Hollie and Rusty have taken digital nomad life to a completely different place: The wilderness. Quite literally, they work from the most remote national forests in the United States, all while working online in digital marketing and IT security. Hollie used to work with Jeff Baker as a content marketing strategist for Brafton. But late into her tenure she (using her own words) "strong armed" her employer to get them to let start working remote out of Colorado. Technically she made this possible by first proving herself to the organization for years, then converting to a consultant so that Brafton didn't need to incorporate in a new state. Both parties got what they needed out of the deal. Soon after going remote, she met Rusty and decided to go on a weeklong vacation living out of truck camper in national forests. That weeklong trip turned into six weeks. And that six weeks turned into a lifestyle in which they spend about half their time living and working remotely out of a camper van in the forest, and the other half the time in short-term leases around the United States. They are living the lives of the dreams every day. They wake up with the most beautiful views in the entire United States for half the year, and the other half the year they choose whichever new city they want to explore. You won't be able to find Hollie or Rusty anytime soon, because they are going to be moving to a remote island off the coast of Alaska next year! Link mentioned: Overlander Starlink

So understand that my intent for this particular topic, this search is information, I'm just looking to learn and don't break that pathway and offer me something that adds value to my current mindset. When creating the strategy, the informational, and just understanding those intersection points, and really trying to knowing that some of that content is going to more directly generate the leads, and the remainder is really going to indirectly.Same point with the lead magnets. It doesn't need to be an earth shattering, lead magnet or tool that nobody's created, or nobody's ever thought about. It just needs to add some value, you know. And the good point is that, we always assume we need to provide a lot more than the user does.Start with the assumption that nobody wants to read it. And what that's going to do is it's going to force you to create something way out of the box with your subject line and with the content that you put in there.Guest Links:.Brafton: https://www.brafton.com/Connect with Jeff Baker on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bakerseo/Learn More:Check Out All of My Podcast Episodes: https://podcast.nealschaffer.comJoin My Digital First Mastermind: https://nealschaffer.com/membership/ Learn about My Fractional CMO Consulting Services: https://nealschaffer.com/cmoDownload All of My Free EBooks: https://nealschaffer.com/freebies/Subscribe to my YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/nealschaffer

94% of content created generates ZERO backlinks, and 1.3% of articles take 74% of all social social shares. Most content does not work, but why? Longer headlines perform much better than shorter headlines. Also that shorter headlines can feel like stock headlines, meaning they are generic, and that could be a reason people are turned off by them. There is no correlation between social shares and backlinks. Topic 3: Do marketing agencies practice what they preach? ATF’s 2019 opener, featuring Andy Crestodina, reiterates the need for authenticity The opening episode of season 2 is Andy Crestodina, cofounder and strategic director of Orbit Media, and God bless him for gracing Episode One with his presence. If not for Crestodina’s ability to navigate Ma’s meanderings and Baker’s bluster, turning their verbal play-dough into cogent content marketing takeaways... who knows where we’d be. He elaborates that the content piece - “the cheese to the traps” - will generate the links and authority to rank for commercial-intent keyphrases and address demand. But the rest of the formula, which includes utilizing influencers, shareability, posting in a variety of places and savvily employing visuals, hinges chiefly on connection. Be personable. Be relatable. Be authentic. It’s not a bad rallying cry for a new year’s resolution, right? Not exactly in midseason form Poor Crestodina. It’s unclear whether anyone prepped him with any sort of agenda for the discussion. He handles it well, despite Baker handing off segues with the grace and efficiency of a 6-year-old flag football quarterback. Not sure whether Andy was compensated for doing this - hopefully we at least sent him a Brafton tumbler. Undeterred, the author of Content Chemistry: An Illustrated Handbook for Content Marketing casually drops digital marketing dimes like: Digital ink is never dry Great content marketers are collectors Use screenshots, use charts. Every image should further the express intent of adding value to the piece. To be more productive with a larger content production task, break it into smaller more manageable tasks, like you would any other major undertaking. 2019: The year of stock reckoning We fly down the homestretch with a lighthearted yet pointed discussion on why stock photos are canceled. Apparently Crestodina’s been “angry” (Ma’s words, not his) about stock images because they represent a missed opportunity to be authentic. A stock image neither assists the content around it nor can it be the focus itself. People are out here saying “it’s so hard to be original, so hard to differentiate,” Andy opines, and then they use a stock photo. Pssh. Many, many thanks to our guest for hanging with us and being genuinely good-natured, while providing lots of fodder for thought as we trudge through the winter months. Crestodina has a set a high bar for as-yet-unspecified future guests, and set Season Two off with otherwise unattainable credibility. We have Kaite Rosa who is the Director of Marketing and Content at VentureFizz. If you haven't heard of VentureFizz, we'll definitely dive more into that, but let me tell you, they have some fantastic material if you are a startup tech company in Boston especially with their Talent on the Move series as well as their Driven profile series. Kaite, thank you for coming in and how are you doing today? Kaite Rosa: I'm doing great. How are you? Evin Anderson: Doing fantastic. Thank you. Now glad you can make it in and talk with us today. For people that again aren't familiar with VentureFizz, could you introduce the company as well as how you got involved? Kaite Rosa: VentureFizz is an online platform covering tech entrepreneurship and career inspiration focused entirely on companies here in Boston. We have one of the hottest job boards here in Boston with over 1,500 jobs for tech and startup companies and over 200 companies have a biz page with us, which is a place for them to not only feature their new roles, but also highlight their company culture. Evin Anderson: It's such a great way of connecting people with these startups. Do you know where the original concept first formulated from? Kaite Rosa: Sure. Our founder, Keith Cline, he started VentureFizz back in 2009. He in his previous life if you will was a recruiter for over I think nearly 20 years and he was working with all these really great interesting companies and finding out all these unique stories and meeting really innovative people, and wanted a place to like you said create that community, highlight the interesting things that people are doing and that their companies are doing so, he started VentureFizz. It was a little bit of a side project for a couple of years for him and then in about 2012, 2013, he really started to ramp up his efforts with it. Tatiana Ivan: Before you were at VentureFizz, you worked for a lot of different companies such as Virgin Pulse, Lionbridge, Brafton. What made you decide to join VentureFizz? Kaite Rosa: I came into VentureFizz by way of Virgin Pulse, which is a health tech company out in Framingham and I was there for about two and a half years as senior marketing communications manager. I got to work on some really exciting projects there. I helped see the company through a rebrand. They were growing very rapidly and last May, they secured $93 million in funding. Tatiana Ivan: Wow. Kaite Rosa: It was really great. There were a lot of really exciting projects to work on and I learned a ton in a relatively short amount of time. I stayed on with the company for about six months thereafter, but I really missed that early stage growth opportunity aspect of working on a startup so, I connected with our founder, Keith Cline, and the role that I'm in now is really just like the perfect next step for me and it was really interesting to me to go back to more of my journalism roots, which is what I initially did professionally, and here we are.
