With the year drawing to a close, I look back at some of the most impactful conversations I've had over the last year. This episode features some of Australia's sporting greats: former Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown on getting his head right early in his AFL career; then Olympian Elle Armit on the heartbreak of being dropped from representing Australia, and how she built herself back up; and finally - how a $2 raffle ticket changed the course of Mark 'Frosty' Winterbottom's life. Monday, April 21, 2025 -- news sites globally announce the death of Pope Francis at 88. Even though his health has been fragile for months, the news still stuns the world. The news breaks just hours after Francis has given his Easter Sunday blessing and is to become the biggest religious story of 2025.And the funeral becomes a major geo-political event.Soon, inside the Vatican, the politicking for a new Pope begins in earnest...GUESTS:Colm Flynn from the Catholic broadcaster EWTN Claire Giangrave from the Religion News Service Clare Johnson from the Australian Catholic University Noel Debien ABC's senior religion specialist Papal historian Miles Pattenden of Oxford University Sandie Cornish of the Australian Catholic UniversityThis program was made on the lands of the Gadigal People
If the first hundred days of a papacy can shake up the Catholic church, how much drama occurs over 80 years? For journalist Philip Shenon, there has been a constant tension – how much should the church judge the modern world and how much mercy should it extend? Philip's the author of a sweeping new history of the church since World War II. It's called Jesus Wept – Seven Popes and the Battle for The Soul of the Catholic Church. It chronicles the triumphs, controversies, and politics of the popes before Leo. Peter Baines spent years as part of the New South Wales police force investigating some of the state's most horrific crimes and collecting and analysing the forensic evidence to convict the perpetrators. After helping with the recovery and investigation of the Bali bombings in 2002, Peter was tapped to assist when a devastating tsunami struck Thailand on Boxing Day, 2004. In this raw and candid conversation, Peter details the heartbreaking aftermath of major natural disaster, as he and his team were tasked with identifying thousands of bodies left in the tsunami's wake. Saya Sakakibara and her brother Kai grew up competing in BMX racing, starting when her family moved to Japan. When they relocated back to Sydney, the pair quickly rose through the ranks, winning a slew of state and national titles between them. No stranger to accidents while competing, Saya had suffered a number of concussions herself before Kai was involved in a serious accident in 2020. It left him with a life-changing traumatic brain injury, and Saya with a crippling fear of getting back on the bike. In this episode, Saya details the strong bond she and Kai formed through BMX, how her fear of competing grew over the years and how she found a renewed passion and purpose to return to competition, winning Gold at the Paris Olympic Games and becoming World Champion three years running. There's no denying that many modern 'conveniences' are actually making us less resilient, sicker and un happier than ever before. And we've been told for years to avoid stress to help us live better. But in his new book The Hardiness Effect, Dr Paul Taylor says we need to view potential adversity as a challenge, rather than a threat. Instead, we should be embracing stress and using it as fuel to reach our full potential. In this episode, former Royal Navy Officer turned psychophysiologist Dr Paul Taylor outlines some of the ancient wisdom with cutting-edge research that backs The Hardiness Effect, and the steps you can take to embrace challenge, welcome change and boost your physical and mental health. Pope Leo flies east next week on his first overseas visit as pontiff. He goes first to Türkiye, a country where the Christian population has dwindled to less than one per-cent. He'll meet the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholemew, who leads most of the world's Orthodox Christians, and with the controversial president of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan's been styling himself as a new sultan of the broader Islamic world. But it will be the second leg of Leo's trip, to Lebanon, that's potentially more challenging. Christians are around a third of the population but there are real fears that external actors, including Iran and Israel, could destabilise the fragile religious settlement that has survived for more than 30 years. A group linked to the Al Qaeda Islamist network is closing in on the capital of Mali, in north-west Africa. This group, known as JNIM, now controls swathes of territory in the Sahel, a region that stretches across several countries in the Sahara. If JNIM takes the capital, Bamako, it would be the first time an Al Qaeda affiliate has seized power in a country. What would that mean for Africa and the Islamic world? Dr TESSA DEVEREAUX has been analysing the situation. On the fiftieth anniversary of the dismissal of the Whitlam government, you'll hear many theories about Gough Whitlam's downfall. But ROY WILLIAMS has explored one reason that by no means caused but may have contributed to the events of November 11, 1975. Williams is the author of In God They Trust: The Religious Beliefs of Australia's Prime Ministers. He also has a very personal connection. His late father, Evan Williams, was a speechwriter and long-time confidante of Whitlam. Roy wonders if a throwaway insult about the faith of then Queensland premier Joh Bjelke Petersen hardened the resolve of Whitlam's opponents. One of the geopolitical tactics Russia has used in its war with Ukraine has been to divide opinion among the world's Orthodox Christians. Vladimir Putin is not the first Russian leader to style himself as a champion of Orthodox communities but in Greece and the Middle East, he's tried to marshal sympathy among Christians. Just three weeks after leaving dry land, the boat was hit by a massive Antarctic storm. As a massive swell swamped the vessel, the water pumps failed. The Sudur Havid tipped on its side and was unable to recover.
