This week on the Side Woo we talk with LA-based artist and former long-time Bay Area resident Kelly Lynn Jones. I was really inspired by Kelly's story and asked her to come on to talk about how she in 2018 she made the decision to file for bankruptcy for her store Little Paper Planes, which was a super cute boutique on Valencia Street in the Mission District of SF. It came as a bit of a shock to those on the outside and I was really impressed by how transparent Kelly was while going through this challenging time that many would look at as a failure. But instead, Kelly saw it as a chance to change her life. She and her family eventually moved back to LA where she grew up, and began recommitting herself to her art practice. Three years after returning, Kelly's first solo show in LA sold out affording her the chance to pursue her art more seriously than she had for a decade since graduate school. BONUS: Listen all the way to the end for some special ghost-related content. Spoiler: it involves ouiji boards. Really people don't use them. About Kelly Lynn Jones Kelly Lynn Jones (b. 1977 Los Angeles, CA) is a Los Angeles-based artist. She earned a BFA and MFA from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Sometimes an unusual question, asked on the fly at any time anywhere in your life can really throw you. A stop you in your tracks kinda thing. This has happened to the Boyz so many times over the years. Usually, while they are deep into a late night of recording conversation in the Homan Studio. After a few sips of firewater and a puff or two of the magic dragon, you forget about the microphone that's only a fist away. You don't even see it anymore. It's just a conversation between long-time friends. Then all of a sudden, there it is. A curve ball question nobody anticipated. In this case, the question that kicked it right out of the gate on this episode of the Hamlin Avenue Boyz Podcast is on track 1 and it was a simple one posed by Vince. Do you have a child among your children who you would have to say is your FAV? No names. Just do you? How do you answer it? Can you answer it? Especially since the world will hear your answer. And oh by-the-way you've made the commitment from the very beginning to always “Just Roll Tape” and capture it all no matter what. And it's at that very kind of moment that you're glad you have a regular in-house studio recording consultant. In this case, our dear friend Jack Herer whom The Boyz have known for such a long, long, long time. Whenever a moment like that occurs, you're glad Jack is around before the tape even rolls. He simply and consistently advises in his own special way to just relax, blow it out, and then fogetaboutit. Just let the tape roll. And that's just what the Boyz always end up doing. By-The-Way thanks to the many listeners of the Hamlin Avenue Boyz Podcast for pointing your ears in this direction now and then. More food is fulfilling its life's mission these days. Dealing with food waste is a top priority among grocery retailers, so instead of just dumping produce into a landfill the process has become more detailed and complex. However, the end result remains the same: To nourish as many as possible.Earlier this year a group of food waste experts gathered at the 2023 Southeast Produce Council's 2023 Southern Exposure event to talk about the issue and share strategies. Justin LaCroix, director of sustainable operations and brand lead for health and sustainability at Ahold Delhaize USA, was on the panel and shared some of the things his company was doing to cut down on the waste.Ahold Delhaize is part of the 10x20x30 initiative which features 10 of the world's biggest food retailers. The power grocers are engaging with 20 of their priority suppliers to cut the amount of food waste in half over the next seven years. Ahold Delhaize wants to cut food waste by 32% at its stores by 2025 and 50% by 2030. To help do this, the company is launching a HowGood label program to provide product sustainability ratings, and the retailer also wants to advance traceability. It's not a simple pivot. For example, a produce manager on the store floor needs to engage in constantly rotating items like plums and tangerines with the goal of selling as much as possible on a daily basis. Then at the end of the day a determination needs to be made as to where food past their sell date could be most useful. The tasks demand constant attention and action. In this episode of SN Off the Shelf, LaCroix talks with Supermarket News Senior Editor Bill Wilson on the goals of food waste moving forward and greener practices that can be done at the market.

Nicole Mueller is a San Francisco, CA based visual artist. Her work includes large-scale paintings, murals, and installations that mimic the effects of stained glass. Driven by process, her abstract works are highly saturated, built with layers of collage-like shapes. Her work explores the complexity of color, states of flux, dichotomies within painting, the transitional nature of being, and the threshold between interior and exterior, the tangible and intangible. Mueller earned her BFA in Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD in 2011. Her work has been exhibited in California, New York, and Maryland. She has been an artist-in-residence at ArtPoint (Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco), the Vermont Studio Center, and Proyecto 'ace in Argentina. She has completed public projects in collaboration with the City of Alameda, California Arts Council and Downtown Alameda Business Association, ArtSpan and the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco, as well as commercial businesses throughout San Francisco. In 2017 she was the recipient of the Mark M. Glickman and Lanette M. McClure Artist Award for emerging artists in California. Mueller is also co-host of Beyond the Studio, a podcast that interviews working contemporary artists about their career paths and aims to increase transparency in the art world by hosting candid conversations about their business practices, time management, financial planning, and how they're navigating the unique challenges of making a living, creatively. The podcast received an Alternative Exposure grant in 2017 from Southern Exposure in San Francisco, with support from Facebook's Artist-in-Residence Program and the Andy Warhol Foundation. Beyond the Studio is a cultural partner of Art World Conference, and a fiscally sponsored project of Independent Arts & Media. In this episode, we discuss... Tonight, we feature organizing at the state and local level. Celi Tamayo-Li with SF Rising talks about their work on the College for All campaign in California. Deepa Varma from the San Francisco Tenants Union talks about the effort to repeal the California Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act. She brings us breaking news from the state Housing Committee. And we talk with the people involved with Barangay Broadside, an art and activism project in San Francisco's SOMA Pilipinas Cultural District. Tonight, we're looking at movement building and legislative change that is mounting in the new year. But if you take a bird's-eye view, we'll see that the repression has been year's in the making. Whether we're talking about the increase in higher education tuition, the dramatically increasing rents throughout California, or the forced displacements of communities there has been resistance through people powered solutions. College 4 All The first to join us is Celi Tamayo-Li. Born and raised in SF, Celi is the field organizer at San Francisco Rising where they're focus is on “youth” which is defined as up to 30 years old. Celi taught history at Hilltop High, SF's school for teen parents, and was the campaign manager for Vote 16 (a measure to lower the voting age to 16 in SF), which only lost by 2 percent. Celi talks about SF Rising's College 4 All campaign. Our next segment is hope for housing in the new year with an effort to repeal the Costa Hawkins Act. Our guest is Deepa Varma, the executive director of the San Francisco Tenants Union. Deepa has worked as an organizer, litigator and activist on social justice issues including women's rights, public benefits, criminal justice reform and immigration. She was a tenants rights attorney in New York and at San Francisco's Eviction Defense Collaborative. She helped to train a new generation of eviction defense lawyers in San Francisco to enforce the tenant protections we have in the city, and to provide last minute litigation support for tenants in housing court. YOHANA getting down! Photo by Anth Bongco. Finally, we we are joined by artist Colin Kimzey and Claire Amable, the youth health coordinator at SOMCAN or the South of Market Community Action Network. Colin and SOMCAN were awarded $3,000 from Southern Exposure's Alternative Exposure grant to “invigorate and transform the San Francisco Bay Area arts community”. The project is called Barangay Broadside and it pays for silk screen workshops at the South of Market Community Action Network. The post APEX Express – Hope for the New Year appeared first on KPFA.
