After our recent triple-digit temperatures, it seemed like a good time to help you cool things down by serving up a few of our favorite heat-beating drinks and dishes from around the Milwaukee area. That's where we start this episode, which finds Ann sharing her personal approach to finding the best summer beverages. It's actually pretty genius: Ask the experts. We're talking bartenders, baristas and mixologists, all of whom have their own favorites that just might become your new favorite:Tripper Duval from Lost Whale goes classic with a frozen margarita (both boozy and non-alcoholic).The Mothership owner Ricky Ramirez similarly leans on an old standby, the mojito, noting that just about anyone can learn how to make a good one.Another one on the NA front comes from Fruition MKE's Tiffany Miller, who suggests their MKE Refresher mocktail that blends teas, ginger, lemonade, lavender and mint.Food-wise, there are a few different approaches to lowering your internal temperature, including:Gazpacho, the traditional chilled tomato and cucumber soup from Amaranth Bakery & Café. A slightly out-there strategy would be to spice things up at DanDan, where you can pick up a smashed cucumber salad that sprinkles in a little kick to go along with one of the most water-heavy veggies around.Chef Alex Hanesakda has a few summer-friendly selections at SapSap in Zocalo Food Park, including his take on chicken wings, smoked brisket fried rice and classic Mamma's egg rolls. That's a mere portion of the selections Ann lays out in her Milwaukee Magazine article, so make sure you check out the whole list. Speaking of lists, here's everything else we cover in this episode:A new community-first pub, Soul of a Starr, is on the way in the Harambee neighborhood. The former PIzza Hut on West Burleigh is getting a big upgrade to become Julie Mae's Southern Cooking.Vanessa Rose has taken a big step with her Mother's pop-up, which now has its own brick-and-mortar space at 2900 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.
On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Amy Bebchick, Chief Program Officer of OneTable aka the AirBNB of Shabbat. OneTable is an online platform that connects hosts with guests - and vice versa - and also offers Shabbat support and resources. OneTable, aimed at adults 21 to 39, launched in 2014; two years ago, they expanded their offerings with OneTable Together, for people aged 50 and up. People in both demographics - and in all levels of faith - are interested in starting, rebooting or re-envisioning their Shabbat practices. “One of our taglines at OneTable is Find Your Friday,” says Bebchick. “There's not [just] one way to bring Shabbat into your life.” Shabbat, she explains, is all about marking the moment and making that moment sacred. Some use this end-of-the-week gathering as an oasis with the people closest to them. Others invite their neighbors or open their home for an additional guest or two in order to build community connections. People Shabbat through OneTable in more than 700 communities all over the US and in Toronto. “We're in the business of peer-to-peer Shabbat,” Bebchick explains. “Now more than ever, we are all really hungry for a way to escape from what is going on outside and to really find that place that feels like a warm blanket on a winter day.” Bebchick, who has been practicing Shabbat her entire life, starts planning her Friday night menu as soon as she is done with Shabbat the Saturday before. Sometimes Shabbat is enjoyed around the dinner table, other times it's part of a picnic or a hike. “I start thinking about what the weather is going to be, what do I want to be cooking, who else might be coming to the table,” she says. “[I like] the idea of really carving [out] that space every Friday.” Amy Bebchick talks about the evolution of OneTable, the value of a Shabbat practice, and more. She also shares her recipe for gazpacho soup on-the-go, one of her favorite portable Shabbat dishes, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. Is it wrong to make up stories about silly gunfights fifty years ago while authoritarian figures are taking power and civilians are getting massacred as we speak? That's the dilemma Falk has to solve, in the middle of a gunfight! The Hapless Hack of Gazpacho Gulch, episode 119 of This Gun in My Hand, was rustled up and branded with innuendo by Rob Northrup. Getting a story accepted by an editor who was then fired, and getting it rejected by his replacement, was based on something that happened to my favorite creative writing professor, the late Dr. Gilbert Cross. The editor who liked his stuff published three of his spy novels under the name “Jon Winters” in the late 70s and early 80s, before getting replaced by an editor who didn't like them.Credits:The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain.
We call this soup Mexican as a salute to some of the ingredients, but we doubt that there is a Mexican household that has this recipe in its treasured old recipe file. This is a glorious summer soup. Anticipate serving it, and be sure to have ripe avocados on hand.

We are at the last day of August for 2024, and there are 335 days until the next time we call the current month after that particular Roman emperor. Fans of adulation toward long-gone dictators shouldn't fret, though. There are 304 days until July 1, a factual statement that should also please Canadians. This is the final audio podcast of Charlottesville Community Engagement for this month, the sixth in an effort to make sure there's a chance for people to hear the people quoted in the stories. I'm Sean Tubbs, grateful for the listeners! In this edition: * Albemarle Supervisors agree to a tax rebate arrangement with Home Depot worth three quarters of a million dollars (written version coming Monday)* Albemarle Supervisors have also approved a rezoning for Granger property in Albemarle's southwest urban ring (learn more)* Traffic fatalities in Virginia are up while total number of crashes has slightly decreased (learn more) * Speed-camera enforcement to begin in October for Hydraulic Road school zones (learn more) * Transit partnership votes to transition to Regional Transit Authority (learn more)First shout-out: Charlottesville E-bike Lending Library In today's first Patreon-fueled shout-out: The rolling topography of the Charlottesville area keeps some people away from choosing cycling as an option to get around. Perhaps an e-bike is in order? That's where Charlottesville's eBike Lending Library comes in! E-bikes are a great way to get around the community but there are many brands and styles to choose from. Because many e-bikes are sold online, it can be a challenge to try an e-bike before buying one.The Charlottesville E-bike Lending Library is a free, not-for-profit service working to expand access to e-bikes in the area. They have a small collection of e-bikes that they lend out to community members for up to a week, for free. You can experience your daily commute, go grocery shopping, or even bike your kids to school, and decide whether e-bikes are right for you. Check out this service at https://www.ebikelibrarycville.org!Behind the scenes note to anyone readingThis is a podcast only edition which usually means there is nothing original. This time around, though, there is one story that will go out in written form in Monday's edition of the regular newsletter. So if you really want to know more about Albemarle County's $750,000 tax rebate deal with the Home Depot, you can listen to a six minute story I produced yesterday to fill time for today's radio program that went out on WTJU. My professional history in journalism began in 1995 with an internship at WVTF Public Radio. I love producing in sound and even in a long period of time where I produced very few audio stories (roughly 2007 to 2020) I still produced all of my print stories by going through recordings. So now I get to present information in both ways, and my production calendar has matured to be able to help me sort out what stage every single story is in. Today that means an advance audio version of a print story, something I don't expect to happen often. But who knows? If it's not on the spreadsheet, I'm not sure when I'll be able to really wonder. There's a lot to do, and I'm grateful to paid subscribers and other contributors who help me keep this business going. Is this part spoken in the podcast? Are there secrets and easter eggs? Is there room in this community for odd audio collage? Will I be brave enough to try something new? You'll just have to listen and find out! Second-shout: Gazpacho in the Garden at MorvenIn today's second subscriber-supported shout-out: The Morven Sustainability Lab invites you to celebrate the new semester on Friday, September 6 for the annual Gazpacho in the Garden event at 5 p.m. There will be a summer meal harvested from a garden that's all run by students at the University of Virginia. There will be family-friendly music, lawn games, and tours of the garden where you can learn something. There will be limited seating so do come prepared with picnic blankets and chairs. For ticket information, visit the appropriate page on EventBrite. Behind the scenes notes for #CCE-724AMuch of the music in the podcast comes from Wraki and that's another reason to listen! The bits in between the segments are odd concoctions I make. The opening music is from P.J. Sykes, as I commissioned him more than seventeen years ago for a podcast product that didn't work out. Until now! Thanks for listening or for reading to this point. I'm glad to have been able to make a steady living after all this work trying to prove myself. Before additional new stories can be written for Charlottesville Community Engagement, it is necessary to complete work on previous ones. In this sonic edition:* Two dozen apartments planned for land next to Meadowbrook Shopping Center (learn more)* Demolition permit filed for 303 Alderman Road (learn more)* Procurement round-up: Repairs coming to the Charlottesville Transit Station (learn more)* There's a meeting scheduled on September 10 for upcoming road improvements in the Pantops area (learn more) * Both Republicans on Albemarle's Electoral Board express concern about potential use of ranked-choice voting (learn more) If you are new to the newsletter, there is an occasional podcast as well. Our recipe for this episode is a summer classic: Gazpacho! Bossy has been making this recipe for many years, as evidenced by all the splatters in her cookbook. It meets all of our criteria: makes a lot, uses one pot, and you have most of the ingredients in your larder. And it's versatile! It's perfect for a hot summer day. We recount our visit to a wonderful yarn shop during Bossy's recent visit to the PNW, introduce our newest feature: knitting in pop culture, and give updates on our projects. In this episode, we translate Martin Prado's name into English, and reminisce about MLB journeyman David Swimmer (not Schwimmer). Also, one team gets ethered, David doesn't fix Josh's internet, we ruin rap music, and we declare our favorite Dominican actor to be Yonaton Taylor Tomas. And, if you're ever feeling like you're having a tough day, just remember that in 2002, Ron Wright's MLB debut went much worse than whatever happened to you at work. #martinprado #davidschwimmer #jtt #ronwright #pharoahemonch #herberthoover #claritin #gazpacho #gestapo #gepetto #gelato https://www.patreon.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.facebook.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.twitter.com/benchwarmerstp https://www.instagram.com/benchwarmerstp/ https://www.teepublic.com/stores/benchwarmers-trivia-podcast
This week's Prog-Watch is another edition of our Explorations series, this one looking at Crossover Prog! In this program we'll explore the crossover sub-genre through great music from The Tea Party, Kevin Gilbert, Supertramp, Peter Gabriel, Phideaux Xavier, Radiohead, Ritual, Lunatic Soul, The Dear Hunter, Dave Bainbridge, Gazpacho, Steven Wilson, and Big Big Train! Please note that I accidentally announced this show as Explorations, Vol. 6 during the program, but later realized it was actually Vol. 7. To avoid confusion on the website I have corrected the show art and titled it properly as Vol. 7. (Oh the perils of self-producing a weekly internet radio show and podcast! Don't try this at home, kids!)
Cereal's not gazpacho, unless it is? We never really landed on an answer. Also, Daytona's coming up, plus some other racing news.+++Off Track is part of the SiriusXM Sports Podcast Network. The lads are recording live from a hotel in London and decide to put on dressing gowns and slippers to give the illusion of grandeur, despite Kevin saying that he thinks lads in dressing gowns are a bit of an ick. Then prompted by their book making it to number 2 in the Irish book charts, narrowly missing out on the top spot, they discuss their experiences of being second best. The iconic Blarney Street Pram Push also gets a mention and of course PJ has to mention that Blarney Street is the longest street in Ireland because he's never once stated that in any previous episode ever.Get your hands on a copy of The I'm Grand Mamual: Easons / Dubray / Bookstation
