2024 World Series - New York Yankees @ Los Angeles Dodgers Games One and Two @ Dodger Stadium Here we go. For the first time since 1981, the Yankees and Dodgers will face off in the Fall Classic. It will be the twelfth matchup between these storied franchises, and the Yankees have certainly had the advantage in the past. The Bronx Bombers have taken eight of the previous eleven series, though the Dodgers have split the last six. On baseball's biggest stage, we have the game's biggest stars ready to shine. The Dodgers have already walloped a New York team this postseason, dispatching the Mets in six games behind an historic offensive performance. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts were outstanding, but it was midseason pickup Tommy Edman who took home NLCS MVP. With star first baseman Freddie Freeman hobbled with an ankle injury, Edman stepped into the cleanup spot and boy, did he clean up against Mets pitching. With a few days off heading into the series, Freeman is expected to return to the lineup, though how he'll be feeling is unknown. The Dodgers have been able to piece together effective innings with solid enough starting and nearly untouchable bullpen arms. LA kid Jack Flaherty (13-7 3.17 ERA 162 IP) will get the ball in game one. It has been a Jekyll and Hyde postseason for the righty, so who's gonna show up? For game two, it will be Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-2 3.00 ERA 90 IP). The Japanese ace had an awful postseason debut, but has been pretty good since, albeit in limited innings. Things have gotten a little shorter in Dave Robert's bullpen, as Evan Philips went down with an arm injury; however, he gets reliable lefty Alex Vesia back after he missed the NLCS. We'll see how Roberts navigates the late innings without one of his key arms. On the surface, the Yankees have been rolling this postseason, dropping just two games heading into the Fall Classic. Digging a little deeper, it has not been as dominant as their record has demonstrated. Every game against Kansas City was close, and it took incredible heroics from Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto to escape from Cleveland in just five games. The bullpen was dominant early, but it has struggled lately. And of greatest concern, Aaron Judge has looked completely lost at the plate, apart from a pair of home runs. The Yankees will need him to refine his MVP form to have a shot in this series. Ace Gerrit Cole (8-5 3.41 ERA 95 IP) will get the start in game one. The reigning AL Cy Young has had to labor through his playoff starts, but he's found a way to be effective. In game two, lefty Carlos Rodón (16-9 3.96 ERA 175 IP) will get the ball once again. He's had one brilliant start and two mediocre outings so far. Manager Aaron Boone will definitely be hoping for the former, as his options in the bullpen are certainly thinner than his LA counterpart's. In the past, these two teams have delivered on tension and drama, and this series should be no different. The Phillies don't win the 2008 World Series without Cole Hamels. He went 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five postseason starts, winning World Series MVP and NLCS MVP honors in the process. He lived up to the hype as the 17th overall pick in the 2002 Draft, giving the Phillies a homegrown ace they desperately needed for years.  Is Hamels one of the greatest Phillies ever? Absolutely. The old-school stats say so, but so do the new ones. Hamels ranks 11th all-time in WAR by a Phillies player, according to Baseball Reference, just behind Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu, and just ahead of Chuck Klein and Curt Schilling. Hamels shared his favorite Phillies memories with Ruben, Jim and Todd before his June 21, 2024, retirement ceremony at Citizens Bank Park. He talked about getting drafted by the Phillies, the franchise's glorious run from 2007-11, drilling Bryce Harper with a pitch in 2012, throwing a no-hitter in his final Phillies start in 2015, and so much more. 1978 World Series Games 1 and 2 Tuesday October 10th and Wednesday October 11th @ Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA The Los Angeles Dodgers (95 - 67) and the New York Yankees (100 - 63) meet yet again in the World Series. Behind the heroics of Mr. October, Reggie Jackson, the Yankees took last year's Fall Classic in six games, securing the 21st championship in their franchise's dominant history. If they're going to repeat as champions, it will be with a new manager, as Bob Lemon replaced Billy Martin in July. The Yanks turned their season around under the stewardship of Lemon, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a pitcher in 1976. His cool, calm, and collected manner was in stark contrast to the explosive Martin; still, there are rumors abound that owner George Steinbrenner regretted firing the firebrand (technically Martin resigned for ‘health reasons'), and even wanted him back as manager within a matter of days. You can't deny the success the Yankees have had under Lemon, but they'll need to win it all to satisfy the Boss. And even that might not keep him happy for long. The Dodgers dispatched the Phillies in four games, winning the series in walk-off fashion with a Bill Russell single to score Ron Cey. Their offense was hitting on all cylinders in the NLCS, and it was their vaunted All-Star infield that led the way. The aforementioned left side (Russell and Cey) combined for 12 hits and 5 RBI in the four games, only to be outdone by the right side. Team Captain 2B Davey Lopes and former MVP 1B Steve Garvey combined for 14 hits, 6 home runs, and 12 RBI, with Garvey taking home NLCS MVP honors. It has been truly inspired play from this core group, who lost their mentor, hitting and infield coach Jim Gilliam, just a few days ago. His memorial service is planned before the start of game two.  Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda desperately wants to start this series with a pair of wins, so to defend home-field advantage he will turn to the top two in his excellent rotation, Tommy John and Burt Hooton. John is coming off of a shutout against Philly, and Hooton is as good as anyone when that knuckle curve is dancing. Yankees manager Bob Lemon will counter with 1978 20 game winner Ed Figueroa and former five time 20 game winner Catfish Hunter. Ace Ron Guidry won't be available until game three, as he pitched the final game of the ALCS against Kansas City. Audio clips from joeydbball on Youtube (links to games below). The Knicks season gets underway tonight with the exact same team they had last year. They should be right in the mix and hopefully they get off to a quick start. Maybe they can get someone at the trade deadline that puts them over the top. We also talked about bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches and how they don't exist outside of our area. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Diamondbacks beating the Phillies to advance to the World Series. Ketel Marte won the NLCS MVP. We heard from a guy who won hundreds of times on radio stations back in the 80's and 90's. Daniel Jones was on with Kay Adams and she asked him if the Giants are trading Saquon and if Jones is starting this week. The Rangers won in Calgary 3-1 and the Devils won 4-2 in Montreal. In the final segment of the hour, Dan in Carteret bought us gifts prior to the pandemic and he actually gave them to Eddie to give to us.

Hour 1 Gio has been on a heater lately with all things sports going his way. He wanted the Phillies out, and they're out. He wanted Max Scherzer to suck, and he sucks. Tonight we are up for a Marconi Award, which is an award for radio. The Boomer & Gio Show are going up against Lin Brehmer, a legendary Chicago host who passed away earlier this year, so we will probably lose. The only thing Gio cares about with this World Series is betting against Max Scherzer when he pitches. The Diamondbacks got word that Chris Russo was going to quit if they won and they were chanting his name. Gio said the Mets had a better season than the Phillies because of the heartbreak. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the Diamondbacks beating the Phillies 4-2. Will Chris Russo stick to his word and ‘retire on the spot'? Daniel Jones talked about watching Tyrod Taylor play well. Deion Sanders doesn't seem to have a problem with the whole Michigan sign stealing allegations. The Rangers won in Calgary 3-1 and the Devils won 4-2 in Montreal. In the final segment of the hour, Gio said he would rather be a fan with the way the Mets season went over the way the Phillies season went and ended in heartbreak.  Hour 2 We continued our conversation on whether you would rather just have a bad regular season like the Mets, or have a great run in the playoffs that ends in misery, like the Phillies. Jerry returns for an update and has audio of the Diamondbacks beating the Phillies as they head to the World Series. How do you build a championship team in baseball? Daniel Jones was on with Kay Adams and bored us all to death. Aaron Rodgers was on McAfee and talked about rehab and how it's been a tough week. He also said he's voting for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Gio imagines Tom Thibodeau slurping all of his food. The Rangers won in Calgary 3-1 and the Devils won 4-2 in Montreal. In the final segment of the hour, Nick Bosa is in the new Skims ad, a Kim Kardashian brand. Boomer did an underwear commercial for Hanes back in the day. We also played Boomer's hummus commercial and talked about his Diet Coke commercial he did with a few Chicago Bears players.    Hour 3 The Knicks season gets underway tonight with the exact same team they had last year. They should be right in the mix and hopefully they get off to a quick start. Maybe they can get someone at the trade deadline that puts them over the top. In the final segment of the hour, Dan in Carteret bought us gifts prior to the pandemic and he actually gave them to Eddie to give to us.  Hour 4 We continued to open gifts from Dan in Carteret that he bought prior to the pandemic. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Diamondbacks beating the Phillies and advancing to the World Series. Chris Russo said he would retire on the spot if the Diamondbacks won the last 2 games in Philadelphia. He went on Howard Stern this morning and Howard had some suggestions on how he could pay the bet off. Daniel Jones was on with Kay Adams giving us an update on his neck and boring us along the way. Aaron Rodgers was on with McAfee and talked about the rigorous rehab he's been going through. The NBA season opened last night but it opens tonight for the Knicks and the Nets. Jalen Brunson said the Knicks are building something here. Moment of The Day involves Daniel Jones being boring on Kay Adams' show. In the final segment of the show, we discussed the dog painting Dan from Carteret got for Eddie and we recapped the Phillies loss, and Gio saying it was better to be a Mets fan this season.

Kevin starts the episode with a housekeeping segment. Aaron Boone will be returning to manage the Yankees after he agreed to a three-year contract extension. The pressure is now on for Boone in the big apple. The Brewers have fired their hitting coach after a poor showing in the NLDS. The Angels moved on from their scouting director. The offseason moves have begun across baseball. Kevin then discusses the NLCS and the Braves taking a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Dodgers made it a series by winning game 4, but the Braves bounced back with a convincing game 5 victory. Eddie Rosario has been the NLCS MVP thus far with a couple of four-hit games including a huge game 5 with multiple home runs. Kevin wraps up the show talking about the ALCS and the back and forth series between the Astros and Red Sox. The Red Sox offense has gone quiet after a historic run for games 2 and 3. The Astros have responded by scoring 9 runs in back to back games and head home to Houston with a 3-2 series lead.
