with skincare started. A few years later when she moved to Los Angeles, she started studying nutrition in school. This led Sammie to a huge lifestyle shift where she started looking at what was in her products and switched everything to all natural and clean products. This was before the clean beauty movement and there were not many high-quality clean products on the market. So, she decided to start making products herself. A friend asked Sammie to join his CBD start-up company and run the skin care division. This is how she got connected with No, Thank You!Being able to create products that have such an impact on someone's self confidence, and makes them feel good about themselves is really what drives her and makes her feel so lucky to do what she does. Here are a few questions we will ask her on the podcast:1. For those listening who are new to CBD, what is it? What are its benefits?2. Why should someone make a switch to CBD?3.We featured No Thank You's Face Oil in our most recent Winter Deluxe H2BAR Box (https://shop.howtobearedhead.com/collections/beauty/products/winter-deluxe-h2bar-box-extra-boxes-remaining-in-warehouse). We love that it's for those with sensitive skin and combats many characteristics redheads experience such as redness, pigmentation and dark spots. Tell us more about why this brand and product is so unique!4.How do you choose the right CBD products for your skin type?5. What's your absolute favorite skincare product?6.Let's talk redhead makeup products! What is your favorite?Want to help us spread the news about the How to be a Redhead brand and this podcast? It's Kiss a Ginger Day! While the holiday may appear silly on the surface, it actually has a greater significance beyond just locking lips. International Kiss a Ginger Day was invented by a Facebook group in 2009 in order to combat another “holiday” previously created for harassing redheads, Kick a Ginger Day. Inspired by an episode of South Park released in 2005, Kick a Ginger Day was created as a Facebook group by a 14-year-old boy from Vancouver in 2008. The holiday was no joke—in its first year, numerous redheads in schools were kicked and punched by their classmates, and the perpetrators proudly declared their acts on the group page. We love to celebrate the positivity of Kiss a Ginger Day, so join us in celebrations! Yesterday, How to be a Redhead celebrated 11 years since its launch on 1.11.11! Our mega sitewide 25% off sale ends at midnight. Happy Halloween weekend and welcome to Season 4 of the How to be a Redhead podcast! While many are piling on makeup to enhance their costumes, we're talking about skin minimalism on the first episode of the season. Skin minimalism is the practice of using 1-3 products (only) for your skin routine. Most redheads have very sensitive skin and it can be overwhelming to pick the essential items for our skin type. We're talking with Leslie Iddison, the co-founder of Orora Skin Science. Leslie is a beauty aficionado with nearly two decades of experience in luxury beauty brands and a deep source of industry knowledge. Naturally, her lifelong passion for skincare brought her next project to light -- co-founding Orora Skin Science. As a beauty expert, Leslie identified an opportunity to democratize innovative skincare, making the cutting-edge science of beauty accessible. If you're a Deluxe H2BAR Box subscriber, you're enjoying the Orora Skin Science Bioactive Collagen Serum ($84 value). Use code: BOO to get 20% off site-wide. Ends 11/1/2021 at 11:59PM ET.We talk about how the Bioactive Collagen Serum has transformed our redhead skin, and Adrienne discusses how it has helped her acne considerably. We ask Leslie the following questions:1.Let's talk about the “skin minimalism” trend! Why are consumers leaning towards this more? 2.As a skincare expert + co-founder of the Orora skincare founder, how can you tell if you're using too many products? 3.It's so important to know exactly what we are putting on our skin, especially those redheads who have extremely sensitive skin. Without getting too science-y (ha!), can you talk about a few important ingredients every redhead should have in their skincare routine?4.At the same time, can you talk more about Orora too? There is so much confusion out there on how to properly apply your skin products. What is the correct order? 5.What are your top tips for changing up your skincare routine this fall/winter? Is this important and how can it be done effectively at home? Want to help us spread the news about the How to be a Redhead brand and this podcast? This is an urgent podcast episode! Last week, an independent lab, Valisure Labs, announced it discovered potentially harmful levels of benzene, a known carcinogen, in several popular sunscreen products. Now, Valisure Labs is calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall the affected batches. In a report released May 24, they analyzed 294 batches of sunscreen and after-sun products from 69 brands. Benzene was detected in 78 (over a quarter) of those batches—and 14 of them contained more than the FDA's limit of 2 parts per million (ppm). Neutrogena, Sun Bum, CVS Health, and Fruit of the Earth were among the brands with the highest levels of the carcinogen, per the lab's results. WHAT DO WE DO NOW? Dr. Erum Ilyas is here to answer any/all questions for redheads + everyone else listening! Her focus is on adult and pediatric medical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, and skin cancer prevention and treatment. She has practiced dermatology in the Philadelphia/Boston areas for over 15 years and has served as Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Drexel University College of Medicine and the System Chief for Dermatology of the Main Line Health Hospital Systems. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, Fellow of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, member of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology, and Philadelphia Dermatological Society. Dr. Ilyas has served with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgeons as a State Advocacy Leader. She has visited Capitol Hill with the AAD to advocate for restrictions on tanning bed usage for pediatric patients, increased research funding for rare diseases and increased access to pharmaceuticals at affordable prices for patients. She recently worked with local state leaders to successfully push for legislation permitting students in the state of Pennsylvania to apply sunscreen in school without a doctor's note. Dr. Ilyas is the founder of AmberNoon, a contemporary UPF clothing line that protects skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. She designs a diffusion line for QVC, AmberNoon II by Dr Erum Ilyas, for which she also serves as the spokesperson. Dr. Ilyas lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and three teenage children. She answers the following important questions: Valisure, a lab and online pharmacy that regularly tests consumer products, explains it analyzed 294 batches of sunscreen and after-sun products from 69 brands. Benzene was detected in 78 (over a quarter) of those batches—and 14 of them contained more than the FDA's limit of 2 parts per million (ppm). What does the report mean exactly? Should we be worried? As a skincare professional yourself who has really dedicated her life to sun protection, did this news surprise you? What are your top 1 or 2 recommended sunscreens? So many people do not want to talk about skin cancer. But, it's real and it's serious. Redheads are said to have melanoma more than any hair color because of the MC1R gene -- even without exposure to the sun. What do you know about these facts? So many of us are now worried about sunscreen being harmful too. But, wearing sunscreen is always essential. What tips do you have for redheads who are now scared to wear sunscreen? We love UPF clothing! Can you tell us about your contemporary clothing line that protects skin from harmful rays, AmberNoon? There is so much misinformation on the web! Do redheads feel more pain or less pain? The answer is: redheads feel less pain and the reason why is fascinating. The brilliant Dr. David E. Fisher MD, PhD. is our special guest for this episode. Dr. Fisher is an internationally known researcher, clinician and academic, who is Chief of the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). He also serves as Director of the MGH Cutaneous (Q-taneous) Biology Research Center and Director of the Melanoma Center at MGH. A Professor of Dermatology and of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Fisher came to the MGH from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where he previously Directed the Melanoma Program. Dr. Fisher's research has focused on understanding the molecular and genetic events which underlie formation of melanoma as well as skin pigmentation. As a clinician, he has worked to translate these understandings into advances in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases related to the skin and associated disorders. A graduate of Swarthmore College with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, Dr. Fisher is also an accomplished concert cellist and received a degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He received his PhD under Nobel Laureate Gunter Blobel at Rockefeller University and his Medical Degree at Cornell University Medical College under Dr. Henry Kunkel. Dr. Fisher's specialty training in Medicine, Pediatrics, and Oncology were carried out at Harvard Medical School. He recently served for three years as President of the Society for Melanoma Research, the largest international society dedicated to the study of melanoma. New research led by investigators Dr. Fisher at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) provides insights on why people with red hair exhibit altered sensitivity to certain kinds of pain. He will answer the following questions: 1. There has been confusion amongst social media. We want to get to the bottom of it. In very simple terms, can you break down what you do, what you focus on and the new research that you came out with surrounding the MC1R gene? We want to know if redheads feel more or less pain! 2. Redhead mice have the MC1R gene -- is that true? 3. What should redheads in general take away from this study? Will pain management be different or should be different? 4. How about the MC1R gene in conjunction with melanoma? READ MORE! We're big fans of NBC's "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist". The main character/redhead is Zoey Clarke (played by actress Jane Levy). The show is centered around the ability Zoey has to hear people's thoughts in song. Her redhead character is stubborn, determined, and loving. She's also gorgeous and her makeup is always on-point! On and off stage, Natalie Cosco is the woman behind Jane Levy's redhead makeup looks. Natalie is an accomplished makeup artist in both film, print and TV. Her career spans 30 years of achievements including iconic productions as: "Smallville", "Fear the Walking Dead" - Season 1, "The Mountain Between Us", "The Edge of Seventeen", "30 Days of Night (Dark Days)", "The Man in The High Castle" and "The Art of Racing in The Rain." We are so excited to ask Natalie the following questions and for you to hear her answers/tricks/techniques: 1. Let’s talk about redhead makeup! Besides your current work on "Zoeys Extraordinary Playlist", we know you worked on so many films and TV shows throughout your career. What do you love about working on a redhead? Are there any special products, shades etc. that you use when working on a redhead? 2. We LOVED the look you did on Jane Levy at the Golden Globes this year. For those who didn’t see it (and we’ll post it on HowtobeaRedhead.com), Jane Levy was wearing a navy blue dress. She had on a colorful lip, a smokey eye and great brows. We’ll break down those choices in a minute. But, the difference with this look is that the 2021 Golden Globes was virtual! Did the virtual nature of the show play a part in Jane’s makeup look? Should you do your makeup differently when on Zoom? If so, how? 3. Her smokey cat eye was gorgeous! What products do you recommend for achieving this look? 4. How about her lip color? We love a pink shade for the spring and summer months ahead and know a lot of redheads may be afraid to rock a bold lip with their red hair already making a statement. 5. As a makeup artist, what is your go-to makeup product? 6. What is your favorite concealer and how should you prep your under eye area before applying this product? And, how do you deal with creases in the concealer? Redheads are prone to melanoma more than any other hair color. Sunscreen knowledge is so essential and if you've listened to our podcast (or read HowtobeaRedhead.com for the last decade), you know we're passionate about skincare for redheads. The month of May is the beginning of Melanoma Awareness Month and we're kicking it off with a very special Saturday episode! Our guest is Evelynn Moz from VERTRA Premium Suncare. She is the Product Line Manager and passionate about sunscreen. It's scary because a recent study found that many of the American sunscreen products labeled as “broad spectrum” block UVB rays but don’t block UVA rays. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB. Vertra is committed to creating a premium sunscreen line that is infused with non-nano, mineral UVA/UVB blockers that meet the maximum 80-minute FDA water and sweat resistance ratings. They’re also paraben-free and great for redhead skin. *Hint, Hint*: The May H2BAR Box ships today and VERTRA is one of the sunscreen brands inside! Subscribe: www.h2barbox.com For over a decade now Vertra has provided the ocean’s best athletes with superior UV protection with a patented processes. Vertra is now considered the ultimate skincare for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. We talk with Evelynn about her work with Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Kate Somerville and now VERTRA. As an athlete herself, she was a competitive soccer player in her teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe, so she knows how bad sunburns can be. We discuss about the following: 1. Let’s talk about VERTRA! Tell us a bit about the brand? Why was it created? 2. Although the brand has roots in the professional surf industry, the products that Vertra makes can be used not only for any sport, but also for daily wear. Vertra is so beneficial for young athletes, so that they are better protected and more knowledgeable than the generations that came before us. We heard you were a competitive soccer player in your teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe! 3. We’re so excited to have your Pearl White Sticks 50+ a part of our May H2BAR Box. It’s an amazing product. Why is this product so unique? 4. Why is reef-safe important? 5. Not a lot of consumers know the difference between all the ingredients in sunscreen. Why is Octinoxate & Oxybenzone harmful? 6. We know the VERTRA products are 80 minute water-resistant. What does that exactly mean? 7. What are some tips for after-sun care? Want to help us spread the news about the How to be a Redhead brand and this podcast? On February 5th, we launched Finally Have Brows®! Over the past few years, we have been working behind the scenes to develop an eyebrow gel for redheads. We had a hard task at hand. We wanted all redheads to be able to use the same shade, we needed it to be paraben-free/cruelty-free/vegan, made in the USA, sleek packaging, custom brush for coarse brow hair (a trait amongst most redheads).. and so much more. We talk about how we developed Finally Have Brows®, the reaction when it dropped on February 5, 2021 and the reaction of redheads everywhere after the release! Shop + read the rave reviews: https://shop.howtobearedhead.com/products/finally-have-brows-tinted-redhead-eyebrow-gel Exclusive in the podcast notes, we wanted to showcase some of our favorite reviews: This eyebrow gel is AH-MAZING!!! I am in love with the natural effect and how very little product I need to use. Please don’t ever stop making it. I am a natural redhead with (used to be) darker brows, that have faded as I’ve aged. The tint of this brow gel is the only thing that’s ever looked even close to natural for me. And the order I placed today is for my niece who has the blonde-barely-there brows and it looks amazing on her too (bc of course we tried mine on her first!) Thank you so much for catering to the needs of a a desperately underserved group of peeps - all of us gingers! - Audie K. I love this product so much that I bought a second one so I have a back up in case I can't get this again anytime soon. -Amy M. I absolutely love it! I’ve never tried any brow products that was so easily matched to my red hair. I love it and I recommend it to any redhead or anyone who wants natural looking red hair eye brows.

Those with natural red hair have thinner skin than people with darker hair. Redheads are prone to what doctors call “couperose skin.” Couperose skin is defined as visibly dilated capillaries; these capillaries are most likely to show up around the nose and cheek area and can look and feel similar to rosacea. Because a redhead’s skin is thinner, you might even feel like you bruise more too. Characteristics of this skin type: 1. Capillaries can be seen on the cheeks and nose. 2. Red patches on the face, neck and décolleté. 3. Uneven and blotchy skin tone. 4. Sensitive skin prone to irritations. 5. Skin is dry and feels tight. We’re excited to talk with No B.S. Skin Care CEO, Diana Briceno, because she can speak to the importance of caring for the largest organ on our bodies, especially for those who are more likely to be impacted, like redheads. She founded No B.S. for every type of skin tone as a "no b.s." solution, natural and cruelty-free -- it's revolutionizing skincare with clean formulas, real results, and radically honest beauty culture. We ask her the following questions: 1. We feel like all redheads need "No B.S." in their skincare routine. Redheads suffer from so many breakouts and irritations. The topic for this podcast is all about couperose skin. For those of us who have extremely sensitive skin, what should we know about caring for it? 2. In an industry full of miracle-in-a-bottle marketing, No B.S. Skin Care is revolutionizing skincare with clean formulas, real results, and a radically honest beauty culture. How did this come about? Did you see LOTS of B.S. in products and were sick of it? 3. On the LiveNoBS.com website, we saw that the FDA banned 11 toxic and harmful ingredients from skincare. And No B.S. banned 1,500. Wow! Can these toxic ingredients be causing those with couperose skin to have these common irritations? Tell us more about this. 4. Do products with no B.S. work? So many products like retinols or “miracle working” items are full of chemicals. We heard some scientists say that the chemical is what makes them work. We also see No B.S. has a natural retinol. What do you say to those who say chemicals + all the B.S. make for good skin? 5. What is 1 product every person with sensitive skin needs? Gua sha is a natural therapy that involves scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation. This ancient Chinese healing technique may offer a unique approach to better health, addressing issues like chronic pain*. In gua sha, a technician scrapes your skin with short or long strokes to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow. They make these strokes with a smooth-edged instrument known as a gua massage tool. The technician applies massage oil to your skin, and then uses the tool to repeatedly scrape your skin. With redheads being so sensitive, is gua sha a recommended practice? We couldn't think of a better guest than Sandra Lanshin Chiu, LAc. We were first introduced to her via her viral YouTube video "Learn Facial Gua Sha from a Chinese Medical Skincare Professional" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc12OTFzua0). It has been viewed over 1.5 million times! We're so excited to welcome her to the How to be a Redhead podcast. Sandra is an acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist and founder of Treatment by Lanshin. In practice for over a decade, she focuses on treating skin disorders and rejuvenating skin using the unique approach of Chinese medicine, which she believes will transform the future of skincare. Specially trained in herbal dermatology, she uses Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture to resolve common skin problems like acne, rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis. In recent years her work with skin and facial rejuvenation has also received increasing interest and media attention. Through her initial success in treating pain conditions, infertility, digestive disorders, etc., Sandra observed her work also had a powerful impact on restoring skin quality and youthfulness in her patients. Today she applies the successful techniques she has learned and developed into her signature style of anti-aging work. We ask her the following questions: 1. We love your YouTube videos! After applying your gua sha techniques to our skin care routine, we saw a real difference in our redhead skin. What are its benefits? 2. Who is a good candidate for gua aha? Can this technique help those experiencing rosacea and redness? 3. Let's talk about the gua sha tool, specifically your gua sha tool on Lanshin.com. Is the texture of the tool on purpose? The shape? 4. When should we practice gua sha? 5. How do you prep your skin for gua aha? Do you recommend certain skincare products to complement gua sha? 6. What about acne prone skin? Can a redhead with acne use gua aha on their skin? Good for all skin types? 7. How is gua aha different than jade rolling? 8. What are some key parts to your daily wellness routine? 9. What is your #1 skin tip for redheads? 10. You have highly demanded classes that have expanded to the general public. When can we go?! 11. Can you have botox and do gua sha? The backbone of HowtobeaRedhead.com is our 'Redhead Friendly' approval process. It's what inspired the launch of the H2BAR Box, the "How to be a Redhead" book and the redhead beauty events. All products + services recommended by us has been meticulously tested by a redhead + if it passes all of the testing, it is deemed 'Redhead Friendly Approved'. We have heard so much about the HydraFacial Treatment. It's defined as a medical-grade hydradermabrasion device that carries out a patented three-part regimen — cleansing, exfoliating, and then infusing skin with intensive serums. It is known to be a gentler facial + vacuums out pores while simultaneously pushing in potent actives, which moisturize, brighten, plump, and protect. The machine's handpiece holds patented spiralized treatment tips equipped with "vortex technology" — the whirling force that both giveth and taketh away. Is the HydraFacial Treatment 'Redhead Friendly'? Before we test it ourselves, we want our listeners to know the process we take to approve products. We thoroughly research + always contact companies with questions. We talk with Clara Hughes, a licensed esthetician and Training and Education Manager at The HydraFacial Company. Clara has been with The HydraFacial company for over seven years and continues to lead promotional events, assist in sales and marketing for both national and international trade shows, promotional media segments and training programs. Here are some of the questions we ask her: 1. We read that the HydraFacial is one of the most popular in-office facial treatments right now. It is so popular that one is performed every 15 seconds around the world. What exactly is the HydraFacial and how is it different from an actual facial? 2. Redheads are known to have sensitive skin and suffer from redness and rosacea. Who is a good candidate for a HydraFacial? 3. How long does the procedure take? Any side effects? 4. Can you go in the sun after? Do you recommend sunscreen after the treatment? 5. How often should you get a HydraFacial? 6. HydraFacial’s newest scalp procedure, Keravive, is designed to cleanse, stimulate, nourish, and hydrate the scalp for fuller and healthier-looking hair. Redheads really suffer from itchy scalps. Can you walk us through this technique? It sounds so interesting! We also talk in detail about Julianne Moore's skin routine. Redheads are said to make their own Vitamin D and because of this are said to need less Vitamin D than blondes/brunettes. Can we say hashtag #Superpower? Is this true and what should we know about Vitamin D and its connection with redheads? Studies have suggested that redheads are most efficient at synthesizing D, which is crucial for bone health and is thought to protect against depression. Scottish experts have speculated that this ability gives redheads a genetic advantage in gloomy climates because they can churn out more D in low-light conditions than people with darker skin or hair. This is all thanks to the MC1R gene mutation. The reason we talk about this today is because of a recent routine checkup Adrienne had. She gave blood for her annual checkup and found out she was “dangerously low” on Vitamin D. Reference Range was
Elyse Dehlbom was a fan favorite on the 23rd season of ABC’s "The Bachelor". Refinery 29 wrote, “But one contestant [speaking of Elyse] on Colton Underwood's season stood out simply because of her hair color. Sigh. Redheads are (oddly) rare on the show.” She grew up outside of Anchorage in Alaska, where she spent her childhood outdoors. She found a warmer climate when she relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona - where she now works as a makeup artist. Elyse also owns GlamourGasp.com which gives one-on-one makeup lessons online. Redhead makeup tips, conversations about "The Bachelor" and how it was growing up as a redhead in Alaska... this is a super fun episode! Stephanie talks about an unexpected challenge that came her way and how she handled the situation. At age 30, she was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer & at the same time experienced a miscarriage. It took time, lots of yoga/meditation and family/friends to get her to her current place of gratitude and thanks. Many of you were wondering when Season 3 of the H2BAR podcast was kicking off and this is why we decided to delay the season until now. Stephanie speaks candidly about her experience and what it taught her about life and the future. If you wish to e-mail her, as she suggests at the end of the episode, the best email is: info@HowtobeaRedhead.com. We, Adrienne and Stephanie, have curly red hair and discovered that embracing our curls was a challenging journey -- a similar feeling when learning to love our unique hair color. Before we launched HowtobeaRedhead.com, we were fans (and still are!) of NaturallyCurly.com, a website for curly hair. That's why we're excited to talk to co-founder of NaturallyCurly.com, Michelle Breyer. She helped create the leading community and resource for people with curly hair. Frustrated by the lack of information on curly hair and the limited products available in the marketplace, her and her business partner, Gretchen Heber, launched the site in 1998. Michelle answers the following questions: 1. Let’s talk about your hair journey! What was it like growing up with curly hair? 2. What have you learned from your journey in building NaturallyCurly? 3. If you could give a redhead with curly hair ONE tip (and one tip only) for the perfect curls, what would it be? 4. What is your current hair regimen? 5. What is your top tip for eliminating frizz? 6. What hair products can you not live without? 7. What advice do you have for those redheads listening who have yet to embrace their curls, or maybe just getting started? PODCAST NOTES: Coming Soon!
Microblading inserts semi-permanent pigment into the upper layers of skin to create the desired fullness and shape of the eyebrows. The effects last up to 12 months after which the pigment fades leaving the skin and your natural brows exactly as they were. The technique is very on-trend right now. But microblading can be difficult for redheads because redheads typically have lighter and coarser brows, and sometimes a semi-permanent color can be way too harsh. BUT, microblading can be done! A redhead needs to find the right professional who has worked on redheads before. Thanks to social media, we came across today's guest, Katie Ellis, on Instagram. One of Ellis' red-haired clients broke down in tears after seeing her new microbladed redhead brows. Ellis is from Fresno, California. She is a registered nurse turned beauty business entrepreneur. She realized after six long years in college and two years of nursing, her true passion is to help women feel beautiful through microblading. Giving her clients confidence through microblading makes her heart soar and leaves her fulfilled every day. She answers the following questions: 1. Who is the best candidate for microblading? 2. Walk us through the process! Post, during and pre-microblading? 3. A redhead sits down to get their brows microbladed. How do you decide on the color of the brows? We’ve read that sometimes the color can change. Have you seen this? 4. Does it hurt? Should a redhead with sensitive skin be concerned about irritation? 5. How many times do they see you: When you get it done, do you have to go back once it heals? How long does it last? How often do you need to get it done? PODCAST NOTES: Coming Soon! The truth is: redheads are super cool, but we already knew that right?! To help understand just how cool we are, you should learn a little more about the history of red hair. That's why we're so excited to talk with Jacky Colliss Harvey. Jacky is the author of "Red: A History of the Redhead" and "My Life As A Redhead: A Journal". She studied English at Cambridge University and art history at the Courtauld Institute. She works in museum publishing and is a commentator and reviewer who speaks on the arts and their relation to popular culture. Her red hair has also found her an alternative career as a life model and a film extra playing everything from a society lady in Atonement to a Parisian whore in Bel-Ami. She splits her time between New York and London. We answers the following super interesting questions: 1. "Red: A History of the Redhead" tells the history of red hair throughout the ages. It traces back 50,000 years and dives into science, religion, feminism and sexuality, literature, and art. The book begins with how the redhead gene made its way out of Africa with the early human diaspora, to its emergence under Northern skies. Fascinating! Tell us a bit more about the book & the fascinating things about redheads! 2. What was the biggest thing you learned about redheads while writing this book? Anything that surprised you? 3. The book dives into contemporary culture when it comes to “gingerism” and the movement against bullying. Do you think we’re moving in the right direction when it comes to anti-bullying against redheads? 4. Do you think redheads are portrayed positively in culture? Is there a difference between redhead men and redhead women being portrayed? If so, why do you think this happens? 5. In the book, you call your red hair, “The single most significant characteristic of your life.” Have you always identified with being a redhead? PODCAST NOTES: COMING SOON!
Microneedling is a procedure that uses fine needles to puncture the skin and create a controlled skin injury in order to rejuvenate the skin. It is used to treat and improve conditions like acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, loose skin, skin texture, pore size, brown spots, stretch marks, and pigment issues. Microneedling, in some form, has been practiced for more than 20 years. It’s also called skin needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT), and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI). Can redheads get this procedure? We talk with Tori Burns, Physician Assistant-Certified at The Center for Aesthetic and Laser Medicine in Tyler, TX. She gives redheads the 101 on microneedling. Redheads have always said they need more anesthesia and experience more pain than blondes/brunettes. But is it an urban legend? No! "Redheads do experience more pain," says Dr. Daniel Sessler. He's a world-renowned researcher and anesthesiologist. He was quoted in the 2009 New York Times article, "Pain of Being a Redhead". He extensively studied redheads and concluded redheads DO experience more pain than most and DO need more anesthesia! This is a must-listen because of the important medical knowledge for all natural redheads! Dr. Sessler attended medical school at Columbia University, and subsequently completed pediatric and anesthesia residencies at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is chair and founder of the Department of Outcomes Research at Cleveland Clinic. Outcomes Research currently coordinates more than a hundred studies, including a dozen large, multi-center outcome trials. His papers have been cited more than 25,000 times. Dr. Sessler is on-air to answer the following questions: 1. You began studying a redhead’s sensitivity to pain after hearing chatter from colleagues. Urban legends say redheads have trouble with needing more anesthesia and are more sensitive to pain, specifically at the dentist. Can you share with our audience about your initial interest in the topic? 2. Your interest in a redhead’s sensitivity to pain led to two studies. What did these studies show? What were your findings? Were you surprised by the outcome? 3. So...Redheads really do require more anesthesia! Wow! How much more? Does it depend on the procedure? 4. Did you hear from a lot of redheads once your findings were released to the public? 5. Can you confirm, from your studies, that redheads needing more anesthesia and experiencing more pain is NOT an urban legend -- it is real? PODCAST NOTES: Coming Soon! For years, beauty and laser specialists have said: “Redheads can’t get laser hair removal because the laser technology can’t pick up blonde/light hair follicles.” Is this true? Founder & Medical Director of WIFH in Atlanta, Dr. Jay Kulkin, MD answers the question. He is a nationally recognized cosmetic laser specialist with more than thirty years of experience, and a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. While Dr. Kulkin is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it is his initial laser training in the late 1980’s that lead to his expertise in cosmetic lasers. As one of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Kulkin has led laser workshops to teach his techniques across the United States and Canada, and frequently serves as an expert on the subject. Dr. Kulkin answers: 1. CAN redheads get laser hair removal? 2. If so, what type of laser hair removal would you recommend for a redhead? 3. We read, “The most common complication from laser hair removal is hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is the temporary darkening of the skin. This can occur in light-skinned patients who have had extended sun exposure resulting in the tanning of the skin.” Can you explain this further? 4. They said redheads experience more pain than most. Is laser painful? PODCAST NOTES: https://howtobearedhead.com/laser-hair-removal-101-for-redheads/

Maria Salandra is a natural redhead, is known in the celebrity circuit as *the* nail artist and since 2013 has been Rihanna’s personal nail artist. Maria's success story is incredibly unique. She wanted a career in music and only started to do nails as a side hustle. But eventually, one of her two career paths started to take off faster than the other. With help from a few friends in the film industry, she landed her first Hollywood film: "Mixed Nuts", starring Steven Martin, Adam Sandler, and Rita Wilson. And then, her big break came along. The Italian nail artist found herself on set for the iconic series "The Sopranos", where she was in charge of the nails for all the principles. These Hollywood jobs led to some incredible redhead clientele like Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts (Julia will always be a redhead in our eyes because of her iconic role in “Pretty Woman”!). Maria has done the nails of the Kardashian-Jenner clan and other celebs like Rachel McAdams, Christina Aguilera, and Jennifer Garner. Salandra never knows what type of project will come her way. It could be making nail designs for 50 models in one of Rihanna's fashion shows or flying to London for a last-minute event. We’re so happy she had time to talk with us about all-stuff redhead and of course, NAILS! Podcast notes: https://howtobearedhead.com/podcast-s2-ep-3-nail-tips-for-redheads-with-guest-maria-salandra/
