Tennis Channel commentator Mark Petchey joins the podcast to recap the 500 level tournaments on the pro tennis tour, which saw some surprises and some predictable greatness. Petchey explains how Denis Shapovalov was able to defeat three Top 10 players en route to a title in Dallas, and why the Canadian has to be true to his aggressive playing style. The broadcaster also analyzes what makes Carlos Alcaraz so lethal as he won the tournament in Rotterdam, and compares his ceiling to that of World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. And Petchey breaks down new mom Belinda Bencic's incredible title win in Abu Dhabi, an event she has not lost a match at! Petchey also runs through a litany of topics including Andy Murray's coaching role with Novak Djokovic lasting through Wimbledon, the Serbians quick recovery from an injury, and American Reilly Opelka speaking out against an umpire. The broadcaster also gives his take on electronic line calling, the Golden Swing events mulling a surface switch, and what to expect at the WTA Premier event in Doha. Hosted by Mitch Michals.

This week Aidan and Erik discuss the last week in tennis which featured two ATP 500 tournaments. Starting off with Dallas, there were some surprising runs, like Denis Shapovalov making it to the final, while Casper Ruud was able to impressively back up his ranking in a tournament many expected him to go out early. In Europe, Medvedev continued his dismal season while shocker Belucci made a run. But in the end, it seemed inevitable that Alcaraz would come out on top. Be sure to check back next week for another episode!
It was a big week for Canadian tennis... Denis Shapovalov secured the biggest title of his career by winning the Dallas Open! Meanwhile, 18-year-old Victoria Mboko has started the year an incredible 17-0 with three ITF titles. On this week's episode of Match Point Canada, Mike catches up with Mboko to discuss her rise up the rankings and development as she closes in on the top 200. Ben and Mike break down Shapovalov's incredible run in Dallas as he toppled three top 10 players, Carlos Alcaraz's win in Rotterdam, and check in on the action in Doha. Tennis meets Super Bowl! It's been another memorable week on and off the tennis circuit as hot off the press Serena Williams graced all our TV screens crip walking (!) to Kendrik Lamar at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Back on the tour, Carlos Alcaraz caught a cold as well as his first ever indoor hard court title with a win in Rotterdam to equal Rafael Nadal, and Belinda Bencic enjoying another successful week in Abu Dhabi, this time as a Mother, to win her 9th career title in just her fourth event back from maternity leave.Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov stormed to the Dallas Open title, defeating 3 Top 10 players en route and reminding us all of his immense talents, whilst Anastasia Potapova clinched the Translyvania Open, an event at which we saw one of the most successful WTA players of the 2010s, Simona Halep, retire.Chris also tests Kim and Joel's knowledge of indoor Champions with a new Par for The Courts, and they discuss all the recent tennis x Super Bowl madness on Super Bowl Sunday with the aforementioned Serena Williams popping up plus a Roger Federer TV ad spot with 'Elmo' from Sesame Street.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods.
They're heading back to Malaga! Team Canada enjoyed a big week in Manchester, winning Group D and booking their spot in the Davis Cup Finals this November. Tumaini Carayol, journalist from The Guardian, joins Ben and Mike to recap the action, including big performances from Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime. We also discuss a coaching change for Naomi Osaka, Novak Djokovic's priorities, and a big performance from Marina Stakusic in Guadalajara. All of that and more on our latest episode of MPC!
It was an extraordinary second day at the US Open. Catherine, David and Matt cover Jasmine Paolini coming back to beat Bianca Andreescu, Noami Osaka's awesome performance and statement outfit, Dan Evans winning the longest match in US Open history, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner both dropping sets, the lost generation of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, Iga Swiatek's struggles with the schedule, and the end of Danielle Collins' Grand Slam singles career. Get ready for some slightly obnoxious U S A chants (and one ITALIA chant) in this week's episode! Carlos Alcaraz's incredible summer ends with a silver medal and Novak Djokovic finally claims the gold medal. (Maybe now he'll leave us alone. Unlikely, but we can dream.) We loved that Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz took home bronze, while doubles' specialists came through in the gold medal match. Andy Murray has officially retired (making this the second of the Big 4 to be sent off into the sunset by an American doubles team) and the Queen's Club already renamed their center court after him. Story of the week, however, goes to Katarina Siniakova and guest! (Tomas Machac, for the uninitiated) These exes won the gold medal in mixed doubles and it has us gushing over it! In Washington, Sebi Korda wins and makes this the first time a father-son duo has won the same tournament! We briefly touch on Andrey Rublev's transphobic and hypocritical remarks, but we'll go more in depth once we have more of his response to the backlash. Denis Shapovalov was also in hot water in hot Washington and got defaulted. And much, much more! New to tennis or trying to get a friend into the sport? *DISCLAIMER: Apologies in advance for the audio quality from Lucy's mic* For Day 6 at Wimbledon, we are joined by Anastasia Folorunso from the Ground Pass Podcast, as Eugene is OOO for this weekend. We discuss the success of Frenchmen Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard making it to the fourth round for the first time. As well as Ben Shelton, who won another explosive five-setter against Denis Shapovalov. We also shoutout to the doubles matches and British junior Hephzibah Oluwadare who won her opening match today. Listen out for interview snippets from Shelton, Mpetshi Perricard and Fils.
Day 5 was a washout, for the most part, in terms of play on the outside courts but there were some top performances on No 1 and Centre Court where Jasmine Paolini and Coco Gauff picked up wins as well as Madison Keys (on Court 17). Frances Tiafoe versus Carlos Alcaraz lived up to the billing on Centre as the pair provided another five-set thriller. And Gael Monfils came up short against Grigor Dimitrov but was happy with his run at SW19 where he likes “the vibes”. Listen out for interview snippets from Paolini, Keys, Monfils and Tiafoe. Looking ahead to Day 6, Ben Shelton resumes against Denis Shapovalov and Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard play their third-round matches.
We're joined by Anastasia Folorunso from the GroundPass pod to talk all things French Open 2024 in a jam-packed show. Lucy was actually in Paris and managed to get a ticket to watch our Italian-Ghanaian sister Jasmine Paolini take on world No 1 Iga Swiatek in the final – Paolini is now the world No 7 after her dream fortnight in Paris which also included a trip to the women's doubles final with Sara Errani. Coco Gauff picked up her first Grand Slam doubles title with first-time partner Katerina Siniakova. The new world No 2 also went deep in singles where she fell to eventual champion Swiatek in the semis. Naomi Osaka gave us the match of the tournament, and Swiatek the hardest of times, in the second round. We shout out Gloriana Nahum making history for Benin, American Tyra Caterina Grant and 15-year-old Moise Kouame who all impressed in juniors! On the men's side, Felix Auger-Aliassime made it to the second week, things got heated between Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov and we urge France to allow young talents Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to cook! Keep commenting, liking, sharing and subscribing – we appreciate you all!
A rain-soaked and miserable day session turned into an electric and thrilling night session at Roland Garros, meaning that Catherine, David and Matt were buzzing when recording the pod in the media centre at 1am. There's chat about Holger Rune surviving a fifth set tiebreak against Flavio Cobolli, aggro involving Denis Shapovalov and Frances Tiafoe, a Djokovician performance from Novak Djokovic, shock defeats for Danielle Collins and Jelena Ostapenko, a press conference no show from Elena Rybakina, a stirring comeback from Bianca Andreescu, and the tournament's decision to ban alcohol from the stands. Today I chat with former pro and entrepreneur Peter Clarke.Peter was a fiery Irish promising tennis who quickly reached an ATP ranking of 229. Retiring quite young today, he got into coaching and soon after set up multiple successful businesses. He talks about growing up in Australia, his tennis days, some good anecdotes and his most recent project is called Coach Life, an online video platform. He chased down coaches worldwide for the past 12 months who worked with today's top players when they were juniors to learn their coaching methods in those early days. Currently, there are over 350 videos to learn from and I haven't watched them all but those I have, I found exceptional. On the platform are the junior coaches of Iga Swiatek, Nick Kyrgios, Tommy Paul, Taylor Fritz, Genie Bouchard, Coco Gauff, Sloane Stephens, Kei Nishikori, Pete Sampras, Francis Tiafoe, Pat Rafter, Denis Shapovalov and many more. Each month a new coach will be added to the platform. And it's not all on-court coaching, there is also fitness, nutrition, mental and more.Check it out here with a free 7-day trial.EnjoyFabioThis podcast is sponsored by ASICS.
