You are looking at such facets as the preparedness of cast/crew, equipment (ex. camera batteries), no random vehicles or people walking through the shot etc. Voiceover recording - - is the script finalized? - do you have talent already scheduled for this? - do you have a location with appropriate equipment to get the cleanest sound possible? - is the location appropriate for sound recording? For storyboarding, we point out why this is so important and how you can do this, even if you are not an artist. We talk about how you can plan out your transitions, communicate to anyone involved in the production easily and what are important actions to emphasize. How To Make an Eye-Catching eBook

How To Make an Eye-Catching eBook What is an eBook? Very obviously it is a version of a printed book that can be read on a computer or handheld device. Two of the most important factors you will need to think about before making an eBook is, the purpose and how can your target market gain access to it. Here are a few options for purpose (many of these can occur at the same time): • Sell to generate revenue • Build thought-leadership • Introduce your current clients to the core concepts of a new product or service you provide • A driver to get your target market onto your website • Have people sign-up for it in order to gain their email so you can start a conversation with them in the future, whether through a personal email or a newsletter. • Assist in turning prospects into leads • Driver to a specific portion of your website • Introduce your audience to something brand new to your industry that you can assist them with Topic: Even though the purpose greatly helps, it is also important to think about the following for your target market: • What are their wants? • What questions do they have about the services or products you provide? • What obstacles or pain-points do they face? • What words do they use to describe their obstacles or pain-points? • What and how does specific information impact them in a way that they are not aware of? • What are current trending industry topics? Engaging title that speaks to your audience: When it comes to an article, think of something that is written simply but yet engaging. It is something that hits on the topic of the eBook while invoking a specific emotional response that drives them to invest some time into engaging with your content. Outline: Start with putting in order the major aspects that create your selected topic. From there, think about how one point leads into the next. What information, within that selected aspect should be touched on and what is considered “too much information” for the goal of the eBook? Design: When it comes to your design, it is important that you think of your branding mixed with the subject matter. This includes the following elements being used: • Images (original or stock) • Colors • Font • Shapes • Negative space (empty space) Place appropriate CTAs within your eBook: Just like blogs, vlogs, and other content, you are looking to drive your audience to something specific. So what is the Call To Action that ties into your main topic and the reason for creating this eBook in the first place? Are you looking to: - Get them to engage in other content? - Drive them to contact you? - Have them sign-up or subscribe to something? - Have them try something new? Best of Our Interviews - Marketing Words of Wisdom

Thank you for listening to episode 27 of Branch out with Evin Charles Anderson. The past few weeks have been filled with some amazing guests, so Tatiana and I wanted to create a special for you all. We have taken the words of wisdom segment from each of our recent interviews and have compiled them all together for you. We have Dave Gerhardt of Drift and Tech In Boston, Kaite Rosa of VentureFizz, Dan Shure of Evolving SEO and Moz and finally Shawn LaVana Marketing Professional and writer for VentureFizz. Dave: I think the biggest thing to remember is that at the end of the day that is no marketing cure for sucking. What that means is that customer experience really is the new marketing. So if you have a product or service that people don’t genuinely love, no marketing tactic or campaign with save you from that. I would start with having an awesome product and an amazing team and then worry about the marketing tactics. Kaite: I am partnered with a high school student. When she was starting to enter her junior year and was thinking about a possible career path, she thought she knew where she wanted to go. I really encouraged her to have real meaningful conversations with people doing what she wanted to do. She thought she really wanted to become a personal trainer. We sat down and talked to someone who was a personal trainer. And we also sat down and talked with someone who was a nutrition professor. Her perception was completely flipped. So I think it is really important to sit down and have conversations with a broad scope of people in the industry you want to be in. It is also important to take a variety of opportunities to help expose you to different areas that you could go in. Dan: A lot of people want to jump into social or get into blogging but you have to set up the core product and services on your website. You need a strong foundation from the very beginning. So the mistake a lot of people make is they hire a web designer, they get a developer, they build the website, they launch it and then 3 months later they call me ask if I can put the SEO into the website. That really isn’t how it works. The best SEO is done from the beginning. The SEO is one of the first people involved doing keyword research, helping to determine the architecture of the website (what the pages are, the URLs, the hierarchy, the menus, the navigation). And especially when you are dealing with e-commerce. You want to look at that aspect of SEO from the very beginning. From beyond that, now you need great content. I am not saying blog articles; I’m talking about your core product and service content. Not only should that be optimized for search but also is it at least good for users. Does it help show what your product and services are. An episode (Experts On The Wire) people can listen to is Amy Harrison, who talks about copyrighting and about great things like umbrella terms, contrast and putting humor in your copy. Or you can look at UnBounce or ConverstionXL that talk about great copyrighting and CRO. Shawn: To crib on Ben Horowitz’ product market fit being everything…I was in an early stage company, PostWire, where my main task was – they were getting signals from 5 different areas that their product could be applicable to. I think that is one of the first things you need to do as an evolving company. Figure out where your product best fits, who it is solves problems for and what messages work for that. I think one of the other key things that comes up is the focus on the user experience. It used to be an afterthought but now people are hiring UI/UX people. Once you find your product market traction, sort that out as well. If you are making a product, make it a great interface. If it isn’t a product, make every engagement with a prospect or client delightful. Seek ways to make their lives better. More information about us: http://www.WaverleyKnobs.com/about

5 Mistakes That Could Ruin Your Marketing

5 Mistakes That Could Ruin Your Marketing Even the smallest mistake could topple all of your marketing efforts! Think about the story of Achilles or David and Goliath. In this episode, we speak on 5 mistakes that can be easily overlooked but leave a large negative impact. 1. Disrespecting a company's sales force We all get stressed and it can be easy to have something small set us off but it is so important that we stay calm and keep composure, especially when we are speaking with those that are not within our company. 2. Not sending out proper emails We are all on tight schedules but when it comes to communicating with people outside of the company, it is always important to send out or respond properly. 3.Accepting feedback professionally This seems like an obvious point but you would be surprised how many company reps do not know how to accept feedback professionally. No one wants to have their child be called ugly but if they were harassing the kids on the playground, wouldn't you want to know and correct that behavior? 4. Inconsistency Inconsistency of branding can tell multiple conflicting messaging to your audience. That confusion will lead to them being turned away from your company. It can show that a company does not focus in on precision or cuts corners. 5. Leaving out a creative team from your strategy As Paul Jankowski (Chief Strategist at New Heartland Group) stated in his Forbes article: "This is one of the best ways to ensure your brand never stands a chance." We have Kaite Rosa who is the Director of Marketing and Content at VentureFizz. If you haven't heard of VentureFizz, we'll definitely dive more into that, but let me tell you, they have some fantastic material if you are a startup tech company in Boston especially with their Talent on the Move series as well as their Driven profile series. Kaite, thank you for coming in and how are you doing today? Kaite Rosa: I'm doing great. How are you? Evin Anderson: Doing fantastic. Thank you. Now glad you can make it in and talk with us today. For people that again aren't familiar with VentureFizz, could you introduce the company as well as how you got involved? Kaite Rosa: VentureFizz is an online platform covering tech entrepreneurship and career inspiration focused entirely on companies here in Boston. We have one of the hottest job boards here in Boston with over 1,500 jobs for tech and startup companies and over 200 companies have a biz page with us, which is a place for them to not only feature their new roles, but also highlight their company culture. Evin Anderson: It's such a great way of connecting people with these startups. Do you know where the original concept first formulated from? Kaite Rosa: Sure. Our founder, Keith Cline, he started VentureFizz back in 2009. He in his previous life if you will was a recruiter for over I think nearly 20 years and he was working with all these really great interesting companies and finding out all these unique stories and meeting really innovative people, and wanted a place to like you said create that community, highlight the interesting things that people are doing and that their companies are doing so, he started VentureFizz. It was a little bit of a side project for a couple of years for him and then in about 2012, 2013, he really started to ramp up his efforts with it. Tatiana Ivan: Before you were at VentureFizz, you worked for a lot of different companies such as Virgin Pulse, Lionbridge, Brafton. What made you decide to join VentureFizz? Kaite Rosa: I came into VentureFizz by way of Virgin Pulse, which is a health tech company out in Framingham and I was there for about two and a half years as senior marketing communications manager. I got to work on some really exciting projects there. I helped see the company through a rebrand. They were growing very rapidly and last May, they secured $93 million in funding. Tatiana Ivan: Wow. Kaite Rosa: It was really great. There were a lot of really exciting projects to work on and I learned a ton in a relatively short amount of time. I stayed on with the company for about six months thereafter, but I really missed that early stage growth opportunity aspect of working on a startup so, I connected with our founder, Keith Cline, and the role that I'm in now is really just like the perfect next step for me and it was really interesting to me to go back to more of my journalism roots, which is what I initially did professionally, and here we are. We all hear the importance of social media and the term, “social selling”. Social media is a great way to share your messaging, engage your target market and assist in the relationship creation process. The biggest keys for a company to understand though are what social media platforms they should be utilizing and how to successfully utilize it to experience those benefits There is a large assortment to study-up on and understand such as: Facebook Instagram Pinterest Twitter LinkedIn YouTube / Vimeo Snapchat And honestly, there are still even more social media platforms (including industry specific social media platforms) that we could mention. During this episode of Branch-Out, we are going to breakdown a few of these major platforms, what industries should be utilizing them and how! Concerning Social Media, overall, it can have a multitude of benefits ranging from: ability to promote your business build customer relationships listen and get feedback manage your reputation online But you want to make sure you are picking the right platform(s). Lets start off with Facebook: Who is using this? Well as of August of 2015, the Pew Research Center came up with these numbers: 72% of online American adults use Facebook. The largest age group was 18-29, while not far behind are those ages 30-49. More women are using Facebook. The largest demographic is hispanic followed by White, Non-Hispanic and then Black, Non-Hispanic What about Pinterest? 31% of online adults use Pinterest with women dominating usage. 44% of online women use the site. Hispanic and White, Non-Hispanic seemed to be the heaviest users primarily around the age of 18 -29 with the second largest age group being from 30-49. The largest amount of users have attended some college while the 2nd largest group completed college. Just with this information already, we can see that there could be a great marketing opportunity for universities. We already know from past research that more women are going through higher education. Pinterest could be a great market for Universities/Colleges/Trade Schools. They could promote people getting back to school and taking the classes they want and need for success. While platforms like Facebook tend to pull in more of a Urban population, Pinterest pulls in a Suburban market with Rural following close behind. Ana, Evin and Tatiana go over the necessary visual and textual content that you need for an impactful YouTube channel. Whether you are a business or an individual, this is a must listen! Titles of Videos: - Direct Method vs. Magazine Article Method f you are not great at creating catchy titles, try these: https://www.portent.com/tools/title-maker http://www.title-generator.com/ Description Content: It gets overlooked by the video itself. A great description can be very important though as it not only tells a viewer what the video is about but also YouTube itself when compiling search results. Note: YouTube will only show around the first 157 characters of your description in its search snippets and Google, slightly less in its Universal Search results. Make this first part of your description as engaging, and informative as possible. Video Thumbnails: YouTube will give you an option of choosing from 3 different stills that it pulled from the video. This can be handy but sometimes it is not always the best. There is no guarantee that those photos will be something that best represents the point you are trying to get across or are something engaging enough to garner attention. If the 3 choices do not meet the needs of the video, you are able to add your own image. There are a few options you can do at this point. Examples of creating and uploading your own thumbnails: Ex. 1 - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Waverley+Knobs+Groundwork Ex. 2 - https://www.youtube.com/user/marieforleo Playlists: YouTube gives you the ability to create Playlists. The Lost Art of the Business Card and (How It Can Stay Relevant In the Digital-Age) Today we are going to give credit where credit is due to the lost art of the business card by talking about: - How your business card represents your brand - A few ways of making your business card leave the proper impact - How business cards can help you make the sales process easier - How the business card can stay relevant in the Digital-Age Business Card Brand Representation This involves several factors such as: - Type of font used - Color schemes - Typography of the textual information - Continuity to other digital and printed collateral Your choice of typography can speak volumes about your company’s style and philosophy. Just think about the stark difference between newspaper print and graffiti. Those typestyles denote very different stories and very different markets. Here are a few factors that makeup typography: - Kerning – spaces between letters - Alignment – Left, center or right aligned - Size - Secondary Font – accent font that can be used for elements like tag lines Business Cards And The Sales Process This may seem pretty obvious but to those of you who are just relying on LinkedIn, this one is for you. Business cards assist in exchanging information (you know… those little things like email and phone number). If you skip out on this process and just connect on LinkedIn, you are actually making your job harder. Not only does the person you’re speaking with not have your direct contact information but now you don’t have theirs either. Even though there’s an option for people to list their contact information in their LinkedIn profiles, many don’t. Also, any professional social seller will tell you that social media (like LinkedIn) is not for selling but for creating conversations in order to make a warm contact via phone or email. So even if you’re connected with them on LinkedIn, you will still need to get their direct contact information. Business Card Relevancy In The Digital-Age One easy tool that has been used on and off is the QR Code. You can easily create a free QR code online and tie it into your design on your business card. This way, not only does a connection have your direct contact information but they can scan the QR code (via a multitude of free scanning apps) which can take them directly to your website or even LinkedIn profile. Also, if you want to avoid scanning a QR code all together, there are business cards with built-in NFC technology. “NFC is a form of wireless communication that allows the flow of information between two devices.” All current Smart phones have an option to turn on NFC (an evolution from RFID). With these types of business cards, an NFC chip is built into your business card and you can program it to lead the individual scanning the card to anywhere you want. It could automatically bring up your website; it could bring up directions on how to get to your location or even to bring up your app. Whether it is about telling your brand, assisting in making an easier sales process or connecting to digital collateral, business cards still have an impact; it is just about how you use it. Just like any other tool, if you don’t use it correctly or rarely, you will never see the benefits of it. How To Gain The Attention Of The Millennial Market For Hotels

Alex and Evin discuss some reasons why hotels may be seeing booking abandonment on their websites. We know guests are looking for easily accessible information, stress free booking, and honesty/transparency. Can hotel video production help ease the guest experience? We all have gone to a hotel and been disappointed by a misleading location or photos that look nothing like the real thing. Honesty is more important today than ever. Guests are very skeptical as well as overburdened with options. Those that provide the most transparent and easily accessible information are seen as much more trustworthy. If hotels recognize the need for guests to have an enjoyable booking experience, they must embrace creating content on their website centered on what the guest wants to find out. If not, that shows that the hotel cares more about themselves than creating an easier guest experience! Elements Of Storytelling For Company Videos

What do Shakespeare, Steinbeck, and Spielberg have in common? Well, aside from the obvious alliteration of their names, these men are all considered to be great storytellers. Regardless of the platform – on stage, print, or screen – they, like so many other writers, have captured the attention of audiences around the world through engaging stories. In his book The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories, Christopher Booker asserts that nearly every story ever written can be broken down into one of seven fundamental narratives. It may seem depressing at first but that story you’ve worked so hard on has been told before and will be told again. Fret not! More information about us: http://www.WaverleyKnobs.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/branchoutpodcast https://www.facebook.com/waverleyknobs Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/waverleyknobs Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/waverleyknobs [Sample Transcription of Episode:] Alex: My name is Alex. Anna: And, I’m Anna. Alex: And, today, we’re going to be talking about elements of storytelling you should be using when making a company video. But, before we jump into the tips, we first need to make sure that you know your story. Anna: Everybody has a story including businesses and it’s more important today than ever to convey your story because I don’t know about you but I feel like my generation has grown up mistrusting a lot of corporations, a lot of businesses so it’s important to know who you are and convey that to your audience. Stories come in many forms for businesses whether you have a story behind the product you’re selling, the services you’re providing, the information you’re offering, it can span a whole variety of things; so, it’s important to know who you are and who your demographic is. So, Alex, why is video the best way to tell your story? Alex: Great question. You may be thinking there’s a million ways to tell a story. You can do an article, a blog, photographs; but, why is video best? Video appeals to the senses. You know, it’s a way of mixing the images, the sound and everything altogether to engage people. You want to grab people’s attention and you want to hold it and videos do that better than anything else. It’s also a way of drumming up emotions. You know, videos make us feel things. It’s either happy, sad, excited, scared, who knows; but, it’s a great way of, you know, making those emotions come out in people that you get better than, you know, say an article or a picture and the real key is to make sure that those emotions that people are feeling are the emotions you want them to feel in the video. Without further adieu, let’s jump into Tip #1. Anna: There are many techniques used in film and we’re going to take some inspiration from one of our recent favorites and old favorites, Star Wars! So, stories don’t have to be in chronological order. Often, starting in the middle of your story is the most engaging and then you can go into the intro and then conclusion. Event videos are one of the best ways to use this technique and it’s actually called In Media Res. Instead of showing like setting up and, you know, the whole crew putting the plates and all that stuff down to your film footage of the event itself, you’re seeing the people, the music, the energy that the event brings. It’s more engaging to actually see the event itself. [Listen to the entire episode for more and subscribe, today!]

2015 In Review - Video Trends

2015 was the year of video but it was still underutilized! Catch up on all of the trends in corporate video production from 2015 and see how you can apply them into the new year! Evin and Alex dive into the trends as why as why they even became trends in the first place. The three core concepts are focused in on Mobile Devices, Interactiveness and Drones. 1. 2015 was a big year for mobile device videos in more ways than one. As people shifted from large screens to pocket-sized, videos became shorter and more engaging. Businesses spent more money on mobile video advertisements this year and show no signs of slowing. The recording capabilities of smart-phones also improved in 2015 – manual focus, image-stabilization and other options made mobile devices a great camera that happened to have a phone attached. Our short film, shot on the LG V10 in low light, is a prime example of mobile device movie-making. (The Heist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKD3HwCrZVM) 2. People love videos because they offer an escape from reality. Interactive videos further that feeling by putting the audience inside the film and were quite popular in 2015. Instead of skipping advertisements, visitors are drawn to these videos because they offer an experience, like allowing visitors to choose their own ending. Target took full advantage of this trend and technologies available when they created an interactive video for Halloween this year. 3. There’s no better way to break the monotony of ground-level productions than by moving to the sky. Easier access to drones raised the bar – literally – enabling filmmakers to capture beautiful aerials shots like never before. As with any new technology, there comes a bit of a learning curve, but drones are excellent tools for creating a unique video. These video trends are really starting to soar!
