According to myths around the world, the devil is always looking for more souls…this practice isn't anywhere in the bible, but there are plenty of accounts in other religions, literature, and art. For example, Dante's “ The Divine Comedy, “ written in the 14th century, riffs on this concept. Other stories involve the devil and demons seeking humans to give up their souls in exchange for riches, favours, or the bestowment of special powers. These are the so-called “deals with the devil.” The best-known ancient example is the story of Faust, a German legend dating to the 16th century... a depressed and bored scholar attempts suicide... when that fails, he calls upon the devil to make things better. “Give me magic powers, knowledge, and a chance to indulge in all the pleasures of this world!”… The devil—known as Mephistopheles in this story—says, “Sure!... You can have all you want for a few years…but when time is up, you will give me your soul, and you will be my slave forever.” Faust says, “deal!”…and for a while, he gets everything he wants, including lots of sex…things inevitably turn out bad for him, and per his contract, he is carried off to hell—maybe…there are other versions of the story where he gains redemption and gets to keep his soul. So how does one make an appointment with the devil to sell their soul?...mostly, you meet him at a crossroads at midnight, discuss terms, and sign the contract. Over the centuries, sea captains, generals, and painters are said to have sold their souls in exchange for worldly things…and so have a number of musicians…the most famous of these stories is connected to blues musician Robert Johnson…it is said he made a deal with the devil and was bestowed with an almost supernatural ability to play the guitar. Robert Johnson eventually died at the age of 27…but what really happened?...was he murdered?...or did his contract expire? I'm Alan Cross, and this is episode 30 of “Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry”…let's take a trip to the crossroads to see whom we find there…and here's a hint: more than just Robert Johnson will be there. Welcome to Day 2399 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2399 – Marching Orders for Soldiers of the Cross – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 06/09/2024 Our Strange Life – Marching Orders for Soldiers of the Cross. 1 Peter 4:7-11 Last week, our focus was on the attitude that we, as Christ's Followers, should have and on the possibility that our lives may shock the unbelieving crowd. Today, Peter gives us Marching Orders for Soldiers of the Cross. Today's passage is 1 Peter 4:7-11, on page 1891 of your Pew Bibles. I will read it from the NIV and the NLT today to give us a better perspective of this passage. 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 7 The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. 8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. 10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. The name “Peter" and the adjective “practical" go hand in hand. Being married helped. So did his career as a fisherman. Before following Christ, Peter was a man of action, which is evident throughout Christ's ministry. Peter's life consisted of tangible, practical things: boats, nets, fish, sweat, hard work, family—the nitty-gritty of real life. We shouldn't be surprised to discover his rugged personality and to-the-point style flow through his writing. Being neither scholarly nor sophisticated, Peter had little interest in theoretical discussions. Truth was meant to be lived, not simply talked about and then ignored. The way he figured, if there is a cause worth fighting for, fight—don't philosophize! The man rolled up his sleeves and dug in if urgency required action. When Peter began to dictate this letter to suffering saints, he didn't beat around the fig tree; he got down to basics. Urgency led to simplicity. Amid his discussion of facing suffering with hope in Christ, Peter can't avoid the practical effects of living in light of Christ's return. He doesn't get bogged down speculating about the hows, whens, and wheres of the end times; he focuses instead on the question, “So what?" He answers this bottom-line...
Welcome to Day 2394 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2394 – How to Shock an Unbelieving Crowd 4:1-6 – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 06/02/2024 Our Strange Life – How to Shock an Unbelieving Crowd. 1 Peter 4:1-6 Last week, we explored the importance of being a faithful Christ Follower and the necessity of public baptism for Focusing Fully on Jesus Christ. Today, we focus on the attitude that we, as Christ's Followers, should have and on the possibility that our lives may shock the unbelieving crowd. Today's passage is 1 Peter 4:1-6, on page 1890 of your Pew Bibles. 1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4 They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. Throughout the New Testament, we read of the changed life that follows genuine conversion. When God freely and fully forgives the sins of our former life|when the righteousness of Christ is credited to our account |and the Spirit of God takes up residence in our hearts|then the old things pass away, and all things become new (2 Cor. 5:17). This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! The lifelong process of transformation begins. This radical series of changes alters our attitudes, inner motives, habits, and pursuits, as well as our choice of close friends. As far back as the first century, Peter wrote of all these things. Though almost two thousand years separate us from Peter's original audience, there isn't a Christian today who can't identify with the apostle's words. Written for a particular time, they are nevertheless timeless. They speak with incredible relevance today, especially his comments regarding the reaction of those who don't know the Lord. In this section, Peter reminds us that because our citizenship is in heaven, the current world isn't our true home in its current form until Jesus transforms it into a Global Eden upon his return. We're representatives, yes, Ambassadors of a different kingdom. And like foreign tourists visiting another country, we may be the only way people get a picture of what God's kingdom is like. As a result, unbelievers today will either be attracted or repelled by our heavenly home. -4:1-3- With the logical conjunction “therefore," Peter is saying in shorthand, “Now, in light of everything I have just written about Christ, I'm going to present you with some practical conclusions.” In the previous...

Welcome to Day 2389 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2389 – OUR STRANGE LIFE – FOCUSING FULLY ON JESUS CHRIST 1 PETER 3:8-17 – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 05/26/2024 Our Strange Life – Focusing Fully on Jesus Christ 1 Peter 3:18-22 Last week, we moved forward with our overall submission theme as we learned how to have A Righteous Life and a Ready Defense utilizing the nine maturity checkpoints of our Christian faith. Today, we switch the focus of why we,| as Christ Followers,| may suffer for our faith to the One who suffered all for us in a message titled, Focusing Fully on Jesus Christ. Today's passage is 1 Peter 3:18-22, on page 1890 of your Pew Bibles. 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive,[d] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God.[e] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. This passage of 1 Peter 3:18-22 is one of the most challenging passages to translate and interpret. Let's look at this passage, focusing on its context to help us better grasp its content. — 3:18 — This section begins in the middle of a paragraph, a larger unit of Peter's thought and argument. In the previous section, Peter referred to the believer's appropriate response to unjust suffering (3:14-17). Believers who conduct their lives virtuously (3:8-12) sometimes incur unfair treatment as a result (3:14). Peter makes his point clear in 3:17: Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong! At this point in the paragraph, Peter turns our attention to Christ, who exemplified unjust punishment. In 3:18-22, Christ alone is the focus of our attention. Peter outlines in summary fashion the significant movements of Christ from His suffering and death on our behalf (3:18) to His resurrection and exaltation to the right hand of God (3:21-22). Sandwiched between the familiar recounting of Christ's death and resurrection, we find a few brief statements about what Christ did amid His descent (3:19-20) and how we publicly associate ourselves with Christ's death and resurrection...
Welcome to Day 2384 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2384 – OUR STRANGE LIFE – A RIGHTEOUS LIFE AND A READY DEFENSE1 PETER 3:8-17 – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 05/19/2024 Our Strange Life – A Righteous Life and a Ready Defense 1 Peter 3:8-17 Last week, we shifted from submitting to government authorities and employers to how we should practice mutual submission in our home in a message titled, The Give-and-Take of Domestic Harmony. This week, we move forward with our overall submission theme as we learn how to have A Righteous Life and a Ready Defense. Today's passage is 1 Peter 3:8-17, on page 1890 of your Pew Bibles. I will read it today from the NLT because the text flow is more personally applicable to our daily lives. 8 Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters.[a] Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. 9 Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing. 10 For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. 11 Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. 12 The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.”[b] 13 Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don't worry or be afraid of their threats. 15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way.[c] Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. 17 Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong! Without a doubt, the process of spiritual growth is long and often painful. In route to maturity, we all spill our milk, say things we shouldn't, and fail to act our age. Sometimes, we throw temper tantrums like toddlers, pout like preschoolers, or argue and complain like teens. We should conduct ourselves as mature believers and set an example for those younger in the faith. We may know what is right, but we don't have the will to do what's

Welcome to Day 2379 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2379 – OUR STRANGE LIFE – THE GIVE AND TAKE OF DOMESTIC HARMONY 1 PETER 3:1-7 – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 05/12/2024 Our Strange Life – The Give and Take of Domestic Harmony 1 Peter 3:1-7 Last week, we realized that as Christ followers, we will not only be the recipients of unjust treatment at times but that there are benefits in bearing the brunt of that treatment in a message titled, Pressing on Even Though Ripped Off. This week, we are shifting from submitting to government authorities and employers to how we should practice mutual submission in our home in a message titled, The Give-and-Take of Domestic Harmony. I know some of you no longer have a spouse, so this message may not be directly applicable, but use Peter's lessons to help friends and family that may need your advice. Today's passage is 1 Peter 3:1-7, on page 1889 of your Pew Bibles. I will read it today from the NLT because it focuses more clearly on keywords. 1 In the same way, your wives must accept your husbands' authority. Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over 2 by observing your pure and reverent lives. 3 Don't be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. 4 You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. 5 This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They put their trust in God and accepted the authority of their husbands. 6 For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him her master. You are her daughters when you do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do. 7 In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God's gift of new life. Treat her as you should| so your prayers will not be hindered. Just like it is impossible to drive a car with two steering wheels and each spouse trying to wrestle control from the other, a better analogy for a healthy marriage is that of a row boat, where both must paddle in harmony to make any progress. Having been married to Paula for forty-five years this August, I've become a realist about marriage— not an idealist. While overall, our marriage has been rock-solid and, yes, even pleasant, there have been years of learning and growth, which includes difficulty, delight, discovery, heartaches, disappointments, hurtful times, and ecstatic moments together. These experiences have made our marriage stronger. The apostle Peter, too, spoke about marriage, but not from some remote prophet's cave or in a scholar's ivory tower.| No, Peter was married. His wife accompanied him on many of his travels (1 Cor. 9:5). They were co-workers in the Kingdom of God. Peter knew firsthand the struggles all married couples endure. Like a diamond in a platinum...

Sermon from February 19, 2023 | When we hear the commands of Scripture, our first instinct is to ask, “How can I do more?” But what if we're starting in the wrong place? Everything about who we are is rooted in identity; who do we believe we are? From this place, we can become the type of people whose lives are compellingly strange; who are markedly distinct, because we are not defined by what we do, but by whose we are. Shrouded by time, the Union Association has gone almost ignored by baseball historians in recent years, dismissed as an inferior league that doesn't belong in the same ballpark as the American, National, or even the Federal Leagues. But, as special guest Justin McKinney shows in his new book, Baseballl's Union Association: The Short, Strange Life of a 19th Century Major League, that doesn't matter as much as what the league and the men who made it up can teach us about the game's early history and the lengths the National League and American Association would go to make sure they were the only games in town. Plus, happy birthday to Cecil Cooper and Zoilo Versalles!
Kristallnacht was the violent uprising against German Jews in November 1938 that was the opening to the eventual genocide of six million Europeans Jews—and then millions of others—during World War II. Maryam Henein joins us to discuss her investigation into the psyop known as the death of George Floyd & to give us an update on her Charles Lieber investigation.
It's the early morning of June the 26th, 1718 and in the basement of the Peter and Paul Fortress in St Petersburg, Russia, lies a young man. His face is covered in bruises, his back is bleeding, and his eyes are sunken holes in their sockets, wreathed in black. The door is flung open, and another man strides into the prison chamber. In his hand is a hard leather whip about three and a half feet long, ending in a beak-like hook. He walks over to the prisoner, who closes his eyes and quietly sobs. He knows what's coming. The prisoner is Tsarevich Alexei, heir to the Russian throne. His torturer is his own father, Tsar Peter the Great. Peter the Great was one of the most bloody and brutal rulers in Russian history. Known for leading his own torture interrogations, and using forced labour to construct his architectural visions, his son is only one of thousands of people who will suffer at his hands during his reign. Yet he is remembered as one of Russia's greatest ever rulers. Creating a navy, a city, and being one of the first Tsars to travel Europe in 100 years, his love of science and learning saw him transform his antiquated realm into a European power of the modern age. But given the high price paid by his people, his predisposition for violence, and how the future of his reign was cemented by torture, can he truly be seen as Peter ‘the Great' today? Society for American Baseball Research historian/chronicler Justin Mckinney (Baseball's Union Association: The Short, Strange Life of a 19th-Century Major League) joins the podcast this week to weigh in on the debate that continues to swirl around baseball's curious one-season Union Association - namely, was it a truly major league? As first broached in our Episode 73 with Jon Springer, the National League was less than a decade old back in 1884, and the rival American Association, which had been established two years earlier, was nipping at its heels. "Organized Baseball" had just been formed to help codify the still-gestating professional version of the game. But when a maverick millionaire and spurned team-owner aspirant named Henry Lucas established a new third major league that year - the Union Association - the pro game erupted into chaos. Come for the pennant-winning St. Louis Maroons (who won 94 of their 113 regular season games, and bested the second-place Cincinnati Outlaw Reds by a whopping 21 games), but stay for the litany of replacement teams (e.g., Wilmington Quicksteps, St. Paul Saints, Altoona Mountain Citys, Kansas City Cowboys, etc.) that folded just as soon as they arrived.

For Constant Constance's 20th episode, Andrew speaks with James Gavin. James is an author who has been writing for eighteen years now; he is currently finishing a biography of George Michael which is due to be published next Spring 2022 (pub. Abrams Books). As Sheila Weller writes of James, "there is no one who writes as eloquently, knowledgeably, and page-turningly about the midcentury music heroes who sang - and lived - our American story." In this expansive conversation, Andrew speaks with James about the history and stories behind his five previously published books, “Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne;” “Deep in a Dream : The Long Night of Chet Baker,” “Is That All There Is? : The Strange Life of Peggy Lee,” and “Intimate Nights: The Golden Age of New York Cabaret,” and so much more, (including a discussion about a little-known story behind the saxophone solo on George Michael's song ‘Careless Whisper'.) If you're interested in any of these musical greats, history, or anything really, this is an episode for you. This episode of Constant Constance is a long one, as James reads from his biography of singer Lena Horne called, “Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/andrew-norman-dangelo/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/andrew-norman-dangelo/support
