Wimbledon's serving more than just tennis. Celebs donned their Wimbledon whites while several top-seeded players bid us a “pip-pip cheerio” in early exits. Catherine, David and Matt were live as blockbuster semi-final line-ups were set up in both draws. In Part 1 we review the defeats by Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner of Flavio Cobolli and Ben Shelton respectively. We discuss how much better Cobolli performed than we expected, how Djokovic is looking at this stage of the tournament, and whether his late stage fall is anything to be concerned about. Jannik Sinner's elbow seems to be holding up reasonably well; we talk over Shelton's approach to the match and whether there's anything he could have done differently to trouble the world no. 1. Then it's time for the Sinner vs Djokovic hype to begin. Will it be a repeat of Paris a few weeks ago? Or can Djokovic get him this time?In Part 2 (31m09s) we discuss the victories of Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic over Liudmila Samsonova and Mirra Andreeva. Why did Andreeva not quite play her best tennis? How much is grass suiting Bencic's game? And will the quick turnaround ahead of tomorrow's semi-finals have any effect on Swiatek? In Part 3 (54m51s) we preview the two women's semifinals happening tomorrow and there's a round of punchy percentage predictions in which Matt and David briefly reverse roles. Tonight, we're getting to know Brandon NakashimaMeet Brandon Nakashima: The Rising Star of American TennisIf you follow tennis or have ever watched the U.S. Open or Wimbledon, you've probably heard about names like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Coco Gauff. But there's another name you should know—Brandon Nakashima, one of the top young American men's tennis players on the ATP Tour.Brandon might not be a household name just yet, but he's been working his way up through the rankings with quiet confidence, strong discipline, and a game built on consistency and control. He's not flashy like some players, but that's part of what makes him so good—he lets his tennis speak for itself.Early Life and BackgroundBrandon Nakashima was born on August 3, 2001, in San Diego, California. He started playing tennis at the age of 3 with his grandfather and quickly fell in love with the sport. By the time he was in his early teens, Brandon was one of the top junior players in the country. He's of Japanese and Vietnamese heritage, and family is a big part of his life. His calm personality on court is often linked to the way he was raised—focused, respectful, and humble.Instead of turning professional right away, Brandon made a smart move: he played college tennis. In 2019, he spent one season at the University of Virginia, one of the best college tennis programs in the country. Even though he was only 17, he dominated in college matches. After just one season, he decided he was ready to go pro.Turning Pro and Climbing the RankingsBrandon turned professional in 2019 and didn't waste any time making an impact. In his first full year on tour, he reached an ATP final and started playing in Grand Slam tournaments. By 2022, he was ranked inside the Top 50 in the world, which is a big deal for a player in his early 20s.That same year, he made it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open, one of tennis's biggest events. He also won the Next Gen ATP Finals, a tournament that features the best players under 21. Previous winners include top stars like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, so winning that event showed just how high Brandon's ceiling could be.Playing StyleBrandon isn't the loudest or most emotional player on court, but he's one of the most focused. He's known for his steady baseline play, meaning he does really well in long rallies from the back of the court. He hits the ball cleanly, especially with his two-handed backhand, which is one of his best weapons. He doesn't rely on power alone. Instead, Brandon uses smart tactics, great footwork, and a calm mindset to outplay his opponents. His game is built for hard courts, but he's also improving on grass and clay—two very different and challenging surfaces.Recent Results and What's NextIn 2025, Brandon reached the third round of Wimbledon, defeating China's Yunchaokete Bu and fellow American Reilly Opelka before falling to Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. These wins reminded fans that he's still a strong competitor with the potential to go even further. Now ranked in the Top 80 (as of July 2025), Brandon is focusing on the North American hard-court season, including big tournaments like the Citi Open, Cincinnati Masters, and the U.S. Open. Why He MattersAmerican men's tennis has been looking for its next big star since the days of legends like Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. While players like Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton are getting a lot of attention, Brandon Nakashima is part of that same group. He might be quieter and more low-key than some of his peers, but he's just as talented and just as hungry to succeed. If you're a fan of sports where hard work and mental strength matter just as much as physical ability, Brandon is a great player to follow. He represents a new generation of tennis players who combine skill with sportsmanship—and he's just getting started.
Tennis.com and VSIN Gambling Writer Zachary Cohen joins the show for a Wimbledon update, where the seeds continue to fall. Cohen analyzes how Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton have been able to have success, and he looks at the form of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as they advance in the draw. The writer also weighs in on Joao Fonseca's third round loss, and comments made by Stefanos Tsitsipas' new coach Goran Ivanisevic. Cohen goes in depth on the women's results at Wimbledon as well, reacting to the upset losses suffered by Madison Keys and Naomi Osaka. He also discusses why Iga Swiatek has found her footing on grass, Aryna Sabalenka's chances, and whether past champions Elena Rybakina and Barbora Krejcikova can re-capture some magic at The All England Club. Hosted by Mitch Michals.
Brett Connors returns to the podcast to dive into all the drama at Wimbledon, where the chase for the titles is on at The All England Club. Connors recaps the unfortunate events that led to Grigor Dimitrov retiring and Jannik Sinner advancing to the quarterfinals, and explains what to expect from the Italian as he prepares to battle rising American star Ben Shelton at less than full health. The host of "Advantage Connors" also examines Novak Djokovic's chances for a 25th major, Carlos Alcaraz's supremacy on the grass, and whether Taylor Fritz is a legit contender to go all the way in London. Connors also discusses how Aryna Sabalenka was able to fend off Laura Siegemund and reach the semifinals, and explains why it finally be the Belarussian's time at Wimbledon. The podcast host and tennis producer dives into Iga Swiatek's newfound game on the grass, Mirra Andreeva's ability to bounce back after Roland Garros, and American Amanda Anisimova's fortitude as she reaches the final four. Hosted by Mitch Michals.
Day 10 at Wimbledon 2025 delivered thrilling quarterfinal action across the men's and women's singles draws. In the men's quarterfinals, Novak Djokovic overcame a brief scare after slipping on match point to defeat Flavio Cobolli in four sets, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4, earning his 14th Wimbledon semifinal appearance. Jannik Sinner, in commanding form despite earlier elbow issues, dispatched Ben Shelton 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 to set up a blockbuster semifinal against Djokovic. There was also a surprise retirement announce from another Italian - Fabio Fognini - on site after his whirlwind performance earlier in the tournament against Carlos Alcaraz. On the women's side, Iga Swiatek reached her first Wimbledon semifinal with a solid win over Liudmila Samsonova, 6-2, 7-5. Joining her is Belinda Bencic, who edged out rising star Mirra Andreeva in two tight tiebreaks, 7-6, 7-6, continuing her impressive return to form as a new mother - but should this really be the narrative? Joel and Kim also preview and make some prediction for the women's semi finals with Swiatek facing Bencic and Sabalenka taking on Anisimova on Centre Court.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection and Pure Drive (2025) is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Ben Shelton fell to world No 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets – 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4 – on a busy No 1 Court. The American 10th seed, who admitted he felt under pressure on serve throughout the contest, was up a mini-break in the first-set tiebreak before Sinner rattled off six points in a row to win it. In set two, Sinner, who was rocking a sleeve on his right arm, was in the zone. Serving at 4-5, Shelton got broken which handed the second set to the Italian. The third set was on serve until 4-5, with Shelton serving to stay in the match. Sinner turned up the heat on return and broke the American for the second and ultimately final time. In his post-match press conference, we asked Shelton to reflect on reaching the *quarter-finals or better at all four of the Grand Slams at the age of 22 (Shelton corrected us as he is yet to reach the last eight in Paris). We did have something to celebrate after defending women's doubles champions Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova booked their spot in the semi-finals after a 7-6, 6-3 win over 10th seeds Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani Rate, review and share on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Audioboom. The Tennis Tragic #064 / Goran's Knee / Must we suffer for our art? Have we been coddled, and can we triumph in spite of our soft hearts? The great ship Wimbledon finds itself mid-stream. Matt finds the random button, and we all discover August Holmgren as a result. Players get more serious about the Upset Game. Marin Cilic pauses and we flashback to the Match That Time Forgot. Arthur Rinderknech stops the darkness, while Laura Siegemund practices the dark arts. A fishing trip organized by Craig Boynton is described. Goran Ivanisevic dishes out some tough love (on one leg). Trinity Rodman gazes lovingly at Ben Shelton. Matte and David consider a lateral career move and re-imagine the Tennis Tragic as a Tennis Podcast Podcast.
Taylor Fritz was not on the schedule today so Catherine, David and Matt were live at the scheduled time of 9.30pm to bring you all the news from Day 6 at Wimbledon. In Part 1 we cover the women's results, starting with Iga Swiatek's statement win over Danielle Collins, her ebullient interviews, and what jt might all mean for this tournament. Combined with Clara Tauson's victory over Elena Rybakina, it was surely a good day for Swiatek. We also discuss Mirra Andreeva's comfortable victory over Hailey Baptiste, and the sad scenes of Barbora Krejcikova being physically compromised in the latter stages of her defeat to Emma Navarro. In Part 2 (40m19s) we discuss Novak Djokovic beating fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic and whether Alex de Minaur has any chance against him this year. Jannik Sinner has been imperious to the point of it being statistically significant and he saw off Pedro Martinez with no trouble at all. We also cover victories for Lorenzo Sonego, Ben Shelton, Flavio Cobolli and also for Grigor Dimitrov, who finally seems to be stringing some matches together without injury. In part 3 (62m25s) we look ahead to tomorrow's order of play. Can Sonay Kartal and Cameron Norrie continue the British run by beating Anastasia Pavyluchenkova and Nicolas Jarry? Will Carlos Alcaraz be focused on the job in hand? And can Taylor Fritz win in less than five sets? Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! A blockbuster Friday for British tennis came to a close with Emma Raducanu producing one of her best performances since her US Open title run in 2021, pushing Aryna Sabalenka all the way in two tight sets under the Centre Court lights. Join Kim and Chris as they break down Raducanu's display, what it means now that she'll drop to British No. 3, and whether the match was a good advert for women's night sessions (ahem, Amélie Mauresmo and Roland Garros). It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Brits either, as Cam Norrie and Sonay Kartal continued their strong form to book spots in the fourth round. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz survived a stern test from the powerful Jan-Lennard Struff to avoid another five-set battle, while Taylor Fritz added another four-set win to his tally — and this time was able to actually wrap things up in broad daylight.Ben Shelton needed just over a minute to complete perhaps the quickest overnight return at Wimbledon, sealing victory against Rinky Hijikata in just over 60 seconds. There was disappointment for big names too, with Australian Open champion Madison Keys falling meekly with illness a factor and Naomi Osaka suffering an agonising defeat, missing a golden chance for a deep Slam run. History was made, though, as lucky loser Solana Sierra became the first female lucky loser ever to reach Wimbledon's fourth round.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Friend of the pod Tumaini Carayol joins in Lucy's absence to go through the day's action. Hailey Baptiste versus Mirra Andreeva did not feel like a 6-1, 6-3 match. The American, playing on No 1 Court for the first time in her career, made a nervy start but tightened things up in the second set. Baptiste though can be proud of her third-round run at Wimbledon on debut. The 23-year-old American is trending in the right direction in the rankings and has “a game made for the natural surfaces”, according to Tumaini. The Guardian man also shares his thoughts on Iga Swiatek-Danielle Collins, which was the match he was assigned to for the day, and also talks about the Aryna Sabalenka-Emma Raducanu third-round match that took place on Day 5. In the final match on No 1 Court, Ben Shelton looked good against lucky loser Marton Fucsovics. Shelton, making a habit of winning in straight sets at SW19 this year, won 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2. The match felt like it was on American's racket from ball one – even in the second-set tiebreak, a devilish slice backhand set the American on his way to stamping further authority on the match. The 10th seed will face Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round. It will be the third Grand Slam in a row the two have faced each other. Listen out for a post-match press snippet from Shelton. We also talk you through a funny/awkward exchange between the American and a US-based journalist. Catherine, David and Matt react to the events of Day 5 at Wimbledon, moments after Aryna Sabalenka wrapped up victory over Emma Raducanu. In Part 1 we discuss the final match of the day and the improvements shown by Raducanu despite her eventual loss to the world no 1. We also look at the defeat of Madison Keys by Laura Siegemund and ask if that's something we should have seen coming, analyse the losses for Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina, and discuss big wins for Sonay Kartal and Amanda Anisimova. In part 2 (49m48s) we look at all the men's results including Alcaraz's four set victory against Struff, Fritz's continued progress through the draw, and Rublev's improved form as he beat Adrian Mannarino. There was even more Matt-coded content as Jarry beat Fonseca and Ben Shelton added to history with a 70 second serve-dominated winning game on the resumption of his match. In part 3 (77m27s) we look look ahead to tomorrow's order of play. Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! Talk tennis with Friends on The Barge! Ben Shelton needed just 71 seconds to get the job done against Rinky Hijikata – 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. The American 10th seed served out the match to love, and with an ace on match point, to book his place in the third round. Lucy asked Shelton to talk about the technical changes he has made this season and how they have impacted his grass-court game. The 10th-seeded American's next opponent will be Marton Fucsovics after the Hungarian lucky loser won the one-set shootout against Gael Monfils final score was 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. This match was also carried over from Day 4 after being suspended for bad light. La Monf got broken at 2-2 and was unable to recover. In his post-match presser, Monfils spoke about what he thought went wrong in the decider. Naomi Osaka made a great start against Anastasia Pavlychenkova taking the first set but lost in three – 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The four-time Grand Slam champion trailed 0-3 in the second and third sets, before drawing level but serving at 4-5 in the decider, Pavlyuchenkova broke and took the match. Osaka was understandably low during press but did give a positive, upbeat answer in response to a question from a Japanese journalist. Madison Keys, the sixth seed, lost 6-3, 6-3 sets to Laura Siegemund which was in keeping with the top seeds falling in the first week at SW19 – Aryna Sabalenka is the only top-10 seed left in the top half of the women's draw. Was a puzzling defeat for the American who seemed to struggle with the German's variety. Listen out for post-match press snippets from Shelton, Monfils and Osaka. It was a later start for us today and the match we were most looking forward to did not disappoint. Wimbledon main-draw debutants Hailey Baptiste and Victoria Mboko faced off in the second round and it was the American that came out on top winning 7-6(6), 6-3. Mboko led in the first set and even built up a lead in the tiebreak, but Baptiste's fighting spirit and experience saw her through. Ben Shelton and Rinky Hijikata will finish their match on Day 5 after bad light halted their second-round encounter. Shelton was leading 6-2, 7-5, 5-4 and actually had three match points at 5-3 on Hijikata's serve but the Australian managed to hold. The American 10th seed will serve for the match on Day 5. Gael Monfils lost the first set against Marton Fucsovics but put things right in the second, winning it 6-1. La Monf won the third 6-4 and served for the match at 5-4 in the fourth before Fucsovics broke back – the Hungarian went on to take the set in the tiebreak. They will play out the deciding fifth on Day 5. Felix Auger-Aliassime fell to Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets – 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-3, 6-4. This match started on Day 3 but was suspended due to bad light. It was a tough loss for the Canadian who was looking forward to the prospect of facing defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the third round.
