Harmony Slater reconnects with longtime friend and fellow teacher Paul Dallaghan to explore his journey from Ireland to India, from business school to biology, and from asana to advanced Pranayama. Paul shares the inner current that drew him to spiritual practice, his years immersed in India and Thailand, and his groundbreaking research on how breath-based yoga practices affect longevity, telomere length, and mental health. The episode is filled with insights on what it means to be truly engaged in your practice, how ancient yogic techniques translate into measurable physiological benefits, and why sincerity may be the most essential ingredient in personal transformation. Whether you're a seasoned yoga practitioner or someone looking to understand how the breath can change your brain and your life, this episode will spark curiosity and offer grounded, heart-centered wisdom. In This Episode, You'll Hear: Paul's early spiritual awakenings from farms in France to kibbutzim in Israel How yoga found him in New York City and redirected his life path His years in India, spiritual pilgrimages, and devotion to Pranayama The influence of Sri O.P. Tiwari and the Kaivalyadhama lineage His PhD research at Emory University: what ancient yogis knew and science now confirms Why telomere length matters and how breath practices directly impact it What sincerity in practice really looks like, and why it's essential Surprising stories about psychedelics and why they had little effect on him Guest Bio: Paul has spent 30 years in the wellbeing arena, from immersion in original breath-body-mind practices to cultural and scientific study. He is CEO and founder of Samahita Retreat since 2003, the first full wellbeing retreat center in Asia, known for breath, yoga, wellness and fitness, thriving today on Ko Samui, Thailand. Paul spent many years in India, including in Mysore with P Jois, being the last to be certified by him in his lifetime (in 2007). He learnt pranayama in-depth with his primary teacher, O.P.Tiwari. Paul was acknowledged in 2022 in the Indian tradition as “Master Yogi: Pranacharya (Breath Expert)”. Paul was aware of the need for robust research and deep study in this field and devoted himself to academic scholarship, earning a Ph.D in Biological Anthropology from Emory University. His area of specialty was the breath and related practices, their history and origins, as well as a scientific analysis where he developed protocols and carried out a clinical trial study assessing psychological and physiological markers on mental health, stress, and longevity outcomes. Paul has taught practical workshops all over the world as well as at the University level while being an invited speaker to events, conferences or by private organizations. The ability to laugh and banter and not take yourself seriously are key to his philosophy of life. All this while being a devoted father to two sons. In this episode of The Charity Changemakers Podcast, we embark on an inspiring journey with Paul Winspear, CEO of Weston Hospicecare. Paul's path, from a 25-year career in the oil and gas industry to leading a hospice, showcases the unexpected turns life can take. He candidly shares how a growing unease with the environmental impact of his former sector prompted him to seek a more fulfilling path, eventually leading him to the helm of Weston Hospicecare. Paul emphasises that the skills honed in the corporate world are indeed transferable to the charity sector. However, he dispels the notion that charity work is an "easy ride," highlighting the unique challenges and responsibilities that come with running a hospice. Balancing compassionate care with tough business decisions is a constant reality, demanding both empathy and strategic thinking. We delve into the remarkable successes and growth of Weston Hospicecare under Paul's leadership, from the transformation of their day services to the innovative expansion of their retail business with a superstore and drive-thru donation centre. Paul underscores the critical role of location and collaboration in the non-profit sector, showcasing how strategic choices can drive remarkable results. Whether you're contemplating a career shift, seeking inspiration for your own charity, or simply curious about the inner workings of a hospice, this episode offers a wealth of insights. As retirement neared, Paul and Cheryl Thornton moved from Delaware to Florida, believing it would be their “forever” home. While Florida is a great location for cruise enthusiasts like Paul, he hated it - the weather was unbearable and the drive to relatives in the northeast was too long. When it came time to retire, Paul sought somewhere with a temperate climate, a reasonable driving distance to the northeast, and near a city with professional football and basketball teams. After extensive research, Paul zeroed in on the Charlotte, North Carolina area. The couple purchased a home in Mooresville, North Carolina, a town located about 30 miles from Charlotte with more reasonable home prices than the city. Hear Paul profess his love for Mooresville and cruising on Episode 164 of Retire There with Gil & Gene. It's been another exciting week in the world of artificial intelligence. What does it mean for marketers? The guys break it down on The Marketing AI Show. First up, Paul and Mike have hypothesized about this, and now the speculation has come true. According to a scoop from The Information, Microsoft plans to incorporate OpenAI's ChatGPT into its Bing search engine. Today, Google handles more than 80% of search traffic. In comparison, Bing processed about 9% of worldwide searches in 2022. Rumor has it Microsoft is making a major play into using ChatGPT-like AI answers in search. Not to mention, this could open the door to using ChatGPT in Word and other Office products. Just days after the scoop, Semafor reported that Microsoft has been in talks to invest up to $10 billion in OpenAI. The funding would eventually give Microsoft a 49% stake in the company, valuing it at $29 billion total. Next, Microsoft just announced a major milestone development in voice AI. The company revealed an AI model called VALL-E that can synthesize anyone's voice using just 3 seconds of audio. Microsoft shared some audio samples, and simply put, Mike Kaput said they are “pretty stunning.” Based on just a few seconds of a person saying a random sentence, VALL-E can create completely new speech from scratch in their exact voice. The implications of hyper-realistic voice AI technology are widespread and mind-blowing. Finally, Paul's recent LinkedIn post on AI disrupting marketing agencies got a lot of attention. In it, Paul said, “Artificial intelligence is going to disrupt a lot of marketing agencies in 2023. Some will seize the opportunity and create enormous value for themselves and their clients, while many will be obsoleted. These laggards won't all die off overnight, but their relevance and value will quickly fade, and their clients (and people) will move on.” Hear Paul's motivation for writing the post and the conversation that ensues. As advancements become more prevalent, conversations have become more important for marketers and business leaders. Tune in to see how you can act on these developments.
