The Asian swing is in full flight, and Tennis Weekly has all the latest headlines, results, and talking points from Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai. Carlos Alcaraz struck back with swift Laver Cup revenge over Taylor Fritz to capture his eighth title of the season in Tokyo, while Jannik Sinner bounced back in style to secure a second crown in Beijing. We also reflect on Gael Monfils' emotional announcement that he will retire at the end of 2026, celebrating the career of one of the sport's most electrifying entertainers. On the WTA side, the China Open is serving up shocks: Emma Navarro stunned world No. 1 Iga Świątek—dishing out a bagel along the way—while fellow Americans Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Amanda Anisimova also powered into the quarterfinals. Britain's Sonay Kartal has mounted a surprise run, but there was heartbreak for Emma Raducanu, who bowed out after another dramatic match filled with missed chances. Plus, Roger Federer has sparked debate with his comments on court speeds—are tournaments really slowing surfaces to favor Alcaraz and Sinner? "Today's guest has seen tennis history unfold from the best seat in the house — the umpire's chair. Born in Båstad, Sweden, Lars Graff started out as a ball boy, became a linesman at just 14, and rose to become one of the most respected chair umpires in the sport. Over a remarkable career spanning decades, he officiated more than 7,000 matches, including Grand Slam finals, Davis Cup battles, and Olympic showdowns. He holds the rare distinction of having chaired both the men's and women's Wimbledon finals — a true testament to his calm authority and deep knowledge of the game. But his journey didn't end when he stepped down from the chair. Lars transitioned into ATP leadership roles, ultimately becoming Vice President of Officiating, and today he continues to shape the sport as Co-Tournament Director of the China Open. From quiet rulings to high-stakes drama, from Båstad to Beijing — this is the voice behind some of tennis' most iconic moments. Please welcome Lars Graff." In a thrilling 2024 China Open final, Carlos Alcaraz edged past Jannik Sinner in a dramatic 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(3) victory to claim his fourth title of the year. The three-hour, 21-minute battle saw Alcaraz fight back from early deficits, including an impressive comeback in the final-set tie-break where he won seven straight points from 0/3 down. This win marked Alcaraz's third consecutive victory over Sinner this year, extending his lead in their head-to-head rivalry to 6-4. With this triumph, Alcaraz became the first player to win ATP 500 titles on all three surfaces—hard, clay, and grass—in the same season. We also highlight Coco Gauff's commanding performance at the China Open, where she secured her second title of the season by defeating Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3. At 20 years old, Gauff became the youngest China Open champion in 14 years and maintained her perfect record in hard-court finals, improving her overall finals record to 8-1. This victory bolsters her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals, solidifying her position as one of the top players on the tour.
