My venture into franchising with College Hunks Hauling Junk began in a bit of an odd way. I was watching a reality TV show and the founders were on the show. When I saw them the show a lightbulb went off related to another conversation I had with a Starbucks barista. The barista was a college graduate but had chosen to work at Starbucks because she liked the lifestyle better than her field of study. I picked up the phone and called College Hunks and one of the founders answered. After some discussion, I joined as a franchise owner because I saw a massive opportunity to provide people with jobs that didn't require them to sit behind a desk and made an impact in people's lives. After exiting College Hunks, I got involved in Fownders, which was founded by Gerard Adams because the mission resonated with me. Fownders is a start-up accelerator focused on building an entrepreneurial ecosystem for the disadvantaged in urban markets. When you develop a product, often the most successful products solve a need or pain point. When you work with people from disadvantaged backgrounds they often have vast experience with both tangible needs and pain points. So we launched in New Jersey where Gerard and I lived to make an impact in our local community and beyond. Each quarter we would bring in a cohort of 12 companies to establish a presence and hopefully expand operations after the program. Social media has been an industry I've kept my eye on for years and when I finally saw my mother using social media I knew it had reached the impact level needed for small businesses to leverage. However, being a small business owner myself for years, I realized social media marketing was not the best use of the business owner's time. Rather, they should be focused on their customers and the product or service they offered to solve a problem. We launched 42 Growth Strategies to help small businesses reach their desired audience while they maintain their focus on the customer. Sports have always been a part of my life and if I could advise the parents out there. Sports is one of the greatest ways to teach the necessary disciplines that lead to success in business and life. When your kids are involved in the right programs they help form the building blocks for many of life's most important lessons. Sports can teach you how to work with others, the value of hard work, and how to deal with failure. I failed all the time in sports and when you have great coaches they are always pushing you to become the best version of yourself. Even if your child doesn't excel to the level of earning scholarships, sports still opens the door to other opportunities. Gerard Adams, Also known as The Millennial Mentor. An inspirational leader, serial entrepreneur, angel investor, and philanthropist, Gerard's purpose is simple: to inspire other Millennials to leverage their passions to create the successful lifestyles they dream of. Gerard has a profound ability to help others shift their mindset, towards unlocking their god given abilities. Gerard was a multi-millionaire at 24, but not without overcoming obstacles, fear, and self-doubt. Gerard followed the path that was risky and non traditional, but he's always been one to aim for living a life outside of the ordinary. Gerard is also the founder of "www.EliteDaily.com” which is a multimedia website that provides exclusive, inspiration content to its 80 million monthly users. Today, Gerard Adams is committing most of his time by giving back to the community by providing progressive education through the principles of entrepreneurship. Adams helped develop “FOWDERS” which is an incubator for aspiring inner city entrepreneurs , providing mentorship and a safe haven to pursue their dreams.
Today on Idea to Reality we cover everything digital. Coming from a man who had his first computer in the 2nd grade and learned how to code and build websites at a very young. Anthony Delgado comes onto the show and talks to us about the power of technology in our current economy. Anthony was self-taught for the majority of his life and one major thing he realized on his journey was that instead of being stuck in analysis paralysis and watching thousands of videos and reading hundreds of books. He got out into the marketplace and tested. Saw what worked what didn’t work, learned how to pivot and learn from his mistakes and failures. Anthony also had an incredible experience working with one of the biggest entrepreneurs of our age Gerard Adams. He helped Gerard build up his current business Fownders into what we see today. During his time at Fownders, hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. Anthony found himself being called to lend his heart and help to the people of Puerto Rico. He started off by buying a pallet of water to send out and he then found out that the supplies he and his friends sent out along with thousands of others were actually stuck at the border and not even being distributed. This is when Anthony had the urge to go Disrupt Puerto Rico. He quit his job at Fownders and went to the island and gave away 300 solar lights, food, water and so much more. With some family ties to this beautiful island, Anthony knew this is where his future was. So, as of the last few months, Anthony has moved to Puerto Rico full time and has launched Disrupt Puerto Rico to help teach people everything digital including coding, hacking and digital marketing. Anthony is literally helping to breathe life back into the devastated economy of Puerto Rico by the work he is doing and the jobs he is creating. More importantly, he is helping to transform the island into the first digital hub of the Caribbean through Disrupt and the school he created called the Caribbean Institute of technology. Top 3 Takeaways: Don’t be scared to mess up, don’t be scared for your people to mess up. They will and you will just make sure you are learning from it and pushing forward. If you want to do massive things then utilize other people, hire on a team, ask for help, learn how to delegate. Get out in the market and actually test things out, see what works and what doesn’t work. Do not get stuck in analysis paralysis. Thank you all so much for taking the time to listen enjoy! This next 57 minutes has the power to change your life and your business. BIG call, I know. But honestly, I've done over 300 episodes of AskJackD, interviewed countless entrepreneurs, and this live session with Gerard Adams (Co-Founder of Elite Daily & Founder of Fownders) was perhaps the most profound to date. We went over time, but stick with it to the end as the real magic happens around 49:00 when Gerard opens up about how losing $20 million in his mid 20s helped him let go of ego and redefine the true meaning of success. A lot of of solid takeaways in this episode, so don't miss: - 24:00 - The viral content tactics that Elite Daily used to build an monthly readership of 80 million - 30:00 - The untold story behind Elite Daily's $50million acquisition (and why Gerard almost said NO) - 39:00 - The number one non-negotiable trait you need to possess if you want to be a successful entrepreneur

We are inspired, blown away and in awe of our guest we have on the show today: Gerard Adams, co-founder of elite daily and now CEO of FOWNDERS. Gerard became a multi-millionaire before he was 25 before he lost it all. The solution he found to earn it all back? A one stop shop for millennials to find news about the things they’re actually interested in. With that, Elite Daily was born. Within 4 years Gerard and his team grew the site to one of the biggest online platforms for news. After Gerard’s exit from the company, he realized his entrepreneurial spirit was still very much alive. Gerard then created FOWNDERS, out of Newark, New Jersey, to help entrepreneurs become better leaders and to rise up in their industries. He says leaders create more leaders not followers. He set new goals on helping entrepreneur become leaders and rise up in their own industry. (10:29) “You can have everything taken away from you but they can't take your heart. They can't take it. Get back out there, you can do it again.” --Gerard Adams (20:20) “The key to strategy is to be a little naive in the beginning. It’s ok. Break shit, make mistakes, just understand what the bigger goal, what the bigger mission is. That purpose is what is going to create your culture, values of your company and what is going to get everyone work tirelessly. At the end of the day, that work ethic is EVERYTHING” -Gerard Adams 26:11 “How you make people feel, how you lead people, how you make that sacrifice to rise up; that’s one of the greatest gifts you can have in life. Really impacting and inspiring is real leadership.” - Gerard Adams Failure is part of the growth journey in entrepreneurship. In order to have major success, we need to constantly be building, destroying, and growing. Build your business from a place of strength and passion. This Week's Startup: Robert Arenas, CEO & Founder of Gyminies Boredom is the Devils Playground. Welcome to episode 4 in our Accelerate Your Startup series with Fownders. I am going to try my hardest to express the excitement I have to be bringing you this episode today. It's completely different to what we usually have on the show, so make sure you take note! Here at Stage One Startup, we have had our eye on Robert for a while now after receiving a referral from Toby Dattolo who is the Senior Vice President at Fownders. Gyminies is a health and nutrition startup that creates delicious, eco-friendly palio protein pastry recipes made up of... I'm building up the suspense here. Cricket protein mix! Yes, that's correct, crickets. As in the crickets, the insects you can hear late at night on a summers evening. Now, bear with us on this one, you'll hear more about the reasons behind this in today's episode. Robert is from a small town in Texas where most occupants strive towards a career in the oil and gas industry. Having felt the responsibility to take care of his family, he decided to earn himself a degree in the very industry that holds his community together, that's exactly what he did. After earning his process technology degree, he worked his way up the oily ladder. During his day job, Rob always managed to maintain his side-hustles which included, selling second-hand cars, selling gym supplements and network marketing. Rob truly dabbled in a little bit of everything. Having a humble attitude Robert shared the passion and knowledge in today's episode which we hope you feel just as much as we did. This Week's Startup; Youii w/ Jabari Sills We're super excited to be interviewing Jabari Sills on what is the second episode in the much anticipated Accelerate Your Startup Series with Fownders. Jabari is the CEO and Founder of an innovative app called Youii, which replaces the conventional way for college students to travel across their campuses. What is Youii you ask? Youii is the first ever subscription based ride sharing app, exclusively for university students. Before you write this off as another copy of Uber or Lyft, it's really not. Jabari saw a gap in the market by niching down specifically to university/college students. Jabari saw a huge gap in the market by niching down specifically to university/college students. Instead of taking the shuttle bus, which we all know and hate, you can now enjoy a comfortable ride across campus in luxury, all for an affordable $1 per ride. I know right? As you can probably understand, when we found were put in contact with Jabari, we knew we had to feature him on the show. For full show notes; http://stageonestartup.com/ays-ep002

This Week's Startup: Should I Sign w/ Naitik Patel & Tej Prakash If you've been listening to this show for a while, then chances are you've heard us stress about how important it is to get the legal side of your startup on the right tracks. If you're worried about that side of your business, then this episode will shed some light on that very subject. To kick things off for the Accelerate Your Startup Series 1, we are proud to bring to the show Naitik Patel and Tej Prakash, Co-Founders of Should I Sign. Naitik and Taj have extensive amounts of experience as two of the highest paid attornies in New York and dedicated 20 years to their profession. During their time in their roles as corporate attornies, they were witness to a common problem that hadn't yet been addressed. That problem was for the startups who needed legal needs for their endeavours, it wasn't easy for them to find the perfect attornies to help them with their issues. They guys undertook a lot of market research and data analysis, they noticed that it took twice as long for an entrepreneur to find the right attornies, and when they have found the perfect attornies, they often get turned off by the price of uncertainty that comes with hourly billing which is common practice for attornies. Accelerate Your Startup Series 1 We're super stoked to be bringing you another essential piece of content that we hope you can find value in. We bring you the Accelerate Your Startup series. Our main reason for this was simply to elaborate on the growing use of Startup Accelerators being used by innovational startups and entrepreneurs around the world. During the course of the previous 50 episodes, we started to realise a trend when speaking to the guests that came on our show. A lot of them, when asked recommended putting your idea or business through an incubator to help strip it down to the bare basics. This leads us to ask the question; How many people are doing this? And is there enough information out there on this subject? Does it give the startup cohort a higher chance of success at a faster rate? We then thought to ourselves, why not partner up with the accelerators and incubators to find out all of this information. What truly does work when putting your startup through an accelerator? In this series, you're going to be hearing all about the Do's and Dont's to look for when considering going through an accelerator. For full show notes; http://stageonestartup.com/ays-intro

Stage One Startup: Interviews with Influential Entrepreneurs & Innovative Startups
If you’ve been keeping up with us, you’re probably as excited as we are for this series of episodes in our Secret Entourage month! This is our second collaboration; the first was with Fownders in January. You can find the panel on the dedicated page at stageonestartup.com/secretentourage. Our third Secret Entourage guest (and the last one before our grand finale with its founder, Pejman Ghadimi) is Damian Otero Reggiori. Damian is the CEO and founder of Restyle Retail, a company operating kiosks specializing in hair products in American malls. Damian’s story is truly inspirational. He is originally from Uruguay, but moved to the United States as a child with his parents. Seeing their hard work inspired him, as he explains in this conversation, and instilled a work ethic that has helped him achieve his current success (though it didn’t exactly inspire him to do well in school, so take heart if you struggled there too!). He started his career at a very young age, and has already worked his way to the top despite being only 24 years old. He has 50 employees now, and made $3.2 million last year. In this episode, he shares how he did it -- and explores the role that Secret Entourage has played in his journey. For full show notes; http://stageonestartup.com/ep048

This week, we’re thrilled to have our second Secret Entourage guest on the show! This week, we’re talking with Dave Wongk, the CEO and founder of PureTropix. You may well have already heard of this company, which produces a variety of all-natural body products made from mango and shea butters. The company also has one of the world’s best ingrown hair systems. Dave started PureTropix a bit under two years ago, and has had some amazing success already. Even so, he still runs the company out of his home. In this episode, he talks about creating and running the company, and explains the invaluable role that Secret Entourage has played in the process. The “Millennial Mentor” Gerard Adams is a thought leader for his generation and is rapidly becoming a role model for young entrepreneurs around the world. You probably know Adams as the co-founder of Elite Daily, an online news platform and the “Voice of Generation Y,” which sold to DMG Media for $50 million in January 2015. After leaving the company, Adams did some soul searching and started Fownders, a coworking accelerator in Newark, New Jersey. The Fownders program focuses not only on scaling businesses from idea to profitability, but also on developing each entrepreneur’s emotional intelligence, social skills, and leadership abilities. Adams aspires to be a true mentor to his peers, not just another businessperson selling the entrepreneurial lifestyle on social media. He comes from humble beginnings and has seen his share of highs and lows, which makes him very relatable to young entrepreneurs. In our interview, he explains why he is passionate about giving back to his community and empowering others, shares his best tips for authentically building an audience, and illustrates the power millennials have to shape the future. Adams is an active voice on social media. I highly recommend checking out his Instagram and Twitter profiles @GerardAdams, as well as his outstanding YouTube show, Leaders Create Leaders. My thanks go out to Adams for coming on the show, and I hope you find our interview as inspirational and insightful as I did. In this episode with Gerard Adams, you’ll learn: -- How his big exit inspired him to become a mentor to other entrepreneurs -- Why it’s important for entrepreneurs to give back to their community -- Best practices for building an audience -- The power millennials have to shape the future -- How a huge failure can lead to new opportunities -- What makes the Fownders program so unique ---- Download show notes and transcripts at www.powderkeg.com This episode of Powder Keg is brought to you by DeveloperTown. For a limited time, get 20% off their services when you mention Stage One Startup! If you’ve been keeping up with us, you’re probably as excited as we are for what’s starting in this episode! That’s right, it’s time for the first episode for the Secret Entourage month! This is our second collaboration; the first was with Fownders in January. You can find the panel on the dedicated page at stageonestartup.com/secretentourage. Our first Secret Entourage guest is actually in the industry that we started off in, but we didn’t manage to crack it the way this guy did. He’s only 20 years old, but he’s already a highly successful entrepreneur with several years of experience under his belt. The man of the hour is the remarkable Kiran Ravindra. Kiran is the founder of Carbon Trim Solutions, an exclusive retailer of high-end carbon fibre accessories. In 2013, his company debuted the world’s first true carbon fibre iPhone case, and the company has been growing ever since. In fact, they’re now branching out from phone cases and into lifestyle products such as keychains. Quite a change from breeding and selling shrimp as a teenager, right? (More on that in the episode!) Can you believe January is already over? We loved doing our Fownders month, but now we’re back to our regular routine. As much as we’ll miss our podcasts with the folks from Fownders, this guest is exciting enough to make up for it. You may already know about Timothy Sykes, the American penny stock trader who turned his $12,000 in bar mitzvah money into well over $4 million by day-trading penny stocks. As he explains in this episode, in his senior year of high school, he turned that $12k into over $100,000. In his freshman year of college, he came close to hitting the $1 million mark. Throughout this conversation, you’ll come to understand that Timothy isn’t all about making money; he also cares about using it responsibly and generously. He’s dedicated to giving back to the world. He started his charity and has donated $1 million to building schools. So far, he’s at 35 schools, out of a goal of a whopping 1,000. For full show notes; http://stageonestartup.com/ep032

Before we get started on the last of the Fownders episodes, let’s talk about Instagram for a minute! If you haven’t seen our Instagram page lately, go check it out, and make sure to appreciate the new grid posts. (And if you’re interested in doing grid posts yourself, check out the Instagrids app. It’s much easier than Photoshop!) And now onto our final Fownders guest. Cody Ross, the man behind Slingshot VR, originally hails from the Midwest but now lives in New York. Throughout the episode, you’ll learn more about Slingshot VR, a virtual reality ecosystem designed to allow users to experience environments and events that they may never have been able to experience otherwise. (In less techie terms, it’s a cutting-edge virtual reality production company.) If you’re not already excited about the idea -- and you should be -- just listen to Cody’s passion as he explains how this can change users’ lives and bring people closer to each other and to the experiences they cherish. He’s just as enthusiastic as he discusses Fownders, where he was part of the first cohort. For full show notes head on over to; http://stageonestartup.com/ep031

This Week’s Guest: Nestor Velez First of all, if you haven’t listened to episode 27, you should! It explains what we’re doing this month with Fownders Month and gives you a chance to learn more about our collaboration with Fownders. You’ll also hear about the schedule and who we’ll be interviewing each week. You can also find out more on our website. This is the third of our four Fownders episodes, and we can hardly believe the month is almost over already! You’ve heard from the Fownders leaders. Now, it’s time to hear from the startups! In this episode, we hear from Nestor Velez, the CEO and founder of SanoMind. This platform connects people with mental health-related audio content at a fraction of the cost of therapy. It’s such a hit that if you’ve listened to our previous Fownders episodes closely, you’ll remember hearing about it from both Toby Dattolo and Stephen Bienko. As we learn in the episode, Nestor was born and raised in New York City but has recently moved to New Jersey. He grew up with anxiety and depression, and in fact tried to commit suicide, which ultimately led to the creation of SanoMind. As he openly shares his experiences and journey, it becomes brilliantly clear how invaluable SanoMind will be. For the shownotes; http://stageonestartup.com/ep030

His journey from stage one to success has been a complete rollercoaster, and, as a result, he has some incredible insight to share. Only then did he shift into entrepreneurship and learn about failure in business. Ultimately this journey led him to Fownders. For full show notes; http://stageonestartup.com/ep028

Today's guest is the co-founder of a website you probably know, you've probably been on it. It's called EliteDaily, it's a website that advertises itself as the Voice of Generation Y. And I know a lot of you are millennials. The site was recently sold for $50 million bucks, and Gerard or "G" as he likes to be called, has quite the story. He's a college drop-out turned serial entrepreneur, digital media executive, documentary film producer, and millennial thought leader and philanthropist. He's also been been named one of the coolest people in Silicon Alley tech by Business Insider. His story started after he left college after just one semester. He became a first time entrepreneur shortly thereafter and things didn't pan out as he had hoped — he's gonna talk about that. Fast forward five years, and he's a self-made multi-millionaire. Today he's 30 years old, he's built, backed, and invested in nine companies and trades that all have made seven figure plus profits. Another reason to be impressed by Gerard, Tony Robbins is his guru, and the following Tony Robbins quote changed his life as it has mine and many others. It goes like this, "Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure." And yeah I live by those words. From there Gerard was inspired to launch Fownders, which is his latest venture — Fownders. And it's what he's calling a mentor and a movement that will show our generation how he himself has been able to succeed in business. So he is going in front and center, teaching people what he's learned. And it's not out yet, so we'll have to stay tuned for what's to come. For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.
