In this episode, I respond to a question from Melissa in Colorado about how to handle sessions where children aren't showing much emotion or verbalizing content—especially when they spend multiple sessions simply coloring. Melissa shared that she often feels stuck repeating the same reflective responses and unsure of how to engage meaningfully when the play seems minimal or quiet. I unpack the differences between tracking behavior, reflecting content, and reflecting feelings, and offer strategies for building variety in your responses—including using narrative commentary and practicing outside of session to build confidence. I also explore why we need to trust the process and avoid assuming a lack of play or emotion means a lack of substance. Every moment in the playroom has meaning, and our job is to stay grounded, observant, and faithful to the model—even when it looks quiet from the outside. In this final episode of the Mastering Neutrality Series on the Play Therapy Podcast, I reflect on the essence of child-centered play therapy (CCPT) through a deeply moving piece written by Lee, a CCPT therapist in the UK. She beautifully captures what it truly means to embody neutrality, congruence, and acceptance in the playroom. Her words illustrate the heart of our work—being present with children, no matter the mess, the chaos, or the unknown, and holding space for their emotions without judgment. I also share exciting news about my ongoing partnership with Core Wellness, where February will be dedicated entirely to CCPT. With new CEU opportunities and trainings on the horizon, we are continuing to spread the power of CCPT far and wide. As we close this series, I hope this episode reminds you of the profound impact of simply being with children in the playroom. PlayTherapyNow.com is my HUB for everything I do! playtherapynow.com. Named Arkansas best personal trainer of 2019, CCO of Core Wellness, Creator/ Owner of REPS training, entrepreneur, father & husband Quen Spencer.
My story and studies began as a “wounded healer” whose training and experience have also included the necessity of self-love and self-healing which I teach to others. * My original vision in 1997 was to offer dance as a healing art and bodywork to support women to heal themselves and their centers in the divine feminine way. My commitment as a practitioner, conscious performer, and choreographer, is to model and embody this healing with the intention to support and encourage others. * My personal healing journey began in earnest at 23-years- old, in the 1991. I sought help from holistic practitioners and then a spiritual guide to heal personal trauma (spiritually and physically), a dysfunctional relationship, and serious spiritual, emotional, and low back pain. At 27, I began professional healing studies. At 28-years-old, I started performing bellydance and teaching it as a healing art for women. * I was studying and practicing Chi Nei Tsang (aka CNT or Integrated Internal Organ Massage), a Chinese Taoist healing art and “Unwinding the Belly” with Allison Post. This included belly massage, breath and energy work. I worked with family and friends helping them heal trauma and abuse, scar tissue, and digestive issues. * I then went on to continue my recovery and professional journey/studies/practice for the next 25+ years in dance, functional & corrective exercise as a core specialist, bodywork, and overcoming mental illness with spiritual practice and lifestyle. * I have come full circle with a complementary, interdisciplinary approach to support my original vision in 2021 and beyond. * * You can find Morgyn Danae here: * Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/morgyndanaewellness/ * https://www.instagram.com/morgyngaiadancer/ * Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=morgyn%20danae%20wellness * https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004352375691 * LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/morgyn-danae/ * * Dancing Meditations With Morgyn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDOVEXD_S78&feature=emb_logo * * If you like the streaming platform that I am using called StreamYard use the link below to sign up with and receive a $10 credit for signing up. Dr. Masha Petrova is on the show to discuss the launch of a mini-documentary series called Altium Stories. Altium Stories is a brand new YouTube series which highlights today’s innovators and designers; people who are out there making astonishing, cutting-edge technology that will impact our world in significant ways. Before becoming Vice President of Brand Marketing at Altium, Masha earned a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of California San Diego. Meet Masha Petrova, one of the people at the helm of the new mini-documentary series Altium Stories and learn more about her personal story. Watch the Video, Click Here. Show Highlights: Masha grew up in Moscow, Russia, before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Her mother was a doctor and her father was a Chemist. But maybe even more notable, given Masha’s background, her grandfather was an Aerospace Engineer during the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States, and he was even involved in developing the orbit for Sputnik: Earth’s very first artificial satellite. Sputnik’s resounding success triggered the Space Race, which inspired the formation of NASA less than a year later. During the Soviet era, Russian Science Fiction had reached new literary heights and was in its ‘Golden Age’. Masha notes that she was a major fan of the genre, and that Science Fiction even influenced her decision to become an Aerospace Engineer: “There were no computers, no iPads when I was growing up—no food half the time really—so there was a lot of reading that I could do… and I decided when I was six, that I was going to be an Astronaut or Cosmonaut and then move here [to the United States].” Masha earned a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of California San Diego. Regarding her move from engineering to marketing, Masha elaborates, providing a unique insight into what unites the seemingly disparate fields, and why she finds it challenging. Altium has just launched a new YouTube channel called ‘Altium Stories’, which is specifically dedicated to telling the stories of Altium’s users and customers, showcasing their innovations and contributions in mini-documentary format. While meant for industry professionals—engineers, designers, etc.—Altium Stories are family-friendly, and Masha says they’ve even served as inspiration for her own kids. Currently featured on Altium Stories are mini-docs from companies like Core Wellness, which designs technology around meditation—a haptic feedback device which can sense your electrocardiogram through your thumbs, and provide information about changes in your autonomic nervous system while you meditate. And VPI Technology Group, a Salt Lake City-based company which designs a small form-factor radiation detection device used by public safety and law enforcement agencies. We also hear from VOX Amplification Ltd., maker of VOX amplifiers, a mainstay in the Beatles’ music equipment. Not only is there more, but there’ll be more mini-documentaries added every month. The next innovative technology featured on the series could be your own! If you’re an Altium customer who would like to be featured in Altium Stories, please reach out! Share your story, showcase your projects, or get your product out there. Masha can be contacted directly at Masha.Petrova (at) altium.com. Physical therapy; many of you have had it after an injury or surgery. Typically, your doctor prescribes it and your insurance dictates who you can see and how many sessions you may have. What you really want, or need isn’t necessarily factored in. Kristin Thomas, Physical Therapist and owner of Core Wellness and Physical Therapy, believes in a different, more holistic approach focused on becoming aware of the interconnectedness of the different parts of the body.Patients come to her for help after being injured or when a minor condition has finally deteriorated into a painful problem that impacts their functionality. During hour-long sessions she conducts a thorough assessment of their injury or condition and looks at how pain is impacting their entire body. The area you are experiencing pain is just the tip of the iceberg. By evaluating your whole body, she figures out what is the “Boss” or main issue that has escalated into your current problems. If there are head to toe issues, she looks at posture. Then she starts treatment with the “Boss” and moves on to other areas as needed. You don’t have to have had surgery, been in an accident or had a recent injury to utilize physical therapy. Starting treatment when you have small issues can keep things from turning into big issues.Myofascial release:The body is connected on a cellular level by fascia. “It is that tough, connective tissue that runs throughout your entire body and surrounds and infuses every part of your body including your bones, arteries, spinal cord, nerves, organs and cells. It has no beginning and no end, so if one part of it tightens, it can cause pain in another part of the body”.Practicing myofascial release on specific areas of the fascia can “open up” or relieve issues in other parts of the body, lessening or eliminating pain and restoring movement.Dry needling:Dry needling is a technique where “specially trained physical therapists insert a thin filament needle into the muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point to break up restrictions that could be causing the pain and limiting your motion”. It is not the same as acupuncture despite the fact that it also involves inserting needles.Process for relief of pain.-Start with physical therapy. Build your strength back up, get flexible and open your fascial system. That may not be the complete answer, but it is a good first step. If they can get things opened up it can help with rehab later.-Evaluate: Are things are getting better? If not try an orthopedic doctor or chiropractor.-Evaluate your posture and habitual movements so surgery, if needed, will help. Surgery alone isn’t enough if you don’t change bad habits.-Watch for small things before they become big things.Journal Questions:Have you had any past injuries worth investigating?Do you have anything that currently bothers you… be it a nuisance or debilitating? What are you feelings about trying physical therapy? What are your barriers to getting an appointment on the calendar?Homework:Find a quiet place where you can tune into your body and become aware of what it is trying to tell you. Relax and breath slowly. Notice which areas are tight or uncomfortable. Breath and put intention into the areas that are bothering you to calm them down. Regularly practice awareness to stay tuned into your body.Goal setting will always be part of your homework. Once a week write down your focus or goals for the week. Every Friday reassess them, tweak them or change them to fit your needs. It’s “Your journey, your way”.Links:Direction Not Perfection, Accountability and Coaching from your Wine-loving Dieticianhttps://braughlerbooks.com/store/books/direction-not-perfectionKristin Thomas:www.corewellnesstherapy.comhttps://www.facebook.com/corewellnesstherapy/
In this episode of the OnTrack podcast we have as our guest; Tyler Mincey, who is the VP of Engineering for Bolt. Bolt is located in San Francisco and Boston and is a hybrid venture that is part venture capitalist and part engineering team. Bolt offers a unique model to help startups get off the ground, and get product to market. Watch the video here. Show Highlights: Tyler’s background is in product design, especially the intersection of hardware and software product development Worked at Apple at new product development team for 5 years Digital agency in New York, doing web app and mobile app development in UI/UX VP of Product at Pearl Automation - automotive aftermarket startup Bolt - Mechanical, hardware and software as well as product development At Bolt we are a venture capital firm and we invest in concept-stage businesses developing technology products. Usually there is a physical aspect. We help companies develop feature sets and get traction in the market. We help build companies while they’re growing and have full time engineering resources to support the portfolio companies. Startups are different: More resource constrained, and less marketing muscle after launch Why did Bolt adopt a model that includes engineering support? When you need to create a physical product, these technology products require a lot of cross functional work completed, for a startup there are a lot of needs that can’t be fulfilled. The things available today make it possible for companies to create things faster and on smaller budgets than ever before. Project Vive is a good example of a new technology company that would not have been possible before. Bolt has about 70 portfolio companies at the moment: B2B companies, sensor systems, wellness devices, medical devices, and direct to consumer electronics. Digital native protocol brands, such as flower delivery services, or baby formula and other physical goods with the same challenges in design, quality control and logistics and acquiring and retaining customers. Bolt Portfolio Page Interested in companies building out infrastructure for space. What are common mistakes you see? We see people falling in love with the concept of their own product. We encourage companies to test with real customers as soon as possible. The product needs to be tested and iterated upon. Try to frontload the market validation as much as possible! Can people succinctly communicate the value of your product? Will word-of-mouth work? Does it have a snappy, succinct selling point? Is the experience of using it so sticky they don’t want to stop using it and they want to tell all their friends about it. Validation and verification of just their product specs is one side. Engineering the actual technology is a separate track. Often people couple these together as one, but you can really do both in parallel. Why Bolt? Why Startups? There is a culture of sharing in software that hasn’t happened yet for hardware. We try to distill information here so people can tap into shared knowledge and if possible, avoid pitfalls that other people have already experienced. A few favorites: Core Wellness - guided meditation trainer, a consumer product with beautiful industrial design; OrbitFAB - orbital gas stations for refueling in space. Pitches can be submitted on Bolt’s website. Meditation has been proven to improve our well-being, but it’s not unusual to sometimes wonder if it’s actually making a difference. This self-doubt can sometimes throw people off the practice, especially beginners, and lead them to believe that meditation isn’t right for them. Based in San Francisco, Core Wellness is hoping to give people more confidence around meditating and encourage them to build on the habit. They’ve created a physical device, Core, that people can hold in their hands while meditating. It connects to an app and emits vibrations to guide users through exercises while the biosensors embedded in the device track health data—allowing users to see that meditation is, in fact, having a positive effect on their bodies.
