Although this started as a conversation about Gwangju and Professor Don Baker's experiences there starting in 1971, including witnessing the aftermath of the massacre in 1980, we quickly understood there was much more for us to explore. This includes Don's impressions of Kim Dae-jung, gender and women in the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's historical relationship with China, Confucianism and ancestor worship, the effects of Japanese colonization, and the field of Korean Studies more broadly. It was completely spontaneous, but I also noted the following people and their work referenced throughout this conversation, demonstrating the depth and breadth of Don's knowledge: Alexis Dudden, Dave C Kang, Alexander Woodside, Jisoo Kim, Hyaeweol Choi, Carter Eckert, Andre Schmid, Jahyun Kim Haboush, Gregory Henderson, Robert Carlin, Eugene Park, Michael Seth, John Jorgensen, Kim Sun Joo, BR Myers, Bruce Cumings, James Palais, Mark Peterson, John Duncan, Steve Shields, and David Dolinger. Despite knowing the tragedy and violence taking place in Gwangju, Don snuck into the city to find his friends and understand what was really happening. His descriptions of the attacks and murder that took place in Gwangju are heartbreaking to listen to. And through all of this, he nevertheless finishes with words of hope and positivity. You have all the innovators and you have all the resources from Walmart and all the other companies. That culture made it a no-brainer to build [Basis Health] here…There's a lot of other places in the world I could probably be, but Bentonville is the only place where I can walk down the street and go fishing in the morning and meet billion dollars of investment money in the afternoon.” - Andres Lazarte, (3:52)“I'll lead in with talking about how incredible Northwest Arkansas is. It's really all become one community with different sub-sectors and cultures within that. Rogers, Bella Vista, Bentonville and Fayetteville are all very different from each other but are very much one big economic powerhouse.” - Aaron Ivy, (11:52)“What I've been seeing is that a lot of executives and enterprises we have relationships with have moved to [Bentonville] over two to five years ago. It's been amazing. So the conversation I have with them is that you come here and you never expect that what you see here is far beyond what you expected before coming here.” - Amir Hoss, (19:45)“What I've really enjoyed at this tech summit is the presence and support that emerging technology companies are receiving from Fortune 500 companies and the recognition from huge corporate partners. I find that inspiring and extremely relieving.” - Liam La Fargue, (34:11)“I love all the family things that are going on…I love the fact there are wonderful bike trails and restaurants. Everything here has grown so fast, but it feels like very thoughtful growth and growth that's been designed for families. That's what keeps us here.” - Eugene Park, (42:46)

There have been times when Korea has lived in periods of prolonged stability and tranquillity. But there have also been times, such as now, when it seems to have an outsized influence on global affairs – as is certainly the case of North Korea the influence of which is far bigger than its GDP figures would suggest it might have. With is nuclear capability and ruthless authoritarianism, North Korea has engaged Beijing and Washington as the highest level. And the economic miracle in the south as well as the democratic development there have generated their own waves in global politics. We realize it's been since April that we did our last Substantive Cinema (a great show with Tyler Huckabee that you should all listen to and share with others if you haven't yet!), the perils of pivoting release schedules but we're back on track with an excellent one! Jordan Peele's 2017 directorial debut Get Out was a smash commercial and critical success (and we had Eugene Park on to discuss that back on Ep #62, link is below). Anticipation and expectations were high for his follow up two years later, and though his next effort, Us, released to very mixed reactions, there's an abundance of substance there and we had a great time revisiting it as we look forward to his next movie, Nope, releasing this coming weekend! Give it a listen and send us an email or a voicemail and let us know what you thought of the film and our takeaways. And let us know if there's someone you think we should reach out to for inevitable SC episode on Nope! The first Matrix movie was released in March of 1999 and was an instant sensation. Movies, and in many ways our culture at large, would be forever changed. Two weeks ago, 18 years after the last Matrix film we had, the fourth installment, The Matrix Resurrections, premiered theatrically and on HBO Max. Returning guest, Eugene Park, joins us as we dive back down the rabbit hole! Reactions from both fans and critics has been split on this film (much like the second and third films in the series), but we think that there's a lot here to be explored: Why does this film exist? Did Warner Brothers demand it or was there an artistic vision from the original creator? Why do some seem to hate this so much? What does it have to say about the creative difficulties & shortcomings of a culture obsessed with more? Have the original films had more of a positive or negative legacy since they've come out and how does that affect the folks involved in creating it? Why do the action scenes feel a bit different in this one? We cover these and other topics, while still leaving plenty of things on the table! In 2017 when Jordan Peele released Get Out it was an instant hit. Critics loved it, audiences loved it, and it made more than fifty times its budget at the box office. What was it about the film that resonated with so many people and led to Jordan Peele's historic Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay? The film deals on a visceral level with the ugliness of racism in America, causes viewers to ask some necessary questions, and gives us the narrative vocabulary to describe things that we experience and observe on a regular basis. Joining us on this episode is Eugene Park.
