It's another Anime August episode with Patrick and Amanda! This time, we are discussing the anime Delicious in Dungeon (or as it is known in Japanese and on some corners of the internet Dungeon Meshi). This episode covers the first season of the anime series on Netflix (and in theory the corresponding manga - we didn't read it, sorry!), so be sure to watch the whole season to avoid spoilers. (Although Patrick definitely spoiled something he saw online that happens after the first season's story! He's really sorry he promises!) Amanda and Patrick talk about some of their favorite bits of the season of Delicious in Dungeon, including Senshi crotch shots, Marcille's semi-canon lesbianism, and the spectacular English dub. They also discuss autistic representation, perceived or otherwise, in Laios's character (which might be partially influenced by the performance from Damien Haas, his English language voice actor). The food is talked about, of course, but more importantly Amanda yells about how weird it is that people think it's so strange that Laios and party eat the monsters in the dungeon. Naturally, they also get very passionate about side characters like Kabru and Shuro. There is also a good deal of discussion around the influence that Dungeons & Dragons has on Delicious in Dungeon, including how the mangaka read Dungeons & Dragons player and dungeon master books for research. They also discuss the need (or lack thereof) of racism in the fantasy genre (spoiler: they come out hard against racism). And Amanda and Patrick only briefly get sidetracked into talking about Smosh like twice and whether or not Damien Haas's participation in Smosh videos means that we are getting season 2 anytime soon… So come and join us as we continue our annual dive into anime. [School of Everything Else 2025] This is a commissioned show for Chris Finik, The Jonin Monkey, Banzai Tree and Sixblazer. We recruited Willow as a guest, since they were immediately smitten with this 24-episode first season. We heartily recommend you cast aside your worries and just delve into this podcast episode, regardless of having seen the show or not. While you will find out things that are going to happen, we can't spoil the show for you, only make it richer with more texture to get your teeth into. The on-paper synopsis is a bunch of misfits searching an underground labyrinth for one of their number, lost to a dragon. The experience itself is a gourmet tour of eating the monsters that attack them. The longer term quest is a better balance of the delicate and deadly ecosystem that abounds in tabletop RPGs. So, grab your cooking knife and your shield reforged into a pot, light the magic circle and let's get to the nosh.

The final course is served in our Delicious in Dungeon x Toriko combo series. After leaving the Golden Country, Laios and his friends are attacked by a griffin. This perilous encounter gives us some insight into Senshi's past and motivations. The party is slowed down again when changeling mushrooms mix things up, forcing them to think quickly and adapt. As the party descends deeper, outside forces join the fray and the dungeon's ecology becomes ever-more unstable. (But don't worry, there's still time for a quick bite.) Back in Toriko, the titular Gourmet Hunter and Coco face-off against a deadly Devil Python. Both are forced to push themselves to the limit to overcome this sinister serpent and find the coveted Puffer Whale. However, as their flavorful adventure continues, an even stronger foe is skulking around in the depths. In what's already being hailed as our best episode yet (by us), we dive into another combo platter of Delicious in Dungeon and Toriko. First, Laios and his friends arrive at the dungeon's Sixth Level. After dealing with some uncanny shapeshifters, the party gains a new member in the form of the beastman ninja Izutsumi. A supernatural detour then brings the party to the legendary Golden Country, a paradise within the dungeon that remains frozen in time. There, a surprising revelation leads Laios to question his destiny. Back on the surface, Kabru discusses similarly existential matters with the Canaries, a group of elven dungeon specialists known for leaving destruction in their wake. Next, in Toriko, our heroes have to get past a troop of dangerous Troll Kongs to reach the extra-flavorful fruit they guard. Finally, Toriko and Komatsu team up with another member of the Four Heavenly Kings to find the rare Puffer Whale. Fated battles await in today's exciting installment of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake: Weebs & Wyrms! First, Dungeon Meshi reaches its halfway point as the party finally faces the infamous Red Dragon. The battle pushes Laios and his friends to their limits, and a grim discovery afterward proves hard to swallow. Marcille may have a solution in the form of ancient dark magic, but the dungeon (and its master) won't make things easy. In Record of Lodoss War, King Fahn and Emperor Beld finally face one another on the battlefield. However, their duel ends with both rulers dead after Karla the Grey Witch intervenes to sow chaos. Certain that Lodoss will never know peace with Karla controlling things, Parn and his party go to confront the witch directly. Our journey through realms inspired by tabletop RPGs continues with another Delicious in Dungeon and Record of Lodoss War combo episode. In the Mad Mage's Dungeon, Laios and his party must traverse the watery Fourth Level while learning a few (harsh) lessons from the dungeon's ecosystem. Then, a surprise encounter with an Undine leaves Marcille drained of her mana. With the help of an old teammate, the party will have to craft an energizing brew if they want their mage to continue. On the island of Lodoss, the arrival of King Kashue in Valis gives Parn the inspiration he needs to become a great knight. While the party gets to enjoy a few fleeting moments of peace, Karla the Grey Witch continues to scheme in the shadows. Emperor Beld begins his destructive advance into Valis, with King Fahn standing ready to face his old nemesis in battle.
