This week on Bad at Sports Duncan MacKenzie and Amy Kligman check in with Sean Nash! Thanks to the glory of the Charlotte Street Foundation.  Sean Nash is a visual artist whose work often intersects with fermentation, social practice, and ecological themes. His projects integrate fermented foods into sculptures and exhibitions, exploring the cultural and biological aspects of fermentation. Nash has exhibited at various venues including the Kniznick Gallery at Brandeis, Plug Projects in Kansas City, and Black Ball Projects in Brooklyn. Notably, his "Lactobacillus Amongus" exhibition used sourdough starters and bacteria as a form of portraiture, blending biology with visual art. He also engages with social practice art, such as his long-term project "Trans Fermentation," where he collaborates with other transgender individuals to ferment food, creating a platform for dialogue and community building. Nash's work challenges traditional boundaries between disciplines, bringing together art, food, and social issues   Additionally, he recently earned the Charlotte Street Visual Art Award, and his upcoming work will be featured at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. His pieces often comment on environmental and agricultural themes, creating art that envisions a hopeful, sustainable future https://kcstudio.org/honors-sean-nash/ https://emerge.asu.edu/artist/sean-nash/ https://www.townsend-gallery.com/artists/seannash https://charlottestreet.org/ https://www.amykligman.com/ https://senash.com/

FEATURED GUESTS: Julia Vering is a performance artist and musician, licensed clinical social worker and Registered Expressive Arts Therapist based in Kansas City. She has integrated the arts into social work for 20 years, centering her practice in joy, humor, imagination and the strengths perspective. Vering began experimenting with video-based drama therapy techniques while working at a nursing facility in 2004, and noticed that residents with dementia had decreased agitation, increased spontaneous communication and increased joy while engaged in this improvisation.Residents loved watching themselves in the “movies” they starred in. She continued to hone this method, incorporating fill-in-the-blank scripts, green screen technology and live performance participation via video projection. She has received grants from The Charlotte Street Foundation and Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts for her community-based performance work involving collaborations with older adults and people with neurocognitive disorders. Vering tours and releases albums as “Unicorns in the Snow”, a performance art project that integrates interactive projections, stop-motion animation and original music. Vering has worked in hospice and long-term care settings for the last 17 years. She opened her private practice, Expressive Arts Therapy KC in 2022, serving children through seniors individually, pediatric palliative care patients in their homes, and groups in nursing facilities. Vering's expressive arts groups engage nursing facility residents in reimagining vintage movies and musicals through improvisational play. She became the first Registered Expressive Arts Therapist in the state of Kansas in 2023 and serves as the Kansas State coordinator for the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association. She integrates expressive arts, psychodrama and EMDR into her practice, and is currently creating a workbook and film on performance art interventions for people with neurocognitive disorders. Welcome back to a monster week at Bad at Sports. (We took an unscheduled vacation in August [cringe emoji]. This week we drop three shows the first of which is episode 851 from Kansas City with Kevin Demery. A great conversation about art, life, and the intersection of race and justice.   This conversation is amongst several you will hear in the next few weeks are brought to you through the support of Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City, where they are doing a remarkable job of bedrock-ing the Kansas City art world and its artists.   You should also know that you can expect us back on the radio on Wednesday with an episode from Expo Chicago. Excitingly, EXPO just sold to Freize and what that portends for our local International Art Fair, we will do our best to find out.   And, this Friday we will drop a third show with Andrew Mcilvaine who is currently doing an exhibition with our friend and now your's Kevin Demery.   Our friend Duncan. (He works here.) Is also hoping that we will let you know about an opportunity he and a West Coast artist and theorist, Ted Hiebert (former guest of the show) are hosting at the College Art Association conference in February 2024. They are hosting a panel on post-rational visuality and all that that could mean. How do we re situate human-ness now (post-ai, hyper bureaucratized, justly, and constantly observed and ordered), and what can those parts of being human which don't feel rational or computable mean to us? How do we foreground them? What kinds of art allow us to get enough intellectual space that we can reflect on these conditions? If you've got ideas about a human future through art, they've got the panel for you.   Kevin Demery - http://www.kevindemery.com/ Charlotte St. Foundation - https://charlottestreet.org/ Andrew Mcilvaine - https://www.andrewmcilvaine.com/ CAA Panel “Post-Rational Visuality” With Duncan and Ted Hiebert (it is a bit of a scroll) - https://caa.confex.com/caa/2024/webprogrampreliminary/meeting.html Sarah Higgins and Art Papers - https://www.artpapers.org/people/sarah-higgins-2/

This week on the Side Woo we talk with LA-based artist and former long-time Bay Area resident Kelly Lynn Jones.  I was really inspired by Kelly's story and asked her to come on to talk about how she in 2018 she made the decision to file for bankruptcy for her store Little Paper Planes, which was a super cute boutique on Valencia Street in the Mission District of SF.  It came as a bit of a shock to those on the outside and I was really impressed by how transparent Kelly was while going through this challenging time that many would look at as a failure. But instead, Kelly saw it as a chance to change her life. She and her family eventually moved back to LA where she grew up, and began recommitting herself to her art practice.  Three years after returning, Kelly's first solo show in LA sold out affording her the chance to pursue her art more seriously than she had for a decade since graduate school. BONUS: Listen all the way to the end for some special ghost-related content. Spoiler: it involves ouiji boards. Really people don't use them. "Helping other artists is part of my artistic practice." Harold Smith During this episode, Jewell Sparks talks to artist Harold Smith while he is sitting in his studio in Kansas City. They discuss Harold's art journey and career transformation. Harold first started selling his art on ebay back in the day. He recently retired from teaching after 35 years of being a computer science teacher.  Throughout his dual career as a self taught artist and a teacher, he wanted to transition to teaching art, but that was not an option due to the shortage of computer science teachers within the public school system.  Since his retirement, Harold has been granted a 3 year residency by Studios Inc,and a cash grant from a Charlotte Street Foundation.  According to Harold, his work addresses the black male experience, and encounters he has had throughout his own life. Harold is a member of the African American Artists Collective, and enjoys mentoring other artists on a regular basis.  Harold reflects on the lives of some of his childhood buddies and expresses that childhood experiences can teach one to be less judgemental of others.  Harold's art has been collected across the globe. Most recently, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art added a piece of his art to their collection, and Harold Smith's paintings are easy to spot in the TV show "Bel - Air." You can also purchase some of Harold's work on Artsy and other platforms.  Cover Art: Harold Smith, Black Man, Brown Suit, 2021, Acrylic on Canvas 48 x 36in. I talk with the duo of curators about their project for the recent 50th anniversary of NCECA- Across the Table, Across the Land. Taking place over the better part of the year the project encouraged the public to submit both object and event-based works around the idea of ceramics, food and community. The project culminated with an exhibition at the Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City. In the interview we talk about how ceramics can be a catalyst for communal gatherings, the role of emotion in exhibition design, and the documentation/analysis of social practice. For more information on the Across the Table please visit www.ncecaacrossthetable.com.   Namita Wiggers is a writer, curator, and educator based in Portland, OR.
