On today's Round 4 Wimbledon catch-up, Joel and Chris recap all the shocks and surprises from the start of the second week at SW19.Stefanos Tsitsipas is upset by Christopher Eubanks, Kvitova wins just 3 games against Ons Jabeur and Elina Svitolina defies the seedings (and makes the most of her wildcard) to reach the Quarters. They touch upon some of the scheduling issues around late finishes on Centre Court. Chris gives his first hand perspective after two days on Centre Court and how matches not being completed impact the most committed tennis fans, camping in the queue. They also provide a Collect-a-set update and it's no surprise Kim is out in front with 3 points already secured.__________________
Nick and Myles talk you through all the action from day 8 at Wimbledon where Christopher Eubanks shocked Stefanos Tsitsipas, coming from 2 sets to 1 down to book his place in the quarter-final where he will meet Daniil Medvedev. Elsewhere, Novak Djokovic fought his way past Hubert Kurkacz in four sets while on the women's side Madison Keys saw off Mirra Andreeva after a come-from-behind win. The American was a set and a break down, before winning in three sets. Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur had more comfortable wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Petra Kvitova respectively. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune both enjoyed four sets wins over Matteo Berrettini and Grigor Dmitrov. #atp #wta #wimbledon2023 #tennis This podcast is available on... In this week's special preview podcast, Erik Gudris and Richard Pagliaro join Chris Oddo to look ahead to the Wimbledon fortnight. Here are the topics we canvas: Can we really read anything into the grass court warm up results as indicators before Wimbledon? Maybe it's recency bias but I have my eyes on Keys / Kasatkina. I'd say yes. Huge experience for Alcaraz/ Swiatek/ I think you can pick out positives, and maybe not sweat the negatives. The draw's out, did it change anything about the way you view this Wimbledon playing out? To me it worked in Swiatek's favor a bit because the bottom half is stacked. Is Djokovic the best men's grass-court player in history if he wins this title? Federer 192-29 on grass with 19 titles. Djokovic 109-18 with eight titles. DJOKOVIC 3-1 VS FEDERER AT GRASS AND 3-0 VS FEDERER IN WIMBLEDON FINALS Has Swiatek played herself into favorite status with her performance at Bad Homburg? How is this year's draw different, with Russian and Belarusian players in the mix again? How will Wimbledon's decision to allow them to play impact the fortnight? What is your most outrageous pick for a run to the semis or beyond? How much has Alcaraz improved on grass – and as a player in general – since last Wimbledon? Won his final 10 sets at Queens. Using the slice. Returning aggression. Is Medvedev a tad overlooked as a grass-court talent? 35-19 with a title on grass. 8-4 at Wimbledon, missed last year but made second week for the first time in 2021 (Hurkacz) Can we expect anything from Berrettini or Kyrgios? What do we make of Venus Williams and what does it mean for Wimbledon to have her in the draw? What do we think of Wozniacki's comeback? 30 titles No.1 for 71 weeks Slam champion going to be 33. physicality???!!! Your favorite first-rounder, men's and women's? You're favorite potential round of 16 matchup and why? (just one) Jabeur v Kvitova or Muchova v Sabalenka You're winners and why? (men's and women's) Does Gauff have a better shot at Swiatek on grass than any other surface? Has lost all 14 sets against her… (AND ONLY ONCE WON MORE THAN FOUR GAMES IN A SET V IGA) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Gavin MacMillan, Aryna Sabalenka's biomechanics trainer, makes a return to the podcast to assess the games of the Wimbledon women's favourites, including Swiatek, Rybakina and Sabalenka.00:00: Iga Swiatek's grass court flaws and Elena Rybakina's title defence.05:17: Karolina Muchova's chances after the French Open.06:52: Gavin's confidence in Aryna Sabalenka.09:57: Dark horse in Petra Kvitova.12:08: The rest of the field including Jabeur, Krejcikova and Garcia.15:55: Analysing Coco Gauff's game.23:11: A look back at different generations and ways to play the game.29:16: Gavin's pick for the tournament.
In this episode of Tennis and Bagels, Andre and Vansh look at the performances of Carlos Alcaraz and Petra Kvitova in particular, as they shape up their games to the Grass Court Slam. Kvitova, a former World No.2 and two-time Wimbledon champion, showed once again signs of why she's had the career she's had so far, but since winning at SW19 in 2014 she has not done so well in London. Could this be the year?Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz has finally completed the surface set, winning his first grass court title at Queen's - and what a fantastic week that was for the World No.1. While Alcaraz does not have the experience on grass to be considered a heavy favourite for Wimbledon, he has simply amazed us with his ability to learn and make adjustments so quickly. What can't Alcaraz do??In other news, the always mercurial Jelena Ostapenko managed to once again get her hands on a trophy by playing her best tennis - an Avatar state where she becomes virtually unbeatable, but her dips in match can be too costly. And Alexander Bublik put his mind into it and showed why he's one of the most talented players on tour - he seems to only lack the motivation to break into the Elite of the game. Though a Halle title might not be the best stepping stone for Wimbledon unless you're named Roger Federer...Talk to us on social media :)Follow Tennis and Bagels: Twitter @TennisAndBAGELSAndre Rolemberg @RolembergAndreVansh Vermani @vanshv2kOwen Lewis @tennisnationCheck out Popcorn Tennis!Twitter: @Popcorn_Tennis1Website: popcorntennis.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/tennis-and-bagels.
Petra Kvitova and Daniil Medvedev reign supreme in Miami — our Round Table experts discuss all the big news from the Magic City as the tours shift gears into the clay swing, Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal to miss Monte Carlo with injury but will they be fit for Roland Garros? Plus what we all should know about Dominic Thiem but no one's bothered to ask yet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Our Miami champs – Kvitova and Medvedev – underscore how tough it is to win the Sunshine Double. Petra Kvitova completes one of her most unexpected tournament runs by winning her 30th WTA title and ninth at the 1000 level. On the men's side, Daniil Medvedev caps an astonishing run of tournaments with title #4, and Alcaraz and Sinner's electrifying semifinal gets widespread attention. We've also got Eubanks, Gauff/Pegula, a decision from Wimbledon, and Pouille's openness about mental health. 01:35 So much rain, so much discourse 05:25 Petra wins title #30! 16:15 Barbie K says WTA Big 3 is fake news! 18:55 Yes, Sinner vs. Alcaraz is becoming a really good rivalry 27:35 Medvedev turns his whole trajectory around these past few months: 4 titles in 5 tries 30:50 Chris Eubanks makes his career-best run and enters the top 100 34:45 Between Gauff, Pegula, and Townsend (and more!), American women's doubles is lit 38:20 Wimbledon will allow Russian & Belarusian players who sign neutrality declarations 42:20 When is Rafa returning? 44:20 Lucas Pouille opens up about depression, substance use, and learning humility
The guys talk about the rest of the Miami open: Kvitova beating Rybakina, Medvedev taking down Sinner, Alcaraz looking solid. On the women's side, Rybakina, Swiatek and Sabalenka have started to pull themselves above the rest of the WTA and continue to dominate the tour. Medvedev has only lost 1 match in the last 6 weeks. Wow. What will all of this mean as we head into the clay court swing with Djokovic back, Nadal back, Alcaraz in form, Medvedev playing great ball. This will be the most exciting clay court swing we have had in quite some time. Buckle up.
The last few days in Miami did not go as expected, with both Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina unable to complete the Sunshine Double. Instead, Petra Kvitova rolled back the years and Daniil Medvedev showed why he's a specialist in hard courts. David, Catherine and Matt are together to discuss an uplifting week from Kvitova, whether fatigue played a role in Rybakina's final performance, the latest epic instalment of the Sinner vs Alcaraz rivalry, why the match up against Medvedev is such a bad one for Sinner, and the physical prowess of Medvedev to do so much winning over the last two months. There's also our reaction to Wimbledon's decision to lift the ban on Russian and Belarusian players. In "Serving Aces," Episode 5, Alexandra Stevenson and guest host Hugues Laverdiere discuss a myriad of topics including the start of Major League Baseball and the three rules changes, ATP and WTA Tour players in the Miami Open, all things basketball in the Men's NCAA Final Four, and the Women's NCAA Championship. They throw in the entertaining Pickleball Slam, with Grand Slam tennis champions John McEnroe, Michael Chang, Andre Agassi, and Andy Roddick going at it - in the new paddle competition - singles and doubles - playing for a million dollars. Alexandra and Hughes, who goes by the nickname, Ougi, give their opinion on ATP players Medvedev and Sinner - and the WTA players, Rybakina and Kvitova in the finals of the Miami Open. Ougi and Alexandra discuss the different ways of being a champion - not always having to win a championship. They note that in the men's Final Four, Florida Atlantic walks away as champions. As to the women's NCAA basketball players, Alexandra notes that some of them could be recruited by the WWE, as indicated by their rough and tough play on court, hands and elbows flying, bodies busting up plays. 8-time Grand Slam champion, the legendary Andre Agassi - who played in the Pickleball Slam at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida - gives Alexandra's chosen quote of the episode..."Pickleball is where tennis players go to die, so I'm officially dying."http://@alexandrastevenson

In the latest episode of Tennis Weekly, Joel and Chris catch up on all the Round 3 action from the US Open and look ahead to the second week of the final slam of the year. They cover THE tennis headline story of the year: Serena Williams playing what looks like will be her final match and question if it really is the last time we see her on a tennis court? They reflect back on the mixed fortunes of the Brits, with a routine win for Cam Norrie but heartbreak for Jack Draper and tough losses for Murray and Evans. Our Collect-a-set picks Caroline Garcia and Carlos Alcaraz continue to impress and Medvedev sets up a mouth watering 4th Round clash with Nick Kyrgios. Joel and Chris also discuss the last 16 encounters they are most looking forward to and make predictions as to who could make a deep run into the second week at Flushing Meadows.______________DOWNLOADTENNIS.COMTo stay up to date on all tennis around the world including ATP, WTA and Challenger tours, download TNNS Live Scores.Download on Apple PodcastsDownload on Google PlayFollow TNNS Live Scores on TwitterAnd check out the TNNS Lives Scores website at www.downloadtennis.com______________SOCIAL MEDIAShare your fan thoughts on the week with the #TennisWeekly on social media.Twitter: @tennisweeklypodInstagram: @tennisweeklypodWebsite: tennisweekly.co.ukWritten, presented and produced by Joel Girling and Kim MackenzieCrowdfunded by our listeners.Recorded on 4th September 2022. Muguruza lost, again. She now has 10 losses on the season, and only 7 wins. Is she finished? Who is more finished, her or Kvitova? Where they do they rank amongst their colleagues Vika, Kerber, in terms of finishedness? Is that even a word? Now it is. What do you make of Kudermetova's win over Sabalenka? BHM stays winning!!! So does Alexandrova, I can't believe she's not playing Wimbledon. McNally has more wins on grass this season than any other player, 7. Can she keep going? I think yes. I recap today's matches and preview tomorrow's slate, as well as look at the draw and how things stand going into.
No words to be said for what Ajla Tomljanovic and Sori Cirstea did today. Martina Trevisan and Angie Kerber keep winning. One really straightforwardly and one in dramatic fashion. Petra Kvitova lost today, and Kaja Muchova beat Sakkari. Onto tomorrow, for the remainder of round 2 matches. Best thing I saw today: Karolina Muchova Worst thing I saw today: Ajla Tomljanovic & Sori Cirstea Most interesting I saw today: Saville 6-4 6-2 against Kvitova
Take a bow, Queen Dayana. Unbelievable performance by Yastremska that took a lot of guts and guile. I recap the two tournaments in Monterrey and Lyon thus far, and preview the upcoming matches for Wednesday. I also discuss the FUTURE of the WTA tour, whilst also addressing some concerns in some of the young, promising players (Potapova, Kostyuk, Frech) and also some of the veteran players who seem to be on their way out (Kvitova, Halep, Vika)
Wow wow wow. Carlitos in Rio. Djokovic, Rublev and Jiri Vesely in Dubai, Medvedev, Zverev, and Nadal in Acapulco. Ostapenko in Dubai, Swiatek in Doha, and Sabalenka, Kvitova, Badosa, Sakkari, Halep, Yastremska, Kasatkina, Tomljanovic. FAA, Tsitsipas. A lotof players feature in our 2.5 week long recap, and I try my best to cover everything! Welcome back!!!
Losing a deciding set is no fun. Especially if it's after you won the first, and especially losing it in a tiebreak. Mixed results from our bets, although the WTA St. Petersburg tournament seems to be delightful thus far. Kudermetova, Giorgi, Teichmann, Cornet, all with first round exits. That's how good the draw is. Kvitova loses tomorrow? Can Xinyu Wang get it going? Shapovalov plays who?
Andy Murray produces a five-set win for the ages against Nikoloz Basilashvili to reach the second round, Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova suffer upset losses, we preview Day 3 including Ash Barty v Lucia Bronzetti and Rafael Nadal v Yannick Hanfmann, and why the fans keep coming back to Melbourne Park.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In 2011, a young Czech dared to follow in the footsteps of her tennis hero, stepping out as a Wimbledon finalist just five years after discovering she was quite good at tennis. Opting to do all the talking with her racquet, Wimbledon was where it all started for a relatively unknown, Petra Kvitová, but there was much more to come... Ten years on and Kvitova is beloved by tennis, not simply for her dominant displays on court, but the way she has overcome all the odds off it, too. A horrendous incident that almost robbed Petra of her life, and very nearly ended her career, tested her metal in a way that Grand Slam finals never could. In this episode, we retrace Kvitová's steps, from a small-town girl practising with her father in school sports halls, to stunning the world by winning two Wimbledon titles in the most extraordinary fashion. We also dig a little deeper, and get to know the woman who has emerged from a ten-year journey that has been anything but smooth. Join us for a story of raw power, remarkable resilience and dogged determination; a story of triumph against all odds. With special thanks to Petra Kvitová, Jiří Vaněk, Katie Spellman, Courtney Nguyen, Barbora Strycova, Martina Navratilova, Australian Open
