The North sends its demands to King's Landing, knowing full well they won't be accepted. News arrives of various setbacks. Cat determines to solicit help from King Renly Baratheon. Mackelly and Simon consider what Robb's next move should be. Chapter Review: Robb reads his demands of Cersei to her cousin Cleos Frey. He's to take them to her and return with her reply. They include the return of all prisoners, delivery of 10 highborn Lannisters as hostages, concession that the North and the Riverlands are now their own kingdom. In return, all the prisoners taken by the north will be freed, with one golden exception: Jamie. Bereaved Rickard Karstark doesn't even stick around to listen. Cat tells Robb that he did well, but things aren't going great. The Riverlands lords are dispersing to defend their homes against Tywin's raiding parties. The main army is camped at Riverrun with no clear idea of a next step. Clamor is rising for an attack on Harrenhal, but that will cost lives and won't be easy. Robb wants Cat to go home to Bran and Rickon. She says she wants to stay with her father. Later with her uncle Brynden, Cat learns that the Lannisters are building a new army in the West, which threatens to trap Robb in a pincer. They decide that the best way forward is to lure Tywin out of Harrenhal, but he's no Edmure. The only way to make that happen would be to create a new threat that he couldn't ignore. Cat determines to travel south and beseech King Renly to come into the theatre and draw Tywin into action. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Cat and company arrive in Riverrun to find Lord Hoster Tully on his deathbed. With both Baratheon brothers vying to take the throne from their nephew, the Northern lords don't know who to support. The Greatjohn Umber has a creative solution, and declares Robb the King in the North to general approval. The boys dip their lances and consider bending the knee. Chapter Review: Catelyn re-enters Riverrun, where she grew up, for the first time in years. She's escorted to her father's rooms by her brother Edmure, recently freed from captivity in Jamie Lannister's host. Lord Hoster is near death but is glad to receive Cat. He's less thrilled to hear that his brother has come home. The old guy still has smouldering animosity for Brynden, and a fondness for his first grandson Robb. Cat finds Robb praying with the northern lords in the Godswood, where she played as a child. He's too busy to see his grandpa, as news has arrived that Renly Baratheon has wed Margery Tyrell and claimed the Iron Throne. With Tywin Lannister retreating to Harrenhal, the path forward for the northern army is not clear. Stannis has the better claim, but Renly has more (i.e., some) charisma. When it feels like the discussion is going, nowhere the GreatJohn Umber rises and dismisses all these southern kings, they mean nothing to him. The only king he'd follow is Robb Stark: the King in the North. All agree. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Robb Stark - Eldest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Wife of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Hoster Tully - Lord of Riverrun. Father to Catelyn Stark, Edmure Tully, and Lysa Arryn. Old and in poor health. Edmure Tully - Heir to Riverrun. Brother to Catelyn Stark. Brynden “Blackfish” Tully - Brother of Hoster Tully, uncle to Catelyn Stark. Formerly Knight of the Gate in the Vale. Theon Greyjoy - Ward and hostage of Eddard Stark. Only surviving son of Balon Greyjoy, and heir to the Iron Islands. Lord John “The Greatjohn” Umber - Lord of Last Hearth - huge. Lost two fingers to Grey Wind, now fiercely loyal to Robb Stark. Jamie Lannister - Member of the royal Kingsguard. Twin brother to queen Cersei and older brother to Tyrion. Nicknamed the "Kingslayer" for killing King Aerys Targaryen. Stannis Baratheon - Eldest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. At Dragonstone. Renly Baratheon - Youngest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. Recently married to Margery Tyrell and claimant to the Iron Throne. Riverrun - Capital of the Riverlands, seat of House Tully. Support the podcast. Buy a bit of merch from our store. We are reaching the endzone, and it shows in today's monster episode. We begin with heading back to Riverrun and saying hi to Brynden, Edmure, and Jaime's dark side. Cersei completely outdoes him as she practices her baseball swing with a lute. Then we get back to the goodbyes as we rejoin the Dornish plot atop the Spear Tower before sliding back down from the Eyrie to the ground below as the plan for Sansa's future, the one that includes poisoning a kid and basically selling her off, shapes the future. Today's chapters are: - Jaime VI - Cersei IX - The Princess In The Tower/ Arianne II - Alayne II/ Sansa III Step aboard the Isle for talk of the relationship between two famous knights who hate eachother, for nothing short of evil madness down in the black cells, for me trying to pronounce 'Ser Shadrich' again, and most importantly how Doran Martell's philosophy is actually the same message as Brienne VII: protect the innocents, whatever that requires of you as we tie this whole book together and look to the horizon...to see dragons coming straight for us. "Tell your man to step aside or there will be violence." says Lancel Lannister. Cersei Lannister replies "I choose violence." Season 6 and “A Dance With Dragons” conclude in spectacular fashion as we evaluate episodes 8, 9 & 10. Brienne and Jaime Lannister lay eyes on each other for the first time since Jaime gave her his sword to find and protect Sansa Stark, King Tommen outlaws Trial By Combat and Brynden the Blackfish refuses to give up Riverrun. Over in Essos, the Masters of Astapor and Yunkai take advantage of Daenerys' absence and launch an all out assault on Meereen. At Riverrun a common foot soldier has to make a choice to either take commands from the man who reformed their army and took back Riverrun from the Frey's, or to take commands from the rightful Lord of Riverrun with a proverbial knife to his throat. Will he make the right choice? The Hound gets his revenge on the strangers who butchered the villagers he had been staying with and meets up with some familiar faces. In Bravos, the Waif corners Arya to kill her once and for all, but only one is accustomed to fighting in the pitch black. Jaquen H'ghar follows the blood trail to the Hall of Faces and makes a shocking discovery as to who's face has been added to the Hall. He turns to Arya and says "Finally a girl is no one." Arya replies "A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell and I'm going home." Back in Meereen, Daenerys returns to her city being under attack and has vengeance on her mind. "I will crucify the masters, I will set their fleets afire, kill every last one of their soldiers and return their cities to the dirt." she declares while getting the debrief from Tyrion. Tyrion talks her down and to do it his way. They meet with the Masters and there is a misunderstanding as to whom is surrendering. Daenerys tells the Masters "We obviously didn't communicate clearly, we're here to discuss your surrender not mine." before taking flight with Drogon and destroying the Masters fleet and armies. At Winterfell, there is a parlay between the Northern houses that have sided with the Ramsay Bolton and the Northern houses/Wildlings that have sided with Jon Snow. Ramsay chides Jon and tells him "There's no need for a battle, get off your horse and kneel." to which Jon replies "You're right, there's no need for a battle, thousands of men don't need to die. Only one of us. Let's end this the old way, you against me." Ramsay doesn't take the bait and tells Jon "I keep hearing stories about you bastard, the way the people in the North talk about you, you're the greatest swordsman that ever walked. Maybe you are that good. Maybe not. I don't know if I'd beat you, but I know my army will beat yours." Jon returns the verbal spar "Aye you have the number, but will your men want to fight for you when they hear you wouldn't fight for them" which draws Ramsays ire to Jon's satisfaction. With Meereen back under control, Yara and Theon attempt to make a pact with Daenerys for the Iron Islands. Rickon Stark runs for his life in vain, the Battle of the Bastards commences. Jon receives aid from an unsuspecting ally. Ramsay's story comes full circle. In Kings Landing, the High Sparrow and others prepare for Cersei and Loras' trial. King Tommen tries to attend but his way is barred by Ser Gregor. Margaery tries to convince the High Sparrow something is wrong, but his arrogance leads them to a fiery surprise. Tommen finds out what happened and takes his own life. The Frey's have a banquet feast celebrating the retaking Riverrun with the Lannister army and Jaime openly questions Walder Frey's importance to his face. Sam arrives at the Citadel and is permitted access to the Library. Ser Davos in Winterfell confronts Melisandre about Shireen's fate in an emotional explosion and Daario Naharis learns that he will not be joining Daenerys and her army to Westeros. Arya exacts her revenge on the Frey's for the Red Wedding as things start to shift in the Stark's favor finally. Bran received safe passage to the Wall from a long lost undead Uncle and we learn there is magic in the Wall that keep the army of the dead at bay. Bran goes into a vision and we learn the truth of a certain "bastard". while Jon Snow holds a meeting in the great hall of Winterfell where the Northern houses bestow the same title upon him as they did Robb Stark. With all members of the royal family dead in Kings Landing except one, she takes the crown for herself and Daenerys is finally on her way to accomplish what she has set out to do since Season 1. Join us for this bombshell conclusion of Season 6 as the Riddikulus Crew breaks down the key points, raises questions and debates topics. As Tyrion tells Daenerys, "You're in the great game now, and the great game is terrifying."
"A girl has been given a second chance, there will not be a third." says Jaquen H'ghar to Arya as we kick off the continuation of Season 6 Game of Thrones Episodes 5, 6 & 7. In the lair of the Three-Eyed Raven, we learn about how the Night King was created. Over in the Iron Islands there is a Kingsmoot for the Salt Throne and Euron Greyjoy pulls off the upset. Meanwhile, Jorah Mormont reveals his greyscale to Daenerys which means his certain death and as he bids her farewell to Daenerys, she tells him "Do not walk away from your queen, Jorah the Andal. You have not been dismissed." at last forgiving him for his betrayal. Bran goes behind the Three-Eyed Raven's back and enters a vision on his own, only to realize his folly too late as the Night King is able to grab him by the wrist in the vision, marking him. The Three-Eyed Raven awakens and knows what has just happened and tell Bran that he must now become the new Three-Eyed Raven because the magic of the lair will no longer keep the Night King out since he marked Bran. Bran asks the Three-Eyed Raven if he is even ready to take on this task, the Three-Eyed Raven tells him no. At Castle Black, Jon Snow is preparing with his war council for the upcoming battle against Ramsay Bolton and the other houses of the North. They realize they are vastly outnumbered so Sansa sends Brienne to Riverrun to request assistance from her uncle Brynden the Blackfish. The Night King arrives at the lair and Meera, Hodor and Bran have to escape with some help from Summer and Leaf. Is it going to be enough though? It will all come down to someone holding a door closed against the many wights. As we cruise into Episode 6, we get an interesting reunion with a certain familiar First Ranger that we haven't seen since Season 1. Sam and Gilly meet Sam's family at Horn Hill which goes about as good as you could expect, Arya screws up her second chance with the faceless men and the High Sparrow outsmarts Cersei, Olenna and Jaime Lannister once more. Brynden the Blackfish has retaken Riverrun and Walder Frey learns of this from his sons and then commands them to retake it using a certain hostage. On the road back to Mereen, Daenerys finds Dragon and mounts him while giving a speech to her new Khalasar. She says, "“Ei khal fin thir nak haan okhe sen dothrakhqoy alo ji qisi mae m’auijazeri ath dineur mae vas ma anha vos khal. Anha vo vakkan sen dothrakhqoy. Anha okkak el yeri. Anha qafak asqoy yeroa, majin yeri m’athiri m’athiri m’ adrivoe ven qoy qoyi m’adothrae ami m’aulijezeri anna athzhowakaroon. Aha aquafak san ale yeroa ei khaloon ray wad khaasaroon mae! Hash yeri m’ayyeyaan?!” (Every khal who ever lived chose three Bloodriders to fight beside him and guard his way. I am not a Khal. I will not choose three Bloodriders. I choose you all. I ask your oath, that you will live and die as blood of my blood; riding at my side to keep me safe from harm. I will ask more of you than any Khal has ever asked from a Khalasar! Will you ride the wooden horses across the Black Salt Sea? Will you kill my enemies in their iron suits and tear down their stone houses? Will you give me the Seven Kingdoms? The gift that Khal Drogo promised me before the mother of mountains as the stars looked down in witness? Are you with me now and always?!) of which she receives a resounding chorus of approval. Now moving into Episode 7, one of our favorite dirty dogs happens to be alive! Jon Snow and Tormund talk the wildlings into fighting with them against the Boltons to retake Winterfell. Jaime Lannister has to come to the Frey's aid with the Lannister army to take over the siege of Riverrun. Now with the wildings secured, Jon Snow, Sansa and Ser Davos take on the grueling task of trying to convince the other Northern houses to fight for them. In Bravos, Arya is gravely wounded from the waif and she may succumb to her wounds as nobody will help her. Meanwhile, The Hound loses the only friends he had and he's ready for revenge. Join the Riddikulus Crew for part 3 on the continuous winding river that is Season 6 of Game of Thrones. This season's breakdown is not for the faint of heart as we will conclude it's evaluation in 4 parts! In the words of Ser Davos "The real war isn't between a few squabbling houses, it's between the living and the dead. And make no mistake, the dead are coming."
The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Catelyn Stark and her entourage finally arrive, battered and beaten, at the Vale. Cat meets some family. One is a positive reunion. The other not so much. We tell you all about it, give you some insights, and ponder if Rickon might be better suited to look after Robert than Lysa. Chapter Review: Cat and her travel companions make their way through the Vale, from the Bloody Gate to the Gates of the Moon, and then Cat goes sky high to reach the Eyrie. She's accompanied along the way by her uncle Brynden Blackfish Tully. She tells Brynden about everything that has happened since Bran's fall. Brynden tells Cat that the Vale is angry and that her sister Lysa isn't the same girl Cat knew. He also worries that Cat has done the one thing Lysa doesn't want: bring the Lannisters to the Vale. When the party reaches the Gates of the Moon, Cat is summoned to go the remaining way to the Eyrie alone. When she finally reaches the castle, her sister Lysa seems so happy to see her, that is until the two are alone. As Brynden surmised, Lysa is angry that Cat brought Tyrion here, possibly dragging them into a war with the Lannisters. Cat meets her nephew, little Robert Arryn, who is small, sickly, and surprisingly attached to his mother. As Cat and Lysa argue, Robert asks about making Tyrion fly. It's a big ole bumper episode! In the longest Scraps and Scrolls ever we see the great mutiny of the Night's Watch, a duel with a big fire sword wielded by a man in an eye-patch, wave goodbye to Hoster Tully, watch Davos Seaworth win the social mobility championship belt, and take a bath in Harrenhal. There is A LOT to talk about. Our chapters today: - Samwell II - Arya VI - Catelyn IV - Davos IV - Jaime V All that plus a Robb vs Tywin Pair Pick, some talk on big goings on out in the fandom, Stannis being just a bit awesome, Brynden being just a bit awesome, and the Brotherhood without Banners joining together to give us one of the most beautiful yet chilling moments of the series inside the Hollow Hill. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY: A big ole session on someone we've probably spoken about more than anyone else on Scraps and Scrolls: Jeor Mormont.
