Clyde Shields'ın hemodiyaliz sırasında çekilen bir fotoğrafı. 9 Mart 1960'da, kronik böbrek yetmezliğinden ölüm döşeğinde olan Clyde Shields, Seattle'daki Üniversite Hastanesinde hemodiyaliz almaya başladığında, Scribner’ın bir hayali gerçeğe dönmektedir: Radyal arter ile bir önkol venini bağlayan harici bir şant kullanarak, kronik böbrek yetmezliği olan hastalarda tekrarlanan tedavilerin mümkün olması... Teflon tüpler yakın zamanda piyasaya çıkmıştır ve bir kalp damar cerrahından, dokular tarafından iyi tolere edildiği için teflonun kalp pili tellerinin etrafında kullanıldığını duyar. Cerrah kendisini  Wayne Quinton'a yönlendirir. Quinton, hastanın anatomisine uyacak şekilde Teflon tüpleri bükerek kanüller yapabilecek bir teknik geliştirir. Pediatrik kalp cerrahı David Dillard, Clyde'a şantı yerleştirir. Bu ilk diyaliz 76 saat sürer ve böylece 20. yüzyılın en önemli tıbbi gelişmelerinden biri başlamış olur. 4 hafta sonra Clyde'ın Teflon şantı. Üzerinde plastik koruyucu kapak bulunan paslanmaz çelik bir kol plakasına tutturulmuştur. Clyde'ın tedavisi o kadar başarılı olur ki, Nisan ayında Scribner onu, karısı Emmie'yi ve Quinton'u Atlantic City'deki ASAIO yıllık toplantısına götürür. Clyde’nin ilk diyalizi Mart ayında olduğu için, toplantıda sunabilecek bir makalesi yoktur. Scribner hastasını meslektaşlarıyla tanıştırır ve Quinton şant yapmak için Teflon tüplerin nasıl bükülebileceğini gösterir. ASAIO Transactions editörü Schreiner bu durumdan o kadar etkilenmiştir ki, Cemiyet tarihinde ilk ve tek olarak toplantıda sunulmayan bir makaleyi yayınlar. Scribner; tıp derneğinden aldığı destekle, dünyanın ilk hastane dışı kar amacı gütmeyen günübirlik diyaliz merkezini, İsveç Hastanesi hemşireleri yurdunun bodrumunda kurar. 1 Ocak 1962'de, 3 yataklı Seattle Yapay Böbrek Merkezi (SAKC), Kiil diyalizörleri ve yerel bir dondurma makinesi üreticisi olan Sweden Freezer tarafından yapılan tanklarda soğutulmuş diyalizat kullanarak haftada iki gece diyaliz gerçekleştirecek şekilde açılır. Artık ortada hayat kurtarma potansiyeli olan bir tedavi vardır. Ancak bu umut ışığı, ağır bir soruyu da beraberinde getirmektedir: Bu tedaviden kimler yararlanacak? Öyle ya, o gün için tedavisi olmayan ölümcül bir hastalık olarak kabul edilen böbrek yetmezliğinden binlerce insan muzdariptir. Hepsi de bu tedaviyi bir umut ışığı olarak görür. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has been a great resource for our community since its first predecessor opened in 1891 on South Tryon Street. Replaced 10 years later by one of the famous Carnegie Libraries, a public library in Charlotte has now stood on the same site in uptown since 1903. The Library's reach has since expanded to all corners of our county through 20 branches, a children's library, and digital access. But right now -- the city/county library is making big plans for that original site on Tryon Street, for a NEW main library. It's an ambitious, 3-year, $135-million-dollar private-public partnership, and we are full of questions about it. Luckily, David Dillard from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is here to tell us what we need to know!
