It seems that many brands are moving in the right direction in terms of phasing PFAS out of their products, but one of the many aspects complicating this process is the potential for contamination. In this episode, we hear directly from leading outdoor industry brands like Keen, Outdoor Research, Fjallraven, and Houdini Sportswear alongside scientists and environmental epidemiologists about how and why PFAS spreads and contaminates products so easily. The goal of this series is to provide useful information for consumers regarding PFAS, specifically within the outdoor industry, but also for those of us working in the industry. I learned from every single person that I interviewed and talked to about the topic of PFAS, and one of the patterns I noticed during production was that most of the European brands like Jack Wolfskin, Fjallraven, and Houdini Sportswear were early adopters of phasing PFAS out of their products. As early as 2009, some of these brands had already begun or, at the very least, made the decision to remove harmful chemicals from their product line. This begs the question, what took the rest of the industry so long to catch up when there were several examples of success just across the ocean? Our guest on the latest episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast is Eva Karlsson, CEO of Houdini. If you aren't familiar with Houdini, it is a Swedish sportswear company that is one of the most forward thinking and environmentally responsible companies on the planet. And a lot of that is down to Eva's progressive leadership. In this episode we talk about Eva's connection to nature, how Scandinavian culture influences Houdini, and the design principles it uses to build its products. We also talk about how Houdini is focused on creating a relational, rather than transactional, business with its customers. Huge thanks to Eva for being on the podcast and make sure to check out the company's latest initiative, Houdini Circle.
For this eleventh Episode Fabian Nendza travelled to Stockholm with the Hew Horizons Podcast team to meet Eva Karlsson personally in the Houdini Head office. The CEO of Houdini Sportwear Eva Karlsson is pretty much understood as a true visionary. She thinks in systems and takes a broader perspective on sustainability. At the center of Houdini's philosophy is functional circularity: the collection is produced with the best available technology and circular services are offered to Houdini's clients to enhance their lifestyles. Houdini's actions are guided by a regular Planetary Boundary Assessment (Stockholm Resilience Center) to understand their own actions within a broader context and to make corresponding choices.

Eva Karlsson is the CEO of the outdoor brand Houdini; a company that embraces sustainability all the way, down to the very fiber. In this interview, you will hear the fascinating story of how a Houdini garment is almost completely biodegradable, and the holistic idea behind the clothes and the business model. Instead of using "sustainability", Houdini rather refers to regeneration; a systems-thinking approach with the goal to create more value for the planet and the society than it captures for itself. This interview is a must if you're interested in new ways of thinking that embrace both head and heart. Eva mentions the Half-Earth Project at the end of the interview. You can read more about this project here: https://www.half-earthproject.org/ This is the last episode of this season. Let's keep in touch at: www.carolinenordvall.com hej@carolinenordvall.com
Hur förbereder man bina? Eva Karlsson is one of the most versatile personalities I have met professionally. She stands for integrity with her personality and her way of working. Within the industry, Houdini is known for the special models they bring to the textile industry as an actually small player. Eva took over the company 20 years ago with her colleague Hannah - and now they are known as innovators, thought leaders and trailblazers not only in the textile industry. In our conversation, Eva shares the various milestones and paths that have proved to be trend-setting for them!
Eva Karlsson is the CEO of Houdini Sportswear, a brand pioneering the outdoor clothing space by making truly circular business. With rental services, subscription services and 100% of this season's fabrics being recycled, recyclable, biodegradable or bluesign certified, Houdini is on a mission to change the trajectory of the industry. The latest project, Mono Air, has seen the creation of a fleece jacket which can be recycled and enormously reduces microplastic shedding. The design principles behind this jacket have been shared openly online, a first in the industry. Peter sitter även i styrelsen för Protect Our Winters Sweden. This autumn I was asked to lead a short panel discussion on a Houdini Sportswear event following a preview of an ongoing project called ”Coextinction”.Coextinction is a project to document and protect the life of the Southern Resident Killer Whales off the coast of British Colombia. One of many threats to the Orcas is starvation. The panel consisted of the CEO of Houdini Sportswear, Eva Karlsson, the Vice President of Polartec Eric Yung, adventurer and photographer Oskar Kihlborg and the activist and producer of the Coextinction project: Gloria Pancrazi. What we saw on the event was just a short preview of the Coextinction documentary and we made promises not to post any pictures or video clips from it. But I need to tell you about one haunting scene that made a deep impression on me:One of the Orcas just gave birth to a calf - a much awaited and much needed addition to the pod of Southern Resident Killer Whales. But her calf dies after just a couple of days. The Orcas are a very intelligent and socially complex species - and it is not unheard of that when a mother looses her calf - she will carry it, gently pushing it in front of her for a short amount of time. This Orca carries her dead calf for 17 days. For more than 1 000 miles she gently pushes her dead calf in front of her.The scene is immensely heartbreaking. The discussion circled around the role of the activist, how to balance the scale of hope and despair and what we can do to change and how to get involved in the Coextinction project. But I need to tell you about one haunting scene that made a deep impression on me:One of the Orcas just gave birth to a calf – a much awaited and much needed addition to the pod of Southern Resident Killer Whales. But her calf dies after just a couple of days. The Orcas are a very intelligent and socially complex species – and it is not unheard of that when a mother looses her calf – she will carry it, gently pushing it in front of her for a short amount of time. This Orca carries her dead calf for 17 days. For more than 1 000 miles she gently pushes her dead calf in front of her. The scene is immensely heartbreaking. The discussion circled around the role of the activist, how to balance the scale of hope and despair and what we can do to change and how to get involved in the Coextinction project.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
