In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles Berman interviews Giuliana Funkhauser, a transdisciplinary artist known for her innovative blend of digital code and synthesized audio to create immersive art installations. Giuliana, based on the U.S. East Coast, completed her graduate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, concentrating on art and technology, with a particular interest in sound synthesis. Besides her artistic endeavors, she teaches courses on data sonification and video game development. Her collaborative projects include working with musical artist Elizabeth Verosa and visual artist Alison Tannenhaus, performing excerpts from their EP '2021' in events such as the 2022 New England Synthesizer Festival. Additionally, Verosa and Funkhauser's track is featured in the Rewoven Transmissions collection, a remix of Cathode Raytube's works.Giuliana's shares how she got introduced to music and her unique concert experiences, ranging from middle school outings to witnessing legendary bands like Everclear, Judas Priest, and Iggy Pop. She recounts attending the Radio 104 Fest and vividly describes how Everclear was not her favorite but ended up being the main act she saw due to time restrictions. A humorous and memorable moment emerges from a misunderstanding that led to her attending a performance by Mono of Japan instead of the expected European band Mono, a life-changing encounter that profoundly influenced her musical tastesGiuliana also narrates her experiences at the Halloween Industrial Music Fest during Hurricane Sandy, where she saw numerous notable acts like Author & Punisher and Theologian in an incredibly intense, weather-challenged environment. Her story culminates in recounting the remarkable Sunn O show, a visceral and intense performance where the sheer power of the sound and visuals led to a memorable audience connection.Throughout the discussion, Giuliana elaborates on her creative process, revealing how she and her collaborators use data sonification and visual cues to guide their live performances and improvisations. Listeners are invited to explore Giuliana's work further on her website gfunkhouser.com and through various platforms like Bandcamp that feature her recordings.BANDS: Animals, Author and Punisher, Big Brave, Bohemia, Butthole Surfers, Candlebox, Cathode Ray Tube, Cracker, David Linton, Dead Voices on Air, Dear Woman, Dishwalla, Everclear, Flock of Seagulls, Freeze Pop, Go Go's, Harpy, Iggy pop, Inkanti, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, King Gizzard, Lady Purge, Local H, Lush, Mogwai, Mono, Otto von Schirach, Police, Semisonic, Snowbeasts, Stabbing Westward, Sunn, The Pretenders, Theologian, Tony the Floyd Dementia, Uriah HeepVENUES: Club X, Radio 104 Fest PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708

Episode 355 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Ben Maitland-Lewis, Director of Startup Banking & Founder Success at Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and yes, this episode is also sponsored by SVB. Ben and I go way back. His previous company, Pretty Instant, had a long-standing relationship with VentureFizz. This Y-Combinator company was an on-demand photography marketplace that did all of our office tour photoshoots on VentureFizz. It honestly was an amazing experience… such a great company. But even when you work with someone for a long time and you have a great professional relationship, there is so much about the person that you don't know and this is one of the reasons why I love this podcast. I learned that Ben's background story is very eclectic… from living abroad as a child, to being a street performer and being in the circus to playing music with an orchestra… and then being in a band playing the top clubs in LA to playing drums for other bands like Incubus, Dishwalla, and others… I could go on and on, so I'll stop here and let him tell his story in this interview. Today, Ben is still leveraging his experience as a founder but helping other entrepreneurs in lots of meaningful ways at SVB. In addition to Ben's background story, we also cover: * A discussion about making the transition from founder to employee. * Ben's journey into entrepreneurship and the story of PressKit. * All the details about Pretty Instant and how the company got started and scaled. * His current role at SVB and the different ways he is working with founders. * Some analysis and positive vibes from SVB's State of the Markets report. * And so much more. Episode Sponsor: As a longtime champion of the local startup ecosystem, Silicon Valley Bank supports innovative companies with the solutions and financing they need through every stage of growth. With more than 1,500 bankers and relationship advisors, and $42B in loans as of Q2 2024 – SVB delivers the right people, service and resources to support your entire financial journey. The Headbangers Vault welcomes former lead vocalist of Dishwalla JR Richards to the show for an in depth interview about the beginning of his career and his time with Dishwalla as well as his continuing solo projects.
One of the best voices in rock has been used to describe J.R. Richards. He's the original singer of Dishwalla, one of my favorite bands to emerge in the 90s. Richards has sold millions of records, written some chart-topping hits and has toured globally. Perhaps his most noteworthy accomplishment was writing "Counting Blue Cars," which he performed and recorded with Dishwalla. That song won the Billboard "Rock Song of the Year" award in 1996 and two ASCAP awards for "Song of The Year" in 1997 and 1998. Richards has also recorded a few solo albums and is on the cusp of releasing his next album, the 10th in his career. I only recently became acquainted with his solo work because I was looking for an acoustic cover of "Counting Blue Cars" for an acoustic 80s/90s covers project. I found an acoustic version, but when I saw the singer on that acoustic version, it occurred to me that it wasn't the original guy. Down the rabbit hole, I went. I don't know who the new singer is. He's good, but I'm definitely partial to Richards' voice. So I found his solo work, website and lots of other info about him that I never knew. I loved Dishwalla, but I'm not what you'd call a super fan. I lost track of the band after they stopped releasing new stuff. But I am a big fan, so I was stoked when JR agreed to an interview. Speaking with him was kinda weird. The time passed so quickly! I spend most of our time nerding out with him about e-commerce, the importance of email lists and other topics I typically pursue on the podcast. I ended up with several questions that we never got to. The other thing is that he's a 'normal' person, a dad and husband; a very talented normal person, but just a guy. I don't know what I expected, but I enjoyed speaking with him. Richards is as kind and humble as any other indie musician I've ever had on the podcast. We talked about Dishwalla, his forthcoming record, email marketing, e-commerce, touring, adapting to changes in music, Spotify Discovery Mode, SOME of his work as a producer, what he's got cooking in the near future, and more. Find everything JR is up to at JRRrichardsMusic.com. Please enjoy my conversation with JR Richards, the original singer of Dishwalla. A new year brings a new series here on the OST Party! This week's film, the 1999 sci-fi rom-com Blast from the Past, marks the finale of our neo-swing trilogy, and also the beginning of our series on the films of Brendan Fraser. Blast from the Past, as Libby's husband Ian pointed out, is like if you crossed Encino Man with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And the soundtrack reflects that weird clash of tones. You've got the square 60s tunes of Perry Como, the neo-swing revival of The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, and modern 90s rock in acts like Everclear, Dishwalla and Sonichrome. The whole thing is a fascinating time capsule of where we were in the late-90s, and how that era is well and truly behind us. Time marches on, and so do we! SHOW NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE: Blast From The Past is available to stream here For more thoughts on R.E.M., check out our episode on Tommy Boy INTRO/OUTRO: "Dance Rocket" by Jesse Spillane MUSIC VIDEOS: "I Will Buy You A New Life" by Everclear "It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by R.E.M. J.R. Richards is a platinum selling American rock artist. He was the lead singer and songwriter for the band Dishwalla which achieved a major US No 1 hit, several music awards, and released five albums. J.R. now is an artist entrepreneur with four solo albums who continues to develop his 30+ year career. He shares the open-minded and entrepreneurial approach which allowed him to ride the technology wave that disrupted the music industry. What learnings can help us adapt through the current period of disruption? KEY TAKEAWAYS [01:28] How the music industry can offer us ideas having faced earlier major technology disruption. [04:16] J.R. writes his first song at nine and then starts studying opera techniques at 18. [04:58] The importance of protecting and managing content creation ability as an artist. [07:40] J.R. enters the music industry at the tail end of its traditional operating model. [08:19] Control was signed away to get essential physical distribution on finite shelves. [09:32] Artists mostly kept revenues from touring but events also relied on labels' power. [10:32] The opaque economics as labels lent artists money to record, market, and distribute their albums. [12:24] Technology disruption hits and the labels scramble to restructure as revenues drop. [13:15] As digital music quality improves, distribution barriers disappear along with the need to be on a major label. [14:30] Label consolidation took Dishwalla from A&M Records to Polygram to Universal to Interscope. [16:24] A merger grounds release of Dishwalla's second album prompting them to embrace technology developments to connect with fans directly and get more control at a smaller label. [18:15] Who actually had the rockstar lifestyle—the label executives or the rockstars?! [19:37] The industry is in upheaval exploring revenue models in licensing deals with multiple platforms. [21:50] A dramatic murder causes the band's label to fold and J.R. gets disillusioned. [23:35] The band breaks up and J.R. goes solo just as digital distribution becomes mainstream. [24:43] A massive Aha moment as J.R. gets his first ever accurate sales reports. [26:31] How the pandemic forces JR to develop emerging opportunities as venues close. [28:30] Why it is beneficial to check out and experiment with new options. [29:40] J.R. pivots well creating innovative experiences for fans (helped by a talented marketer—his wife!). [31:37] The vital importance of owning your core IP—the master of your album. [34:35] New, tougher touring economics after many venues closed down. [35:59] J.R. continues experimenting on YouTube, Spotify, and other platforms to engage new fans. [36:58] A young singer has millions of views on TikTok of him singing a Dishwalla song J.R. wrote. [37:25] J.R.'s equitable approach to collaborating with the singer. [39:25] J.R. enjoys the collaboration process and finds more access and conversation helps. [40:24] Inviting big fans into the song development process, J.R. agrees with one fan's suggestion. [41:37] How scary it was to show fans behind the curtain. [43:19] The new balance of art and business as creators have to push themselves out in front of people. [45:22] Using data to make educated decisions, control your career, and make a living. [46:53] How ongoing learning allows you to develop your craft and create long-term value for yourself. [48:35] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Be really open-minded and when change starts happening, instead of fighting against it, check it out and ideally embrace it because you may find it's better now than it was in the past. [53:02] J.R. Richards sings! RESOURCES J.R.Richards website J.R.'s Shop J.R. on Facebook J.R. on TikTok J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Patreon J.R.on YouTube J.R.on Spotify QUOTES “It was the nineties, you had to sign a deal with a big label if you want to make it big.” “It always felt like the executives running the label had more of the rockstar lifestyle and personality than the actual rock stars on the label!” “It is terrifying because you are showing them [fans] behind the curtain. But you also realize how much people really appreciate that and it doesn't diminish the way they look at you as an artist, it actually increases their appreciation for what you do.” “I think the hardest thing is for the artist to put monetary value to what they do and push themselves out in front of people in hope that someone will buy what they've created.” “You can get all that information and you can make some really educated decisions about where you focus your time and your energy and you can make a massive career out of it.”

And yet many times, the listeners call the song something completely different! This has even happened to me… Our playlist of misnamed songs this week includes tunes from Dishwalla, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Green Day, Sam Roberts and many others. So, call it what you will but be sure to tune in to The Tap!

One-hit wonders are not unique to the 1990s, and revisiting sophomore albums is always a hit-or-miss experience. Double down on what made the band or artist successful, evolve the sound into something unexpected, or somewhere in between? After scoring a hit with "Counting Blue Cars" on their 1995 debut Pet Your Friends, Dishwalla returned in 1998 with And You Think You Know What Life's About. George Pendergast is the original drummer for the popular 90's alt-rock band Dishwalla. They had numerous top songs like "Counting Blue Cars" and "Charlie Brown's Parents" before disbanding after the turn of the century. Back with new music, George walks us through the journey that is Dishwalla.
Everyone was "Counting Blue Cars" back in the late 90s with the band DISHWALLA. The track earned them a Billboard Award for “Best Rock Song” for 1996 as well as two ASCAP Awards for “Rock Track of the Year” in both 1996 and 1997, driving Pet Your Friends to sell more than a million copies worldwide. Touted by fans and industry alike as one of the best live bands to come out of the 90's, Dishwalla is here to stay, with the stories and bruises to prove it. Drummer George Pendergast joins Casio this week to talk about their new EP ALIVE available everywhere.

Nearly a dozen high-value-breed dogs were stolen from a kennel in Cedar Creek by a team of masked thieves last Friday morning. "LivePD" - the reality TV series that was canceled after it recorded and then deleted footage of the police-involved death of Javier Ambler in 2019 - is returning to production under the new name "On Patrol: Live". Austin's Major League Rugby team, the Gilgronis, have been suspended from post-season play this year, reportedly due to salary cap violations. The title of "world's largest convenience store" - or, world's largest Buc-ee's - will soon be lost in New Braunfels, but is then set to return to Central Texas as the chain plans to replace its Luling location with a 75,000 square foot store. Live music for the weekend: Friday shows include the Camp Nowhere EDM festival at Germania Insurance Amphitheater, Dishwalla at the Haute Spot, KOOP Radio's 27th Birthday Party at Antone's with Kalu James and the Electric Joint, and an A. Dishawalla in 1995 were on the cusp of becoming a household name with their album 'Pet Your Friends' featuring the hit songs "Counting Blue Cars" and "Charlie Brown Parents" A couple more albums and even a slot on the CW show Charmed couldn't stop the train from coming to a hualt. The broke up in the early 2000's. It was a chance show Rockcast in Caddott, WI in 2008 that put the train back on the tracks though. Orginal member and drummer George Pendergast joins Cutter to tell us the story and give us the lowdown on the new song "Alive."

This is an odd pairing, eh? I did this on purpose to keep you guys on your toes. Blackie Lawless is up first to discuss the upcoming tour, possible new music, an autobiography and the 40th anniversary of W.A.S.P.. He told me a very funny Spinal Tap-ish story from a tour they did with Metallica, when he thought the band was at it's peak, and TONS more! Then - around the 26 minute mark - it's George Pendergast of Dishwalla. How's that for a diverse episode?! He tells me about their new E.P., single and the video. We talk about working with Alan Parsons, some shows they have coming up, and even the kid who just played drums for Pearl jam. He has a connection to him as well. Enjoy! -Meltdown- https://www.waspnation.com/ https://dishwalla.com/ https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Charles Rocha, the songwriter/producer who fronts That Summer and the founder of Ring Records. That Summer is a genre defining band, mixing elements of singer/songwriter and pop/rock musings with alternative and punk rock ethos. The band is fronted by songwriter/producer Charles Rocha. Charles Rocha presents an autobiographical collection of songs about loss, time, travel, and struggles with addiction and alcoholism. The band hopes to reach anyone who feels misunderstood, or like they just don't fit in. Rocha began touring at the age of 17 with some of his favorite bands including Bad Religion, NOFX, Lagwagon and Craig's Brother. Born in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles Rocha has lived and created music all over the world. After a brief spell in Nashville, Rocha moved to Florida to work for his grandfather and finish his Bachelor's degree in English. At this time Rocha began recording his own songs from his bedroom. This evolved into That Summer. The Hearth EP Vol. 1 was finished with Roger Lima (Less Than Jake, Rehasher) at The Moathouse Recording Studio in Gainesville, Florida in 2013. 2022 finds Rocha feeling “right at home”; living in Los Angeles and working with Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks, Bad Religion) at Hetson Sound. Most recently, That Summer celebrated its first major radio airplay, when Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Eric Clapton, George Harrison) added their lush, lap-steel laden cover of “Wildflowers” to his playlist on Tom Petty Radio. Currently, Rocha is working with Ian Cross (Janet Jackson, Anthrax, Gwen Stefani, Dishwalla), Ryan Greene (Fat Wreck Chords) and Matt Pinfield to combine their patchwork of styles for what will be a highly anticipated full length album on LA indie-label, Ring Records. Rocha credits the Musicares organization for helping him get settled in Los Angeles, and for saving his life in 2019. Ring Records is an independent rock ‘n' roll record label based in Los Angeles, CA. Established in 2020, Ring Records hopes to provide artists and musicians with a place to call home for their bands, songs and records. We chat about That Summer, Ring Records, the enjoyment of live music, and much more! Visit thatsummersong.com or ringrecords.org for more details.

J.R. was the vocalist for the 90s band Dishwalla, which had two Gold and Platinum albums, and also won Billboard Music and ASCAP Awards. If your music is more mainstream and you are trying to find your audience, this is the episode for you! Key Points From This Episode: Introduction to J.R. Richards Finding old fans vs. making new fans What is your personal brand? Finding your audience as a mainstream artist Focus through resolve Having an ultimate objective Expanding and targeting key audience demographics Culture-based niche marketing Writing emotionally focused copy The almighty play button Juxtaposition to find new ideas Tweetables: “It's one thing to understand everything theoretically, it's another thing to apply to your own music business, and connect with your fans, and figure out how that monetization needs to work for you.” - @metalmotivation [0:10:10] “I love the idea of being resolved because resolved means there's no second guessing, and I don't want to see someone second guess themselves when they need to be marketing.” - @metalmotivation [0:18:43] “I really don't care what your logo looks like because for all intents and purposes, the only logo that people are seeing is a profile pic and a blue name.” - @metalmotivation [0:46:11] “I'm actually excited about going back through the program again just because it's a lot, and you have to kind of mature with it in order to fully appreciate what's going on. Sauropod Season 2 ends with what might be the most chaotic episode yet. Dr. Wriz leads us on an odyssey back into the womb of the 1990s, a decade many of us never wanted to leave in the first place. Dorm room walls will be betrayed, choruses will be delayed, whistling genres will be established, and 9/11 will be invoked several times without apology. Tell me all your thoughts on Gorky Park, then tell me what Gorky Park is. Happy Blocktober. Featuring Chelsea Doyle, Tom McCartan, Ali McLeod, James Ohngren, Finn Wrisley, and Justin Zeppa. If there was ever a time to bring back the chill 90’s, it’s now. You saw it in the loose fitting clothes, and you definitely heard it in the music. It was just a laid back time. A calm before the storm, if you will. Duncan Sheik’s blockbuster hit personified that era. With well over a million radio plays, it followed you everywhere; inside your Toyota Camry, on VH1, aisle 7 at Costco and the changing room at Structure. Perhaps today, as you sang along to it on Nineties On 9, you felt a tinge of sadness for this ultimate one-hit-wonder. Save your barely breathing breath! He’s doing just fine. Nowadays, you’re more likely to find Mr. Sheik where the neon lights are bright than on some legacy tour with Deep Blue Something and Dishwalla. Duncan’s composing for Spring Awakening earned him two Tony Awards and he’s still one of the hottest names on Broadway. I catch Duncan on a reflective day. We pour over his entire career and I share a handful of my favorite songs that should have received more acclaim. Quite a few are of past relationships and Duncan is as open, honest, funny and self-deprecating as any guest I’ve ever had. And did I mention we’re buddies now?

Blast from the Past, huh? Isn’t this whole podcast a blast from the past? How’s this for a blast from the past? The year is 1999. Brendan Fraser is a movie star. In fact, he’s high profile enough that two Academy Award winners (Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek) play his parents. How’s that for a Blast from the Past? Alicia Silverstone is also a movie star. A studio has enough faith in her to ground a high-concept movie about a family who spends 35 years in a bunker and emerges on a bar-turned-cult-hangout. How’s that for a Blast from the Past? The movie features the following prominent plot points: baseball cards, swing dancing, an adult video store. How’s that for a Blast from the Past? Everclear, Dishwalla and the Squirrel Nut Zippers are showcased on the soundtrack! How’s that for a Blast from the Past? Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone’s characters are named Adam and Eve. How’s THAT for a blast from the past? Join Phil, Kenny and Netflix social media coordinator (and Brendan Fraser stan) Erin La Rosa on this week’s Blast from the Past podcast.
We have a special guest in this episode! Peter Maloney of Dishwalla and Tonic drops in with George and me to talk about the post-grunge era, his love for painting, and a few great road stories as well. What could be better than listening to another episode of One Hit Blunders? How about an episode of One Hit Blunders where the boys get sidetracked multiple times by talking about Jimmy Buffett? This podcast is about COUNTING BLUE CARS from the FULL interview with JR Richards/Dishwalla, with Frank Jenks. Greatness.
In a bit of a departure Dave rants about the NBA of all things, Mike once again points out intellectual piracy, and the guys shake their heads at Dishwalla.
Behind The Scenes is a biweekly podcast in which we give you the little known facts and trivia associated with our favorite movies and television shows. Each episode we will review a movie, television show, theater production, you name it, and try to find all the interesting facts from Behind The Scenes. On this episode of Behind The Scenes, we were extremely excited to interview one of my favorite musicians J R Richards. J R is probably best known as the original lead singer/songwriter for the alternative rock band Dishwalla. Dishwalla climbed the charts in 1996 with their single "Counting Blue Cars" from the album Pet Your Friends, which also contains one of my very favorite songs of all time; "Charlie Brown's Parents." In this episode we discuss everything from songwriting, inspiration, and the amazing humanitarian efforts J R has been a part of. It was an absolute honor to interview J R, he is an amazing person, and an absolute pleasure to speak with. When they say "don't meet your heroes," they weren't talking about this guy. My only regret on this episode is that we didn't have more time to keep talking. I had so many questions, and I have to admit I was a bit frazzled speaking to someone I admire so much, so they didn't all come out coherently (some didn't come out at all). Perhaps we can follow up with J R down the road. Thanks again for the amazing conversation J R. Everyone be sure to check out J R's solo album "Honore ET Amore" (Walls is my personal favorite on this album) and his latest release "Stripped," which features stripped down versions of songs from Pet Your Friends (be sure to give Charlie Brown's Parents a listen on that one). http://www.jrrichardsmusic.com/https://www.facebook.com/JRRICHARDSMUSIC/https://twitter.com/JRRICHARDShttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbA5oyz7p7KUawc_PEeVrKg https://www.instagram.com/j.r.richards/?hl=enhttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0724126/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1

This week we're rolling (Del Amitri-style) back twenty years to recall the music of 1996. (You can blame Dar Williams; we just saw her in concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of her classic Mortal City album...) 'Twas an odd time in music... while the post-grunge pop charts were dominated by the likes of Celine Dion and those Macarena dudes, some interesting new acts were breaking through too. Some of them stuck around for a while (Alanis Morissette, Blues Traveler, No Doubt), while others had just a hit single and a weird band name (Spacehog, Dog's Eye View... and yikes, Deep Blue Something). The Barenaked Ladies broke into their old apartment, Dishwalla counted blue cars, and Tracy Bonham just kept screaming at her mother. Joan Osborne had some questions about God... but World Pasta Day is this week, and we're more curious about the Flying Spaghetti Monster. So relax at your favorite coffee shop (that's certainly where we spent most of 1996) and enjoy the show. We hope you find it even better than Ezra.
This edition of the CHS show features yet another collection of eclectic songs and artists. This show also includes a live broadcast from the 13th annual classic car show in […]
In which we tell you all our thoughts on god. On this week's show, Danica and Brandon are floating like leaves in the wind and rolling their eyes at a whole lot of things. Our hearts are cold and dead! Our livers are swimming! It's a whole thing. Anyway, we watch "The Rings of Akhaten" which is hard to spell, and is full of tree hands and shenanigans. And is also fun. But you know, whatever. Also, there's cupcakes, for REASONS. Outro music is "Counting Blue Cars" by Dishwalla

Today we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of the Depeche Mode album, Violator. You will hear; Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence and some covers performed by Dishwalla and The Cure. Also today, some local music from Pato Banton, Common Sense and Missiles of October.
We've got the good, the sad and the lazy on the show this week! The good means that a Roseanne star and a rock star are new Moms, the sad means an r&b star has passed and how Kelly held it together, and the lazy is why we don't know when the new Offspring album is coming out... they don't either! Kelly's Trivia highlights the lowlights of hair that's too long on a guy, and Sharon's 9&1 has no $&@#% curse words. Janet Jackson, Dishwalla, Tone Loc and lots more, including hearing from Sharon's inner soulful balladeer! Where else, but on 90's NOW!! Thanks for listening!!
Today we have music mentoring with J R Richards from Dishwalla! He helps our protege (Vanaka) better understand how to turn their band into a BRAND!When I first launched the Vanaka project and the One Ride company, I went to a large law firm with a big reputation in the music business, thinking that would really provide some great support and key contacts. But I ended up relegated to a lawyer low on the totem pole who had little interest in my project, its purpose and me – and little patience for my lack of technical knowledge. After a couple more false starts, I finally found the right one-man firm interested in both me and my ideas. We formed a solid business relationship and a friendship, and he has been invaluable to me through the various issues of starting a band and a record label.Ann has actively advocated for women's issues throughout her career, particularly to expand women's opportunities in Corporate America. A graduate of Yale University and Columbia Law School, she is now a partner at the global law firm DLA Piper, where she maintains a full, corporate-law practice while also being actively involved with the Women's Initiative Program at the firm. The mother of two young children, Ann envisioned Pink51 while searching for retailers that combined quality products with a commitment to promoting women. The idea was to identify and champion corporations either owned by women or where women are substantively involved in the management of the company. By channeling a percentage of its proceeds to charities committed to the economic empowerment of women, Pink51 combines Ann's passions for women's advancement in the workplace and philanthropy. Ann is an avid traveler (with a particular fondness for Paris and Rome) and amateur chef. She lives in Pasadena, CA with her husband and kids, and enjoys volunteering in her community and is active in her childrens' schools.Marta is known to her team as the Master Connector. A proven professional entrepreneur, Marta currently is also the President of Starfish Impact, providing philanthropic advisory services to foundations, businesses and individuals who strive to make a greater impact in their community through strategic philanthropy. After working for Goldman Sachs & Co., she launched several companies including GOLS Soccer, Skin Haven and Market China. She holds an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management and double majored at Vassar College. Marta was the Co-Captain of the Women's Varsity Soccer Team and was the starting striker forward all four years. She holds Vassar College women's soccer records for goals scored, assists and total points. Marta played soccer throughout her 30's on two competitive teams and now spends her free time playing sports with her son and husband. As a philanthropist, Marta has been extremely active in her community since founding a nonprofit in high school, and specifically in the greater Los Angeles community with multiple nonprofit organizations including her current role as an LASVP Partner and Board Member. She also served on the Los Angeles Board of National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and was an active leader of Step Up Women's Network including her role as the Los Angeles President and Board Chair.

In this episode of Be The Change Puerto Rico we hear the voices of Congressmen from the last two territories admitted as States of the Union in 1959 - Hawaii and Alaska. We also hear the problem of disenfranchisement of American citizens that reside in US territories such as Guam and Puerto Rico. We hear the frustration of being able to participate in presidential primary elections, but not the presidential elections themselves & how this is not only incompatible with our democratic system, but with everything we stand for and that are willing to fight for in foreign soils.
