Steve Smith and Dave Anderson mark episode 300 of the GreatBase Tennis Podcast with a mix of shoutouts, reflection, and sharp commentary on the state of American college tennis. The episode opens with congratulations to Dave on his induction into the North Dakota Tennis Hall of Fame and a tribute to the late Dr. Jim Loehr, whose work on the mental side of tennis remains as relevant as ever. The centerpiece is a reading of a spoof Steve wrote years ago, a fairy tale reimagining of Patrick McEnroe's time juggling three major roles in American tennis simultaneously, landing with humor but carrying a serious message about focus and accountability. The episode closes with a frank conversation about the University of Arkansas dropping its tennis program, the broader crisis facing college tennis, and why more Americans need to be both playing and teaching the sport they love.
In this episode, Brian and Josh discuss the legacy of Dr. Jim Loehr. The episode is divided into four sections: 1) Dr. Loehr as a pioneer and “the first one out there” in the field of sport/performance psychology within tennis, 2) the legacy and importance of the 16‑Second Cure, 3) his shift in focusing on winning to helping athletes build character, and 4) personal reflections and final thoughts. To learn more about Josh and Brian's backgrounds and sport psychology businesses, go to TiebreakerPsych.com and PerformanceXtra.com. Send us Fan MailIn this episode of "Leadership Moments," hosts Stacy Caster and Tracy Ann Palmer delve into the misunderstood concept of peak performance in leadership. The episode begins by challenging the common misconception that peak performance equals relentless work hours and burnout. Instead, they redefine it as achieving exceptional results within your competence while ensuring sustainability through effective energy management. Drawing upon research from Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, they emphasize the importance of balancing vision, systems, and people.Through data-driven insights, Caster and Palmer highlight the pivotal role of leaders in team and organizational success, noting that a leader's energy state directly impacts their team's engagement and performance. They introduce the four pillars of peak performance—sleep, movement, nutrition, and mental well-being—underscoring each pillar's contribution to maintaining high performance. The episode warns about the dangers of neglecting these non-negotiables, pointing out the significant business costs associated with leader burnout and depleted performance. Strategies to integrate these pillars are dissected to help listeners transform their leadership approach effectively.Key Takeaways:Redefined Peak Performance: True peak performance emphasizes sustained energy levels, not exhaustion, allowing leaders to consistently perform at their best.Four Pillars of Leadership Health: Sleep, movement, nutrition, and mental well-being form the foundation of peak performance.Energy Management Over Time Management: Managing your energy is crucial for maintaining high cognitive and emotional function.Impact of Leadership Development: Effective leadership development substantially enhances organizational performance and addresses critical issues like burnout.Creating a Culture of Balance: Leaders who model a balanced lifestyle encourage similar behavior among their teams, promoting organizational well-being.Notable Quotes:"Peak performance is not about time management, it's about energy management.""Leaders who normalize healthy sleep create that culture across the whole organization.""A sleep-deprived leader is literally making high-stakes calls with a brain that's not fully online.""It's not progress that matters so much as the capacity.""Peak performance is not a destination you arrive at. In this deeply personal and insightful episode, performance psychologist Jim Loehr shares the story behind his life's work—tracing his journey from traditional clinical psychology into the pioneering field of human performance. What began as a simple question from a legendary coach—how to help athletes perform better under pressure—evolved into a decades-long exploration of the connection between mind, body, energy, and purpose.Drawing from his experiences working with world-class athletes, including some of the greatest names in tennis, Jim introduces the concept of the Ideal Performance State (IPS)—a unique mind-body balance where individuals perform at their best. He explains how true performance is not just about mental toughness, but about multidimensional health: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The conversation expands beyond sport into life itself, exploring powerful ideas such as energy management as the foundation of performance, the critical role of recovery, and the importance of aligning daily actions with a deeper purpose. Jim also dives into the influence of the “inner voice,” the stories we tell ourselves, and how those stories shape our energy, decisions, and ultimately our outcomes. This episode is both a masterclass in performance psychology and a philosophical reflection on how to live with intention, integrity, and sustained excellence. Whether you're an athlete, leader, or simply someone striving to perform better in your own life, this conversation offers practical frameworks and profound insights you can apply immediately.
Dr Jim Loehr wrote a book that changed my mindset on performance. That book was 'The Power of Full Engagement'. Jim's philosophy is that managing energy, not time, is the key to enduring high performance as well as to health, happiness, and life balance. The Power of Full Engagement is a highly practical, scientifically based approach to managing your energy more skillfully, both on and off the job, by laying out the key training principles and providing a powerful, step-by-step program that will help you level up your energy and, thus, your performance. In recent months, I've been queried several times on the relationship between energy, health and wellness on ideas, creativity, leadership and performance, and this episode is the best reference I can give for that question. Steve Smith and Dave Anderson revisit foundational habits that shape long-term success in tennis and life. Drawing from Stephen Covey's principles and decades of coaching experience, they explore proactivity, prioritization, win-win thinking, and the importance of beginning with the end in mind. Episode 288 connects these ideas directly to player development, character, and building resilient competitors. They also dive into awareness on the court, managing mistakes, body language, breathing, rituals, and the mental toughness concepts popularized by Jim Loehr. Along the way, they share stories from Brookhaven, Ave Maria, and the broader tennis community, emphasizing that growth comes from fundamentals, reflection, and daily habits that build confident, self-reliant players.
Mental toughness isn't something you're born with, it's a capacity you build. Rich Horwath sits down with Dr. Jim Loehr, widely regarded as the father of mental toughness, to explore what it truly takes to perform at your best under pressure. Drawing from decades of work with elite athletes, executives, military leaders, and physicians, Jim reframes performance as an energy challenge not a time problem. The conversation moves beyond mindset into the science of energy management, resilience, and recovery. Jim explains why tolerating failure is essential to growth, how pressure becomes a gift when properly trained for, and why purpose is the ultimate anchor in high-stakes environments. From Novak Djokovic to Special Forces teams, the principles remain the same. The discussion culminates in Jim's evolution from performance psychology to character. Enduring success, he argues, is rooted in moral and ethical character, integrity, compassion, and kindness, and the disciplined investment of energy into what matters most.

Summary In this episode, Andy talks with Dr. Joe Sutherland, co-author of the new book Analytics the Right Way: A Business Leader's Guide to Putting Data to Productive Use. Joe is a leader in AI policy and practice, serving as the founding director of the Emory Center for AI Learning and lead principal investigator for the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium. Andy and Joe explore what it really takes to make better decisions in a world drowning in data and exploding with AI hype. They discuss the myths of data collection, how randomized controlled trials and causal inference impact decision quality, and Joe's “two magic questions” that help project managers stay focused on outcomes. They also dive into recent AI breakthroughs like DeepSeek, and why executives may be paralyzed when it comes to implementing AI strategy. If you're looking for insights on how to use data and AI more effectively to support leadership and project decision-making, this episode is for you! Sound Bites “What are we trying to achieve? And how would we know if we achieved it?” “Sometimes we're measuring success by handing out coupons to people who already had the product in their cart.” “AI doesn't replace decision-making—it demands better decisions from us.” “Causality is important for really big decisions because you want to know with a level of certainty that if I make this choice, this outcome is going to happen.” “Too often, we make decisions based on bad causal inference and wonder why the outcomes don't match our expectations.” “The ladder of evidence helps you decide how much certainty you need before making a decision—and how much it'll cost to climb higher.” “The truth is, we're not ready for human-out-of-the-loop AI—we're barely asking the right questions yet.” “Leadership isn't about replacing people with AI. It's about using AI to make your people more productive and happier.” “We're starting to see some evidence that when you use large language models in education, test scores go up in excess of 60%.” “This may be the first time the kids feel more behind than the parents when it comes to a new technology.” Chapters 00:00 Introduction 02:00 Start of Interview 02:09 What Are Some Myths About Data? 03:49 What Is the Potential Outcomes Framework? 08:50 What Are Counterfactuals? 13:00 How Do You Personally Evaluate Causality? 18:22 What Are the Two Magic Questions for Projects? 20:45 What's Getting Traction From the Book? 24:26 What Can We Learn From DeepSeek's Disruption? 27:30 Human In or Out of the AI Loop? 30:41 How Joe Uses AI Personally and Professionally 33:33 What Is the Future of Agentic AI? 35:37 Will AI Replace Jobs? 37:18 How Can Parents Prepare Kids for the AI Future? 41:19 End of Interview 41:46 Andy Comments After the Interview 45:07 Outtakes Learn More You can learn more about Joe and his book at AnalyticsTRW.com. Humanity has a dangerous flaw. Despite the amazing progress we've made eradicating diseases, extending life, creating safe and often fulfilling workplaces, and developing a wide variety of magical machines, humans still fight wars, hate irrationally, and create groups of others who are intentionally marginalized. Our big brains have helped us create incredible tools and marvelous works of art. Still, they have a seemingly ingrained tendency toward violence and the marginalization of outside groups. As humans continue to create more devastating weaponry, performance psychologist Jim Loehr believes empathy and compassion are what can save us from us. In this interview, Dr. Loehr discusses “our species' penchant for aggression and violence.” To overcome our natural biological scarcity mindset, Dr. Loehr goes on to talk about a 20-week program he has developed for parents, teachers, and coaches that aims to create shared learning environments where people can strengthen their compassion and empathy muscles, practice acts of collaboration, and train themselves to manage their emotions to avoid aggressive overreactions.Dr. Jim Loehr is a world-renowned performance psychologist, whose ground-breaking, science-based energy management training system has achieved global recognition. From his more than 30 years of experience and applied research, Dr. Loehr believes the single most important factor in successful achievement, personal fulfillment, and life satisfaction is the strength of one's character. He strongly contends that character strength can be built in the same way that muscle strength is built through energy investment, and has brought this topic to life in his book, Leading with Character: 10 Minutes a Day to a Brilliant Legacy. His latest book is Sapiens Reinvented.
This podcast is devoted to, (1) raising awareness of how much of our success in life can be traced to countless gifts that reside outside our ordinary awareness, (2) illuminating the remarkable science-based benefits of immersing oneself in the emotion of gratefulness, and (3) describing a select number of highly practical, research-supported methods for expanding one's capacity for gratitude.
This podcast explores various mind control techniques that can significantly influence beliefs, thought patterns, and values—methods often categorized as forms of indoctrination. Through thoughtful exploration, we aim to: 1) uncover how these strategies can be harnessed for self-directed transformation (self-indoctrination), and 2) empower listeners with the tools and knowledge to recognize and resist unwanted indoctrination.

He told them he could guarantee that they could earn a college scholarship. All they had to do? "Take 100 shots per day. Here's the catch. You can never miss a day. No excuses." What are your 100 shots a day? Goal Setting – Most people don't set goals because the act alone is both a major and personal step in the direction of commitment, and it invites hope, fear, and the possibility of regret. Focus on what you can control – John Wooden was 5'10. Below average for a basketball player.
