In our second film review for Season 4, we take a look at Outstanding Production nominee East Lynne, based on Ellen Wood's best-selling 1861 novel. This is nearly a lost film, since the single copy in existence is only available for viewing via appointment at UCLA. We had to resort to watching a low-quality pirated version on YouTube. The Channings by Ellen Wood audiobook. This is a saga about life in a small town in England during the Victorian era. The "stars" of this saga are the Channings. Mr. Channing was ill and, because of his poverty, his six children have to work. Many things happen during this saga: a man confesses to a theft which he thinks his brother did, a lady is engaged to a gentleman much above her station, and so much more. But in the middle of all this you can find plenty of family love.
Rachel Atkins is a lively narrator for Ellen Wood's 1861 melodrama. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile contributor Sandi Henschel discuss how Atkins handles the characters, plots, and subplots with aplomb. Lady Isabel Carlyle leaves her husband and children for a cad, and when she's abandoned by her lover, returns in disguise as governess to her own children. Atkins juggles the love affairs, secrets, false identities and more and keeps the story fun for listeners. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Naxos AudioBooks. This lecture will look at the role of women writers in the boom in sensation fiction in the nineteenth century and the ways in which novelists like Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Ellen Wood both participated in a burgeoning literary marketplace and in debates about the commodification of literature. The talk will also look at some of the ways in which the women’s sensation novel explored the ethics of materialism and consumption.
Ellen Wood is my first amazing guest. At 74, she's on a mission to show people how to grow younger, and she is living proof that it's possible! In 2004, Wood began a daily program of practices she created with the goal of growing younger, and it worked. She's regained the energy she enjoyed 30 years ago; has a clearer, sharper mind and stronger body. This success in reversing the aging pattern lead Wood to share her techniques for growing younger. She's appeared on national and local TV and radio. In her first book, The Secret Method for Growing Younger, Wood describes processes to uncover and replace unconscious beliefs that block the possibility of growing younger. Wood's book has been endorsed by notable physicians including David Simon MD, Larry Dossey MD, and C. Norman Shealy MD, PhD. My second guest is Dr. Anthony V, Benedetto, who completed his internship, residency and surgical training at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He returned to Philadelphia to begin his practice in dermatologic surgery. He was the first physician in Pennsylvania to practice Mohs surgery for skin cancer. Dr. Benedetto is the founder and medical director of the Dermatologic SurgiCenter in Philadelphia, PA and in Drexel Hill, PA, where he practices Mohs Surgery and Cosmetic and Procedural Dermatologic Surgery. He's also the director of fellowship training in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. He's currently Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Benedetto was named 'Dermatologist of the Year' (2009). He's authored and co-authored 65 articles in peer review journals and textbook chapters.
