From August 27, 2024: On today's episode, Sherri Goodman, the Secretary General of the International Military Council on Climate & Security and the first Deputy Undersecretary of Defense (Environmental Security) joins Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien to talk about Sherri's new book, “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security.”They discuss Sherri's career in climate security, beginning at the Senate Armed Services Committee before “climate security” entered the lexicon. From there, they trace Sherri's career educating a generation of military leaders about the nexus between climate change and national security and coining the phrase “threat multiplier,” helping to usher in a paradigm shift at the Pentagon. Sherri addresses skeptics wary of a perceived tradeoff between military readiness and greening the military, as well as others who warn against “securitizing” climate change. Finally, they look ahead, as Sherri lays out her four main pillars of climate action (mitigation and adaptation) and institutional reform (awareness and alliance building). To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. From deployment on the USS John C. Stennis and TOPGUN instructor duty, to commanding the Marines' first F-35B squadron and now helping build high-performing teams at Echelon Front, "Chip "brings unique stories and hard-earned leadership lessons. Find "The Need to Lead" here: https://amzn.to/4nlA67m “The Need to Lead” by Dave “Chip” Berke, with a contribution by Jocko Willink, explores what it truly means to lead under pressure — in combat, business, and life. Drawing on Berke's rare experience flying the F-18, F-16, F-22, and F-35B, the book distills the lessons learned from two decades of military service and years teaching leadership at Echelon Front. From the cockpits of the world's most advanced fighter jets to the classrooms where he now trains corporate teams, Berke breaks down how humility, accountability, and decisiveness shape effective leaders. His stories reveal how ego can sabotage performance and how embracing failure, listening, and empowering others are the real markers of command.

Together, we explore how military-honed leadership translates into exceptional business results. Today, Cory is making a significant impact in the private sector at Johnsonville Sausage, where culture, coaching, and performance go hand-in-hand. Importantly, this is a great example of self-transcendent military leadership in action in corporate America. This is Cory's second time being a guest on the podcast. If you missed it, you can listen to his first episode here. Here is what we cover in this episode: Inside Johnsonville's Leadership Culture Cory opens the curtain on Johnsonville's mission: create the environment where each of us is required to fully develop our God-given talents—and help others do the same. Leaders are called “coaches" Employees are “members" The Johnsonville Way shows up daily through values like Humble Candor, Collaborative Teamwork, Learning Agility, and Personal Commitment. Together, these values create a culture of straight talk delivered with care, high standards, and real growth. Why JMOs Fit and Thrive Cory explains why junior military officers are prized: they lead up, down, and across, stay relentlessly focused on mission accomplishment, and learn fast. Moreover, that mindset maps directly to Johnsonville's values and to the expectations of modern companies that need adaptable leaders who close gaps, build teams, and deliver outcomes. The Lens of Leadership: Serve • Build • Inspire Drawing from his book, Cory starts with followership—a set of learnable, practical skills that make you professionally essential while creating chances to demonstrate superior leadership. He shares tools like an Impact Map to connect new skills to on-the-job applications, team metrics, and company results. He also talked about the 70-20-10 learning model (learn most by doing). By applying these tools, leaders can see tangible results while developing themselves and their teams. Why Listen If you're a JMO considering a transition, this episode of PCS to Corporate America demonstrates how to: Maintain your service-first identity while growing as a leader Thrive in your first corporate role Evaluate company culture effectively Use AI as a force multiplier for high-impact leadership Overall, listen to learn how to carry your military edge into business and become the leader others want to follow. The Cameron-Brooks Mission At Cameron-Brooks, we guide officers through the transition and accompany them along the journey to de-risk the transition and help them reach their goals. Host: Shannon Huffman Polson Shannon Huffman Polson is a former Apache helicopter pilot, speaker, and author of "The Grit Factor: Courage, Resilience, and Leadership in the Most Male-Dominated Organization in the World." She is the founder of The Grit Institute, where she helps purpose-driven leaders build grit and resilience. Guest: Phyllis Wilson Phyllis Wilson is a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 with a military career spanning nearly four decades, including deployments to Iraq as a senior intelligence analyst. She is the president of the Military Women's Memorial in Washington, DC, the only national memorial honoring the service of women in all branches and eras of the U.S. military. Description In this episode of The Grit Factor, Shannon Huffman Polson talks with Phyllis Wilson about her remarkable journey from a young recruit to a leader in the Military Women's Memorial. Phyllis shares her experiences in the military, the challenges she faced, and her mission to preserve the stories of America's servicewomen. Summary Phyllis Wilson discusses her military career, the importance of preserving the stories of servicewomen, and her leadership at the Military Women's Memorial. She reflects on the challenges of being a woman in the military, the impact of her work, and the lessons learned from her service. Key Highlights 00:00 – Challenge Accepted Phyllis opens by reflecting on moments when people underestimate her: “Sit back and watch, buddy. I'll show you what I'm capable of doing.” She frames underestimation as fuel for proving herself rather than discouragement. 03:17 – Joining the Army for Opportunity Phyllis describes joining the military to afford college — a “four-year plan” that turned into 37 years of service. She was drawn in by education, travel, and a sense of purpose. 05:09 – Motherhood & Warrant Officer Training Phyllis recounts attending the Warrant Officer Candidate Program while raising young children: Describes grueling inspections and “hazing” culture of the time. Brought her kids to training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, with classmates helping out. Reflects on resilience and community support. 09:07 – Climbing to Chief Warrant Officer 5 She breaks down the rarity of her rank: Out of 1 million Army personnel, only ~822 are CW5s. Highlights the tight Warrant Officer network and the importance of relying on collective expertise, not pretending to know everything. 10:22 – Imposter Syndrome Phyllis candidly talks about moments of doubt at senior levels: “You pinch yourself—am I really supposed to be here?” She learned to trust the leaders who believed in her and to “just do the work.” 13:25 – Iraq: Life-or-Death Intel Decisions As a senior intelligence analyst in Special Operations, she was responsible for nightly mission targeting: Describes pressure of ensuring missions aren't sent to “dry holes” or booby-trapped locations. Talks about guilt when missions result in deaths, even if assessments were correct. “Sometimes when they don't come home alive, you kick yourself… Can I keep doing this?” Coping through treadmill running 70–80 miles a week to manage stress. 17:36 – Serving Alongside Her Sons Phyllis' sons were deployed in Iraq simultaneously: Promoted one to Sergeant during Thanksgiving. Mixed pride and deep fear, especially near the end of their tours. 21:43 – Special Operations as a Woman She thrived in Special Ops because the mission came first and gender was irrelevant: “I never even noticed I was the only woman in the room… I count lefties, not women.” She stresses speaking with value, not just to be heard. 25:57 – Leadership & Trust Under Pressure Trust looks different in combat vs. garrison. She highlights how earning trust through competence is essential when lives are on the line. 29:45 – Childhood Foundations Growing up as a tomboy in a strict but loving household shaped her confidence and resilience. She recalls lifeguarding as a teen and learning to develop “thick skin” early. 33:45 – Evolving Sense of Purpose Over decades, her purpose deepened through service and exposure to other cultures. She learned profound lessons on contentment and gratitude from communities abroad. 39:01 – Post-Military Transition After hanging up the uniform, Phyllis felt unexpectedly lost. She founded “Wounded Warriors Have Families Too” to support families of injured service members, restoring her sense of mission. 44:28 – Leading the Military Women's Memorial As president, she discovered how many women's stories remain untold. The Memorial's database has 325,000+ stories but represents only ~10% of all who served. She's passionate about preserving and amplifying these histories. 51:52 – Defending Women's Stories Today In an era where some narratives are being erased, Phyllis emphasizes protecting and elevating military women's stories — including those who died recently. “Our job is to honor and tell the stories… not drag their names through the mud.” 58:01 – Lifelong Mission Phyllis' driving force today: “How could I not have known these stories?” She's committed to making sure America knows the names and deeds of the women who served. 1:01:20 – Closing Shannon thanks Phyllis for her leadership and storytelling. Phyllis' journey is framed as a call to preserve legacy, build resilience, and lead with purpose. This week, the boys sling hot takes like baristas slinging lattes, diving into HR tech, AI, and corporate shenanigans with their signature wit. Kicking things off, they set the stage with a vibe check, chuckling over the wild ride of recruitment tech while side-eyeing the economic chaos of startups chasing venture capital like kids chasing ice cream trucks. No military leadership talk here, but they roast corporate missteps with the gusto of drill sergeants. The spotlight lands on JuiceBox, an AI-powered recruiting tool that snagged $36 million, including a $30 million Sequoia-led Series A. Chad's jazzed, calling it the “Capri Sun of HR tech” for its catchy name and $10 million revenue rocket. He wonders if they'll build a platform or get gobbled up in an acquisition faster than you can say “merger margarita.” Joel, the grumpy cat of the duo, sniffs history repeating, comparing JuiceBox to 2010s sourcing flops like Entelo. “Build fast, sell faster, or get squashed by LinkedIn,” he grumbles, predicting a big-tech beatdown. Next, they geek out over AI agents revolutionizing recruitment. Chad raves about Hackajob's agents that dig through applicant databases like treasure hunters, saving cash and recruiter sanity. Joel dreams of Chrome's new free Gemini AI turning browsers into job-search genies, scaring HR tech vendors like a horror flick. Chad warns, “Free? You're the product, kids!” as they lament job scams and hope AI security saves the day. LinkedIn's new Learning Career Hub gets a roasting—Chad calls it a “half-baked LinkedIn loaf” compared to slick competitors like Degreed. Joel likens it to Apple's VR headset: a panicked hedge against being left behind. They also torch Reid Hoffman's claim that work-life balance is a “red flag,” with Chad snapping, “Want me to work like a CEO? Pay me like one!” Joel laughs it off as Silicon Valley hot air, like a CEO dropping truth bombs after one too many kombuchas. Ford's CEO Jim Farley's $5 million pledge to train 15,000 workers by 2026 gets a collective eye-roll. Chad calls it “couch cushion change,” comparing it to Apple and Tesla's billion-dollar China training sprees. “Farley's begging for government handouts like a kid at a candy store,” he scoffs. Joel agrees, noting it's chump change next to a Super Bowl ad, and both warn U.S. companies are losing the EV race to China's manufacturing muscle. Finally, a Waymo self-driving car's illegal U-turn leaves cops stumped—no driver, no ticket! Chad, fresh off a Spanish speeding ticket by camera, wonders why the U.S. can't keep up with “Star Trek-level” tech. Joel predicts local governments will milk Google for fines to fund football fields. With automation on the rise, they're all in—just don't expect Robocop to sort it out anytime soon. We're excited to hear from Reverend Parker as he shares his insights on leadership, the evolving role of chaplains, and how they support soldiers in the face of both everyday challenges and extraordinary pressures.

Derek Champagne talks with former British Military Officer, Jimmy Burroughes. Jimmy's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and purpose. He began his career as a British Military Officer, leading soldiers across Europe and the Middle East. It was there he learned, sometimes in life-or-death situations, the true meaning of intentional leadership: how to inspire trust, keep people motivated under extreme pressure, and build unity in uncertain environments. When Jimmy transitioned out of the military, he faced his own challenges, struggling to find his place in the corporate world and experiencing first-hand the burnout and disconnection that so many leaders face. This difficult period became the catalyst for his mission to redefine leadership in a way that sustains both people and performance.Through his journey from the battlefield to the boardroom, Jimmy developed his “Simplify to Amplify” methodology, a framework born out of necessity that is now transforming how global organisations lead their people. His story resonates deeply because it is not just about success; it is about overcoming adversity, finding clarity, and choosing a path that creates lasting impact.Jimmy shares this journey with honesty and humility, weaving in the hard lessons from both military service and corporate leadership. Audiences often walk away not only inspired but equipped with the belief that they too can lead with more intention, reclaim time, and create meaningful results without burning out.Jimmy made the leap from British military officer to Fortune 500 leadership expert and now leads the charge in transforming overwhelmed managers into high-performing leaders. His bestselling books, “Beat Burnout - Ignite Performance” and “Escape the Multitasking Trap,” deliver action you can feel. His signature “Simplify to Amplify” methodology gets leaders performing at an average of 47% higher in just 90 days—no fluff, just results.Across Samsung, Bank of America, Lego, Fonterra, and 40+ countries, Jimmy has guided more than 3,000 leaders from burnout to breakthrough. The secret? He applies hard-won lessons from command and operations to cut through clutter and create measurable improvements. These same principles have driven up productivity by 156% and slashed overwhelm by 89% in teams worldwide.Learn more at: https://www.jimmyburroughes.com/Business Leadership Series Intro and Outro music provided by Just Off Turner: https://music.apple.com/za/album/the-long-walk-back/268386576

For over five decades since the Liberation of Bangladesh and the 1971 India-Pakistan War, the Indian state has had to pay a heavy price to protect the fabric of its democracy and its basic geographical structure in the face of a multiplicity of national security threats. These threats have ranged from constant pressure along its Northern and Western borders from nuclear-armed adversaries, several internal fissures and cracks in Punjab, J&K and the Northeast and a festering problem of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) across several states. Complementing these internal and border security challenges have been challenges in the neighborhood that have precipitated the deployments of India's military such as in Sri Lanka and Maldives in the late 1980s. Air Vice Marshal Arjun Subramaniam, former fighter pilot and accomplished military historian, explores war and conflict in contemporary India in his latest book, Shooting Straight: A Military Biography of Lt Gen Rostum K. Nanavatty. Moving beyond the traditional discourse of the 1965 and 1971 wars, the book examines modern military challenges through the lens of one of India's most distinguished post-1971 Army commanders. From leading para commandos in Sri Lanka to commanding formations in Siachen, Baramulla, and the Northeast during key crises, and later serving as Northern Army Commander in the aftermath of the 2001 Parliament attack, Nanavatty gained a frontline perspective on hybrid and ‘grey zone' warfare—topics highly relevant today. Joining AVM Subramaniam in a free-wheeling discussion on the changing character of conflict over the past few decades and its implications for India through the lens of Gen Nanavatty is military historian Probal Dasgupta. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. In this episode of BIC Talks, Arjun Subramaniamn will be in conversation with Probal Dasgupta. Despite the fact that so many of them make it look easy, the daily lives of senior U.S. military leaders can be incredibly demanding. Laura Weimer examined how senior leaders manage their well-being (or, at times, struggle to do so) amidst these demanding careers, and she's in the studio with host JP Clark to share her discoveries. Drawing from her research, Weimer highlighted the unique pressures of senior roles, including frequent relocations, intense scrutiny, and the weight of consequential decisions. She also discussed the inevitable challenges of mid-life, such as caring for aging parents and navigating evolving family dynamics, which compound work-related stress. Weimer's key takeaway? Developing a strong sense of identity, meaning, and purpose is essential for fostering resilience and sustaining leadership effectiveness. I don't know if necessarily it's the Army's job to help us figure out our identity. I do think it would be valuable for the Army to acknowledge the value of those conversations and maybe even prompt those conversations. The segment frames these cuts as a reversal of ideological corruption within the Pentagon and ties them to broader concerns about censorship, constitutional rights, and the military's role on American soil.

What's behind Donald Trump's obsession with Greenland? Most of the island is covered in ice, less than sixty thousand people live there and, until recently, it was best known for snowy photos of polar bears. But climate change has changed the equation and thrust the island into the middle of global politics. Donald Trump has repeatedly said he'd like to buy the territory, and last week at a news conference he said that taking military action to acquire it was not off the table. Sherri Goodman is secretary general of the International Military Council on Climate and Security. She is also a senior fellow at the Wilson Center and author of a new book, “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security.”
