In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the recent events and activities in the news; specifically, we discussed the recent U.S. administration's decisions around visa interviews for international MBA students. These are, frankly, very disturbing times, which can seriously harm the MBA experience at for all candidates at top MBA programs in the United States. We are hoping that good sense will prevail, in the near future. Graham highlighted an admissions event he is helping to moderate in Paris this upcoming week, which includes ten of the top MBA programs from the United States. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/paristopmba Graham noted three articles that have been recently published on Clear Admit. The first focuses on the costs of applying to Business School, from application fees to test prep, campus visits, and beyond. The second focuses on which top MBA programs allow for test waivers of the GMAT and GRE. This list appears to grow each season. Graham then highlighted a report from Forte which Clear Admit covered, that illustrates significant gender pay gap differentials. Graham highlighted three Real Humans alumni spotlights, alums from UNC / Kenan Flagler working at their own business, Grantease, Rice / Jones working at McKinsey, and Emory / Goizueta working at Morgan Stanley. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a 675 GMAT and 3.5 GPA. They are from China, and we discussed whether they should apply in Round 1 or Round 2, and whether they should retake the GMAT. This week's second MBA candidate has outstanding numbers and is from Africa. We think they are likely to be a very strong candidate but need to work on their story and connect it to their goals. The final MBA candidate is deciding between Columbia and Yale, with a significant scholarship. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the Round 3 activity on LiveWire; interview invites and final decisions continue to roll out for this shortened application round; next week Chicago / Booth and Imperial Business School are scheduled to release final decisions. Graham noted the Clear Admit promotion, where for every new entry we receive on DecisionWire, that maps out a candidate's entire application journey, Clear Admit will donate $10 to the Forte Foundation. Graham highlighted the remainder of Application Overview events series that will be hosted this week on Tuesday (Berkeley / Haas, UVA / Darden, Washington / Foster, UNC / Kenan Flagler, and Georgia Tech / Scheller) and Wednesday (Columbia, Stanford, UPenn / Wharton, Yale SOM, and Texas / Austin). Signups for those events are here: https://bit.ly/appoverview25 Graham also mentioned an event on Thursday for London Business School's One Year MBA program. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/lbs1year Graham noted a deep-dive analysis article on MBA tech career placements for the most recent graduating classes. Not surprisingly, Big Tech placement has dropped off at most top MBA programs. Graham highlighted two Real Humans alumni spotlights, alums from Duke / Fuqua working at EY-Parthenon, and UCLA / Anderson working at Google. Finally, Graham noted the recently recorded podcast featuring the leader of career services at Georgetown / McDonough, talking about the triple jump - changing industries, functions and geographies. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate works in investment banking and is from Ghana. They have a 325 GRE score. This week's second MBA candidate is from Argentina and appears to have a very interesting profile, but their GRE score of 309 is going to be an issue. They plan to retake. We also think they should reconsider their school targeting. The final MBA candidate is deciding between Chicago / Booth and Michigan / Ross, with scholarship. This episode was recorded in Boston, USA and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Graham then highlighted a Real Humans alumni spotlight, an alum from NYU / Stern working at PepsiCo. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three DecisionWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is choosing between Dartmouth / Tuck, Duke / Fuqua, and UVA / Darden. They want to work in consulting on the west coast after business school. This week's second MBA candidate is choosing between Chicago / Booth's EMBA program and Cambridge / Judge's full-time program. They are from Japan and wish to begin a career in the United States. The final MBA candidate is deciding between Cornell / Johnson, Dartmouth / Tuck, and Michigan / Ross. Signups for this event are here: https://bit.ly/mbafair2025 Graham mentioned two recently published articles by Clear Admit that focus on fellowships and community for women targeting business school and a similar piece highlighting support and funding options for minorities at the leading MBA programs. Graham then noted an admissions tip that focuses on choosing between MBA program options, post admissions decisions. Graham also highlighted four Real Humans alumni spotlights, alums from Emory / Goizueta working at Deloitte, Rice / Jones working at Pfizer, Berkeley / Haas working at JP Morgan and UCI / Merage working at Microsoft. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected one ApplyWire entry and two DecisionWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is a military candidate who has a 331 GRE score. Their overall profile looks very strong; we want them to focus a little more on their short-term goal. This week's second MBA candidate is choosing between Arizona / Carey and USC / Marshall. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the new season of MBA admissions; this upcoming week we have many Round 2 application deadlines, including Harvard, Dartmouth / Tuck, UCLA / Anderson, Emory / Goizueta, Georgetown / McDonough, CMU / Tepper, Rice / Jones, Chicago / Booth, Yale SOM, UVA / Darden, UNC / Kenan Flagler, Washington / Foster, Notre Dame / Mendoza, SMU / Cox, Stanford, Northwestern / Kellogg, Johns Hopkins / Carey, Vanderbilt / Owen, Berkeley / Haas, Duke / Fuqua, Cornell / Johnson, USC / Marshall, IESE, Georgia / Terry and Georgia Tech / Scheller. Graham highlighted two admissions tips for those finalizing their admissions essays; these essay tips focus on word limits and the optional essay. Graham then discussed a Real Humans post focused on holiday celebrations. Graham then presented the Class of 2024 career placement reports from Columbia, Northwestern / Kellogg and UPenn / Wharton. This finalizes our reviews of the M7 career reports, and we are seeing the outcomes of a tougher placement market for these top programs. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is only applying to two programs, Duke / Fuqua and UVA / Darden. They did apply last season to some different programs, and we worry that they may be challenged by applying in Round 2 this season. This week's second MBA candidate was a NCAA Div 1 athlete with an outstanding GPA. They now work in their family business, focused on sports. While their GMAT is not outstanding, we wonder if they should target a few programs from a higher tier. The final MBA candidate is deciding between Washington / Foster, with $66k scholarship and Vanderbilt / Owen with $100k scholarship. They want to pursue a career in consulting or technology. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the activity on MBA LiveWire; several top MBA programs will be releasing their Round 1 decisions this week, including Harvard, UPenn / Wharton, Northwestern / Kellogg, MIT / Sloan, Dartmouth / Tuck, Berkeley / Haas, UVA / Darden, Duke / Fuqua, UCLA / Anderson, Georgetown / McDonough, UNC / Kenan Flagler, Notre Dame / Mendoza, Vanderbilt / Owen, Rice / Jones, Johns Hopkins / Carey and Arizona / Carey. Washington / Olin is releasing Round 2 decisions and Oxford / Said is releasing Stage 3 decisions. Graham noted a recently published story on Clear Admit that focuses on four students at Dartmouth / Tuck who are focused on healthcare. Graham then highlighted two admissions tips, the first tip focuses on how to reflect on negative admissions results, and the second explores the role of the video essay in the admissions process. We then discussed two Real Humans stories, focused on MBA students at UC Irvine / Merage and Berkeley / Haas. Graham then presented the second career placement report of the season, from NYU / Stern. While overall, the placement statistics are in line with last season, one potentially troubling statistic is the lower percentage of students reporting accepting a job, three months from graduation. This is a stat we will be looking at closely for subsequent career reports. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a really interesting profile, which includes doing NGO work in conflict zones. We believe this is the type of candidate that top MBA programs really aspire to enroll. Their GPA is going to be slightly lower than the median for top MBA programs, but they have completed a masters degree and a calculus course, which helps compensate. This week's second MBA candidate is planning a second round strategy, based on the results from their Round 1 programs. They have received a few interview invites and are now considering whether to aim higher, or go with more safety programs. The final MBA candidate is from Africa, has five years of work experience and a very decent GPA. But their GRE score is very low; we really hope they are able to prepare more and retake the test. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the activity on MBA LiveWire; Columbia released Round 1 interview invites last week, and several other top MBA programs continue to roll out interview invite decisions. Round 1 application deadlines for this upcoming week include Rice / Jones, The Consortium, Texas / McCombs, Arizona / Carey, Boston / Carroll, Indiana / Kelley and Notre Dame / Mendoza. NYU / Stern has its Round 2 deadline this week. Imperial College is scheduled to release interview invites for its Round 1 candidates and Duke / Fuqua is scheduled to release its final decisions for its Early Action candidates. Graham then highlighted a recently published admissions tip focused on the five MBA interview questions you need to ace. These are the most common MBA interview questions that most top MBA programs will be asking.  Graham then noted three Real Humans stories, focused on MBA students at UNC / Kenan Flagler, IMD and Indiana / Kelley. We then discussed three recently published class profiles, from Berkeley / Haas, Stanford and Washington / Olin. All these class profiles look very good. It is interesting to note that Stanford's median GRE score is the same as the median GRE score at Washington / Olin. We discussed why this may be the case.  Haas's stats appear to be impressive for a program that sits just outside the leading M7 MBA programs, much like NYU / Stern's stats that we covered last week. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from Africa and has a GRE of 332. They also have a graduate degree. They appear to have very solid work experience and are active outside of work. They are targeting Sloan in Round 1, and then additional programs in Round 2. This week's second MBA candidate is from the US military and has a very strong GMAT of 715. We do worry about their 2.9 GPA, for which they did provide some mitigating circumstances. They also have a high GPA in their graduate degree which may help. The final MBA candidate for this week has six years of consulting experience and is also active in their community. They have a GRE score of 294, which may really harm their options. They plan to retake the test and apply in Round 2. They might also consider undertaking some additional coursework. Graham then noted three Real Humans stories, focused on MBA students at CMU / Tepper, Duke / Fuqua and Ohio State / Fisher. We then discussed three recently published class profiles, from NYU / Stern, Chicago / Booth and UPenn / Wharton. Like prior profiles for this season, application volumes were up, and the profile of the incoming classes remains strong. Stern's stats are especially impressive for a program that sits just outside the leading M7 MBA programs. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from Africa and appears to have an outstanding profile. They have a GPA of 3.88 and a GRE score of 329. They are also a first-generation college graduate with a solid finance experience. This week's second MBA candidate has built their career around affordable housing. That is their long-term goal and they were once homeless. They also have strong numbers, including a 330 GRE score. The final MBA candidate for this week is from India and works in tech-related sales. They are targeting Round 2, which might not be ideal. They are also considering retaking the GRE, their current score is 318. A higher score will certainly help their overall profile. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. We then discussed two recently published class profiles. Both Michigan / Ross and Cornell / Johnson reported strong profiles for their incoming classes, following the early trend we are seeing for this season's new MBA candidates. Finally, Graham noted a recently published podcast he hosted with UNC / Kenan Flagler, which focuses on their renowned Investment Management program. One of the student co-hosts on the podcast used to be a Wire Taps listener when they were applying to top MBA programs! For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from Southern Europe and has worked extensively in the hospitality sector. They have a strong undergraduate GPA, but their GRE is 319. They are taking MBA Math. This week's second MBA candidate has a very strong focus on technology in the energy sector. They have a PhD and a GMAT score of 750. They also have 10 years of experience. They have a very specific goal focus, but we wonder if they need to broaden their list of target programs. The final MBA candidate for this week is planning to use the MBA to transition to their family business, to create a tech-focused vertical. They also have significant work experience of nine years, and they have a decent GRE score of 327. Their GPA is likely their weakest element, at 3.12. We are great admirers of the talent, dedication and perseverance it takes to compete at the very top of any endeavor. Graham then noted two admissions tips that were recently published by Clear Admit. The first tip focuses on the importance of understanding the background of the admissions readers. The second tip discusses the need to do deep research on each of the MBA programs that a candidate is targeting. Graham then mentioned six recently published Adcom Q&As, from HEC Paris, Imperial College, UNC / Kenan Flagler, Washington / Olin, Northwestern / Kellogg, and UCLA / Anderson. We then highlighted a new MBA admissions series that focuses on “famous” MBA alumni, which we think highlights the real value of the MBA from top tier MBA programs. This series will focus on MBA alumni in a variety of sectors including technology, health care and retail, finance and philanthropy, and automotive and energy. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from South Africa and appears to have had a very strong career to date in finance roles in the tech sector. Their GMAT is a 730 and they are targeting the M7 MBA programs. This week's second MBA candidate works in academia as a researcher in the health care domain. They want to transition out of academia, their long-term goal is to work for an organization like the Gates Foundation. They have a GRE score of 330. The final MBA candidate for this week is from Ghana. They have a GRE score of 312, but plan to retake the test. Graham then mentioned a unique full tuition scholarship offered by HEC Paris. Graham then shared tidbits from four recently published Adcom Q&As, from Columbia, CMU / Tepper, Washington / Foster and Florida / Warrington. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries. This week's first MBA admissions candidate is a military candidate who has worked in cyber warfare, and has a masters degree in computer science. They are looking to use the MBA to transition into the finance sector and investment banking. This week's second MBA candidate is also from the military, and is applying for their MBA after also considering going to law school. They also have a super GRE of 333, and very interesting experiences in the military in special operations. The final MBA candidate for this week is originally from Tajikistan, and she's worked and been educated in several countries including Russia and Germany. They also have decent numbers, and may well be a strong MBA candidate. This week's second MBA candidate is from India, and appears to have an impressive professional background, evolving from accountancy to product management in tech, with a focus on social impact. They should target the first rounds. The final MBA candidate for this week is deciding between NYU / Stern, to which they have already paid a deposit, and Columbia, where they have only recently been admitted. In the long run, they want to be on the west coast. This episode was recorded in Chicago, Illinois and Cornwall, England. As usual, this week's MBA Admissions podcast kicks off with a discussion of all the latest MBA application deadline and decision release news for this season. Last week, MIT / Sloan released its Round 2 final decisions. Cornell / Johnson also released some of their final decisions. This week Round 3 continues with several application deadlines. Graham promoted the MBA applicant survey we now have in the field. We are trying to encourage as high a response rate as we can get. The survey is at https://www.bit.ly/caspringsurvey Graham also noted the May 15th event we are hosting in Chicago, which will be Clear Admit's first in-person MBA candidate event. Signups are here: https://www.bit.ly/cachicagofair Graham highlighted two recently published admissions tips focused on how candidates should decide between different MBA program offers, and how to get the most out of the admitted students events that many top MBA programs offer in the month of April. These events are very important to attend for two broad reasons: to help candidates make their final decisions, as well as to begin the process of transitioning to the new MBA adventure. Graham then noted three Real Humans Alumni pieces, alums from London Business School working at Uber, Maryland / Smith working at Merck, and UPenn / Wharton working at General Mills. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry. This week's first MBA admissions candidate applied to London Business School this season, but was rejected after the interview phase. They have a 319 GRE score and a 3.1 GPA. While they appear to have a strong professional background, we are encouraging them to retake the GRE, ahead of next season. This week's second MBA candidate also has a 3.1 GPA, but there GMAT is a little better, at 710. They also have a very decent professional background, as well as very interesting extra-curricular activities and interests. Their target is Duke / Fuqua's early action round. We think there is a strong potential benefit from retaking the GMAT, if they can gain 20-30 points. The final MBA candidate for this week is deciding between UCLA / Anderson with some scholarship and UNC / Kenan Flagler with a full scholarship. We think the decision really boils down to where they want to be, geographically, post MBA. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the wave of Round 2 MBA application decisions that are forthcoming. Interview invites are now dwindling for Round 2 as we approach the end of Round 2. Georgetown / McDonough, IESE, Emory / Goizueta, Chicago / Booth, Berkeley / Haas, Texas / McCombs, UCLA / Anderson and INSEAD are releasing their final Round 2 decisions this week. Graham highlighted two recently published admissions tips focused on Round 2 waitlists, and financing the MBA. The latter was written by Juno, which operates a platform to group admitted MBA candidates and source low interest rate student loans. Graham then noted four Real Humans Alumni pieces: alums from California Irvine / Merage working at Johnson & Johnson, Notre Dame / Mendoza working at Amazon, Rice / Jones working at Goldman Sachs and Duke / Fuqua working at Kearney. Finally, Graham highlighted a recently published piece on INSEAD, which had a focus on International Women's Day. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry. This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a very interesting profile having graduated from FIT, with a strong GPA; she is also a first-generation college graduate and has seven years of experience. We are very concerned with her lower GRE score of 304. Any increase in that score should have a very positive impact on MBA options. This week's second MBA candidate has a very good academic profile, along with a 326 GRE. They are very focused on the education sector, with a long term goal of starting their own school. We really like the profile, and wonder if they should also add Harvard and Stanford to their list of target programs. The final MBA candidate for this week has several offers from top-30 programs, with significant scholarships. They are also on the waitlist for UNC / Kenan Flagler. They only have two years of experience and are considering whether to attend next season, or to wait and reapply. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the MBA application deadlines and interview releases for this season. Interview invites continue for some top MBA programs, but we are getting towards the end of the cycle and closer to Round 2 decisions. UV / Darden, Michigan / Ross, Duke / Fuqua, UNC / Kenan Flagler, and Dartmouth / Tuck are releasing their final Round 2 decisions next week. Graham highlighted a recently published admissions tip focused on the background check process for admitted candidates. He then noted three Real Humans Alumni pieces, alums from Rochester / Simon, working at Google, Texas / McCombs working at Bain, and Emory / Goizueta working at Microsoft. Finally, Graham highlighted a Friday's from the Frontline story that focused on Michigan / Ross's hosting the Climate CAP MBA summit. This led to a short discussion on the increasing interest, among top MBA programs, for issues related to climate transformation. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry. This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a super GRE of 340, but unfortunately has a poor academic record, due to the onset of depression. They now have six years of work experience in the oil and gas sector. We think they will have a few challenges to mitigate the undergraduate record, but it is doable. This week's second MBA candidate has an education background and has served as a teacher, with  a special interest in climate change. They want to pursue the MBA to transition into the business of sustainability. They still need to take the GMAT or GRE, and we think that doing very well on the test will be very important. The final MBA candidate for this week is deciding between London Business School and Columbia Business School. They are from China and want to work in consulting in the Middle East. They already have an engineering degree from Columbia, and Columbia has offered them a significant scholarship. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing interview invite news out of Harvard and Duke.  As we get further into the R2 cycle, we are now starting to see more invites for candidates, specifically for aforementioned programs like Harvard and Duke, but also for the likes of Chicago / Booth, Yale SOM, Dartmouth / Tuck, UVA / Darden and Northwestern / Kellogg. This upcoming week, London Business School will release its Round 2 interview invites. Clear Admit is hosting is its monthly Clear Admit+ webinar later today, Monday, February 5. Alex and Graham will take all questions related to MBA admissions. A big focus of the event will be on MBA interview preparation.  On Wednesday, February 7 (and again February 14), Clear Admit is hosting events for deferred admissions candidates, with several leading MBA programs; signups are here: https://bit.y/defeb24 On Thursday, February 8,  Clear Admit is hosting an AMA with UC / Irvine. More details on our website. Graham highlighted Real Humans pieces for Maryland / Smith and ESCP that were recently published on Clear Admit. We then discussed a Fridays from the Frontline feature on a student at Duke / Fuqua, who is pivoting from digital marketing to brand management. Because we have moved into interview season, we are seeing more interview tips being published on Clear Admit; last week the focus was on interview etiquette. Graham then highlighted a recently recorded podcast episode with Georgetown / McDonough that focused on leadership...stay tuned for details! For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is an army veteran, with a legal background. They have really good numbers, too. Because they have worked for 10 years, we think they need to focus on fit, as well as articulate a firmer long-term goal. This week's second MBA candidate has a really interesting background in the performing arts. Their numbers are very decent, although the quant section of their GRE might raise a concern. Doing some additional course work, like GMAC's Business Fundamentals, might well serve them well. The final MBA candidate for this week has offers from NYU / Stern and UNC Kenan Flagler with a considerable scholarship at the latter. Because of their personal circumstances, we think that Kenan Flagler may be the better option, but it's clearly a tough call. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. Graham highlighted two Real Humans pieces from Clear Admit, focused on IESE and Vanderbilt / Owen. We then discussed the recently published MBA class of 2025 profile from Columbia, and three employment reports, from Harvard, Stanford and Dartmouth / Tuck. The profile of recruiters at Harvard and Stanford is different from other “M7” programs, with more focus on buy-side financial services, and less focus on consulting. Graham also highlighted an Adcom Q&A from Yale SOM, as well as a topical admissions tip that was published last week: how to handle rejections from top MBA programs. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries. This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a very interesting profile, and it appears that she also has really strong leadership experiences. She applied in Round 1, and has received interview invites. Her one clear weakness is a 305 GRE score. This week's second MBA candidate has some pretty amazing entrepreneurial experience from West Africa; they helped start a budget airline. They still need to take the GMAT, which is a potential concern. They are targeting some of the more unique programs like Stanford's one year MSx program, and the Sloan Fellows Program at MIT. The final MBA candidate for this week is an engineer who is targeting next season for their MBA applications. Their combination of a 690 GMAT (with a relatively low quant score) and 3.0 GPA is a little concerning. We are hoping they are able to boost the GMAT, even if only a little. While a few interview invites remain, and a few candidates are still interviewing, we are moving to the oft-challenging stage of waiting for decision releases. This waiting period does create considerable anxiety for MBA candidates. Graham highlighted the upcoming MBA admissions event on November 30, where seven of the world's leading MBA programs will share tips on how to optimize their MBA admissions opportunities. Signups for the event are here: https://bit.ly/catoptips Clear Admit is also hosting two events for Masters in Management programs, on November 29 and December 6. Schools participating in that event include Chicago / Booth, Michigan / Ross, CMU / Tepper, Northwestern / Kellogg, Georgetown / McDonough and Notre Dame / Mendoza. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/clearadmitmim Graham then highlighted two articles that Clear Admit published for its Sustainability series, from Chicago / Booth and Cornell / Johnson. He then noted a Real Humans article from UNC / Kenan Flagler, which led to a story about how the MBA student challenged their fear of heights. We then discussed an Admissions Tip: knowing your audience, which details the importance of understanding the admissions officers who will be reviewing the applications. Finally, Graham previewed a recently recorded podcast that he conducted with Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT), and two students who successfully used the service and attended Stanford GSB and Columbia Business School.  Stay tuned for more on this... For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries: The first MBA admissions candidate is targeting next season for their applications. They have a 700 GMAT and 3.3 GPA. They do plan to retake the GMAT. They have very interesting experience within the Federal Government, helping small businesses in underserved communities. Their goals for the MBA make great sense, and they would appear to be a potentially strong candidate, especially if they improve their numbers profile. This week's second MBA candidate has a strong career in sales within the tech industry, and is looking for the MBA to help them relocate from New York to the west coast, and potentially seek opportunities in the media and sports industries. They do have a lower GRE score of 316, but are planning a retake. We finished this podcast episode with a short discussion on the risks associated with doing a self-diagnosis in terms of determining why a candidate is rejected from an MBA program. This week, Duke / Fuqua and UVA / Darden will be releasing their Early Action round decisions. We then discussed a new content series that Clear Admit launched last week, which focuses on what top MBA programs are doing to prepare leaders for the challenges of climate change and broader sustainability issues. The first article in the series comes from Harvard. Graham highlighted the continuing Real Humans series; last week Clear Admit published content from Duke / Fuqua, Toronto / Rotman and Michigan / Ross. We then discussed the newly published class profiles from CMU / Tepper, NYU / Stern, Texas / McCombs and MIT / Sloan. Each of these class profiles reflects strong classes, despite a small downturn in application volumes. Graham then mentioned two upcoming events that Clear Admit is hosting: the first is with Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) on Wednesday, signups are here: https://www.bit.ly/clearadmitmlt The second event will be a Real Humans event, bringing together MBA students from leading programs, later in October. Finally, Graham talked about two additional podcasts that he's recently hosted: the first is an Adcom Q&A with Stanford, and the second is a discussion with Manish Dharia from GMAC, exploring the roll out of the new GMAT Focus Edition. As usual, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries. This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from China, which led to a discussion as to whether they are coming from an over-represented group of candidates. They completed an undergraduate degree in journalism, but pivoted to investment banking, which we thought was a very interesting pivot. They have a very solid GMAT of 730, but a slightly lower GPA of 3.3. This week's second MBA candidate is a 29 year old female, originally from Pakistan, who completed their undergraduate and their work experience in the United States. They appear to be a very interesting candidate, but we do worry about the combination of a lower GPA (due to cultural adjustments) and lower GRE of 317. They have taken the test several times, but plan to take it one more time, ahead of Round 2. The final MBA candidate has had a career in Real Estate, and is originally from Peru, with goals to return to Peru in the long run. They have a strong GPA from the United States, but have not yet taken the GRE. Their work experience also looks very strong, they have been working for 9 years. They also have a masters degree in Real Estate.

Graham highlighted our next Essay Insights series, which continues on Wednesday of this week, with CMU / Tepper, Columbia, Georgetown / McDonough, Texas / McCombs and UNC / Kenan Flagler; these events are very popular and bring together the leading MBA programs to talk about their admissions essay topics. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/cafallessays Graham then shared some insights from a recently published Adcom Q&A from Shelly Heinrich at Georgetown McDonough. Our final discussion focused on the recently published MBA class profile for Duke / Fuqua. Their class profile matched some of the observations we identified with the class profile of UCLA / Anderson (the class profile we discussed on last week's show). Fuqua is reporting a smaller class size, while keeping the quality of the class close to constant. We did also discuss the ranges of test scores and GPAs, but we think candidates would prefer to know the medians, or both. As usual, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from India - and therefore is over-represented in the pool.  At the same time, they appear to have very good numbers and strong work experience, balanced by decent volunteer activities outside of work. They are not over-reaching with their target programs in the first round, and we wonder if they should have targeted 1-2 M7 level programs. This week's second MBA candidate is also a strong candidate, based in the U.S. An All-American athlete from a top liberal arts college, they are working in consulting (MBB) with a focus on the climate. Their only weaker area is a slightly lower-than-average-for-top-programs GRE score. Should they apply in Round 1 with this score (325) or delay to Round 2 with a higher score. We think the latter might be a good strategy, or at least split the applications over two rounds. The final MBA candidate is an entrepreneur who has a great GRE score (333) but a poor GPA (2.9). While they have an upward trend for the GPA, they will need to use the optional essay to add context. They might also consider taking Business Fundamentals, or other similar options to show that they are prepared and committed to the academic aspect of the MBA experience. Graham highlighted our next Essay Insights series, which begins on Wednesday of this week, and continues the following two Wednesdays; these events are very popular and bring together the leading MBA programs to talk about their admissions essay topics. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/cafallessays Graham then mentioned two pieces of correspondence that we received last week, which led to discussions on the merits of One Year MBA programs that have a special industry focus, and the value of the full-time MBA program for a candidate who is also considering part-time options. We then discussed the recent announcement of the new MBA Admissions Director at Harvard Business School. Rupal Gadhia, an HBS alumna, will be joining the admissions team in October. Following this, we discussed a new initiative from INSEAD, that highlights their inclusion of sustainability content within the core curriculum of their MBA program. Graham then highlighted three Adcom Q&As, where we interview admissions directors at Texas / McCombs, Vanderbilt / Owen and UNC / Kenan Flagler. Graham also noted three new admissions tips posted to Clear Admit last week, each highlighting different aspects of the admissions essay writing process. Our final discussion focused on the recently published profile of UCLA / Anderson for the Class of 2025. While the quality of the class remains strong, we did note a decline, over the last two seasons, of the class size. We speculate if this trend will be seen with other leading MBA programs as class profiles continue to be published. As usual, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries. This week's first MBA admissions candidate is a military candidate who appears to have very good service experience. Our key concern regarding their profile is their GMAT score, which will be below average for the top programs. Because this appears to be the weakest part of the application, we are really encouraging them to retake the test. They can also expand their list of target programs, to include 1-2 more from the M7 group, and a few programs from the top 16 tier. This week's second MBA candidate is also from the military, and also appears to have a strong professional record. But like our first candidate, their achilles heel appears to be their test score, this time a GRE of 310. While they have taken this text three times already, each time they have improved. We are hoping for one more re-test, and pushing the applications to Round 2, rather than applying in Round 1 with the current score. The final MBA candidate is considering doing a test waiver, based on their undergraduate record, and their analytical work experience. They are also concerned that they need to apply in Round 1, before their life gets more hectic with a forthcoming family addition (new baby). That all said, we really encourage them to apply in Round 2 (they can get all their application materials prepared early) and find time to prepare and take the test. This should open up more access for them to leading programs. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Getting down to business, Graham highlighted two Admissions Directors Q and As, featuring Duke / Fuqua and Rochester / Simon. Graham also mentioned two admissions tips: one focusing on MBA admissions resumes, and the second targeting younger applicants. Graham then highlighted the July event series, Essay Insights, which continues this Wednesday with Columbia, CMU / Tepper, Michigan / Ross, UNC / Kenan / Flagler and Yale SOM. This is a very popular series with last week's event bringing more than 700 candidates; signups are here: https://bit.ly/cambaessay As usual, this episode features profile reviews taken from three recent ApplyWire entries: This week's first candidate is an architect by training, but pivoted early in their career, via Teach for America to work in FAANG recruiting. They have a 3.3 GPA, and are targeting a GMAT score above 700. They also have a masters in education with a specialization around mathematics instruction. Alex and Graham really like this profile overall, and think that with a good GMAT score they should have some solid options. Candidate #2 is a Nigerian who has now transitioned to living in London, working in finance in a consulting capacity. Their GPA is a little lower than average, but they have a super GRE score of 335. Alex and Graham encourage them to apply in the first rounds, to their target programs, and then develop a second round strategy, if necessary. Your hosts also think Cornell / Johnson and NYU / Stern are programs they might want to consider. This week's final candidate is very early in their career, after completing a very strong undergraduate experience. Alex and Graham encourage them to seek out more work before applying in about two years' time. While they might gain access to a decent MBA program now, they will likely gain access to better-tiered programs if they wait, and their MBA experience will also be more meaningful. Alex and Graham's first WireTaps episode for June gets rolling with the usual review of activity on LiveWire, which includes waitlist decisions and final decisions from Rounds 3 and 4. This upcoming week should feature final decisions from UVA / Darden and MIT / Sloan (for their deferred admissions programs) and for Texas / McCombs and London Business School. Alex and Graham then had a brief discussion about the still-vacant admissions director seats at HBS and Stanford GSB admissions. It looks like both programs will head into next season with leaders in interim roles as their searches continue. Graham highlighted three Real Humans Alumni stories: a UNC / Kenan Flagler alum at Google, a CMU / Tepper grad at Morgan Stanley and a Michigan Ross grad at McKinsey.  Graham then mentioned a recent Adcom Q&A with Coni Zingarelli at Rice / Jones, which includes tips regarding how to authentically address the admissions essays. Graham and Alex also discussed a Real Humans event, where Clear Admit brings together students and alumni of top programs for a discussion regarding their experiences. This event is scheduled for June 20th, and registration is at https://bit.ly/realhumansmba As always, this episode of WireTaps features three profile reviews of actual candidates, taken from ApplyWire entries on the site: First up is a two-time Olympic athlete who has moved on to technical recruiting at major tech companies after a decade in Olympic training and coaching. They still need to take the GMAT, but intend to do so in the near-term. Because they are an older candidate, and also have three young children, they are debating between targeting a full- or part-time MBA program. In light of a planned career pivot, Alex and Graham do think the full-time program might be the best pathway forward. This week's second candidate is another older candidate, but instead of 10 years of training in sports, this one has a very distinguished military career as a pilot. Alex and Graham do worry that the combination of this candidate's GMAT and GPA are a bit too far below the medians for the programs they are targeting, so the suggestion of a potential retake of the GMAT was raised. This week's final candidate also has a slightly below median combination of GMAT and GPA. They have a marketing background and are seeking programs that will help them further in the marketing field. Michigan / Ross, Indiana / Kelley and even UPenn / Wharton might be worth adding to their list. A retake on the GRE may also be warranted. This episode was recorded in Cornwall, England and Paris, France. It was produced and engineered in 'always sunny' Philadelphia by Dennis Crowley. Spring is in full bloom in Cornwall, England and Paris, France, as Alex and Graham check in for the latest episode of WireTaps!  This week's show begins with a discussion of activity on LiveWire, which includes waitlist decisions (all rounds) and final decisions (from Round 3). This upcoming week, Alex anticipates R3 decisions coming out for UNC / Kenan Flagler, Stanford, Chicago / Booth and Michigan / Ross. Graham highlighted the announcement of a new dean at Cornell / Johnson, Vishal Gaur, who comes in with an illustrious academic pedigree. Graham also commented on a “Friday's from the Frontline” piece which highlighted a Duke / Fuqua student who has explored a path in the alternative protein space. Graham then discussed one Real Humans Alumni story, an Emory / Goizueta grad working at Pfizer. This episode's opening segment wrapped up with some discussion around the MBA admissions event series that Clear Admit is hosting in May, which concludes this Wednesday with Columbia, Johnson, Georgetown / McDonough, and UVA / Darden. This series offers admissions overviews and strategic advice from each of the programs. Event signup is here: https://bit.ly/cambaevents This episode features three candidate profile reviews, drawn from recent entries on ApplyWire: The first candidate is based in Asia, and is looking to transition from the public and private sectors to a career in social impact work. Their GRE is decent (327) and they have six years of experience. The issue that Graham and Alex needed to discuss is the candidate's desire for an MBA that also offers a full scholarship. This week's second candidate is considering applying to business school while they simultaneously make a move from L.A. to New York City. Their career has been in real estate, and they want to transition to the property tech world (including venture capital focused in that domain). There are some complicated issues to unpack, here... The third and final candidate for this episode has a very interesting profile overall; they are a South African working in Asia. They also have extensive and adventurous outdoors activities that they pursue. Everything looks very promising, except their abysmal undergraduate showing. Alex and Graham discussed the necessary steps to try to mitigate this important aspect of their profile. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. Another, week, another episode of WireTaps!  Alex and Graham began the show with the usual discussion around activity on LiveWire, which now includes decision deadlines for the shorter Round 3 application cycle and some deferred enrollment interview invites.  Graham then highlighted three Real Humans Alumni stories, an INSEAD grad at Accenture, a CMU / Tepper grad at Amazon and a UPenn / Wharton grad at Pfizer. Graham also mentioned a recently published admissions tip that covers scholarship negotiation. He then reminded listeners about the MBA admissions event series that Clear Admit is hosting in May, which began last Wednesday, and continues this Wednesday with Duke / Fuqua, UNC / Kenan Flagler, Emory / Goizueta, and Texas / Austin. This series offers admissions overviews from each of the programs. Event signup is here: https://bit.ly/cambaevents For this week's candidate profiles and dilemmas, Alex and Graham tackled two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: The first featured candidate has super numbers (770, 3.68) and spent two years in a leadership development program before moving to a family business (a winery). Alex and Graham like their experience and think that they should be targeting the top programs. The one concern is their post MBA goals; Alex and Graham want to ensure the goals are relevant and plausible while also being impactful. Your hosts also discussed issues related to sourcing recommendations, and around the candidate's desire to be in Salt Lake City, post-MBA. This week's second candidate appears to have interesting work experience across four countries, including Germany. We do worry about their combination of numbers (322, 2.9); they have taken additional coursework to bolster their GPA. They have also already taken the GRE four times. There are strengths in this profile, but there are weaknesses that need mitigating. The third and final candidate this week is weighing offers from Berkeley / Haas with no scholarship and Duke / Fuqua with a large scholarship. They do want to be in the Bay Area, or Seattle, post MBA, which favors Haas, but they are not seeking tech employment. We encourage them to look closely at the Fuqua networks in those regions, and see if they think that Fuqua might work. They also love Fuqua's culture, which is an important consideration. Graham then highlighted three Real Humans Alumni pieces, including a London Business School graduate running Nona Women, a Duke / Fuqua graduate working at Microsoft, and a UNC / Kenan Flagler graduate working at J.P. Morgan. Graham also highlighted the upcoming event series that Clear Admit is hosting in May (each Wednesday), which will feature the majority of the leading MBA programs. The first event includes Harvard Business School, Berkeley / Haas, Wharton / Upenn, London Business School, and INSEAD. This series will offer application process overviews from each of the programs. We will then follow up with an essay workshop series in the months ahead. Event signup is here: https://bit.ly/cambaevent For our candidate reviews, we tapping into one ApplyWire entry and two DecisionWire entries: The first candidate looks to have a very strong profile, and is from Ghana. Alex and Graham are a little concerned about their weaker GRE score (315) which then led to a discussion on whether they might seek out a GRE waiver. Alex also stressed the need for this candidate to choose one short-term goal; currently they're debating between consulting and banking. This week's second candidate is considering offers from Yale and Ross, with scholarship support, and from Kellogg with no additional support. They want to work in Seattle as a consultant, post MBA. It's not a clear cut decision. The final candidate for this episode is debating between Haas and Kellogg for a product manager role in tech. They are an international student wanting to work in the U.S. for a period of time after their MBA. Haas would likely provide them better access to Silicon Valley, especially during their MBA, Kellogg would provide more geographic flexibility. Our latest episode of WireTaps begins with Graham and Alex taking stock of all the latest MBA LiveWire activity and mentioning upcoming deadlines for UNC / Kenan Flagler, Cambridge / Judge, MIT / Sloan and Berkeley / Haas. Graham then highlighted recently published content on Clear Admit, including a piece that compares the GMAT to the GRE; we then discussed whether to take the current GMAT or the newly formatted GMAT. Graham then highlighted seven Real Human's alumni pieces, offering a variety of perspectives from MBA alumni working in Consulting, Banking, Tech, and Entertainment, from a host of leading MBA programs. Graham also highlighted the Real Humans of Stanford article that features several current Stanford MBAs. Graham then noted the upcoming event series that Clear Admit is hosting in May (each Wednesday), which will feature the majority of the leading MBA programs. This series will offer application overviews from each of the programs. We will then follow up with our equally popular essay workshop series in the months ahead. For the candidate profiles this week, Alex and Graham tackled one ApplyWire entry and two DecisionWire entries: The first candidate featured this week is targeting next season. His numbers are very decent (730 GMAT, 3.75 GPA in chemical engineering). He works in “Big 4” consulting and hails from the Midwest. He is still early in his career, and also asked if he should retake the GMAT, even though it is already quite high. Alex and Graham discussed these two issues. This week's second candidate is weighing offers from UVA / Darden (with no scholarship, yet) and Cornell / Johnson, with scholarship. Their post MBA goals still lack a little clarity, which makes selecting the right program a little tougher. They are from India, and Alec and Graham suggest that Johnson with the scholarship support might make good sense. This also led to a discussion related to STEM. This week's third and final candidate is considering whether to attend a one year MBA, with post MBA goals of consulting, or wait another year and reapply in the first rounds. They are also still on the waitlist for another two programs. This led to an interesting debate in terms of how the current economic climate might make things a little tougher for one year programs. Lawrence has been in higher ed since he graduated high school. He earned his BA and MPA at the University of Arizona and began his career in admissions there. He then became Assistant Director of MBA Admissions at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, followed by a stint at UNC Kenan-Flagler where he rose to become the Director of the Undergraduate Business Program. He then served as Senior Assistant Dean of Graduate Business Programs at Fordham's Gabelli School of Business for over six years and joined Dartmouth Tuck as Executive Director of Admissions and Financial Aid just this past August. 7;'/ Lawrence, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [2:00] Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm excited to be here. And I'm delighted to speak with you. Now let's start with a basic question, which is typically how I open these interviews. Can you provide an overview of Dartmouth Tuck's MBA program? [2:06] Yeah. Great. Thank you. Again, I'm excited to be here. Thank you for having me. The Tuck School of Business is at Dartmouth College here in Hanover, New Hampshire. We are an extremely rigorous, two-year, Ivy League MBA, nestled here in the Upper Valley, which provides an  opportunity to reflect and focus while you're here. It's an opportunity for students to really connect with one another. Again, it's a rigorous academic program. I think sometimes people think that coming to a small school means there's limited opportunities, but there are boundless opportunities here with a culture of collaboration and community. You can do almost anything you want to do in terms of your career aspirations. We have a culture of co-investment, so we see the students as partners along all dimensions of their journey, whether it's the admissions journey, whether it's the student services journey, or the career journey, and so that co-investment serves as the cornerstone of the Tuck ethos. And in terms of the opportunities, some of the opportunities that struck me in preparing for the call, one of them was the Global Insight Expeditions. Could you touch on that? [3:20] Yeah. Our Global Insight Expeditions are a great opportunity for the students to focus on a particular area of the country with a particular faculty member. They're typically two to three weeks, and it's an opportunity for them to learn about a particular element of a faculty member's research, which is anchored in a particular area. It's also an opportunity for them to learn and understand the culture of doing business wherever they're going. So for this winter, we sent students to Denmark, we sent students to Israel, and we sent students to Vietnam. So it's an opportunity to build their network and also it's an opportunity for them to engage in global teams.

This upcoming week will include Northwestern / Kellogg, Harvard and Stanford. Graham highlighted a new “by the numbers” article focusing on GMAT scores at top programs. Stanford leads the way with a median score of 737! Alex and Graham then discussed UVA / Darden's career report. The school reports a very high median starting salary of $175,000. This positions them them very well against M7 programs, and the figure is likely influenced by the large portion of the graduating class going into consulting, at 43.5%. Graham highlighted two Real Humans Alumni stories, a CMU / Tepper alum at Microsoft and a Michigan / Ross alum at Google. For the candidates reviewed this week, Alex selected one ApplyWire entry and two DecisionWire entries: The first candidate is from Brazil and appears to have very solid work experience and strong community service activities. They graduated top of their class, too. They are applying in the final round, which may harm them a little.  Alex and Graham are also a little concerned about their GMAT at 710, but ultimately think this type of candidate should be at a top program. This week's second candidate is deciding between a free-ride at UNC / Kenan Flagler or Darden with no scholarship. This is a classic dilemma, when weighing offers between programs in two different tiers, where money helps redress the balance. They want to move into consulting. The final candidate featured in this episode is debating between Kellogg, NYU / Stern (with a large scholarship) and USC Marshall. They are seeking a career in Media and Entertainment. The candidate have a 321 GRE (wish it was a little higher) and a 3.15 GPA (which will be below average). The latter is complemented by a graduate degree GPA of 3.65. They're applying in Rounds 2 and 3, and have received an interview invite from  Michigan / Ross. Fingers crossed!  This week's second candidate is applying as an undergraduate to deferred enrolment programs. Alex thinks they should reduce their target school list and only apply to the top programs, for now. They can always reapply in several years' time. Alex and Graham like their internship experience, they are an under-represented candidate, and their GMAT is at 700. Some very decent potential overall. Wiretaps candidate #3 is originally from Africa, but has been in the United States for most of their life. They have a longer set of work experience, as well as a masters degree. They have not taken the GMAT yet, and are targeting next season. We are hoping to see a GMAT above 700, and really like their profile, overall. This week's episode kicks off with a quick discussion around the last of the Round 2 application deadlines for top programs (MIT / Sloan have a deadline this Wednesday). Graham and Alex also touched upon the fact LiveWire is starting to see one or two programs release early interview invites for Round 2, CMU / Tepper seems to be leading the way in this regard. It is also worth noting that Duke / Fuqua has added an extra deadline for this season, while UVA Darden have made their final round 'rolling'; is this a sign of deflated application volumes? Alex also noted that Goldman Sachs has announced a round of lay-offs; they join several leading tech forms that have also announced lay-offs in recent months. Your hosts then discussed the potential implications of a less steady job market in terms of the ROI of the MBA. Graham highlighted the return of the Real Numbers series from Clear Admit, kicking off with looking at tuition costs at the top programs. Graham then reminded listeners about two deferred enrollment events that Clear Admit is hosting on February 1 and February 8. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/defer23 For this week's candidate profile reviews, Alex chose two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: First up, Graham introduces a very solid candidate for top programs: he has a 730 GMAT, 3.67 GPA and solid banking and private equity experience. He is looking to transition from PE to Asset Management, and Alex and Graham like the switch, but hope there's enough to differentiate his profile from some other very good, but similar, candidates. This week's second candidate has an ambitious goal of establishing a Search Fund straight after the MBA. We discussed some of the implications of that goal, and while we believe they have great work experience to date, we worry their numbers (320/3.2) in combination may hold them back, for now - even if they have completed MBA Math. This week's final candidate is debating admissions offers from Berkeley / Haas, Duke / Fuqua and UNC / Kenan Flagler (all with scholarships of varying amounts). They are looking to do investment banking, and are an international student. We think it boils down to the geographic preferences and IB placements, and lean towards Fuqua in this case. In November 2021, almost exactly a year ago, she became Director of Full-Time MBA Admissions and Recruiting.  Can you give an overview of UNC Kenan-Flagler's full-time MBA program, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:27] UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We are a two-year MBA program at 62 credits. There are 15 core classes where candidates get the breadth of business. We have 12 concentrations that students can select from to gain more in-depth knowledge. These vary from business analytics to consulting, marketing, healthcare, real estate, and so on and so forth. You really get to create your own journey, if you will, with an MBA from Kenan-Flagler. We are STEM-designated, and it does not matter which concentration you pursue. You actually don't even have to, and about 20% of our students will just do a general MBA and they'll pick and choose from over 125 different electives to make up their program. We do require an internship between year one and year two. A lot of our students will do a "traditional internship" where they will apply and go on to work six to eight weeks in the summer with a company. What's new at Kenan-Flagler? [3:41] There are a lot of exciting things going on at Kenan-Flagler. We had our groundbreaking ceremony in September for a new building that will open up in 2024. We're very excited about that. We're not looking to expand the MBA program, but the building that we're in currently was opened in 1997. We do want to grow our undergrad business program by doubling it, so we are building that facility. Jamie Dimon from JP Morgan Chase came and was one of our guest speakers.  We also just launched our Charlotte MBA Executive Program, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It's about two hours from Chapel Hill and is an executive format that working professionals can use to earn their MBA. That's in-person and is targeted to applicants from North Carolina as well as South Carolina because Charlotte is close to the South Carolina border. As Charlotte continues to grow, especially in the financial space, we saw that it was a great opportunity to offer the Charlotte MBA, as well as some executive development opportunities off campus. Can you highlight the modular system? [5:31] We call them mods and prospective students always ask, "What's a mod?" A mod is essentially seven to eight weeks of classes that you take. You're in Mod 1 when you start class. By October break, you'll be taking your final exams,

Happy Halloween!  This week's podcast starts off with a truly spooky tale about the "Infamous HBS 119"...a story that didn't end well for MBA applicants back in 2005.  On more of an upbeat note, Alex and Graham congratulated Stanford GSB alum, Rishi Sunak, on his new role of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Activity on MBA LiveWire was very busy last week with many candidates reporting interview invites including UPenn / Wharton and MIT / Sloan candidates - Alex and Graham mentioned that they anticipate the same for this upcoming week. Graham then highlighted the new Real Humans pieces from UMD / Smith, UGA / Terry, IMD and UNC / Kenan Flagler. Graham also highlighted the Adcom Q&A from Emory / Goizueta as well as its employment report. Emory has a terrific average starting salary ($165k) which is likely tied to the school's sending 55% of graduates to consulting. 66% of their students remain in the Southern region of the United States, making it a very strong program for that area. Graham and Alex also discussed MIT / Sloan's Class of 2024 profile. The profile, itself, is very good, but the class size appears to have dropped quite considerably, leading your hosts to believe that they also experienced a drop in applications.  Graham also highlighted Clear Admit's upcoming Deferred Enrolment event; signups are here: https://bit.ly/defermba As usual, this episode features three candidate profile reviews, taken from ApplyWire entries: First up, Alex choses a military candidate, with nine years of experience who has unfortunately been rejected in Round 1 by Harvard and Wharton (without interviews). While Alex and Graham understand this is a tough start to the process, they believe there is a spot for this candidate among the top programs with his remaining applications in Round 1. If Round 2 is needed, Alex and Graham think he should still target M7 and top-16 programs. This week's second candidate is an Indian national, with strong tech and operations experience in the United States. He also has strong numbers and was waitlisted last season at several top programs. He reapplied to the same in Round 1 this season, and there is everything to suggest they may have better news this time out. The third candidate profile featured this week only targeted Stanford in Round 1, and has received an interview invite. He is very focused on the online video gaming industry and wondering whether any other top programs would be suitable, if he is not successful with Stanford. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the marvelous Dennis Crowley in the City of Brotherly Love. Please tell at least one person about the Clear Admit podcast and don't forget to rate and review this show wherever you listen! Best of luck to everyone applying to business school, and don't forget you can always email Graham and Alex at info@clearadmit.com using the subject line 'Wire Taps'.

This week's action-packed episode runs the gamut from admissions gossip to HBS interview invites, and from Fortune's MBA ranking to candidate profile reviews...  Alex and Graham kick things off by reviewing the upcoming MBA admissions deadlines, including UNC / Kenan Flagler, Texas / McCombs and USC / Marshall.  They also discuss the activity on MBA LiveWire as Harvard released its Round 1 interview invites. This led to a segment on the forthcoming departure of Chad Losee from Harvard, who joins admissions directors from Stanford, Columbia, Michigan, Tepper, and more as part of an admissions exodus. Graham then highlighted the Real Humans pieces from Emory / Goizueta, ESADE, London Business School and Rochester / Simon as well as the recently published class profiles for Stanford, Chicago / Booth and UVA / Darden. And finally, before tackling three ApplyWire entries, Graham asked Alex to weigh in on the recent MBA ranking from Fortune. As to the this week's profile reviews: first up, Alex picks a finance candidate from London. They have very good numbers (750, 4.0) and have targeted all the usual suspects in terms of top programs in the Northeast of the U.S. While they are active at work, with respect to additional activities, Alex and Graham are curious what they do outside of work. There was also some discussion regarding their heritage, and its potential impact on their candidacy. This week's second candidate also has an outstanding GMAT (750), but their GPA is slightly lower. They are a reapplicant, and have made some improvements over the additional year. Their goal is entrepreneurship, and Alex and Graham encouraged them to also consider UPenn / Wharton (they do not want to be on the West Coast, which rules out some additional options). Finally, Alex selects an Indian lawyer, who is targeting next season. There is a lot to like about their experience, and the numbers are very good, too. Because they already have 8 years of experience, Graham and Alex would have preferred if they were targeting this season, but next season, in the first rounds, may well be fine, as long as they have a good focus on their “fit”. Fit because they are a lawyer, and also because they are on the longer end of the work experience spectrum. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered in West Philadelphia by the Steve Albini of podcasts, Dennis Crowley. This week's episode of the Clear Admit MBA Admissions Podcast begins with a peek at the upcoming deadlines for this week, which includes Michigan / Ross, Chicago / Booth, Berkeley / Haas and Cornell / Johnson; interview invites are also scheduled for Duke / Fuqua and IESE. Graham then makes a plea for a new survey we have published which asks about brand perceptions for each of the top programs. More details are here: https://bit.ly/mbabrands Amazon gift cards are available to some respondents! Graham also highlighted the new class profiles for Harvard, Haas, and Dartmouth / Tuck. Overall, the profiles look very decent, but it's clear application volumes are down about 15% across most top tier programs. Haas reduced its class size this season, and this might be a consequence of that drop. This week's episode also includes a discussion about the recent Bloomberg MBA ranking, which led to a discussion on the merits of Clear Admit's own tiered ranking methodology. Graham then noted the newly published Real Humans pieces for Fuqua and Columbia, as well as the Adcom Q&As for Georgia / Terry and Washington / Olin. Graham also highlighted the essay workshop series; last Wednesday's event had over 400 MBA applicants in attendance, this Wednesday the participating MBA programs are Columbia, Duke / Fuqua, CMU / Tepper, Texas / Austin and UNC / Kenan Flagler. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/clearadmitfall As always, our WireTaps portion of the show tackles three real candidate profile reviews, taken from ApplyWire entries on the site: First up, Alex has selected a candidate from South Africa with super numbers and a long term goal to return to the region, which both Graham and Alex like. Their work experience is a little on the shorter side (less than 3 years) but your hosts think there's a lot of potential for targeting the top tier programs. This week's second candidate is originally from Nigeria and is working in London in an auditing capacity. Alex and Graham discuss the reasons why some speculate that auditing and accounting is not seen in the same light as strategy consulting and other more strategy-focused careers. This candidate plan to retake the GRE (current score of 321) and split their applications between rounds 1 and 2. Our third candidate this week is from higher-ed fundraising and development, and has already completed MBA Math (to make up for a slightly lower GPA) while targeting a high GRE. His goals are very interesting, and might well be a strong candidate for top programs. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by Dennis Crowley in West Philadelphia. Thanks for listening to the show week and and week out - we truly appreciate it! More details are here:  https://www.clearadmit.com/clearadmit-plus-members/ Beyond chatting about Clear Admit+, Graham highlighted the recent Adcom Q&As with Stanford and Arizona State / Carey. Graham then highlighted the ongoing MBA essay workshop series; this Wednesday's final event includes admissions representatives from Cornell / Johnson, UNC / Kenan Flagler, Yale SOM, UCLA / Anderson, and Michigan / Ross. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/cambaessays As always, this episode features in depth discussion about three real MBA applicants, taken from our ApplyWire tool: First up, Alex selects an India engineer, who has focused their career in Space. We like that experience and hope it becomes part of their long term goal, as a point of differentiation. They have average numbers for their demographic (710 GMAT, 3.3 GPA), so career differentiation will help. They may also seek to retake the GMAT. This week's second candidate is earlier in their career, but is planning on applying in another year. She is a software engineer at Microsoft, born in Spain, but migrated to the US several years ago with her family. Her numbers are very decent (720, 3.77) but should she - as an early bird - consider retaking the GMAT?  Finally, Alex and Graham profile another candidate who may need to tackle the issue of an over-represented profile (this is not entirely clear). They work in finance, and started their career in India then moved to Dubai. They are using the MBA, in part, to move geographies to either Europe or America. A strong GMAT (730) with a decent (but potentially not outstanding) GPA should keep them in the running, but more details are needed to fully understand their strategy. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by Dennis Crowley in glorious West Philadelphia. Plus it's all free. It gives me great pleasure to have on Admissions Straight Talk Dawna Clarke, Senior Assistant Dean of Admissions at UVA Darden. Dawna is one of the most experienced and respected MBA admission directors I've had the privilege of knowing. She started her career in MBA admissions at UNC Kenan-Flagler, then moved to Darden (which is where we first met) and served for 15 years as director of admissions, and then served in the same role at Tuck and even spent a short period as an MBA admissions consultant. She returned to Darden in 2017. In all her positions and roles in MBA admissions, Dawna is known for running an applicant-friendly admissions process while attracting great candidates to the schools that she has been associated with. Dawna, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk and congratulations again on your new title. Can we start with a basic overview of the Darden MBA program for listeners who are not that familiar with it, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:18] Sure, absolutely. I'm happy to give an overview of Darden. Darden is a two-year, full-time, general management program. Assuming we're primarily talking about the full-time format, we do offer other formats as well, but I will focus on the full-time format. I will say one of the most distinctive elements of Darden is that it is primarily a case method school. Over the years, our faculty has revisited the curriculum and asked whether a case method is the most relevant teaching method. To date, since the school was founded in the 1950s, they continue to commit to the case method.  The philosophy is that the best way to learn how to make business decisions is to start making them. At Darden, we're trying to cultivate a variety of skills, leadership skills, team skills -- it's a general management program. So people are going to get accounting skills, financial skills, global skills, but one of the most relevant skills that we're trying to cultivate are strong business decision-making skills. The philosophy is that the best way to start to cultivate those skills is to practice. Students do over 500 cases while they're at Darden. So there's a lot of practice. It's very practical and relevant. One of the benefits of the case method that a lot of people don't know about is that it exposes you to a lot of industries. So for students who are coming to Darden, a lot of people know that they want to transition into a business career, but they may not know what functional area. Through the general management program, you're going to get a lot of exposure to all the functional areas of business like accounting and economics and finance. But because it's a case method school, every case is set within an industry. So in your two years at Darden, a student is going to get exposed to almost 70 different industries. Even if you don't go into energy, knowing a little bit about energy may be really valuable to you if you have a client in the future, who's from the energy industry. You're going to have cases from transportation, hospitality, financial services, consulting, startups, petrochemical companies. I love the phrase, “We don't know what we don't know.”

Al Dea discusses his path to the MBA, and shares wisdom for ensuring a meaningful MBA experience [Show notes] Our guest today, Al Dea, earned his bachelors in Marketing and Theology from Boston College in 2010 and then became a Deloitte Analyst and Consultant until starting his MBA at UNC’s Kenan Flagler Business School. He earned his MBA from Kenan Flagler in 2015 and returned to Deloitte for a couple of years. He then worked in product management starting in 2017 and today is a Senior Manager in Product Marketing at a leading high tech company. On the side he started MBASchooled in 2015 and more recently Careerschooled.com. And, he just published his first book, MBA Insider: How to Make the Most of Your MBA Experience. Can you tell us about your background?  Where you grew up? What do you like to do for fun? [2:23] I grew up in upstate New York and went to Boston College where I was a marketing and theology major. I got my MBA and then moved to San Francisco partly because I didn’t want to do winter anymore. I have an older sister in LA but family still in upstate New York, so I travel often to see family and friends. I am a runner which is challenging in San Francisco. I wouldn’t consider myself a writer but always had a journal growing up. I am also a sports fanatic, and follow basketball, football, baseball, you name it. How did you get interested in marketing and product development? [4:35] I knew I wanted to spend some time doing consulting in my career – it wasn’t a matter of if, but when. I also knew there were other things I wanted to try. In business school you do an exercise where you write down all the things you think you are good at, along with examples, and get some feedback on it. From that you get a better sense of things you like doing and actually are good at, where do they fit, and in what types of companies and industries. What I really like is being an evangelist or ambassador for things. I also enjoy the idea of understanding who you are serving, in this case the customer, and to be able to come up with a solution, so product marketing is a really good fit for me. I still use the core skills I learned as a consultant, but I continue learning every day. What did you find most difficult in the MBA application process? Does anything stand out? [7:45] From a tactical level I got waitlisted at every school I applied to, and ironically enough five years ago, when I did the blog post for Accepted, that was one of the things that I wrote about – the experience of getting waitlisted. So that was a challenge. Strategically in the application process, this is such a big decision and takes a lot of effort. There is a tendency to treat every single outcome as binary – you get accepted or rejected, and it puts a lot of pressure on people. You apply, submit some things, and the admissions committee decides if you are in or not. I put a lot of undo pressure on myself. I have to get in or else my life isn’t going to work out. I was 24-25 and to feel like so much was riding on the rest of my career, I put so much pressure to “make it right.” Things have a way of working out, maybe not in the moment but in the grand scheme of things. Talking to prospective students now, I say, "You are not going to appreciate it, but it’s going to be okay. As things happen, we’ll work on them together." hbspt.cta.load(58291, '088cf431-34b3-4030-9c1e-432eee48f613', {});   What was most valuable in your UNC MBA experience? [15:37] For me it was a supportive and collaborative community. Lots of great resources, smart people, you'll find at any top program, but having supportive collaborative people was incredibly valuable.

A few episodes ago I had the pleasure of speaking with Sue Bohle about the Serious Play Conference. The conference in its sixth year was hosted at UNC Kenan-Flagler business school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The conference moves around every year so I was very excited that it was in my own backyard this year. While the conference wasn’t exclusively about creating serious games for healthcare there were a number of speakers there talking about the games they were developing. In today’s podcast, I have an interview with for brilliant minds who are using gamification, a term will be discussing shortly, to help individuals with learning, education, engaging, and managing health and behavioral challenges. My four guests are Doug Watley with breakaway games, Lynn Fiellin with the Yale Center for Health and Learning, Dan shirtless with the "Breathe Free" game, and Randy Brown of Virtual Heroes. This is just a small selection of the many speakers and attendees present at this conference. I encourage you to find out more about "serious play" and "serious games" Give a listen to my interview with Sue Bohle. My first interview is with Doug Watley the CEO of breakaway games. His game "Vital Signs", was just awarded one of two best in show awards.  One of the sessions that fascinated me was the discussion of how a 2-D player game was created to help at-risk middle school-aged children work through scenarios of behavior choices and what the consequences would be. Let’s learn about Lynn Fiellin's Play2Protect game. I had a really interesting conversation with Dan Scherlis he is both a professional game developer and now a health games executive producer. It’s very interesting thoughts on the word game of vacation and told me about a game he’s working on "Breath Free" to help smokers try to quit. We even talked about good versus evil. My last interview is with Randy Brown of virtual heroes is a fascinating spinoff of Epic Games Unreal Engine creating virtual worlds to help teach and connect individuals in a variety of professions from the military to public service to healthcare. His company, Virtual Heroes is working with the Duke School of Nursing on an IRB study for Type II diabetes support in a virtual world. Let’s hear what Randy has to say. Thank you for listening to get social health I hope you found serious games for healthcare as interesting as I did. As a reminder go give a listen to my other podcast with Sue Bolla the executive director of the Serious Play Conference. I’ve published over hundred episodes of Get Social Health. There have been a lot of fascinating, fun and interesting conversations with healthcare practitioners, digital health thought leaders, physicians nurses and healthcare professionals who are actively using social media to further their healthcare messages. When you visit the get social health.com website you’ll find on the right-hand side a search bar so type in a topic and will be able to find some really great interviews. If you have a suggestion for an interview either a topic or an individual I’d love to hear about it please reach out to me via Janet@getsocialhealth.com one thing I would ask is for you to take the time to give me a review or rating it helps other individuals find the podcast and we could always use a few more listeners. "...there's definitely a great community just among all of us." Thank you to Consortium representatives for another outstanding Q&A! As always, the Consortium team and partnering school reps offered loads of insight into the Consortium admissions process and the ways in which the individual programs support the Consortium mission. See the below excerpt for more on this: Linda Abraham: Elva asks, "What percentage of your students in each of your programs are Consortium students? How does your program help candidates live up to the mission of the Consortium?" Allison Jesse: Okay, I'd like to start with the mission part because I think in terms of the Consortium's mission, we have core values at our particular school, UNC Kenan-Flagler, and I'm sure many of my colleagues can also speak to something similar at their business school. Leadership, integrity, teamwork, excellence, all of these things mirror what the Consortium is all about....in terms of Consortium members, it's about 7%. Cindy Jennings Millette: Well, I certainly agree with what Allison said. The culture in business school, definitely being able to kind of give back in that leadership experience and team skills and all that, definitely melds really well with what the Consortium has. And we also have a culture at Berkeley, we have four defining principles, one being, "Beyond Yourself” and “Student Always," and I think both of those really do mirror what the Consortium mission is. Right now, we have 20 students in each class that are Consortium members, and I do think that what's really great is we see a lot of these people in different roles throughout the leadership on campus, including in our MBA association, so that's someone who's a Vice President of, Admissions, and Student Services, and all of that. And then also in the different clubs, the industry-focused clubs, you just see students being very involved, as we see a lot of our students being involved, and that kind of drive to give back you definitely see throughout the community. Jon Fuller: So, our MBA class each year is about 500 students, give or take. And this year, we have about 45 Consortium students....So not quite 10%, 8 -- 9%...So it's a very healthy number, and it's definitely a presence that's well-known and well-regarded on campus, and very similar to what Cindy was saying. Instead of..."How does your program help candidates?" It's really how do our students help candidates live up to the mission? Because they really hold one another accountable. We have a really strong and connected culture between MBA 1s and MBA 2s, which I won't go so far as to say is unique to Ross, but it always surprises me as to just how well-enmeshed they are with one another. And so the MBA 2s really take the role, in saying, "Hey, you know, we have this fine tradition here at Ross of not being passive individuals in our MBA experience, and taking on those leadership roles, and really stepping up to the opportunity." And sort of demonstrate the mission by living it, and demonstrating it to others by their actions and the ways that they're involved and the ways that they try to educate their classmates who come from, not just other U.S. backgrounds where they may have had more or less engagement, or opportunity to experience a diverse environment, but also with our international students where you really might have a monolithic culture, which is really kind of the antithesis of what you find here in the United States. So they're not just engaged with the U.S. students, but also, it's a great opportunity to demonstrate that activity or that perspective to our international students as well. Rabia Ahmed: Sure, so I think one of the really nice things about the Consortium, in general, is that during OP, as Rebecca mentioned, the entire Consortium family gets to come together, and so you meet not only the students that are going to be in your class, but also in all of the other Consortium schools,

We hope you enjoyed our recent Q&A with Sherry Wallace of UNC Kenan-Flagler. During the session we discussed a number of important topics related to UNC admissions, student life, scholarships, and more. If you missed this informative event, or if you'd like to review, you can read the whole UNC Kenan-Flagler Q&A transcript, listen to the full audio clip online, or subscribe to our podcast in iTunes and catch as many of the MBA Admissions Q&As as you want. Here is a section from the UNC Q&A on the role interviews play in the admissions process: Linda Abraham: Fred asks “I'm interviewing on campus next week -- How much will my interviewer know about me, my application, resume, et cetera?” And then I would like you, after you answer Fred's specific question, to just address the whole issue of interviews; what can people expect, what's the role of the interview in the admissions process, et cetera? Sherry Wallace: Oh great! I'm going to answer the specific question for a person who is going to interview. Kenan-Flagler tries to do interviews relatively blindly, which means that your interviewer will have your resume and little else. Sometimes, depending on where we are in the admissions cycle, it's possible that your interviewer may have also read your application, but in general they have not and we would prefer that they have not because we want the interview to be just another input. We're going to have input from the people who read your applications, we're going to have input from your recommenders, we're going to have your test scores -- we're going to have all of those things to consider, and we'd like to have, in addition to that, someone who's spent about 30 minutes with the candidate to tell us what he or she was like in that 30-minute window. So, you should assume they'll only have your resume. Linda Abraham: Are the interviewers usually students, alumni, or members of the admissions team? Sherry Wallace: All of our interviewers are members of the admission team. We do not currently have students serving in that role, although we certainly would have many capable students, but we prefer to have our students be your advocates. When you visit Kenan-Flagler or you reach out to a student, we want you to feel very comfortable that this is someone who's going to answer my question, who's going to be all about me, and is not necessarily evaluating me and passing that along to the admissions committee. We do have alumni that we have trained as extended members of the admission committee, and generally the alumni are only doing interviews outside the US where we just would like to be able to offer more face-to-face opportunities than we, as a staff, have the ability to travel. Whether you interview by phone with a member of the committee, by webcam which has become very popular, or face to face with an alumnus or one of us on campus, they all carry the same weight. We have no preference, whatever is most convenient for the applicant to do the interview in the time they need to do it. Usually our interviews last about 30 minutes, maybe as long as 45 minutes, depending on how much question and answer there is. Linda Abraham: Okay, great. And what is the role of the interview in the evaluation process? Sherry Wallace: Despite what most people think, I don't know anyone who interviews their way into a program. Linda Abraham: Usually you interview your way out of a program. Sherry Wallace: Yes. I probably have known a few people who have revealed a little something more in an interview that may not have been for us. And I appreciate the sensitivity because I know I personally feel like if I could just get in front of somebody and talk to them, I can be more compelling. But the truth is, and this is why we are currently interviewing by invitation only -- and that is because there are some candidates that no matter how engaging, no matter how well they articulate themselves,
