This week we profile someone that never became world number one or captured a Grand Slam, but accomplished something no other player has . David Nalbandian defied explanation, until you saw what he could do on the court when everything was just ‘right.' We saw that happen in 2007 at the Madrid Open when he became the first and only person to beat Nadal, Djokovic and Federer at the same tournament. Sick of hearing all the ads? Items discussed: Who's hot? Who's not? When will Andy Murray retire? Rafa and Nole back at Indian Wells, will it be the last time they both come together? Jakub Mensik... how good is this kid?
A deleitarse.
A escucharla.

The final of the Aegon Championships is upon us, and although it might lack the top 3 seeds Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic, who all lost on Tuesday, the Tennis Podcast team is predicting an emotional day.The previous final appearance of Feliciano Lopez, in 2014, ended in an agonising loss in a final set tie-break. That was after he had held match point, and it hurt the Spaniard more than just any other loss in his career. 'I’ve wanted to win this tournament so badly throughout my whole career," Lopez told Catherine Whitaker. "Now I have another chance," she saiidMarin Cilic has reached the final before, and won the tournament. The only problem is that nobody can remember any of the tennis in it. On that day, his opponent, David Nalbandian was disqualied for kicking a wooden sponsor box that injured the leg of a lines judge. Cilic is in for a very busy day. After the singles final he plays the conclusion of his doubles semifinal against Jamie Murray and Bruno... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In Episode 57, Ben and Courtney have no ketchup, but plenty of tennis in Asia! What do our protagonists make of the action in Tokyo, and the surprising results of Kvitova, Venus, and Azarenka? And what about Genie Bouchard, and the showcase-less cohort of young women she seems to be leading at the moment? And what of the Asian swing in general? Precious or pointless? Then we discuss the retirement announcement of David Nalbandian, which flows us nicely into a discussion of who is the "best" player never to have won a Grand Slam title. Then we take a number, which is usually short and straightforward, but hardly was this time around. Take this one from the top. As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and leaving us reviews on iTunes! We've always thought you're second to none too, dear listeners.
What should we make of David Nalbandian's polarizing career, Li Na's play at the China Open, and Rafael Nadal's indoor swing? All the answers on the podcast, with Ed McGrogan, Richard Pagliaro, and Peter Bodo. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
James Waterson and Lauren Lynch report on the day’s news from day seven of the US Open. Rafael Nadal beat David Nalbandian 7-6, 6-1, 7-5, then suffered cramps in his post-match press conference that forced him to lie down on the ground (making most there think he “collapsed”). After his episode, Nadal said that he was suffering severe cramps on both sides of his legs, and that he was going to be alright. Meanwhile, Donald Young beat Juan Ignacio Chela to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, and Andy Roddick took down Julien Benneteau in straight sets. Finally, Andy Murray and Roger Federer qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals last week, joining Novak Djokovic and Rafal Nadal as the four who have qualified.
Lauren Lynch reports the latest tennis news from Wimbledon. Novak Djokovic will be on top of the rankings and the new defending champion at Wimbledon for the first time after defeating Rafael Nadal. He has compiled a 48-1 record. Jurgen Melzer and Iveta Benesova took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Vesnina without dropping a set. Tennis Now will be live at Davis Cup quarterfinal. David Nalbandian has withdrawn from Argentina’s Davis Cup quarterfinal against Kazakhstan due to a hematoma.
