As Christians, we know the Bible is God's Word, meant to be a guide, a comforter, and a motivator as we each follow the path God has laid before us. But what might be of interest to you as you think about moving forward in your career, is that the Bible also talks extensively about business and offers insights for leaders at any place in their professional journey. If your God-given assignment is to work outside of your home or the WFH life, how do you manage the schedules and responsibilities and feelings that accompany those places? Mothering well is always hard - whether you work outside of the home or not. But moms who do work outside the home can feel a particular kind of difficulty caught between wanting to be the best mom and the best at work. My guest this week, Diane Paddison, gives us great encouragement and insight. As a single mom on a global executive team she zeroed in on what was important and built her schedule from those priorities. Diane has served as global executive of two Fortune 500 companies and is a leading advocate for women in the workplace. She is the founder and president of 4Word Women, a mentoring ministry for Christian women. As we head into the Easter Weekend, I wanted to go a bit off-topic and talk about faith and faith's interactions with your brand, business, and community.Your faith does not have to be separate from your business OR brand, which is what I want to explore in this episode. In case you didn't know, I am Catholic. I am Christian. I believe that we are obligated to make a positive impact in this world and help wherever we can, and that shapes how I live! That being said, I totally understand if faith isn't something you want to hear about. It's okay! I won't be offended if you skip this episode, and I promise I'll be back next week with more marketing lessons learned.Regardless of your personal beliefs—Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, spiritual, or something else entirely—faith can be a defining characteristic and I think it's important to feel comfortable displaying it.Faith can be shown in many different ways—some direct and some subtle. I joined an amazing group of Christian women called 4Word. I haven't made some meetings recently (life has been busy, busy lately!), but it is an amazing organization that was started by Diane Paddison, author of the book Work, Love, Pray.I LOVED her guiding principles for faith in the workplace, and had to share them:Be a Full-time Christian: Turning faith on and off is difficult—if not impossible.Remember WHO You Work For:Diane says that she fully believes that every good gift—even her job— comes from God. When you are at work, focus on serving your employer, but don't forget you are also serving God.As an example, if you are a slacker but are constantly sharing your beliefs, you're not focused on doing your job to your best ability. Your coworkers and clients aren't going to respect the faith of a slacker.Respect Your Colleagues:Always remember that the person next to you may be as devoted to their faith as you are to yours. Respect that!Show, Don't Tell:This is my FAVORITE principle and is one I strive to accomplish. The way you live speaks louder than the words you use. As St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Preach the gospel at all times—if necessary, use words.”Look for Allies:Pay attention to the details. People will note things and mention other topics and over time, you'll find allies and build camaraderie based in faith.Watch Your Language:Even if someone asks you a question that could invite you to talk about your faith, always think before you speak. Keep your response simple, powerful, and to the point. If someone wants to learn more, they'll ask! It's important to provide that option because not everyone is looking for your full faith journey.I hope you all have a great weekend, and if you have any comments or questions about today's episode feel free to reach out! I promise I show, not tell, more often than not, and wanted to create an episode for those curious about incorporating their faith into daily business life. The companies I mentioned: Looking to save time or get more information from AI?If you're just starting out with AI or looking to enhance your outputs, my book 'Mastering AI in Communications' is your essential guide. Guests: Sandy Olsson Ministry/Business: Sandy Olsson, Mentor & Speaker According to a recent survey by Olivet Nazarene University, there is a significant gender discrepancy in professional mentorship, with 82% of men having had male mentors. In comparison, just 69% of women have had female mentors. Finding a professional mentor can be a complex process that requires things like mutual learning and development, life-long experience and guidance, tools for growth in key areas of life, and most importantly, someone who is experienced in listening and able to help shift you in the right direction. Today's guest, Sandy Olsson, has years of experience in professional mentorship and talks with hosts Martha Brangenberg and Nadya Dickson about the power of women mentoring women. Sandy worked in the marketplace from an early age where she learned integrate her faith into her work. As she matured in her faith and personal leadership, Sandy began mentoring other women, later founding The Masters Program for Women, to help them discover and fulfill their God-given purpose through achieving balance, margin, and focus. Though she has handed the baton at The Masters Program for Women to Nadya Dickson, Sandy continues to mentor and encourage women at Biola in the MBA program and through 4Word women and in her own private mentorship program. She also has her own private mentoring program, which you can learn more about at mentorsandy.com. Diane Paddison is the founder of 4Word, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving professional Christian Women. She is also Independent Director at the Stan Johnson Company, Harvard Business School Christian Fellowship Alumni Association, and Behringer Harvard Opportunity REIT II, and a member of the National Advisory Board for the Salvation Army. She joins Jared Siegel to discuss her career journey, preparing children for the working world, and 4Word's mission. Here are a few highlights from their conversation: Jared asks Diane how she gets clarity on priorities despite having so many commitments. “It comes down to soul-searching and figuring out what's important to me,” she responds. “My family has always been my top priority, and even in the contracts of some of my jobs, I negotiated how much I would be willing to travel. There are a lot of things I did to set boundaries to stay focused, but it was a constant learning process.” Diane talks about the fulfillment she experienced in various stages of her career. She shares insights about her time at Trammell Crow Company; how she started, how she moved up, her accomplishments at the organization, and when she decided to move forward. “One of the things I learned the hard way was that it's critical to have the right people in the right seats; if you don't, you need to make changes fast and not allow them to linger,” Diane says. “Another lesson that I learned is that it makes a huge difference when people understand that you care about them.” Diane shares advice for parents. “Make sure your daughters and sons play team sports, because it teaches them how to work in a team environment, and that's important in the business world. Debate is a great place for your kids to learn and build confidence in their communication. And finally, get your daughters engaged in something competitive, especially if they have to work with boys. It enables them to feel comfortable no matter what gender the person they're working with is.” Jared asks Diane what her experience was like being the only woman on a C-suite board. “I just had this confidence [because of my mother's support] and my faith was a big part of it. But it really spurred a desire within me to help other women grow in their God-given potential with confidence because I knew that I was not the only one that should be in that room,” she replies. Part of the reason Diane founded 4Word was that she didn't like the fact that a lot of companies weren't allowing people to bring their full selves to work. She was blessed to be granted that opportunity at Trammel, and sought to help other women get the support she did. “Our vision is to grow a global community of Christian women in the workplace,” she adds. Success Made to Last with Diane Paddison founder of 4wordwomen.org, setting the vision scape for 2021. This show will focus on : With over 600 mentees graduating from the 4word 10 week mentor program to date, what is the game changer for the mentee? prayer and Holy Spirit inspired decision making. Besides prayer, what else makes the difference? commitment, perseverance, and courage/confidence. Her mentor helped her pivot their business in 2016 to the fellows program, a multi-level marketing distribution model away from boutique distribution. You'll hear her mention “fellows program” in the video. Sseko Designs wouldn't have survived the pandemic without this move. In addition, I have an amazing sequel to the story that Liz shared with 4word's NYC Community Group in May and with our 4word C-Level women in September at our 3rd annual C-Level Forum. The third game changer is a mentee expressing gratitude/appreciation. Example: This is what mentee, Brooke, wrote and sent to her mentor, Lauren, along with a bouquet of flowers - “Dear Lauren, Thank you for being such a wonderful mentor to me this summer. I now understand how divine providence facilitated our pairing. I cannot put into words the extent to which your thoughtfulness, guidance, and wisdom will play an important role in my life in this coming year. I am determined to take action in more ways than one and truly feel in my spirit that God was working through you with me.” Brooke This relationship doesn't typically end at the end of 10 weeks.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Click Here for the blog post and resources from this episode “Our real vision…is that we will help women—through God’s hand leading us—see that their faith should be a part of every minute of every day, that their relationships should be their priority, and that their work is a place God has called them to be.” –Diane Paddison At the age of sixteen, Diane Paddison was leading crews of eighty people on her family’s Oregon farm. As an adult, she was often the sole woman in Fortune 500 and 1000 boardrooms. Diane realized the crucial importance of a mentor early on, and now pays it forward mentoring countless women through her website 4wordwomen.org and her book, “Work, Love and Pray.” Through trials of her own, Diane learned how to pray fervently, stay grounded in God’s Word and surround herself with a support system of women who were fellow believers. She also went through the “Half Time” system, where she realized that God had prepared her with her experiences professionally and relationally, with a firm foundation of faith. She met Bob Buford, who encouraged her to write her book and catapulted her to start her ministry to “connect, lead and support professional women to reach their God-given potential.” “Try to find companies where your values and priorities align. And then try to find roles where your strengths align with that role.” –Diane Paddison What You Will Learn: The importance of a mentor and how to find your own mentor How to focus your goals in these three areas: professional, relational and spiritual goals The keys to putting fear behind you and overcoming hardships How to discern God’s will for your life and reach your full potential How to discover where your energy comes from and what you are passionate about Resources: 4wordwomen.org “Work, Love and Pray” and companion study guide by Diane Paddison “Half Time” by Bob Buford Christianity Today Bio Diane Paddison, 4word Founder and President, is a Harvard MBA graduate, former global executive of two Fortune 500 companies and one Fortune 1000 company, and serves as an independent director for two corporations and four not-for-profits. But her life’s passion is mentoring professional women. The leading advocate for the professional Christian women community, Paddison published Work, Love, Pray in 2011 while laying the foundation for 4word. The book cast a vision for women of faith who represent a growing share of the fulltime workforce, yet are underserved in resources compared to the men around them. Featuring 15 women leaders who found personal and business success while keeping faith at their core, Work, Love, Pray affirms and challenges women who feel uniquely called to the workplace. Diane’s heart for encouraging professional women took root in her early in her commercial real estate career, an industry where few women held mid-level roles, and were virtually absent in senior leadership. Crossing lines of tradition, Diane approached the top company executive – a man – to express her professional goals and ask for mentoring. He agreed, and since then, Diane has been purposeful in supporting women around her with the lessons she learned. Mentorship is a lifestyle: even when traveling to a regional office on business, she often reserves a lunch hour to gather women company-wide to foster relationships. She led the development of the CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women) “Bridging the C-Suite Gap” mentoring program, credited with the advancement of many participants to senior executive ranks since it launched. Diane Paddison speaks on life/work balance, mentoring/sponsorship, and impactful leadership at events across the country. She authors weekly posts at 4wordwomen.org, and is a featured columnist for Today’s Christian Women – a Christianity Today digital magazine. Diane serves on the board for the Harvard Business School Christian Fellowship Alumni Association. Diane and her husband, Chris, have four children and live in Dallas, Texas.
