On this week's motivation monday, I'm talking to Alison Arngrim. New York Times Best Selling author of Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series Little House On The Prairie, and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Arngrim performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all-French version titled: Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie and La Malle aux Tresors de Nellie Oleson. As a stand-up comedian, Arngrim has headlined at nightclubs such as the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los Angeles; as well as the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York and assorted comedy venues across the United States and Canada. She is currently starring in two comedy series pilots: Life Interrupted, as the ex-wife of commercial child star Mason Reese, with Erin Murphy, (“Bewitched”) as her new wife and Dawn Wells, (“Gilligan's Island), as her mother, as well as, C.P.R. – Child Performers Resurrection Talent Agency, as an ex-child star gone wrong, trying to save herself and her assorted misfit cohorts by opening a talent agency. Arngrim has mocked her status as an “ex-child star” on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, during their month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor” and continues to be a frequent interview subject on everything from A&E, “E! Entertainment, TV Land and VH-1, to CNN and the Travel Channel. The TV Land network honored her undying image as TV's worst bitch, by declaring her the winner of their 2006 award for, “Character Most Desperately In Need Of A Time Out.” She starred in the heartwarming, gay, Christmas cult classic, Make the Yuletide Gay, as the overbearing “Heather Mancuso.” Her other television and film appearances include, Livin' the Dream, Tinder & Grinder, The Bilderberg Club, For the Love of May with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal, and The Last Place On Earth with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis Diller. In 2007, she began her foray into French cinema with the role of “Edith” in the French detective comedy, Jean Pierre Mocky's Le Deal. Her stage work includes, The Vagina Monologs, Sirena: Queen of the Tango, Dear Brutus, The Wool Gatherer, the French bedroom farce, In One Bed And Out The Other, Michael Kearns' AIDS/US II, “Rita” in the 2005 GLAAD Award nominated production of Last Summer At Bluefish Cove, the somewhat off kilter “Reverend Pat Miass” in Joni and Gina's Wedding, and the Ovation Award Nominated musical-drama, Flirting with Morty, as the abusive, trashy and tragic Ray Lee. In her spare time, she takes tourists on the rollicking comedy outing, Nasty Nellie's Tour of Hollywood, (featured at Dearly Departed Tours), where she simultaneously enlightens and amuses passengers with behind the scenes tales from both Hollywood history and her own life. Offstage, Arngrim has been a dedicated and compassionate AIDS activist for nearly three decades, volunteering for AIDS Project Los Angeles and Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. In addition, Arngrim currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children, or PROTECT.org, fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse.
Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Volker Then, an independent Senior Impact Analyst who is launching a start-up company on Comprehensive Impact Measurement together with a coalition of impact partners. From 2022 to 2024, Volker was Founding Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Executive Board of Fondazione AIS (Advancing Impact and Sustainability) in Bologna. Earlier in his career, Volker was Executive Director of the Centre for Social Investment at Heidelberg University for 15 years and also served as Director Philanthropy and Foundations at the Bertelsmann Foundation. He is a former member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the OECD's Global Action “Social and Solidarity Economy” and served on the National Advisory Board of the G7-Social Impact Investment Task Force. Impact is a big word nowadays – maybe even a buzzword – and people in our space are using it broadly and frequently. But it's not clear that everyone has a clear shared definition of the term. Volker provides his definition of “impact”, especially as it relates to enterprise families and the objectives they set for themselves with regard to fulfilling the purpose of their wealth and their family capital. One of the greatest challenges, and opportunities, in the world of impact is the measurement of the effectiveness and outcomes of impact initiatives. Volker talks about the latest thinking and work that is being done in this area, especially the thought leadership and development he has been spearheading in his prior role at Fondazione AIS and now in his current venture. Volker offers his tips and suggestions for enterprise families who are just starting or are early in their impact journey, focusing on what he recommends they do to get better educated and equipped to realize their impact ambitions. He then turns to enterprise families who are more advanced and have a developed impact framework and strategy, sharing his advice on what they can do to further the reach and consequence of their impact programs and strategies. Don't miss this enlightening conversation with one of the foremost thought leaders in the realm of impact definition and measurement.
Listeners, what were you doing in 2004? Perhaps you were strolling down the street in low rise jeans, Uggs, and a Livestrong bracelet listening to Outkast's “Hey Ya!” Or maybe you were sitting in a movie theater ready to have your mind blown by Ashton Kutcher's tour de force performance in The Butterfly Effect. Well, the folks joining us on this week's episode of our podcast may have missed some of that stuff because they were too busy building a movement for healthcare justice! 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Healthcare NOW, the national organization fighting for Medicare for All that brings you your favorite podcast! If you're a regular listener, you probably know that I was the Executive Director of Healthcare NOW for 11 years, and Gillian is the current Executive Director, but today we're taking it back to 2004 and talking with some of the OGs who started it all! This episode features some of our very favorite people -- the leaders in the healthcare justice movement who have made Healthcare NOW what it is today (the creator of your favorite podcast content!): Mark Dudzic is a longtime union organizer and activist. He served as national organizer of the Labor Party from 2003 to 2007 and was a cofounder of the Labor Campaign for Single Payer in 2009. He has been a member of the Healthcare Now board since its founding in 2004. Lindy Hern is the Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and President of the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology. She has been on the Healthcare NOW board since 2009 and is the author of “Single Payer Healthcare Reform: Grassroots Mobilization and the Turn Against Establishment Politics in the Medicare for All Movement." Donna Smith is an advocate for single payer, improved and expanded Medicare for all. Her journalism career included work as a stringer for NEWSWEEK magazine, editing and reporting for the Black Hills Pioneer in South Dakota, as well as appearances on CNN and Bill Moyers Journal, and as one of the subjects in Michael Moore's 2007 film, SiCKO. She worked for National Nurses United and traveled more than 250,000 miles advocating for health justice. She now serves as the National Advisory Board chair for Progressive Democrats of America. Walter Tsou is a Board Advisor to Physicians for a National Health Program and on the Board of HCN. He has been a long time single payer healthcare activist. Walter is a former Health Commissioner of Philadelphia and Past President of the American Public Health Association. Cindy Young has been a healthcare activist for over 40 years. She has served on the Health Care Now board since 2012. In her retirement, she serves as a Vice President for the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA), whose principle goal is to establish a single payer system in California. If this episode doesn't give you your fill of Healthcare NOW history, you can always check out Lindy's book or this sweet tribute to our founder Marilyn Clement. And of course, if you want to keep up the good work of all these amazing folks, you can make a donation to support our work!
Environmental Justice - an effort to affirmatively address disproportionate pollution and environmental burdens borne by low-income and minority communities - grew from an Executive Order by President Clinton in 1994 through expanded efforts across the entire federal government with special emphasis at DOJ and the EPA in the Biden Administration. President Trump issued an Executive Order on his second day in office prohibiting "... all discriminatory and illegal preferences...," followed by a Memorandum by Attorney General Pam Bondi rescinding the Environmental Justice policies of prior administrations. What are the implications of this Administration’s cancelling of environmental justice writ large? What does this mean for environmental enforcement and infrastructure development in low-income and minority communities? Do its concepts still live on in the federal government and at state and local levels? Join us for a balanced discussion of these questions and more.Featuring:Michael Buschbacher, Partner, Boyden Gray PLLCHorace Cooper, Chairman, Project 21 National Advisory Board, National Center for Public Policy ResearchJohn C. As Elon Musk continues to plot, with Trumpian glee, against the American Federal government, it is important to remind ourselves of the essential value of this state bureaucracy. As the founding president and CEO of the Washington DC based Partnership for Public Service, Max Stier has spent the last quarter century focused on making American government more efficient and accountable. And Stier's warning about the incoming administration is critically important. Yes, he acknowledges, some of Musk's misgivings about the inefficiencies of the Federal bureaucracy are fair, but that isn't an excuse for a descent into what Stier describes as the patrimonial politics of MAGA in which the interests of Trump and of the American state are treated identically. The American Republic was founded against the 18th century absolutist conceit that L'État, c'est moi. So all Max Stier is doing, at the Partnership for Public Service, is defending the values of the Founders who, wanted to protect the Republic from a patrimonial state.Max Stier is the founding president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service. Under his leadership, the Partnership has been widely praised as a first-class nonprofit organization and thought leader on federal government management issues. Max has worked previously in all three branches of the federal government. In 1982, he served on the personal staff of Congressman Jim Leach. Max clerked for Chief Judge James Oakes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1992 and clerked for Justice David Souter of the United States Supreme Court in 1994. Between these two positions, Max served as Special Litigation Counsel to Assistant Attorney General Anne Bingaman at the Department of Justice. In 1995, Max joined the law firm of Williams & Connolly where he practiced primarily in the area of white collar defense. Max comes most recently from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, having served as the Deputy General Counsel for Litigation. A graduate of Yale University and Stanford Law School, Max is a member of the Inaugural Advisory Council of the National Institute of Social Sciences, the National Academy of Public Administration, the Administrative Conference of the United States and the National Advisory Board for Public Service at Harvard College.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Dr. Milton Mills, MD is a practicing urgent care physician in the Washington DC area, with a focus on the use of nutritional measures to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. He is an Associate Director of Preventive Medicine and a member of the National Advisory Board for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), where he has been a major contributor to position papers presented to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Dr. Mills has published several research journal articles dealing with racial bias in federal nutrition policy and has been the lead plaintiff in PCRM's class action lawsuit that asks for warning labels on milk. He is also a frequent volunteer at free medical clinics and travels widely, speaking at hospitals, churches and community centers throughout the country. Dr. Mills was featured in the documentary “What the Health” and will also appear in the upcoming film “The Silent Vegan”. He is a strong advocate for plant-based eating and addressing cultural disruption in the food system, particularly in communities of color. Through his work, Dr. Mills aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and to promote the use of sustainable, plant-based diets for both personal and planetary health. Dr. Mills discusses the impact of cultural disruption on plant-based eating and health in the BIPOC community in Nicolette's seventh PhD Podcast. Dr. Mills explains that BIPOC communities have become dumping grounds for agricultural excess, leading to food scarcity and a lack of access to nutritious food. He advocates for the use of core crops, such as the Three Sisters (corn, beans, and squash), which provide good calories and adequate nutrition while also being sustainable and renewable. Dr. Mills highlights the historical impact of Western culture on the diets of POC, including the use of commodity crops, and how it has resulted in systemic and structural racism. He argues that Western medicine operates from a disease model and must change the way it practices medicine, as band-aids will not cure diseases. Dr. Mills emphasizes the importance of decolonizing our diet, mindset, and way of relating to the world to protect the planet and ourselves. He advocates for narrative medicine to address trauma and abuse and for doctors to unlearn bad habits and become part of the solution. Remember, you can watch the Superpowers for Good show on e360tv. To watch the episode, download the #e360tv channel app to your streaming device–Roku, AppleTV or AmazonFireTV–or your mobile device. You can even watch it on the web.Devin: Amanda, what do you see as your superpower?Amanda: When Josh first reached out to me, he graduated from NYU Stern Business School. He brought in a few of his middle school friends. I was actually very self-conscious because I didn't really know anything about business. I didn't have a business background or anything like that, but I realized pretty quickly that my superpower is not necessarily the financial, logistical, the minute hard skills but more of the soft skills, more of the way that I relate to people, the way that I can understand people, the way that we're working with teenagers.Devin: Amogh, what do you think is your superpower?Amogh: I think my superpower lies in the fact that I am young, and I drive youth empowerment, youth leadership.Devin: Gavin, what is your superpower?Gavin: I wanted to use my superpower and engage students. So actually, with the organization I helped with, with their first-ever networking workshop. So, I show students how to use LinkedIn, how to send messages to politicians, industry professionals.Years ago, I had Joshua's Heart Foundation's founder, Joshua Williams, on the show to talk about his remarkable organization. At the time, he was a young teenager and had already been at work feeding people who were hungry and food insecure for nearly a decade. When he launched the effort, he understood he was creating a movement to feed those who need help but likely didn't fully appreciate the more radical impact he was having by empowering children and teenagers to lead.Recently, we reconnected, and he introduced me to some of the young people who lead the effort today.Amanda Aviles serves on the newly constituted National Advisory Board. Members of the board are Joshua's Heart alumni volunteers scattered around the country. Some participated with Joshua as peers in the earliest days when their little hands and arms couldn't carry much food but when their minds could immediately grasp the impact of providing food to someone who needed it.Gavin Poore and Amogh Baranwal are both in high school. They are members of the Junior Advisor Board, which has the primary responsibility for leading the organization. They are two of the day-to-day leaders. Both trace their roots in the organization back in time for years. Amogh shared his recollection of volunteering at age six:The one memory that I have that has always stuck with me is that when I was in line, we used to have people come to us, and we would shop with them like a grocery store, so they would get to choose exactly what they wanted to take home. A family came with another six-year-old, and this was the first time I had seen someone who looked like me–we're the same age, we might have gone to the same school, or we might have had similar life experiences at that age. When I gave his family that box of food, I saw his smile brighten up. I was shocked. Something that I take for granted. I never think, “When's the next food going to be on the table?” Or when the next family dinner is going to be. It's something that just happens. So, to see someone my age see so much joy from something that I took for granted really opened my eyes to the many problems that many people face–even at six years old. So, it is cool to tell people that I started volunteering when I was six, but it's sad to know that there are six-year-olds who didn't get that same opportunity because of the circumstances they were put in. So ever since that day, I have been grateful for our Foundation for giving me these opportunities and allowing me to experience giving back firsthand. His story represents well the experiences of other young people who volunteered regularly with Joshua's Heart. The truly remarkable things about the nonprofit founded by a four-year-old may not be the people it feeds but the leaders it builds.AI Episode Summary* This is an interview with three young people involved with Joshua's Heart Foundation: Amanda Aviles, Gavin Poore, and Amogh Baranwal.* Joshua's Heart Foundation was started in 2005 by a young boy named Joshua who had a passion for feeding the hungry.* The foundation's primary mission is to fight hunger and engage and empower youth in that fight.* The organization is facing the challenge of keeping its founders and early participants involved while preserving the youth-led nature of the organization.* The organization is split into three parts: core volunteers, a junior advisory board, and a national advisory board.* Amanda Aviles believes her superpower is her ability to connect with people and understand them, particularly younger individuals.* Amogh Baranwal believes his superpower lies in his youth and the ability to empower and inspire other young people.* Gavin Poore sees his superpower as youth engagement, helping other young people find their voice and engage in positive change.* The organization can be supported through donations, and volunteers are accepted, but mainly from the South Florida area.* The best way to stay in touch with the organization is through its website and social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn.Guest ProfilesAmanda Aviles (she/her):Director of Strategy, Joshua's Heart FoundationAbout Joshua's Heart Foundation: Joshua's Heart Foundation (JHF) was founded in 2005 in Miami Beach, Fla. by Joshua Williams when he was four years old. This week we will discuss Palliative vs Hospice with Dr. Karl Steinberg. Palliative Care, Hospice Care, End-of-Life Care, Serious Illness Care, and Advance Care Planning/POLST all represent important elements of care for individuals dealing with serious illness, particularly those facing end-of-life situations. These are related but distinct concepts within the healthcare system. Palliative Care: This is a type of care that is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment. It's not limited to end-of-life scenarios and can help patients manage symptoms and side effects of disease or its treatment. Hospice Care: This is a specific type of palliative care for patients who are in the final stages of an incurable disease and have chosen to focus on comfort and quality of life rather than treatments aimed at cure. Generally, hospice care is considered when patients have a life expectancy of 6 months or less. It is often provided in the patient's home but can also be provided in hospice centers, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and nursing homes. End-of-Life Care: This refers to the support and medical care given during the time surrounding death. End-of-life care can include a broad range of possible treatments and support, depending on the patient's needs. It might include treating pain and other uncomfortable symptoms, providing emotional and spiritual support, and helping the patient and their family make decisions about care. Both palliative and hospice care can be part of end-of-life care. Serious Illness Care: This is a broad term that includes all types of care that someone with a serious, potentially life-limiting illness may receive. This can include everything from aggressive treatments aimed at curing or controlling the disease to palliative and hospice care aimed at managing symptoms and improving quality of life. Advance Care Planning/POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment): Advance Care Planning involves making decisions about the care you would want to receive if you become unable to speak for yourself. These decisions are often documented in an advance directive. A POLST form is a type of advance directive that becomes an actionable medical order when signed by a healthcare provider. The POLST form helps ensure that a patient's wishes regarding life-sustaining treatments are honored by emergency medical personnel, nursing home staff, and healthcare providers. All of these concepts share a common goal: to ensure the best possible quality of life for patients facing serious illnesses, while respecting their values, preferences, and goals for care. New York Times Best Selling author of “Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated,” Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series "Little House on the Prairie," and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television and stage appearances. Her one woman show “Confessions of a Prairie Bitch”, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Alison performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all French version titled: “Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie”. In 1986 when her friend and "Little House husband" co-star, Steve Tracy, passed away due to complications of HIV/AIDS, Alison began volunteering at AIDS Project Los Angeles. Her duties ranged from working on the Southern California AIDS Hotline and the APLA food bank, to chairing the steering committee of the volunteer speakers bureau and developing “Safer Sex” workshops. She has provided AIDS education to doctors, nurses, prison inmates, service clubs, churches, department stores and schools, written AIDS education articles for the magazines "Frontiers" and "Designers West” and spent seven years hosting the APLA educational cable television show, "AIDS Vision." In 1992, Joel Wachs presented Alison with a resolution by the Los Angeles City Council commending her on her work on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. From 1989 through 1993 she served as Program Manager at Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. From 1989 through 2003 she served as both hostess and producer for the comedy stage at the AIDS Project Los Angeles Annual Summer Party, where she helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for people living with HIV. She currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children (www.PROTECT.org), fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse. As an activist for the improvement of child protection laws, she has spoken before the California Senate and worked on legislative and political campaigns in several states, including Virginia and New York, in addition to PROTECT's work on federal legislation in Washington, D.C. She has appeared on numerous television news programs discussing the legal and political issues surrounding child abuse and molestation. She came forward to tell the world about the sexual abuse she suffered in her own life, during her 2004 interview on Larry King Live. She continues to be interviewed on this and other topics on Nancy Grace, CNN's Showbiz Tonight, The Insider, Court TV, and Bill O'Reilly's The Factor. She takes pride in the fact that so many people enjoyed hating her as a girl and is more than happy to give them the opportunity to do so in the future. "My fans have proudly taken on the name "Bonnetheads" to designate their love of all things Prairie and many have posted pictures themselves wearing bonnets while they read along at home," remarks Alison.
