What if the problem isn't your schedule but your energy? In this episode of Dominate Your Day, I challenge the traditional focus on time management. Many leaders spend their days optimizing calendars and workflows, yet still end up drained. Why? Because time is neutral it's alignment that determines whether an activity energizes or depletes you. When your work taps into your strengths, values, and mission, it creates energy. When it doesn't, even a short task can leave you exhausted. The key to managing energy is emotional recognition your ability to read how different activities impact you in real time. Treat your emotions as performance data, using them to identify what fuels or drains you. Listen in to learn simple practices to help you shift from operating on empty to leading with sustainable energy. Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Time management won't fix burnout alignment will. It's not about how long you spend on tasks, but whether those tasks align with your strengths, values, and mission. 2. Your emotions are your most accurate energy data. Paying attention to what energizes or drains you provides real-time insight into how to adjust your leadership for better performance. 3. Sustainable leadership requires intentional energy design. Simple actions like tracking energy patterns, protecting your peak hours, and building in recovery help you lead with consistency, clarity, and endurance. In this episode of Dominate Your Day, I share five hidden "mission killers" that quietly derail even the most purpose-driven leaders. The issue isn't a lack of care it's subtle patterns like poor routines, decision fatigue, weak boundaries, people-pleasing, and competing priorities. These habits pull leaders into reactive mode and away from their true direction. The key? Awareness and small, intentional shifts. By identifying your biggest mission killer and taking one action to counter it, you begin reclaiming focus, energy, and alignment with what truly matters. Top 3 Takeaways: Mission failure often comes from hidden habits, not lack of intention. Clear routines, boundaries, and priorities protect your mission. Small, consistent actions can realign you with your true direction. On this episode of Dominate Your Day, I had the privilege of speaking with Jenn Greenhut, whose life took a profound turn after being diagnosed with stage four cancer. Before that moment, she had spent years striving for perfection, often tying her worth to achievement. Initially, her diagnosis felt like punishment, but everything shifted when she chose to see it differently. Instead of fighting her illness with fear and a fighting mentality, Jenn embraced gratitude, self-love, and even compassion for her own cancer cells. As she entered treatment, that mindset transformation became the foundation of her healing, and just four months later, she was cancer-free. Since then, Jenn has channeled her experience into purpose-driven work. She started a tote company, Love, Zero Negative, then created a foundation, the Zero Negative Foundation, to support cancer patients during treatment. Through our work together uncovering her Authentic Imprint™, she discovered that Empathy and Connectedness were key strengths fueling her mission, alongside core values like love, generosity, and growth. Jenn's journey is a powerful reminder that when we lead with love, especially toward ourselves, we can transform even the most difficult chapters into something deeply meaningful. Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Mindset can transform even the hardest moments. Jenn shifted from seeing cancer as a punishment to viewing it as a gift unlocking gratitude, self-love, and a new way of living. 2. Your greatest strengths may already be within you. By embracing her strengths of Empathy and Connectedness, Jenn aligned her natural gifts with her mission to help others heal and feel less alone. 3. You can rewrite your story at any time. No matter the challenge, choosing meaning over fear allows you to grow, find purpose, and become the hero of your own life. In this episode of Dominate Your Day, I share about the Hula Hoop Principle a simple but transformative way to rethink leadership and personal responsibility. Introduced to me by my therapist many years ago, this principle has completely shifted my perspective. I've noticed that leaders exhaust themselves trying to control others while neglecting the one thing they fully own themselves. The "hula hoop" represents everything within your control (your thoughts, actions, and growth), while everything outside it simply isn't yours to carry. Clarity of personal mission is the antidote to burnout and reactivity. Especially in a rapidly changing world shaped by AI and shifting career paths, your mission acts as an internal compass guiding decisions, protecting your energy, and helping you lead with intention instead of reaction. Real leadership starts within. When you focus on changing yourself first, everything else begins to shift. Top 3 Takeaways: You only have control over what's "inside your hula hoop" stop spending energy on what isn't yours. A clear personal mission acts as your GPS in uncertain, fast-changing environments. Lasting impact begins with internal change, not external control. On this episode of Dominate Your Day, Ellen Wood, CEO of VCFO, talks about what it means to be a trailblazer. Nearly 30 years ago, Ellen pioneered the fractional CFO model long before "virtual" became part of everyday business language. What started as a bold, unconventional idea has now served more than 6,000 clients and helped define an entire industry. We discuss culture, accountability, and leadership. Over the years, Ellen has learned that culture isn't a "soft" concept it's the heart of the business. By involving employees in defining core values and ultimately elevating "people first" to the top priority, she has intentionally shaped an organization rooted in integrity and service. Her perspective reinforces the truth that authentic leadership is about walking the talk building strong systems, empowering people, and staying true to your values while you grow. Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Great leadership starts with culture. Ellen reminds us that intentionally defining values and truly putting people first creates the foundation for long-term success. 2. Strong leaders build accountability into their organizations. They do this by clearly defining roles, setting expectations, and ensuring that ownership sits with one person, not many. 3. Leadership is about walking the talk. Leaders should model integrity, give back to the community, mentor the next generation, and continuously grow so your team can grow alongside you. Episode Minutes: Minute 5:00 - Building a strong organizational culture and defining core values Minute 9:00 - Industry trends: consolidation and the future vision for VCFO Minute 12:00 - Leadership influences and mentoring practices Minute 16:00 - The significance of accountability and systems like EOS Links + Resources from This Episode: Connect with Ellen on LinkedIn Learn more about vcfo Take the free 3-minute Authentic Imprint™ Assessment Get a copy of Dana's book, The Internal Revolution: Lead Authentically and Build Your Personal Brand from Within Learn more about The Strengths Journal
On this episode of Dominate Your Day, I had the privilege of sitting down with Sharon Eubank to talk about her new book, Doing Small Things with Great Love, and the powerful lessons she's learned from nearly three decades of global humanitarian work. Sharon emphasizes that real help is always an exchange grounded in respect, dignity, and listening rather than assuming we know what's best for others. We also discuss the leadership principles behind her work, especially the belief that we are most powerful where we live. Sharon explains how lasting change happens within trusted networks teams, neighborhoods, and organizations that hold one another accountable and unite around a shared purpose. She reflects on how service and purpose-driven teamwork can counter polarization and digital isolation, strengthen communities, and even improve mental health. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to make a positive impact within their community. Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Small acts matter more than we think. Real impact doesn't have to be big or global it's about giving the right help at the right time in the right way. Even simple acts, done with empathy, can restore dignity and humanity. 2. We are most powerful where we live. Lasting change happens in our own communities, where we understand the culture, speak the language, and have long-term relationships. Don't underestimate the influence you have right where you are. 3. Great leadership empowers, it doesn't dictate. Instead of solving problems for people, strong leaders help others build confidence to find their own solutions creating purpose-driven, trusted teams that make meaningful impact together. Episode Minutes: Minute 10:00 - Prioritizing where you are most powerful - your community Minute 11:00 - The importance of trusting and empowering those around you in leadership Minute 13:00 - Lessons from humanitarian work applicable to purpose-driven teams Minute 16:00 - Reflections on human nature, polarization, and community connection Links + Resources from This Episode: Get a copy of Sharon's book, Doing Small Things with Great Love Take the free 3-minute Authentic Imprint™ Assessment Get a copy of Dana's book, The Internal Revolution: Lead Authentically and Build Your Personal Brand from Within Learn more about The Strengths Journal
In this episode of the Dominate Your Day podcast, I speak with speaker, identity strategist, and co-founder and CEO of Build-A-Biz Kids, Leah Coss, to explore how early identity formation shapes the trajectory of our lives. Leah shares her personal journey from growing up in a chaotic and unsafe environment, to making destructive choices as a teenager, to experiencing a pivotal moment of self-awareness that changed everything. We also discuss the powerful mission behind her nonprofit organization, Build-A-Biz Kids. While the programs teach business, public speaking, and digital literacy to kids, the real impact lies in experiential learning that develops confidence, decision-making, resilience, and self-awareness. Leah explains why soft skills not technical skills are now the most critical for the next generation, and how giving kids real responsibility and ownership allows them to see feedback as data rather than rejection. By partnering with schools, libraries, and nonprofits, Build-A-Biz Kids is scaling this impact in a sustainable way reaching kids early, before the world defines who they are for them. Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Identity drives behavior. When kids (and adults) see themselves as capable, their decisions and outcomes change. 2. Confidence is built through experience, not instruction. Real ownership and real-world feedback create lasting growth. 3. Soft skills are future-proof skills. Resilience, decision-making, communication, and self-awareness are essential for both mental health and career success. In this episode of Dominate Your Day, I speak with Dr. Camille Preston, business psychologist and owner of Aim Leadership, about navigating grief, mental health, and authentic leadership. We unpack the concept of "telescoping grief" how personal and collective loss can merge and become overwhelming and the importance of sitting with those emotions rather than pushing them aside. We discuss the rising mental health challenges many face today and how small mindset shifts and genuine connection can bring healing. Her new book, Living Real, encourages embracing life's full emotional range and creating community through real conversations. Camille's focus on managing energy by aligning with strengths rather than forcing performance is a powerful leadership lesson. Her insights remind us that true resilience comes from understanding ourselves deeply and leaning into connection. Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Living real means feeling the full range of life. Avoiding discomfort leads to burnout and disconnection. Growth and fulfillment come from allowing both the highs and the lows of life. 2. Unprocessed grief compounds over time. When grief is ignored or pushed down, it resurfaces in bigger, messier ways. Healing begins by acknowledging and holding it instead of avoiding it. 3. Lead by sourcing, not forcing. Sustainable leadership comes from knowing your strengths, managing your energy, and making small shifts that let your best self emerge naturally. "Change me first." Those three simple words changed everything for me. As we kick off Season 5 of the Dominate Your Day podcast, I want to share my own story. I had outward success—a respected career, titles, and accomplishments that looked great on paper—but felt empty on the inside. People-pleasing, fixing, and performing leadership left me exhausted and disconnected from who I really was. In this episode, you'll hear how learning to focus on what I could actually control sparked an internal revolution, restored my marriage, reshaped my leadership, and led to the creation of the Authentic Imprint™ formula. I also share what's ahead for the podcast as we enter our fifth year and why this next season will go deeper into real-life transformation stories. Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Change starts with me. Lasting transformation doesn't come from fixing others or circumstances it begins when I take responsibility for what's happening inside me. 2. Emotional recognition is the multiplier. Strengths, values, and mission only work when paired with emotional recognition the ability to notice and name what's happening inside you before it drives your behavior. 3. You don't need to be more productive you need to be more you. Alignment, not achievement, is the key to sustainable leadership. When you lead from the inside out, transformation ripples through your life, your relationships, and your organization. In this episode of Dominate Your Day, I explore the crucial theme of organizational culture with my guest Dan Bredesen, author of 'The Seeds of Culture.' Dan talks about his unique journey from a Wisconsin farm to leading sales teams at a Fortune 500 company and how his diverse experiences shaped his understanding of culture in the corporate world. We discuss Dan's concept of 'culture farming,' where, akin to nurturing crops, a culture should be grown organically within an organization rather than forcibly built. He introduces the 'seven seeds of culture,' including effective communication, ethics, psychological safety, diversity, equity, inclusion, generosity, autonomy, and mutual accountability. Dan argues that these elements are essential for creating an environment where culture thrives, driving organizational performance and commitment. The episode also highlights the importance of patience, understanding culture as an ongoing process, and how leaders can foster a supportive, inclusive, and high-performing workplace.
