Extraction shooters are finally confronting their identity crisis. Is Marathon the answer, or just another branch of the same lineage?Phil, Sides, and Anjos break down a pivotal moment for shooters: Highguard's collapse, Marathon's high-stakes launch, and Overwatch's unexpected resurgence. The debate rage on: are we watching the evolution of battle royale into something more persistent, or just another iteration of Tarkov's legacy? We discuss:● Highguard's shutdown and the limits of modern marketing○ Hate-playing, sentiment collapse, and losing control of narrative post-launch● Marathon's design thesis○ Persistent battle royale vs traditional extraction shooter lineage○ Lower friction loops, faster re-entry, and softened risk systems● The genre split○ Arc Raiders as first-principles PvE extraction○ Marathon as PvP-first with extraction layered on top● The missing innovation question○ What is Marathon's true “Bungie leap” beyond sandbox combat + loot?● Overwatch's resurgence○ Systems-driven live ops vs content arms race with Marvel Rivals● The future of shooter ecosystems○ Extraction, hero shooters, and the erosion of “black hole” games

This week on VG Pulse, we’re slowly getting the techfail sorted out!! We start off with side notes of work and general life, before diving into the regular news where we discuss the shutting down of Highguard apparently being the fault of its players, Nintendo trying to swing big with a lawsuit against the tariffs, Arc Raiders and Discord having a security breach in an amazing way, and a whole lot of lawsuits against Steam! After the news, Millennium gives his review of Farming Simulator 25, and we give a joint review of Voidtrain, before closing out with talk of anime!! We continue with two big discussions about the games we have been playing. First up is Resident Evil Requiem, as one host has completed it and reviews it, while the other gives his early impressions. Do the Leon sections hold up as well as the Grace sections? Second up is ARC Raiders. Jon continues to recruit people into the extraction shooter and join him in Speranza,, including Nick! Is he as smitten as Jon is with the game? We also have some early thoughts about the Steam Deck and end on a review of the indie title, Pacific Drive. Thanks for listening! What happens when a legendary horror franchise finds its footing by looking backward? This week, we dive into Resident Evil Requiem, exploring why its tight, 10-hour dual-protagonist campaign is a masterclass in modern survival horror—and a perfect fit for gamers with a busy schedule. We also strap on our hover-skates for a review of High on Life 2, discussing how Squanch Games is navigating its new era and whether the controversial new traversal mechanics help or hinder the "Big Pharma" satire. Then, we shift gears to the extraction shooter wars. We share our hands-on impressions from the Marathon Server Slam, questioning if Bungie's bold, neon-soaked UI is a work of art or a usability nightmare compared to the more grounded Arc Raiders. Finally, we trace the 8-year secret history of Valve's Deadlock—from its "Neon Prime" sci-fi roots to its current status as a Steam chart-topper—and explain why this MOBA-shooter hybrid is poised to dominate the industry in 2026. This week on FnA Presents, we're catching up on everything we missed! Life and work got a little crazy last week, but that just means there's a lot to talk about. We kick things off with some Hollywood drama as Shia LaBeouf makes headlines again after his recent Mardi Gras arrest and controversial interview. From there we jump into trailer talk with the brand new Mortal Kombat 2 trailer, which finally looks like it's delivering the tournament fans have been waiting for, and the final season trailer for The Boys, where Homelander might actually be taking over the world.Next we head back to Westeros to talk about the emotional Season 1 finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, where Dunk and Egg begin their journey together on the road as hedge knight and squire. On the gaming side of things, Fred may finally be stepping away from the Wasteland after another long run through Fallout 4. Mods, Brotherhood loyalty, destroyed Institutes, and endless settlements… but burnout might finally be setting in. But something else has pulled him back in — ARC Raiders. After a rough experience with sweaty PvP players, some recent changes to the matchmaking system and new enemies have made the game feel fun again. Plus we take a look at Crimson Desert, the upcoming open-world RPG releasing March 19, 2026 that could end up being one of the biggest games of the year. Before wrapping up, we dive into some Marvel news, including updates on Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the latest leaks and rumors surrounding Avengers: Doomsday.Who takes down Homelander? Is Mortal Kombat finally doing the tournament right? Is Fred really done with Fallout… or will the Wasteland pull him back in again?Join us for another episode of FnA Presents. If you enjoyed the episode, make sure to like, follow, and share the show. Gotta 'cast 'em all! First, Ben, Matt James, and Steve Ahlman form a fireteam to discuss Bungie's long-awaited extraction shooter ‘Marathon.' They forecast whether it'll fare more like hit ‘ARC Raiders' or flop ‘Highguard,' examine the stakes for Sony's big bets on Bungie and live-service games, and react to a possible revival of the PlayStation/Xbox console wars, followed by a “Rage Quit” rant about the backlash to promotional photos for video game adaptations such as ‘God of War.' Then Ben brings on Charles Pulliam-Moore from The Verge to discuss the delights of Pokémon life-sim spinoff ‘Pokopia,' its significance for Switch 2, and the Pokémon franchise's 30th anniversary, evolution, and future, plus a second “Rage Quit” about the Trump administration coopting video games like ‘Pokopia' to make memes. Starting with Wildlight's HighGuard, which drew heavy criticism for inconsistent art direction, weak gameplay choices, lack of public playtesting, poor performance, and rapidly shrinking player counts, leading to major layoffs and a much smaller remaining team. We argue modern live-service shooters face intense competition and need earlier public feedback, noting broader post-COVID overfunding has produced many failed projects and layoffs, alongside debate over what “indie” means amid publisher funding like Tencent. They compare Eastern and Western development strengths, then review Bungie's Marathon playtest (strong gunfeel, UI/readability issues, clearer art direction improvements) and its competition with Arc Raiders. We close on Xbox leadership changes, the viability of consoles vs software-first strategies, exclusives, and industry uncertainty.Connect with us:•

Gaming can of course be an addiction. Like all things in life, balance is important and we ourselves are not above playing the occasional computer game as we all need a little escape here and there. In spirts and not letting it take over our life of course. Amongst other more creative things, one of our rituals we do for fun with our daughter is watch anime or game together. And recently we did an extremely rare acquisition and bought a new but used off Craigslist graphics card. By the way, we highly recommend the book "Chip War" on the subject of microchips and the massive importance of two companies on the planet, one of which is called ASML (Advanced Semiconductor Materials) which does extreme ultraviolet photolithography, creating the world's only machines that are required to manufacture the most advanced microchips, and the other is called TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) and is the company that manufactures the majority of the world's microchips using ASML hardware in Taiwan and is why that is such a crucial small country in the Earth realm currently. Right around the time of this new GPU acquisition a new game had recently been released which caught our eye and was an excuse to try out the new hardware. ———An Infinite Path podcast official URL http://www.aninfinitepath.comSpotify | iTunes | YouTube | Overcast FM | Stitcher | Player FM
