In 2003, an incredible scientific milestone was achieved as the first human genome completed sequencing. For 20 years, this genome has been used as a reference by researchers for comparison to all other DNA sequences. Now, the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium is addressing the lack of genetic diversity starting with 47 new reference genomes. Members of the consortium, Dr Karen Miga, assistant professor, UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute and Dr Benedict Paten, associate professor, UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, join Roland to discuss the first stages of the project. For the first time the public will have access to thousands of documents from the Royal Society's historical collections following their digitisation. Science correspondent Vic Gill visits the vaults to see some of these pieces of history first hand. We are also taking a trip 30km above the Earth, to the stratosphere, where Daniel Bowman, principal scientist from Sandia National Laboratories, is using solar powered balloons to listen to the mysterious sounds of our planet. The conservative (and maybe Christian?) satire site Babylon Bee has had their Twitter account suspended for giving a trans woman their “Man of the Year” award. Babylon Bee says they're being punished for speaking the truth, but are they just being mean? And an essay in the Washington Post by Christine Emba says our sexual ethic of consent alone isn't working. Has she uncovered evidence that our secular culture is more receptive to Christian sexual ethics than we thought? Then Kaitlyn Schiess talks with author, poet, and English profess Daniel Bowman Jr. about his book, “On the Spectrum: Autism, Faith, & the Gifts of Neurodiversity.” Bowman, who is on the spectrum himself, dispels myths about autism and offers helpful ideas about how we can love those in our families and communities who are neurodiverse. Welcome to episode thirty-five of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by two people who help me have an important and thoughtful conversation about the church's ministry and inclusion of people with autism and other forms of neurodiversity. My first guest is Daniel Bowman Jr. – Associate Professor of English at Taylor University. Professor Bowman is a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College and has Master's Degrees from The University of Cincinnati and Seattle Pacific University. He has published a collection of poems entitled A Plum Tree in Leatherstocking County and has written for a number of literary publications and journals. Our conversation centers around his brand new book from Brazos Press entitled On the Spectrum: Autism, Faith, and the Gift of Neurodiversity. It is an excellent book that is semi-biographical – telling the story of his self-discovery of being on the autism spectrum – as well as reflecting with others about how the church can both bless and be blessed by sharing life with people who embody various forms of neurodiversity. My second guest is my longtime friend and former ministry colleague from Pasadena First days – Rev. Julie Keith. Julie is now the Associate Pastor of Children and Families as the Tahachapi Church of the Nazarene in Central California. Pastor Julie has spent several years ministering to both children and adults with autism or other unique needs, and she has wonderful advice for how churches can include people in all of our uniqueness and diversity as well as minister to families navigating life that now includes autism or other cognitive or emotional challenges. It is a little bit of a different episode and conversation this week, but one that is increasingly important and I hope beneficial as we attempt to be the Body of Christ celebrating and including all of unique and essential members of the body. Here are my conversations with Professor Daniel Bowman and Pastor Julie Keith.

Nearly everyone knows someone on the autism spectrum, yet most of what people think they know about autism is wrong. Author, poet, and professor Daniel Bowman Jr. joins us for a conversation on how autism and other neurodiversities interact with our faith and relationships, and how neurodiversity can be received as a gift to ourselves […] The post Daniel Bowman Jr. on Autism, Faith, and the Gifts of Neurodiversity appeared first on Gravity Leadership.

Today on the podcast is author, teacher and creative Daniel Bowman Jr. Dan recently released his incredible book detailing his story of discovering he is autistic as an adult. On the Spectrum: Autism, Faith & the Gifts of Neurodiversity. gives an inside look at Dan's struggle as a neurodiverse person living in a neurotypical world, and the constant fight of trying to force his mind and his body to work in a way that it is not wired to. The world often frames people on the spectrum as a problem to be fixed instead of a person to be understood, and in our conversation, as well as his book, Dan shares what this journey has been like for him and also how God has shown him the gifts that his uniqueness offers in his life through the creative arts, how he teaches and more. All of us, neurotypical or neurodiverse are perfectly and wonderfully made, on purpose by God, and when we live fully in who we are and who we were created to be we can draw nearer to Him and invite others to do likewise alongside us. I really love Dan's perspectives on life, and he's the professor we all want because he loves to teach us not only ways to dive deep in the learning process, but wants to push us to be the best version of ourselves as we learn. I love this beautiful summation from his book: “The last thing anyone on the spectrum needs is a limited-and limiting- range of images in the public's awareness about what it means to be autistic. While I celebrate any austic person who has earned acclaim, I also see an urgent need to move beyond a handful of iconic narratives. So let us continue to add our voices, perspectives, and unique stories. Let us give one another the gift of our diversity, and in doing so, reveal our shared dignity.” Amen and amen. You matter, friend. Your story matters. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story. Since the ascension of Jesus and the birth of the church at Pentecost, the followers of Christ have experienced persecution and martyrdom, established orthodoxy and orthopraxy, endured internal division and social upheaval, and sought to proclaim the good news "to the end of the earth." How can we possibly begin to grasp the complexity of the church's story? (Katherine May) "...lights the path toward greater understanding, better advocacy, and a compelling vision for inclusion that moves beyond stereotypes and tokenism." Today’s program, and programs to come, will focus on randomly chosen topics, ranging from elements of the natural world to particular ideas. In programs to come I also plan to read poems I just happen to like. So there might be a little bit less of a scholarly and academic overview in my coming programs and more of a celebration of good work within a defined context. Because it’s raining in Connecticut as I write this program, I’d like to read some poems today that together present varied symbolic perspectives and representations of rain. Today’s poems are by William Butler Yeats, Daniel Bowman, David Breeden, and Jerry Craven. I end the program with excerpts from my book St. Brigid’s Well.
