One of the best voices in rock has been used to describe J.R. Richards. He's the original singer of Dishwalla, one of my favorite bands to emerge in the 90s. Richards has sold millions of records, written some chart-topping hits and has toured globally. Perhaps his most noteworthy accomplishment was writing "Counting Blue Cars," which he performed and recorded with Dishwalla. That song won the Billboard "Rock Song of the Year" award in 1996 and two ASCAP awards for "Song of The Year" in 1997 and 1998.   Richards has also recorded a few solo albums and is on the cusp of releasing his next album, the 10th in his career. I only recently became acquainted with his solo work because I was looking for an acoustic cover of "Counting Blue Cars" for an acoustic 80s/90s covers project. I found an acoustic version, but when I saw the singer on that acoustic version, it occurred to me that it wasn't the original guy. Down the rabbit hole, I went. I don't know who the new singer is. He's good, but I'm definitely partial to Richards' voice. So I found his solo work, website and lots of other info about him that I never knew. I loved Dishwalla, but I'm not what you'd call a super fan. I lost track of the band after they stopped releasing new stuff.   But I am a big fan, so I was stoked when JR agreed to an interview. Speaking with him was kinda weird. The time passed so quickly! I spend most of our time nerding out with him about e-commerce, the importance of email lists and other topics I typically pursue on the podcast. I ended up with several questions that we never got to. The other thing is that he's a 'normal' person, a dad and husband; a very talented normal person, but just a guy.    I don't know what I expected, but I enjoyed speaking with him. Richards is as kind and humble as any other indie musician I've ever had on the podcast. George Pendergast is the original drummer for the popular 90's alt-rock band Dishwalla. They had numerous top songs like "Counting Blue Cars" and "Charlie Brown's Parents" before disbanding after the turn of the century. Back with new music, George walks us through the journey that is Dishwalla.

Everyone was "Counting Blue Cars" back in the late 90s with the band DISHWALLA.  The track earned them a Billboard Award for “Best Rock Song” for 1996 as well as two ASCAP Awards for “Rock Track of the Year” in both 1996 and 1997, driving Pet Your Friends to sell more than a million copies worldwide. Touted by fans and industry alike as one of the best live bands to come out of the 90's, Dishwalla is here to stay, with the stories and bruises to prove it.  Drummer George Pendergast joins Casio this week to talk about their new EP ALIVE available everywhere.

Dishawalla in 1995 were on the cusp of becoming a household name with their album 'Pet Your Friends' featuring the hit songs "Counting Blue Cars" and "Charlie Brown Parents" A couple more albums and even a slot on the CW show Charmed couldn't stop the train from coming to a hualt. The broke up in the early 2000's. It was a chance show Rockcast in Caddott, WI in 2008 that put the train back on the tracks though. Orginal member and drummer George Pendergast joins Cutter to tell us the story and give us the lowdown on the new song "Alive."

It was an absolute honor to interview J R, he is an amazing person, and an absolute pleasure to speak with. When they say "don't meet your heroes," they weren't talking about this guy. My only regret on this episode is that we didn't have more time to keep talking. I had so many questions, and I have to admit I was a bit frazzled speaking to someone I admire so much, so they didn't all come out coherently (some didn't come out at all). We also hear the problem of disenfranchisement of American citizens that reside in US territories such as Guam and Puerto Rico. We hear the frustration of being able to participate in presidential primary elections, but not the presidential elections themselves & how this is not only incompatible with our democratic system, but with everything we stand for and that are willing to fight for in foreign soils.
