Izzy offers some next-level insight into both his time with the Yankees and Blue Jays, with the kind of stories and lessons that make you understand the value he brings to an organization. There was also that time he broke up a perfect game by singling off CEO Joe (Kelly). Isiah is a great guy to listen to and get to know. Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning open Wednesday's show recapping the Raptors' disappointing loss to the Knicks in the NBA Cup quarterfinals. They assess what the game revealed about the Raptors' place in the Eastern Conference, the impact of injuries to RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, concerns around Jakob Poeltl, and Brandon Ingram's ongoing inconsistencies. They also outline what they hope to see from the Raptors when they return to action on Monday. The boys then shift to Bobby McMann's one-game suspension for a high stick and whether it was justified. After the break, they react to Dylan Cease's introduction by the Blue Jays and what his comments signal for the organization. They examine John Schneider's remarks about IKF and his lead at third in Game 7 of the World Series, raising questions about coaching accountability. The hour wraps with discussion about Edwin Díaz signing with the Dodgers, Kyle Schwarber returning to the Phillies, and the broader implications for the free agent market, before celebrating Shai Gilgeous-Alexander winning the Northern Star Award. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
BT & Sal ignite a heated conversation around the baseball offseason and the NBA's failing regular season. They debate the hypothetical nightmare of Pete Alonso landing with the Yankees, discussing whether adding the Polar Bear's power is the "restructuring" the Bombers need (trading Stanton and IKF) or just a power overdose. The discussion pivots to the Tigers' Tarik Skubal, where Sal unleashes a scorching critique of the front office executive who believes Skubal's trade value will be the same at the deadline as it is now. The hosts call the strategy "moronic," citing the massive risk of injury (Cole, Alcantara) and the loss of full-season control. Finally, they tackle the NBA's lack of urgency, with BT slamming the regular season as "largely unwatchable" due to the constant rest days and the compromised competition. They yearn for the competitive spirit of 90s basketball and explore radical solutions (like split seasons) to make the games matter again.
After covering the Blue Jays' incredible postseason run, capped by one of the most compelling World Series ever played, Arden and Ben reconvene to compare notes. The latest SMQBs episode opened with a poignant and heartfelt tribute to "The Hen," Laura, Rooster's wife. The crew shared personal stories that celebrated her genuine kindness, her ability to make everyone feel special, and her spirit as a dedicated Commanders and F1 fan, making it a difficult but necessary dedication to her memory. She will be missed. Once into the sports talk, the World Series immediately took center stage, with the crew dissecting the razor-thin margins of Game Seven. The most memorable moment wasn't a highlight-reel catch or home run, but the infamous "deciding gaffe" by IKF, the Blue Jays runner on third base. His minimal lead led to him being thrown out at the plate "by a millimeter" to end a scoring threat, a blunder the panel noted was the critical error that ultimately decided the championship. The drama in the NBA, with House bringing up Victor Wembanyama for his "Bring Him to the Bar" pick. The discussion centered on the rookie's astonishing all-around production, particularly his ability to impact the game from inside the paint, beyond the arc, and on the defensive end. The guys agreed that his historic start suggests a talent level that could eventually eclipse many of the league's all-time greats. To hear the full tributes, the complete sports debates, and all the Plaxico picks, be sure to listen to SMQBs Episode 240!

Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker reflect on the Toronto Blue Jays' Game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, falling short of a World Series title. They break down the game, including Jeff Hoffman giving up a game-tying home run to the Dodgers' nine-hole hitter and Isiah Kiner-Falefa's base-running in the ninth inning. Then, they share positive takeaways from the Jays' run that they can build on in 2026, which aspects of the team may regress, and whether resigning Bo Bichette will be a priority in the offseason. Later, Blue Jays Central analyst Caleb Joseph (31:56) weighs in on IKF's base-running, silver linings from the Jays' loss, and the next step for Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
It's the day after the day after and the Blue Jays' loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series is still a heartbreaking gut punch. We throw open the Monday Mailbag at deepleftfield@thestar.ca to share your thoughts, feelings and questions about the game, the series and the season as a whole and hear from a wide range of listeners, from the zen-like appreciation of the Jays' magical year to the anger and frustration over opportunities missed by a team that had a championship within its grasp. And why did IKF slide? Plus, my thoughts on the grave injustice of Gold Gloves denied to Ernie Clement and Alejandro Kirk. Guests: Blue Jays infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, catcher Tyler Heineman The Blue Jays had a rare losing week, but still carried a three-game lead in the American League East into Thursday's rubber match against the AL West-leading Houston Astros. Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Tyler Heineman both played huge roles in the Jays securing the first game of the series, and they both join us this week in Deep Left Field. Kiner-Falefa, signed to a two-year deal before last season, traded to Pittsburgh at the 2024 trade deadline and re-acquired on waivers just before the September 1 playoff eligibility deadline, talks about how he fell in love with Toronto years ago and how happy he is to be rejoining the team for the stretch drive. With Bo Bichette sidelined with a knee injury, IKF is going to play a greater role than anticipated and he discusses that, as well as how much he loves hitting in Toronto. Heineman couldn't have picked a better time to have a career year. As Alejandro Kirk's back-up, he is currently posting career highs in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs and even stolen bases. He's also throwing out base stealers at a higher rate than he ever has before. Tuesday night he picked up the first walk-off of his career. All that plus a look back at The Week That Was and your emails on Episode 278 of Deep Left Field!
WHERE TO BEGIN!! These last two weeks have given us plenty of reasons to scream, positively and negatively...let's get into it. Sonny throws out the first pitch, MLB launches a new Korean-exclusive channel with MC Johnny Suh of NCT17, and a new documentary about MLB's relationship with Japan called DIAMOND DIPLOMACY will be available soon! In position player news, CC Sabathia has words for Anthony Volpe's haters, IKF returns to the Blue Jays and Kim Ha Seong is already thriving at his new home in Atlanta, Bo Bichette is still on an offensive tear, and Lee Jung Hoo's teammates finally give him a taste of his own walk off celebration. Pitching was a wild ride: Jonah Tong debuts in a huge way, Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets one out away from a no hitter...and then the Dodgers lose the whole game, Yu Darvish lets Fernando Tatis Jr. know how he feels, Bryan Woo does not make it through the 6th for the first time all year, and Kodai Senga is sent down to triple A. And lastly, in Ohtani talk - his casual 48 home runs put him in striking distance of another record, he gets his first W as a Dodger, and the comment section thirsts...for him to hit them in the nuts????
Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning open hour two with a quick reset on the Jays' extra-inning win, what Bo Bichette's IL stint means now, and whether it offers a potential glimpse of next season without him. They highlight the infield plan: Ernie Clement at short, IKF in the mix, and Andrés Giménez staying at second, before checking in on Shane Bieber's outing and Anthony Santander's delayed rehab. Later, the guys sort through the new details on Kawhi Leonard and Uncle Dennis's 2019 asking price and whether it rewrites the Raptors' story. After the break, MLB Network's Jon Morosi (28:13) joins to discuss Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doing the little and big things, Bieber's player option versus free agency, and what Bo's injury means for the Jays' postseason chances. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.

The Pirates rallied late in Boston to beat the Red Sox 4–2, spoiling rookie Payton Tolle's debut. Neil and DiNardo break down the marquee matchup of Paul Skenes vs. Tolle: Skenes didn't have his very best but stayed icy—6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 6 K on 95 pitches—working through some shaky defense (rough night for IKF, and a drop in CF) and a Roman Anthony homer. Andrew McCutchen carried the offense (3-for-3, BB, two doubles) with the go-ahead two-run double, while Nick Gonzales chipped in two hits. They also dive into Henry Davis' night (tough at-bats but stellar behind the plate, nabbed a runner), and a lights-out bullpen trio: Dauri Moreta's nine-pitch seventh, Isaac Mattson continuing his breakout (now down to a 1.95 ERA), and Dennis “Mr. Efficient” Santana striking out two to close (ERA down around 2.33). Plus: quick talk on waiver buzz (IKF, Tommy Pham). Like, comment, and subscribe for more Pirates postgames. Powered by Primanti Bros—let's go Bucs! Andrew Heaney cost the Pirates the game yesterday. We don't understand why the GM kept Tommy Pham, IKF, and Heaney. Bubba Chandler has some AJ Burnett in him. Mark Kaboly tweeted out a gif saying Khan, but what does Kaboly know? Bengals give Trey Hendrickson a $16 million raise but is still going to be a free agent next year.
Hour 3 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: We don't understand why the GM kept Tommy Pham, IKF, and Heaney. Bubba Chandler has some AJ Burnett in him. Mark Kaboly tweeted out a gif saying Khan, but what does Kaboly know? Bengals give Trey Hendrickson a $16 million raise but is still going to be a free agent next year. We are fascinated by Bill Belichick in North Carolina and it's the most hyped season in UNC history. Indiana plays a weak non-conference. We discuss Penn State's chances in the Big Ten and if they can win a national championship.
The title sums it up this week, but we're still gonna dive deep! First, Asians in Futbol news with the annoucement of Son Heung-min's signing with LAFC (not confirmed as of recording time but has since been made official!), The Angels and Dodgers pull out all the stops for Japanese celebrations, and Choo Shin Soo becomes HOF eligible next year.As for the trade deadline, Steven Kwan did NOT move, much to the chagrin of...the Dodgers, of course. Kenta Maeda is released by the Cubs, but their loss means DAAAAAAAA YANKEES...win?! And a few other moves from earlier in the summer. In position player news, Volpe's hot! Bo's hot! Higgy's hot! Yeli's hot! IKF's hot! Tommy Pham's hot! Lee Jung Hoo is trying to do his best with what he's got in the moment! And Tommy Edman and Kim Hyeseong need to get well soon!Over in pitching, PUT SOME RESPECT ON YU DARVISH'S NAME! We're talking to you, Yu Darvish! He keeps it humble while breaking yet another record for a Japanese-born pitcher, Sean Manaea is feeling good, Imanaga and Yamamoto are cruising, and Riley O'Brien is on fire.Lastly, in Ohtani news, his last start may not have gone to plan, but he just cranks up the dial in the other direction.
NS9 Postgame Show Powered by Primanti Bros. Jack Suwinski stole the show at PNC Park, blasting a clutch 2-run homer in the 7th to spark a Pirates comeback and then scoring the game-winning run in a thrilling 5-4 walk-off over the Giants. From Johan Oviedo's long-awaited return to the mound, to big bullpen performances from Johan Ramirez, Ryan Borucki, and Dauri Moreta, the Bucs pieced it together and got it done. Spencer Horwitz kept swinging a hot bat, while late-game heroics from Joey Bart and IKF sealed the deal — and yes, we're giving away sandwiches. Tyler and Ryan break down all the key moments, from Suwinski's bounce-back night to Oviedo's rust, plus why the bottom of the order came up huge. IKF, Pham, and Andrew Heaney are still here and veteran leadership was credited again. Paul Skenes said he hopes the Pirates trades line up the team to acquire bats in the offseason. Noah says the Pirates have a top-5 grade on the catcher they acquired. It's hard to read why the GM would stay, but the moves he made tell Noah the GM is going to make the next wave of moves.
Andrew Heaney, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Tommy Pham are still here and will be free agents after the year. IKF has five extra base hits since the beginning of June. Will Paul Skenes speak out to the Pirates with his frustrations?
Hour 3 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Jeff was surprised by the Pirates deadline. The GM didn't trade Andrew Heaney, Tommy Pham, and IKF. This doesn't open up opportunities for younger players. The Pirates gave Bailey Falter away, it seems. Madden ranks the Steelers as the No. 1 defense. Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn says there is something about Jalen Ramsey that is sparking the defense.
Hour 4 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Bob wasn't surprised by who the Pirates traded and David Bednar took pictures in the stadium before their roadtrip. Bob thinks trading Ke'Bryan Hayes opens the door for the Pirates to sign someone in the offseason. Andrew Heaney, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Tommy Pham are still here and will be free agents after the year. IKF has five extra base hits since the beginning of June. Will Paul Skenes speak out to the Pirates with his frustrations?
Jeff was surprised by the Pirates deadline. The GM didn't trade Andrew Heaney, Tommy Pham, and IKF. This doesn't open up opportunities for younger players. The Pirates gave Bailey Falter away.
Pirates saved roughly $20 million with the Bednar and Hayes trades. Jeff Passan loves the Bednar trade for the Pirates. Donny Football said on Twitter that it's incredible how bad Ben Cherington is at his job. Mullsy thinks the deal was below average for Ben Cherington. Poni says that one of the pros of the trade is that Flores has been productive in the minors. The Bednar trade does not measure up when compared to other deals. A caller calls for Ben Cherington to be fired now. An insider on Twitter said that the Bednar return was light in terms of the reliever market. We still don't have a Tommy Pham or IKF trade with 100 minutes until the trade deadline. A caller says that the Pirates won't reinvest the money they freed up. Poni and Mullsy both tweeted out polls asking if fans liked the Bednar trade, and both polls resulted in about 85% no. A caller is happy that Bednar got traded because he wants him to go win a World Series. Poni mentions that the Pirates never have a hard time finding a good closer. However, that was usually the case when Huntington was the GM. The Pirates traded Joe Musgrove to the Padres for a guy that recently retired from baseball, among two others that were not good. They also got Endy Rodriguez from the Mets in that deal. A caller says he likes Rafael Flores more because he plays first base as well as catcher. Another caller says that the Bednar trade made him buy Phillies hats for him and his wife and become a Phillies fan. Philip Rivers became a grandfather today.
The trade deadline is four hours away and scuttlebutt is abound. Jon Morosi can speak 6 different languages. Mason Miller got traded for a king's ransom, so is it a given that David Bednar will get traded before the show's over? Chris says Ben Cherington is an “ignoramous”. Poni wants to open up the phones, but the only guy on the line is someone labeled “DO NOT ANSWER, GUY KEEPS CALLING”. A caller badly messes up IKF's name. Chris praises Intern Jack, but takes a shot at me. How much faith should we have in Cherington at this deadline? Chris doesn't know if Bednar will ever be as good as he is now. A caller says he would rather give up Bubba Chandler over Bednar. What? Poni has heard a rumor that the Rangers are interested in Andrew McCutchen, but Pittsburgh has said no go. Jason Mackey joins the show to talk about a potential Cutch trade, what he expects to happen with Bednar, who's making the calls behind-the-scenes on trades, and reaction to
North Shore Nine Postgame Show Powered by Primanti Brothers. The Pirates return from the All-Star break with… that performance. Tyler and Doug break down the brutal 10-1 loss to the White Sox—aka the second-worst team in baseball—on a night where Bailey Falter faltered, the offense was lifeless, and Joey Bart couldn't catch a break (or a strike). We vent about the total lack of energy, question the Pirates' catcher situation, and give a well-earned tip of the cap to Isaac Mattson for showing actual heart. We also touch on Oneil Cruz's solid night, IKF doing IKF things, and how many more days of this roster we really have left before the trade deadline changes everything.
Hour 2 with Joe Starkey: . Poni was told an NFC West team reached out about trading for T.J. Watt and the Steelers said thanks but no thanks. Ryan Clark thinks Tomlin needs his Andy Reid run somewhere else. Would you trade Mitch Keller, Ke'Bryan Hayes, and IKF for Spencer Jones? Joe and Austin go back and forth on a deal and how valuable Mitch Keller is.
Jeff Hathhorn looks back to the Pirates' July trades over the last 10 years. There are a lot of bad ones. They've only hit on a few deals like IKF, Colin Holderman, Bailey Falter, and Oneil Cruz. There are a lot of forgettable trades. MLB could be looking at a work stoppage.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa is hitting.273 and can help a contender. It wouldn't surprise Jason if he's traded. Who should play shortstop when IKF is traded? Jason would try Joey Bart at first base and play Nick Gonzales at short.
Hour 1 with Jason Mackey: What will the Pirates do at the deadline? Should the Penguins go on a full-on rebuild? Jason wants them to win in the next year or two but Austin thinks they're already into a full rebuild. Who are your top 5 athletes of the past 25 years? Who should play shortstop when IKF is traded? Jason would try Bart at first base and play Gonzales at short.
Dan would like to see the Pirates re-sign IKF, but we all think he will be traded. Dan is disappointed in Oneil Cruz that he's not taking advantage of the opportunity to be one of the faces of the game. Dan called it "a public embarrassment" by benching Cruz in the game and that the Pirates need to do something to help Oneil Cruz figure it out.
Should Paul Skenes hit? Oneil Cruz's power numbers are down and isn't making enough hard contact. Michael wouldn't be surprised if they move Cruz down the order for a time. Michael thinks Ke'Bryan Hayes has been in-between hitting the ball out in front or being more like IKF making good contact.
On his weekly mailbag episode, Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers readers' questions, leading with if manager Don Kelly's recent success will save GM Ben Cherington from being fired. Plus, is it time to trade IKF while his stock is high? And when might we see Jack Suwinski back in Pittsburgh?
