If I had to chose a week to be sick this would have been the one. That's because as lousy as I feel, watching the festivities out of Chicago for the DNC is making me feel so much better. Although the first night was a difficult act to follow, the Harris/Walz team did just that. With a number of moving and motivational speeches -- as expected from former President Barack Obama and the man who could have been one Bernie Sanders, the two that floored me were from the first Second Gentleman - and soon-to-be first First Gentleman Doug Emhoff and the knockout speech delivered by Michelle Obama. By the way, Doug Emhoff chose for his entrance and exit music one of my favorite songs, "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals. New Radicals released their one and only album in the late 90s, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too. It quickly rose to the top of my favorites of that year. I was Music Director and later Program Director of the radio station I worked for at the time, Los Angeles' Channel 103.1. And I was fortunate enough to interview Gregg Alexander, the man who was New Radicals. He didn't do many interviews, and never recorded another album, though he continued writing and producing for other artists, preferring to remain out of the spotlight. To honor our first Second Gentleman, and the man who will be our first First Gentleman, here's my interview with Gregg Alexander, recorded May 3, 1999 ( the day that my daughter was likely being born on the other side of the world in Kazakhstan... a story for another day)... Enjoy! I am still recuperating so will share with you a couple of full speeches from last night (can you guess which ones?) as well as some clips and observations as my still-on-the-mend psyche can conjure up. Either way, the chat room is open during the live show and we're partying like it's 2024!!!
Send us a Text Message. My Mom Is Here is the brainchild of Sam Seiff (vocals) and Nick Sare (keys), who suckered their talented Columbia jazz pal Aidan Speckhard (drums) into playing tunes with them on an NYC rooftop. Sam grew up pawing through her parents' extensive CD collection and her songwriting is thus inspired by artists like The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, New Radicals, and more. Nick started touring with his group, Melt the Band, while in college. Nick's experience playing alongside bands like Sammy Rae & The Friends, Lawrence, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Couch, and Karl Denson (The Rolling Stones), drives the group's developing sound. Keyboardist: Gail NoblesThe New Radical sent us a positive message. The New Radicals was an American alternative rock band formed in 1997 in Los Angeles. They recorded a song entitled You Get What You Give. It was the first and most successful single from their only studio album, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too (1998). Released on November 3, 1998, it reached number 36 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number eight on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. In 2006, Ice-T was asked on Late Night with Conan O'Brien about what he has heard, besides rap music, in the last few years that really grabbed him and his only reply was "You Get What You Give". In a Time interview, U2 lead guitarist the Edge is quoted saying "You Get What You Give" is the song he is "most jealous of. I really would love to have written that." Something about the song hit me too when I heard it. I was in the middle of a sad thought. It made me forget that thought. The song makes you want to do something. The song plants a seed of life. Those are the kind of songs we need that makes us want to go on living. ‘Songs like Get What You Give' by the New Radicals I'm Gail Nobles. Thank you for listening to the Cat Bear.

On the balance of probabilities this episode may be fit for human consumption, but then again it may need several AFL goal umpire reviews to determine if the content is in or out or has been touched. Brian is crowing, but not in Graham Kennedy style, because he is once again on top of Lenny's Fine Foods Tipping competition. Yes a week is a long time in football. Musically we head to 1999 and talk New Radicals, Chris Isaak and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers-rare gems in a field of mediocrity. The Deathalyser as always is sad, but this week also provides a moral dilemma. The time has come. I finally recorded an episode on my own. A first time here on the show. It was hard deciding although I did do an internet poll and 'top music videos of the 90s' won. This took me a while to get in the mood to do but I selected these videos not really as random but as a good representation of all these varying types of narratives that I loved in videos during my teenage years. I did some behind the scenes research and cruised some message boards to dig deeper. I basically talk about what these meant to me at a time when the art of the music video meant so much.Watch the music videos: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBOB4Hahu9llH-Gw2dGTjWMiiGt0_I4T1&si=M0-mgRBOJCaV85HY on Spotify : https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5dZ1Pt0xNpCY82KoJUzXIn?si=a38090cbad2e40bb--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! 1998 was the year of one hit wonders.Look it up, its simultaneously staggering and insane. For some reason though, one song stood out above the rest for me. When you combined the visuals of the New Radicals video for "You Only Get What You Give" with the song itself- you get a ready-made timepiece that signified the culmination of that decade's style through the vessel of a song that sounded nothing like that decade. To this day, I get butterflies in my stomach everytime I see that video- more because of the chaos in the mall atmosphere, so perfectly captured, and it's ability for me to reconcile my own feelings immediately with that moment in time. This is why it is such a good introductory piece in this special bonus series of Caught on the Mike episodes called: Timestamp.
Mark and Thom take a musical detour, diving into the fascinating world of one(ish) hit wonders. In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes to the Tuna on Toast studio.... the man who founded Warped Tour, Kevin Lyman!! Kevin tells Stryker about his life pre Warped Tour which included working Lollapalooza. Kevin worked as the artists liaison and stage manager among many of the hats he wore while working Lolla. Kevin tells Stryker about starting Warped Tour in 1995 and being totally broke after the tour. The price of tickets for the festival was $15.00! Kevin talks about talking to Fat Mike from NOFX and Fletcher from Pennywise to lock in their two bands for year two of Warped Tour. Kevin tells Stryker how Calvin Klein was almost the title sponsor before Vans became the main sponsor. Kevin tells Stryker how during the Warped Tour, Sugar Ray started selling 70,000 copies a week of their album Floored. Kevin and Mark McGrath had a chat about not only staying on the tour but continuing to play on the small stage even though the band was exploding with popularity. Kevin and Stryker chat about why Warped Tour took place outside and a daytime festival. He always wanted to pay homage to the past while moving forward. The bands that Kevin Lyman thought were great from day one were My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and AFI. Kevin talks about how Simple Plan played Warped 17 times while Less Than Jake played the festival the most! Kevin tells Stryker that 2017 was the year things on the Warped Tour went wrong, from the weather being terrible to the "youtube culture" to getting death threats on twitter based on some bands that were booked to play or bands that were not thrown off the tour. Kevin talks about losing sleep over the threats made to him and his family. In 2018, USC asked Kevin to teach, he's a full time professor teaching 5 classes! Kevin says "You can do good, and do good business!" When it comes to bands.....he says we need bands to stand for something! Kevin tells Stryker that he is on the board of the unopened Punk Rock Museum. Kevin tell Stryker exclusively that the museum in Vegas will open October 21st, the night before the "When We Were Young" festival kicks off. Kevin talks about Katy Perry being on Warped Tour and how New Radicals were a band that he liked that never got huge. He also was confused why G eazy does not mention his Warped Tour days. Kevin loves Yungblud! Kevin talks about Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit as well. Kevin Lyman is full of so much knowledge and is such a nice and generous dude. Thanks for watching and listening to another episode of Tuna on Toast with Stryker.
