Dr. Daniel Hale Williams is often described as the first person to successfully perform an open-heart surgery. https://www.patreon.com/ColonialOutcasts As the genocide in Gaza rages on, the specter of a large scale regional kinetic conflict with millions of lives at stake looms over our heads and Israel beats the drums of war with Washington dancing to it, a question is starting to surface in many our conversations: are we entering WWIII? This is the prologue for our multipart series on revolution with history professor, Dr. Butch Ware. Follow Professor Butch Ware on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/butchware/ We've had plenty of episodes on the military dynamics and postering in this region, the dangerous nature of Israel's provocations poised to drag the United States into an all out war with Iran, Hezbollah, and Yemen that could lead us into a world war with China and Russia, but in this episode we propose an alternative possibility: WWIII gets canceled due to a scheduling conflict with a world wide revolution. We discuss the tangibility of revolution, why they fail, why they succeed, how it can be done right, why the Black Panthers are so important to the topic, how Islam plays an important part of global revolution, and most importantly: why we should be prioritizing Indigenous histories and social organization as a political direction as opposed to forms of governments birthed from white supremacy. We aim for this series to serve as a toolkit for potential leaders to use in forming their own ideas on getting this revolution popped off like a smoke grenade. #icj #antiimperialism #decolonize #ceasefire #uspolitics #israelhamaswar #globalaffairs #foreignaffairs #humanrights #breakingnews #internationalnews #warzoneclips #veteran #politicalnews #palestina #politics #political #internationalrelations #internationallaw #colonialoutcasts #counterterrorism #globalsecurity #iran #globalsecurity #ww3 #worldwar3 #middleeast #trump #internationalnews #warzoneclips #veteran #politicalnews #palestina #politics #political #internationalrelations #internationallaw #colonialoutcasts #counterterrorism #globalsecurity

On this day in 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams made history as a pioneering open-heart surgeon. Williams began his medical journey as an apprentice under the esteemed surgeon Dr. Henry Palmer, which paved the way for his admission to the prestigious Chicago Medical School at Northwestern University. After earning his M.D. in 1883, Williams became one of the few Black physicians in Chicago. Motivated by the plight of a Black woman who was denied entry to nursing school due to her race, Williams co-founded the Provident Hospital and Nursing Training School. On July 9, 1893, he performed the first open-heart surgery, demonstrating his exceptional medical intuition and surgical prowess. That night, James Cornish arrived at Provident Hospital with a deep stab wound near his heart, setting the stage for Williams' groundbreaking achievement. Learn more about your ad choices. When Dr. Rita Roberts recounts tales from her grandfather, it's like unearthing lost treasures from the annals of history. In this heartfelt exchange, she narrates her evolution from a captivated child to a revered historian, enriching our understanding of African American experiences during the Civil War era. Her book, "I Can't Wait to Call You My Wife," not only showcases deeply moving letters but also serves as a vessel, transporting us across time to grasp the profound connections of love and family that withstood the test of adversity. Her voice adds texture to our conversation, as she unravels how historical documents aren't just artifacts but lifelines to voices long silenced.Imagine the act of reading - so often taken for granted - as a radical weapon against the chains of slavery. Dr. Roberts guides us through the shadows of America's past, illuminating the defiance and determination of African Americans who wielded literacy as their shield. We delve into the complexities of 'hired out' slavery, the half-hearted dance around abolition in Northern states, and the intense emotional landscape of those who were traded as commodities. Their relentless quest for dignity and the sustenance of family bonds form the crux of a gripping narrative that challenges us to see beyond the surface of historical facts.Emancipation brought new horizons for African Americans, yet the journey was riddled with trials of identity and respect. The episode reaches its crescendo as Dr. Roberts brings to life Jordan Anderson's dignified refusal to dismiss the wrongs of his enslavement. The conversation ventures deeper, exploring how faith intertwined with the yearning for liberty and how the personal writings of abolitionists revealed their intertwined struggles for racial and gender equality. Rounding off with an examination of racial ideology's lasting scars, this episode is a testament to Dr. Roberts' dedication to preserving the rich tapestry of African American history through the intimate medium of letters—a legacy of individual lives that collectively shape our understanding of a painful yet pivotal chapter in America's story.Support the show

The Hardest Ramadans in History • Dr. Omar Suleiman
Legendary music artists The Supremes and Harry Belafonte passed through there. It was a place of prestige and pride for Philadelphia's Black population. Such was the early legacy of the Nile Swim Club, which, in the late 1950s, opened in response to racial segregation in the borough of Yeadon. But with the passing of time, the club's allure began to change. Declines in enrollment became so sharp that Nile was ultimately forced to declare bankruptcy. In recent years, benefactors have emerged to save the club, and reset its role in the community it serves. West Chester University Professor of History Dr. Bob Kodosky, author of The Nile Swim Club of Yeadon: A History, shares stories about the club's past, and looks ahead to its future. Dr. Martin Luther King Park, located at 1702 Broadway St. in the city, has a very rich history in the community. When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was scheduled to hold a campaign rally in the inner city. As Kennedy received word that King had been shot, city officials and policy urged him to cancel his appearance. He refused.Kennedy arrived to a gathered crowd at 17th and Broadway, very close to where the memorial sits today, and addressed the crowd. Instead of a campaign speech, Kennedy delivered a passionate statement informing the crowd of King's death and urging racial reconciliation. His words were so moving that the crowd erupted in applause instead of anger. The heart of Kennedy's message is still on display in the park along with monuments (which include the Landmark for Peace sculpture) that serve as a reminder of King's fight for peace, justice, and unity.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week, Eric, Dan, and Dylan discuss the passing of Henry Kissinger at the age of 100. How should Kissinger be remembered? Is there any merit to the claims he was a war criminal? What will be his enduring legacy? Next, Venezuela might be preparing to annex some of the territory of neighboring Guyana after the discovery of large oil reserves in that nation. How concerned should we be? How much does this underscore the disaster that the socialist governments of Chávez and Maduro have been for Venezuela? And finally, the presidents of Harvard, MIT, and Penn appeared before Congress to testify on anti-Semitism on their campuses—and it didn't go very well. The Kentucky Historical Society was founded in 1836, but did you know that it soon lapsed? Join us today for a discussion with a KHS research fellow who has written an article examining the origins of the Kentucky Historical Society and who explains why it struggled to survive as an institution in the nineteenth century. Kentucky Chronicles is inspired by the work of researchers from across the world who have conducted research at the Kentucky Historical Society, or who have contributed to the scholarly journal, The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, which has been published continuously, since 1903. Hosted by Dr. Daniel J. Burge, associate editor of The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, and coordinator of our Research Fellows program, which brings in researchers from across the world to conduct research in the rich archival holdings of the Kentucky Historical Society. Although this started as a conversation about Gwangju and Professor Don Baker's experiences there starting in 1971, including witnessing the aftermath of the massacre in 1980, we quickly understood there was much more for us to explore. This includes Don's impressions of Kim Dae-jung, gender and women in the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's historical relationship with China, Confucianism and ancestor worship, the effects of Japanese colonization, and the field of Korean Studies more broadly. It was completely spontaneous, but I also noted the following people and their work referenced throughout this conversation, demonstrating the depth and breadth of Don's knowledge: Alexis Dudden, Dave C Kang, Alexander Woodside, Jisoo Kim, Hyaeweol Choi, Carter Eckert, Andre Schmid, Jahyun Kim Haboush, Gregory Henderson, Robert Carlin, Eugene Park, Michael Seth, John Jorgensen, Kim Sun Joo, BR Myers, Bruce Cumings, James Palais, Mark Peterson, John Duncan, Steve Shields, and David Dolinger. Despite knowing the tragedy and violence taking place in Gwangju, Don snuck into the city to find his friends and understand what was really happening. His descriptions of the attacks and murder that took place in Gwangju are heartbreaking to listen to. And through all of this, he nevertheless finishes with words of hope and positivity.
