Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, belongs to a small cluster of galaxies – the Local Group. It has fewer than a hundred known members. But most galaxies reside in much more impressive clusters. And the closest of these is centered in the constellation Virgo, which steps up the eastern sky this evening. The Virgo Cluster contains roughly 2,000 galaxies. They move through space together, bound by their mutual gravitational pull. The cluster’s most impressive member is Messier 87. It marks the center of the cluster, more than 50 million light-years away. M87 may span a million light-years and contain trillions of stars – many times the corresponding values for the Milky Way. And its total mass is more than twice the Milky Way’s. M87 is a different type of galaxy. The Milky Way is a spiral – a flat disk highlighted by “arms” of bright stars that make it look like a pinwheel. M87, on the other hand, is elliptical – it resembles a fat, fuzzy football. It may have grown so large through the mergers of several big galaxies. That scrambled the stars, so they orbit the center of M87 in all directions. The heart of the galaxy harbors a black hole more than a thousand times the mass of the central black hole in the Milky Way. It was the first black hole to have its picture taken – a dark shadow at the heart of a giant galaxy. More darkness in Virgo tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
We know Earth's exact spot in the universe thanks to a mix of astronomy and technology. First, we figured out we're the third planet orbiting the Sun, which is part of the Milky Way galaxy—a giant spiral of stars. Then, astronomers mapped out the Milky Way itself, realizing it's in a smaller arm of the galaxy called the Orion Arm. Beyond that, we know the Milky Way is part of a group of galaxies called the Local Group, which is in an even bigger structure called the Virgo Supercluster. Using telescopes and satellites, scientists also track Earth's position relative to other stars, galaxies, and cosmic landmarks like quasars. But can we be sure we're right about the position of our Earth? #brightside Animation is created by Bright Side. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music from TheSoul Sound: https://thesoul-sound.com/ Listen to Bright Side on: Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0hUkPxD... Stretching about 100,000 light-years in diameter, it is a part of a larger group of galaxies known as the Local Group. This majestic galaxy, seen from Earth as a milky band of light arching across the night sky, contains a complex structure of spiral arms wrapped around a dense central bulge, which is believed to harbor a supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A*.
t is the largest member of the Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way, Triangulum, and several smaller galaxies. The Andromeda Galaxy is the largest nearby galaxy to the Milky Way, with a diameter of approximately 220,000 light-years. It is visible to the naked eye on a clear night as a faint, fuzzy patch in the constellation Andromeda.
No matter what you're doing right now – sitting, standing, walking – you're moving. First, because Earth is spinning around on its axis. This rotation is the reason we have days. Second, because Earth and other planets in our solar system are orbiting the sun. That's why we have years. Third, you're moving because the sun and the rest of our solar system is orbiting the center of the Milky Way galaxy at over 500,000 miles per hour. If all of that isn't nauseating enough, everything in the entire universe is expanding outward. All the time. But in the 1970s, astrophysicists noticed something strange about our galactic neighborhood, or Local Group. The whole clump of neighboring galaxies was being pulled off course at over one million miles per hour, towards something we couldn't see — the "Great Attractor." This Great Attractor sits in the "Zone of Avoidance," an area of space that is blocked from view by the stars and gas of the Milky Way. Today on the show, host Regina G. Barber talks to astrophysicist Jorge Moreno about this mysterious phenomenon: What it might be and what will happen when we eventually reach it. Curious about other cosmic mysteries? If you look at a map of just about any state, you'll see a few major cities, a few more mid-sized ones, and a whole bunch of small towns. And the same thing happens if you look at a map of our galactic neighborhood. There are a couple of giant galaxies, a few mid-sized ones, and a whole bunch of little ones. They're all bound to each other by their mutual gravitational pull. This collection of galaxies is known as the Local Group. It spans about 10 million light-years, and contains a hundred or so known members, with more added every year. The “big cities” of the Local Group are our home galaxy, the Milky Way, and the Andromeda Galaxy, M31. Each is a disk that's at least a hundred thousand light-years wide, and contains hundreds of billions of stars. After these two behemoths, the list includes a few mid-size members. The largest is the Triangulum Galaxy. It's about half the diameter of M31 and the Milky Way, but only a few percent as massive. A couple of mid-size galaxies are satellites of M31. One is a spiral, while the other is a small elliptical galaxy, which looks like a fuzzy rugby ball. And two more members of the mid-size brigade orbit the Milky Way — the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Most of the other members of the Local Group are tiny — far smaller, and with far fewer stars, than the larger galaxies. Many are satellites of the Milky Way, and we'll have more about them tomorrow. Constraints on dark matter annihilation and decay from the large-scale structure of the nearby universe by Deaglan J. Bartlett et al. on Wednesday 30 November Decaying or annihilating dark matter particles could be detected through gamma-ray emission from the species they decay or annihilate into. This is usually done by modelling the flux from specific dark matter-rich objects such as the Milky Way halo, Local Group dwarfs, and nearby groups. However, these objects are expected to have significant emission from baryonic processes as well, and the analyses discard gamma-ray data over most of the sky. Here we construct full-sky templates for gamma-ray flux from the large-scale structure within $sim$200 Mpc by means of a suite of constrained $N$-body simulations (CSiBORG) produced using the Bayesian Origin Reconstruction from Galaxies algorithm. Marginalising over uncertainties in this reconstruction, small-scale structure, and parameters describing astrophysical contributions to the observed gamma-ray sky, we compare to observations from the Fermi Large Area Telescope to constrain dark matter annihilation cross sections and decay rates through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis. We rule out the thermal relic cross section for $s$-wave annihilation for all $m_chi lesssim 7 {rm , GeV}/c^2$ at 95% confidence if the annihilation produces gluons or quarks less massive than the bottom quark. We infer a contribution to the gamma-ray sky with the same spatial distribution as dark matter decay at $3.3sigma$. Although this could be due to dark matter decay via these channels with a decay rate $Gamma approx 6 times 10^{-28} {rm , s^{-1}}$, we find that a power-law spectrum of index $p=-2.75^{+0.71}_{-0.46}$, likely of baryonic origin, is preferred by the data. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2205.12916v2

Almost every galaxy is giving birth to at least a few stars. But a giant stellar nursery on the rim of M33, the Triangulum Galaxy, takes starbirth to the extreme. It is giving birth to thousands of stars — including many that are among the hottest, brightest, and most massive yet seen. M33 is the third-largest member of the Local Group, a collection of scores of galaxies. The Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are its largest members. M33 is about half the diameter of the Milky Way, and contains perhaps one-tenth as many stars. Several loosely wound spiral arms wrap around its nucleus. The arms contain huge amounts of gas and dust — the raw materials for new stars. Much of it congregates in a collection of stellar nurseries. The largest is NGC 604. It's about 6,000 times brighter than the Orion Nebula, the closest major nursery to Earth. NGC 604 is only a few million years old, but it's already given birth to about 200 superstars — up to 120 times the mass of the Sun. Many of them will explode. M33 is about three million light-years away, in the constellation Triangulum, which is low in the east-northeast as night falls. Under especially dark skies, the galaxy is just visible to those with good eyesight. Everyone else needs help to see this busy galaxy. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Gossip Galaxy here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of the universe's elite. I have it on *expert* authority that the Milky Way is stirring up cosmic drama. Has this Local Group galaxy had enough of its central black hole? Will they or won't they with Andromeda? And is spaghettification the real dish of the summer? Dr. Moiya McTier and Jonathan tell all in this week's stellar episode. Dr. Moiya McTier is an astrophysicist, folklorist, and science communicator based in New York City. Her new book The Milky Way: An Autobiography of our Galaxy is out now. After graduating from Harvard as the first person in the school's history to study both astronomy and mythology, Moiya earned her PhD in astrophysics at Columbia University where she was selected as a National Science Foundation research fellow. Moiya has consulted with companies like Disney and PBS on their fictional worlds, helped design exhibits for the New York Hall of Science, and given hundreds of talks about science around the globe (including features on MSNBC, NPR, and NowThis News). To combine her unique set of expertise, Moiya hosts and produces the Exolore podcast that explores fictional world-building through the lens of science. When she's not researching space or imagining new worlds, Moiya can likely be found watching trashy reality TV with her cat, Kosmo.
