Send us a textFrom behind federal prison walls, Chuckie Taylor delivers a powerful and meticulously detailed account of what he describes as one of America's most troubling miscarriages of justice. With scholarly precision, Taylor breaks down the legal irregularities, political motivations, and constitutional violations that led to his unprecedented 97-year sentence in America's first-ever torture case.Taylor's petition begins by unveiling startling political connections: his prosecution was allegedly pushed by former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf through her relationship with President George W. Bush, evidenced by Laura Bush's attendance at Sirleaf's inauguration. The timing strategically coincided with mounting international pressure on the US to prosecute under its anti-torture statute following controversies surrounding enhanced interrogation techniques after 9/11.The most compelling aspect of Taylor's argument centers on a fundamental legal contradiction. The anti-torture statute (18 USC 2340) specifically targets "public officials acting under color of law." Taylor explains this created an irreconcilable conflict: his indictment was built on his status as a US citizen, yet to qualify as a "public official" under the statute, he would have needed to be a Liberian citizen. This contradiction, he argues, represents an unconstitutional application that violated his Fifth Amendment rights.Through court document citations and transcript references that listeners can independently verify, Taylor methodically deconstructs his trial. He reveals how the judge imposed restrictive protective orders that made defense investigation in post-war Liberia nearly impossible. Perhaps most disturbing are allegations that prosecutors shared defense witness lists with Liberian authorities, resulting in threats and violence against witnesses' families. Meanwhile, prosecution witnesses received substantial payments—$5,000 each, equivalent to three years' salary in Liberia.Taylor's voice carries the weight of someone who has spent years studying law from inside prison walls, determined to understand how the system failed him. His petition isn't just a plea for personal justice, but a warning about how media manipulation, political convenience, and prosecutorial overreach can combine to deprive anyone of liberty. Without clemency or pardon intervention, Taylor states plainly, "I will die in prison."Support the showFollow our IG & Twitter for live updates @LFTGRadio

In this special episode of Consider the Constitution, Dr. Katie Crawford-Lackey explores the evolving role of America's First Ladies with Anita McBride, former Assistant to President George W. Bush and Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush, and co-author of "Remember the First Ladies: The Legacies of America's History-Making Women." Though the Constitution never defines this role, First Ladies, from Martha Washington to today, have wielded significant influence in shaping policy, diplomacy, and national identity. McBride shares fascinating insights about how these women served as essential partners to presidents while carving out their own legacies - from Dolley Madison saving White House treasures during war to Lady Bird Johnson advocating for civil rights in the hostile South. Drawing from her extensive research for her book, McBride reveals how these remarkable women used their "automatic powerful platform" to advance the nation, even when they themselves lacked constitutional rights.

The White House showcases the very best of American culinary arts, whether it's providing the president some much needed nourishment after a long day or using a meal as a diplomatic tool between two nations. White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford spent almost 30 years working in the White House kitchens before retiring in July 2024. Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association, spoke with Chef Comerford about growing up in the Philippines, falling in love with cooking, and becoming a U.S. citizen who never dreamed one day she would cook at the most famous address in America. Chef Comerford started as an assistant chef in 1995 during the Clinton presidency, and just 10 years later was named Executive Chef by First Lady Laura Bush. Chef Comerford was the first woman and first person of color named to the top position in the White House kitchen. She cooked for five presidents and their families, dozens of dignitaries, and literally thousands of guests from all around the world - overseeing more than 50 state dinners along the way. The key to cooking at the White House? Chef Comerford says it's being able to listen and read the room properly because at the end of the day “...this is not your restaurant. This is not about you, it's about the president or the family who are living in that White House at the moment.” Hear about what it takes to put on a state dinner, which president has his own chili recipe, and much more about cooking at the White House.

During election season, voters hope to glimpse the true selves of presidential candidates. And sometimes, revealing details hide in plain sight. On this week's On the Media, one reporter sifts through political memoirs for truths about politicians and the people they lead. Plus, in vivid detail, a novelist imagines the private lives of former presidents.[01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone speaks with Carlos Lozada, New York Times Opinion columnist and a co-host of the weekly “Matter of Opinion” podcast. Lozada explains how he mines political memoirs for deeper understanding of our political figures by examining what they include and what they omit.[16:43] Brooke speaks with Vinson Cunningham, author of the novel Great Expectations. Cunningham, who is now a theater critic at The New Yorker, worked on the 2008 Obama campaign and later in the White House. Great Expectations is inspired by that time in his life and the difficult-to-read candidate for the presidency.[35:05] Brooke interviews novelist Curtis Sittenfeld about her exploration of the minds of political figures through fiction, first in American Wife (inspired by Laura Bush) and next in Rodham, which considers what Hilary Clinton's life would have looked like if she had never married Bill. They discuss the questions that led Sittenfeld to write those novels and why fiction based on real people makes readers so uncomfortable — especially the sex scenes. This show originally aired on our May 3, 2024 program, How to Read a President, with Carlos Lozada, Vinson Cunningham, and Curtis Sittenfeld.Further reading:The Washington Book by Carlos LozadaGreat Expectations by Vinson CunninghamAmerican Wife and Rodham by Curtis SittenfeldCurtis Sittenfeld: ‘People misunderstood the sex scenes in Rodham' On the Media is supported by listeners like you. Cunningham, who is now a theater critic at The New Yorker, worked on the 2008 Obama campaign and later in the White House. Great Expectations is inspired by that time in his life, and the difficult-to-read candidate for the presidency.[35:19] Brooke interviews novelist Curtis Sittenfeld about her exploration of the minds of political figures through fiction, first in American Wife (inspired by Laura Bush) and next in Rodham, which considers what Hilary Clinton's life would have looked like if she had never married Bill. They discuss the questions that led Sittenfeld to write those novels and why fiction based on real people makes readers so uncomfortable — especially the sex scenes.Further reading:The Washington Book by Carlos LozadaGreat Expectations by Vinson CunninghamAmerican Wife and Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld On the Media is supported by listeners like you. We speak with New York Times Reporter Katie Rogers about her new book "American Woman." The book takes an in-depth look at the history of the role from Hillary Clinton, to Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, Melania Trump, and finally, Jill Biden.
So much news coverage is devoted to the president, but it turns out that first ladies have had an incredibly influential and undercovered role in many White Houses. At the same time, it is an often thankless job that receives a lot of scrutiny. Mosheh sits down with New York Times White House correspondent and author, Katie Rogers, exploring her new book, ‘American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady.' In our conversation, we dive straight into Jill Biden's role in the White House, especially when it comes to managing crises, from international wars to the struggles of Hunter Biden–including what it means that she is the family “grudge holder.” This edition also delves into how several other recent first ladies—Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton–how each viewed their roles over the last 30 years, and some surprising revelations about their time in the White House. First ladies are among the most powerful advisers in any White House and Jill Biden is no exception. On this episode of Deep Dive, host and Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza is joined by NYT White House correspondent Katie Rogers, who recently published “American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden,” an authoritative account of how this century's first ladies have influenced the nation. Ryan and Katie discuss Jill Biden and Melania Trump's roles in staffing, campaigning, and policy decisions; sensitive items from their times in the White House, such as Melania and Donald's prenup; and whether or not Jill Biden has ever forgiven Kamala Harris for what she said about Joe in 2020. Additionally, Katie opened up about the time her editors at the New York Times sent her to Arkansas and forced her to report a story about the Bidens that she didn't want to cover — and how it ended up forcing Jill and Joe to confront an uncomfortable truth about their family. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Katie Rogers is a White House correspondent for The New York Times. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio. Alex Keeney is a senior producer for POLITICO audio.

Bush and Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush, and is the current director of American University's First Ladies Initiative. She is also a founding member of the First Ladies Association for Research and Education (FLARE) alongside Diana Carlin and Nancy Kegan Smith. These three have co-authored a new college textbook called “U.S. First Ladies: Making History and Leaving Legacies.” The textbook is the first of its kind, and includes a foreword by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. There will also be a trade book released called "Remember the First Ladies: The Legacies of America's History-Making Women." Association president and host Stewart McLaurin sat down with Anita at the Dolley Madison House in Washington, DC for an insightful interview that reveals a fascinating history of how first ladies have influenced American society, public policy, diplomacy, and life in the White House.
