You know how they tell you that websites and apps follow your every move and then design their product to get the most out of you? And you know how each and every time a digital product gets updated it gets worse and harder to use? How can both of these be true? Well, let me get you in on a Product Analytics secret: It's true that most websites and apps collect your data, but most of them just let it rot in dashboards nobody looks at, and release major features and redesigns without performing any mathematically rigorous analysis of the users' response. This is only one of many reasons why it's so hard to be autistic in Tech. My Product Analytics ex-colleague, Carolina (pronouns: she/they), will join me on this episode to rant with all our accumulated frustrations about the sad sad fact that most digital product providers really don't care about your data, and also just in general about being autistic in Tech. You can find Carolina on Instagram @millenialspinster Language note: The words Shit and Bullshit are being said a few times in the episode. Summary: In this first episode of the year, the guys crack open the idea of what it means to be new—not just with gym memberships and resolutions, but deep in the rewiring of old patterns, assumptions, and emotional blind spots. Dan kicks things off by admitting his old “default setting” was to walk in the door wondering what he'd done wrong—proof that sometimes the battlefield is the hallway between the garage and the living room. From there, Jeremy confesses his own default: being right about everything. But a surprising comment from his son at a hockey game (“There's so much more going on than what's on TV”) hits him like a puck to the head and opens up a whole new way of seeing relationships. Kevin brings in the pastor's line, “Do you want to be right, or do you want to win?”—and discovers that relational victory doesn't always mean keeping score. Dan, meanwhile, reflects on curiosity as an antidote to assumption, while Jeff learns that geology may rock, but people matter more. Between dad jokes about rock stars, cul-de-sacs, and Fraggle Rock sing-alongs, the group lands somewhere between reflection and revelation: Becoming aware of your patterns.Accepting feedback without self-defense.Taking action toward connection, not correction. By the end, they circle back to hope. If yesterday was about living on autopilot, this year is about choosing manual drive. “Participating in my own discovery,” Dan quips, “gives me the opportunity to participate in my own recovery.” So whether you're trying to read a face, repair a marriage, or just survive mornings before coffee, this conversation reminds you—every default can be rewritten. Pull Quotes “There's so much more going on than what's on the screen.”“Do you want to be right, or do you want to win?”“Participating in my own discovery gives me the opportunity to participate in my own recovery.” #justtheguys #danholmes #actuallyautistic #neurodiversecoupletips #neurodiverse men
Originally recorded in 2019, this episode of Converge Autism Radio continues to resonate years later as conversations around late-diagnosed autistic women, masking, trauma, and identity have come into sharper focus. In Autism in Women: Late Diagnosis, Masking, and the Minds That Move Us Forward, we speak with Madonna Kilpatrick, a late-diagnosed autistic woman whose background spans anthropology, sociology, theater, improvisation, stand-up comedy, and museum education.Referred to the show by Dr. Mark Goulston, Madonna brings both intellectual rigor and lived experience to a deeply human conversation about what it means to discover your neurodivergence in adulthood—after decades of navigating the world without language for your wiring. Together, we explore high masking, stigma, creativity as survival, the overlap between trauma and neurodivergence, and how autistic cognition has quietly shaped culture, innovation, and progress all along. Madonna reflects on school, theater, intelligence, social expectations, and the cost of being misread for most of one's life—and what becomes possible when clarity finally arrives. This conversation predates much of today's mainstream dialogue around late diagnosis, yet it anticipates many of the insights now widely discussed: the limits of functioning labels, the emotional toll of masking, and the urgent need for more humane, nuanced understandings of autism—especially in women. Editor's NotesThis episode was recorded in 2019. Some terminology used reflects common clinical and cultural language of that time.References to terms such as “high-functioning” appear in the conversation. Current best practice emphasizes support needs and lived experience rather than functioning labels.Mentions of Asperger's / Asperger syndrome reflect diagnostic language in use at the time of recording. Today, these traits are understood within Autism Spectrum Disorder. These notes are included for context, not correction. The lived experiences and insights shared in this episode remain valid and valuable. This episode remains widely shared because it captures something timeless: the relief, grief, humor, and self-recognition that often accompany late diagnosis—and the realization that the minds once labeled “too much,” “too strange,” or “too intense” are often the very minds that move humanity forward.www.springbrookbehavioral.comwww.convergeautism.comwww.allabilitiesnofilter.com
In this heart-opening conversation, NeuroDuo's Lauren and Tom share how their late diagnoses of autism and ADHD transformed not only their individual lives but their relationship, creativity, and self-acceptance. They talk about battling stigma, navigating sensory overload, and learning to create content that mirrors their real experience—not performative or polished, but real, resonant, and healing. From clock ticks in an assessment room to the quiet validation of knowing you're not alone, this episode explores how authenticity becomes therapy—and how being understood can change everything.linktr.ee/neuroduoBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mental-health-news-radio--3082057/support.

Today, Dr. Holmes talks with Occupational Therapist, Kelly Mahler. The topic is interoception! Every neurotype can struggle with it but we find neurodivergent folks can have a few more challenges with interoception.Defined by Kelly's website: Many people notice these feelings in their body with the help of an important sense… a sense called (drum roll please)… interoception.Don't let the name fool you. The word interoception might not sound very sexy or important. But this sense is a really big deal. Interoception has a huge influence on many areas of our lives like self-regulation, mental health and social connection.About our Guest:Kelly Mahler OTD, OTR/L, earned a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Misericordia University, Dallas, PA. This episode originally aired on December 20, 2022, under the title “Fairy Tales are Autistic.”Angela's all-time favorite episode! #ActuallyAutistic co-hosts discuss how HCA used imaginative stories to reframe common Autistic traits (that we're frequently bullied for) as treasured gifts.“We are not defective neurotypicals. We are not ugly ducklings. We are swans. We do swan things. We don't do duck things.”“They claim that we have no empathy—we are just overwhelmed a lot by emotion because they're so big for us.”“It's all about the research because, god, we love the research.”“They did these brain scans, and it turns out that neurotypical people tune out 98% of all sensory data. 98%. And we don't.”“The world is overwhelming for us. It's chaotic. #ActuallyAutistic podcast hosts, Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP, interview Dr. Kade Sharp to discuss the ways that kink fits into Autistic culture. * What is kink (spoiler: it's not necessarily sexual!), what are some common kinks, and are “kinksters” dangerous or ill?* The fundamental flaws in most research methods that explore Autistic sexuality.* Stereotypes and misunderstandings that most people have about the kink community.* Kinky spreadsheets and other Autistic systems of communicating comfort and consent.* Honoring sensory differences, connecting through SPINs, defined expectations, and other ways that the kink community appeals to so many autistics.* How kink helps neurodivergent folks to feel empowered—regardless of whether or not they identify as a kinkster. * Tips on exploring kink with partners, finding kinky folks to explore with, and getting kinky solo.“I think I just found out I'm kinky.”“I think a lot of your listeners are going to find that out today.”“Someone asked if he was my biological son. And I said, ‘why, yes.' And somebody was like, ‘well, how did you make him?' And…It occurred to me while answering this question: there is a big myth out there that we do not have the sex.”“Kink is not just sexual. So, in fact, a good proportion of the folks that responded to my eligibility survey for the study were on the aro/ace spectrum.”“There's so much unspoken stuff and so much resentment because allistic partners say, ‘You should know what I want,' or that kind of nonsense. But when you explicitly negotiate and have spreadsheets regarding everything from eye contact to butt stuff, it makes relationships run a lot smoother.”Are you an Autistic kinkster? Listeners will learn how leaders from marginalized groups - specifically, neurodivergent leaders - can change the old "rules" and lead authentically, without assimilating. Ludmila N. Praslova, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, is the author of “The Canary Code: A Guide to Neurodiversity, Dignity, and Intersectional Belonging at Work” (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, April 2024). A Professor of Graduate Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Accreditation Liaison Officer at Vanguard University of Southern California, she is a global inclusive talent strategy expert with extensive experience in global diversity and neurodiversity. Her current consulting is focused on creating organizational systems for inclusion and wellbeing and providing neuroinclusion training and support to organizations such as Amazon, Bank of America, IBM, MIT, and Affinity Health. She regularly writes for Harvard Business Review, Fast Company and Psychology Today, and is the first person to have published in Harvard Business Review from an autistic perspective.Neurodivergent people are marginalized by society and often excluded in the workplace. And yet, there are many people who look for authenticity and fresh solutions to problems "the old leadership" has not solved. #ActuallyAutistic podcast hosts, Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP, discuss their complicated feelings around Christmas—there is holiday magic but also overstimulation, family stress, and past trauma. They talk about Christmas TV specials that resonate with autistic experiences, like Charlie Brown feeling overwhelmed while others find joy, or the Grinch hating loud noises. They talk about Autistic glimmers (the opposite of triggers) like time with special interests, sensory delights, and routines; using the example of Matt's son who loves Christmas villages and light decorations. They also validate the seasonal triggers like excessive noise, increased social expectations, gift-giving misalignments, and food sensitivities.“Every gift you receive is a risk and then every gift you give is a risk. And…expectation sensitivity and Christmas, it's hard to find that magic…I think that's like the lights, like…Every year, the lights are pretty much the same. Yes! and I get so excited to see them every year.” - AngelaThey analyze Santa Claus' many Autistic traits and discuss certain elements of Christmas stories that reflect Autistic characteristics. Connections are drawn between neurodivergent people feeling excluded for being "different," and outcast characters like Rudolph and Hermie the elf/dentist.“It very much resonates with neurodivergent people and, you know, people who have been excluded for being different—even though our differences matter and our differences are valuable. Because we need dentists in the world. We need bright lights in the fog. Because just by being like the other ‘normal' reindeer, Santa would have failed.” - MattThe hosts emphasize wishing for more openness and peace during the holidays and the entire year. Matt shares another “Autistica” story he wrote about an Autistic child who meets a magical Christmas dragon that understands him when Santa could not. The dragon embodies acceptance, celebration of difference, and bringing people joy.“The dragon huffed and it puffed and held its breath for a bit, and all of a sudden, this dragon was lit. The dragon's horns and its spikes lit up every hue. The boy basked in the glow. What a marvelous view.” - The Christmas Dragon, by MattWhat are some of your holiday glimmers? Exploring Neurodiversity with Adina Levy from Play. Learn. Chat
In this episode, we dive into the specifics of what a Neurodiversity Affirming approach looks like when supporting social interactions for autistic children. The key point is that we do not want to teach neurodivergent children that they need to act more neurotypical. This means all our goals, therapy approaches and resources need to teach that autistic children might be different, and socialise in different (but not wrong) ways to neurotypical kids. We need to stop sending the message that kids are missing social skills... because they DO have social skills, just different perhaps from neurotypical social skills. We discuss that boundaries can still apply to autistic kids' communication & interactions (it's not OK to hurt others, physically or emotionally!), but we need to pause and think carefully about why we are asking a child to change. The traditional approach of teaching autistic children that they are wrong, different, and weird in a bad way is not acceptable any more. We talk about the issue with asking children to 'fit in'. So what should we do? We should focus on truly seeing neurodivergent children for who they are, what they enjoy, and help them be surrounded by people who appreciate them. We should teach self-awareness. We should teach self-advocacy. Tune in for these ideas and more! If you found this episode helpful, please share it with a friend, family member or a colleague! Links

So… you're ready to be part of the Neurodiversity Affirming movement to support an autistic and neurodivergent child in your world. Awesome, welcome in! The language you use matters. I'm kicking off this podcast series by sharing the language that you need to put in the bin, and the language to use instead. In today's episode, we delve into neurodiversity versus neurodivergent, why identity first language is preferred by most autistic people. We discuss getting comfortable with the term ‘autistic' rather than ‘on the spectrum' and why ‘high-functioning' & ‘low-functioning' terms should be left in the past. Tune in for these ideas and more! In this episode, you'll learn: One person with a different type of brain from others is neurodivergent, while a group of people can be neurodiverse Being autistic doesn't have to be limiting or a problem. The problems arise when an autistic person lives in a world that does not support and accommodate their needs Why we should drop the D (Disorder) in ASD It's not a compliment to refer to an autistic person as high-functioning - this negates someone's internal experience and only describes your opinion of how ‘normal' they appear to you Referring to an autistic person as low-functioning indicates low expectations of them, and it's an awful term. Get the free Cheatsheet PDF highlighting the terms that you should and shouldn't use when talking about autism and neurodiversity - https://playlearnchat.ck.page/48f9b202e1 Transcript available on my website: https://playlearnchat.com/podcast-1 If you found this episode helpful, please share it with a friend, family member or a colleague! Hello, I'm Phil.I am an #ActuallyAutistic (and #ProbablyADHD) aspiring lawyer, content creator, writer, speaker, and workplace neurodiversity inclusion consultant.I love to talk about and engage in all things law and the legal sphere, particularly around Employment law, disability inclusion, autism, ADHD, and wider neurodiversity including meaningful inclusion in workplaces and learning how other neurodivergents can leverage their own strengths and abilities to make work and life work for them and for us all!Over the last 5 years, I have gained experience and expertise in a range of practice areas including Employment law, Commercial Property, Debt Recovery, Corporate law and Litigation, and developed my skills in drafting documents and agreements, research, giving commercial advice, clear communication, and community building in the legal community.I write articles and blogs and create content for my own platform The Neurodivergent Lawyer, for LawCareers.net, and for anyone else who wants to hear from me and share my experiences and my knowledge around law and neurodivergence. In 2022 I worked with a handful of public organisations and institutions to assess their face-to-face and virtual interview and application processes and recommend things they can do to make these processes more inclusive of neurodivergent staff, clients and members of the public. The delegates and representatives from these organisations came away with a greater understanding of the autistic and neurodivergent experience and have been implementing my recommendations for the benefit of their staff, clients and the wider public. For my articles published by LawCareers.net, please see here:https://www.lawcareers.net/Explore/Blog/Phil-SteventonFor my own content published through my own website, please see below:Website: https://philjsteventon46.wixsite.com/neurodivergentlawyerLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-steventon-mcilex-aa148a55Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/philjstev89 and https://www.instagram.com/neurodivergentlawyer
In this episode of The Autistic Culture Podcast:Two Autistic celebrities, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Banneker, were instrumental in the design and layout of the beautiful (and symmetrical) Washington D.C.Benjamin Banneker was a self-educated African American mathematician and astronomer who was brought in by Jefferson to help survey and plan the city. His logical, systematic approach resulted in the orderly grid layout of streets and quadrants that makes navigating D.C. straightforward (if you can see the pattern).Jefferson and Banneker connected as fellow Autistics and Banneker challenged Jefferson to take action against slavery and promote racial equality. Though Jefferson was sympathetic, he did not take bold action due to political considerations. “But Autistic people often will see the—I don't know—genius, or the skills, or the talents of other Autistic people.” —AngelaThe podcast hosts analyze how Autistic traits are evident in the accomplishments and personalities of both men, like intense focus, pattern recognition, and a strong call to social advocacy. They highlight Autistic giftedness and the empathy that Autistics can have for each other (“the double empathy problem”), as well as the difficulties masking and fitting in can cause.“Yeah, this is a common, allistic, erroneous belief because studies have shown that allistic researchers, when interacting with autistic people—because they misread our natural body language, they misread our natural tone, they misread our Autistic accents—they erroneously believe that we don't have empathy because it turns out, they did not have empathy for us.” —MattBanneker and Jefferson shared special interests and supported each other's careers despite years of fighting about the key social justice issue of the time—ending the enslavement of fellow humans. On this virtual culture trip, the #ActuallyAutistic hosts conclude that D.C.'s logical design and early influences make it an inherently Autistic city.Do you have Autistic justice sensitivity? In this episode of The Autistic Culture Podcast:Actually Autistic hosts Matt and Angela discusses Autistic culture in the workplace, using the early years of George Lucas' company Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) as an example of an ideal Autistic workspace.Lucas wanted his 1977 film Star Wars to include visual effects that had never been seen on film before. ILM attracted talented Autistic creators because the company valued skills over formal credentials and allowed employees to explore and experiment within their special interests to create new technology and materials. A flexible schedule and a lack of preconceived notions allowed them to indulge their monotropic focus and achieve greatness. “I think that in order to have an autistic-friendly workplace, you have to acknowledge the individual strengths and weaknesses of everybody involved and create an environment that allows everyone to thrive and recharge as needed.” —MattAutistic people often have intense special interests and benefit from working in environments that allow them to tap into hyperfocus states. Rigid 9-5 jobs may not be accommodating. Autistics tend to view money as a tool to acquire interests rather than for status. At ILM, making cool things was the priority.“One of the things I've been working on just in terms of having a workplace that I want to be friendly to neurodivergence, not just my own, is this idea that the most valuable thing we actually have is time.” –AngelaCommunication styles differ between Autistic and neurotypical people. Direct Autistic communication can be misinterpreted by allistics, and likewise, the allistic tendency to talk around an issue is confusing and frustrating for Autistics. The hosts share an example of the "double empathy problem" where an Autistic action was misconstrued by a neurotypical. Clear communication is key in making mixed-neurotype relations successful. This episode, #ActuallyAutistic podcast hosts, Matt and Angela, discusses how Autistic-friendly workplaces that leverage Autistic strengths like monotropic focus can enable Autistic people to thrive and make innovative contributions. Finding meaning and joy in one's work is central to Autistic culture.Do you love to create and world build? Tell us about it in the comments!Did an Autistic celebrity invent motion pictures? Masking is something we all do to project an "acceptable" version of ourselves - but for those of us who are autistic, it can feel like something we do to survive. It's hard for families and friends to spot, let alone educational and medical professions, yet masking can lead to misdiagnosis and burnout so it's vital we all understand it. Our autistic guests Kieran Rose, Dr Amy Pearson and Jodie Smitten explain what masking looks like, why people do it, and how difficult it is to stop.Music: AukestraEditing: Niall Hegarty

The #ActuallyAutistic Guide to Advocacy takes an in-depth look at the key elements of effective, respectful, inclusive advocacy and allyship. Every topic was chosen, shaped and informed by #ActuallyAutistic perspectives. The step-by-step guide discusses various aspects of how autism is perceived, explores how best to speak up for individual needs and introduces advocacy for the wider autistic community. Each step outlines one vital aspect of advocacy and allyship, such as emphasizing acceptance, avoiding assumptions and assuming competence. The advice and strategies laid out in this guide center the wisdom and experiences of autistic people and enable the listener to confidently speak up with insight and understanding.
April is Autism Acceptance Month. There's a lot of misconceptions about autism, and I reached out to an #ActuallyAutistic mental health provider, Dr. Kris, to talk about their experiences (and difficulty) getting their diagnosis as an adult. We also talk about the mind body connection, the importance of inclusion, and the double empathy problem.
Evidence shows that neurodivergency occurs at a higher rate amongst people with hypermobility disorders. And we know that anxiety is also prevalent in the hypermobile population. When we look at neurodivergency, hypermobility, anxiety, and dysautonomia, we see hints of lines drawn between them. Might science soon be able to connect the dots? Jessica Eccles, senior clinical academic psychiatrist at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and specialist in brain-body neuroscience, returns to speak with Bendy Bodies about neurodivergency, hypermobility, and possible links with anxiety and the autonomic nervous system. In February 2022, Dr. Eccles published the peer reviewed journal article, "Joint hypermobility links neurodivergence to dysautonomia and pain". She discusses the fascinating results of her research, and explains why neurodivergency, dysautonomia, and pain appear to be connected via joint hypermobility. Dr. Eccles shares her findings of higher levels of musculoskeletal symptoms in the study's neurodivergent population vs the comparison group, and wonders if this may be a potential reason why people with neurodivergency experience more health symptoms. She explains the importance of raising awareness of the link between joint hypermobility and neurodivergency in the medical community, and discusses how anxiety is linked to joint hypermobility and possibly autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Dr. Eccles shares her work on the ADAPT program, a program aimed at reducing anxiety with a combined brain-body approach in hypermobile people. Still in its early stages, the program (Altering Dynamics of Autonomic Processing Therapy) has fascinating implications. Finally, Dr. Eccles reveals her current research projects and shares her hopes for future research. An incredible, accessible discussion by one of the top researchers in this field, this is an episode not to be missed. #neurodivergency #BendyBrain #dysautonomia #AutonomicNervousSystem #anxiety #ActuallyAutistic #adhd #ADHDAwareness #ASD #AutisticPride #DisabilityInclusion #RedInstead #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness #neurodivergent #AutisticAdults #neurodiversity #autistic #autism #BendyBodies #BendyBodiesPodcast #JenniferMilner #ZebraStrong #hypermobility #HypermobilityDisorders

Eric Michael Garcia is an autistic journalist whose new book is We're Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation. Garcia is the senior Washington correspondent for The Independent, following editorial roles at the Washington Post and The Hill. He's also been a correspondent for National Journal, MarketWatch, and Roll Call, and has written for The Daily Beast, The New Republic, and Salon.com. As a child, he was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is now diagnosed under the broader ASD (autism spectrum disorder). We talked about the history of the autism diagnosis, how it has evolved, how the language around it has changed, and how autistic people are using social media (like the #ActuallyAutistic hashtag on Twitter) to speak out in a media ecosystem that historically marginalized or ignored them. On this episode, more thoughts on Mark Rober's April 30 celebrity "Color the Spectrum" event, the counter-fundraiser #AutisticNow organized by the #ActuallyAutistic community on the same day, and why we care so dang much about the next generation or our neurokin not growing up traumatized in the name of support (weird this has to be explained but okay). Plus: got my second pfizer dose (yay!), time travel, meta commentary, and some not-so-subtle shade at the wellness industrial complex. Thank you for being
